Waurika and Ryan Thinclads Have Good Day at Waurika Meet

The weather for last Saturday’s Red River Invitational Track Meet hosted by Waurika was some of the best of the season and the results for both Ryan and Waurika reflected the better conditions.

Waurika girls finished second in the meet with 100 points behind Atoka’s 122 points.

Ryan’s girls finished fourth with 68 points well behind third-place Frederick that finished with 96 points.

Walters took the team title in the boys’ division with a dominating performance. The Blue Devils racked up 187 points outdistancing Riverside Indian School that finished with 148 points.

Waurika finished third in the team standings with 91 points and Ryan finished eighth in the 14-team meet with 33 points.

One of the highlights of the meet came in the 3,200 meter relay where Ryan and Waurika continued to battle for supremacy in the event as they have throughout this season.

This time, it was the Ryan Cowgirl squad of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter that took first-place honors with a time of 10:52.01. The time is a new school record for Ryan in the event.

Waurika managed second place in the event with a time of 10:58.70. Asia Smith, Lexie Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora ran for the Lady Eagles in the event. It was easily the best time of the season turned in by this squad.

Waurika had three other relay teams to place in the meet – the primary factor for the Lady Eagles to earn runner up team honors.

The 800 meter relay team of Kaci Reynolds, Savana Ritter, Hope Cummings and Sara Ballard finished sixth with a time of 2:09.57.

That time was two seconds behind Ryan’s team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter who turned in a time of 2:07.28 to take fifth place.

The 400 meter relay team of Dallas Fristoe, Ritter, Reynolds and Ballard ran fifth for the Lady Eagles and turned in a time of 59.54.

In the 1,600 meter relay the Cowgirls and Lady Eagles battled again, but this time Frederick posted the winning time with the Cowgirl team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter finishing second with a time of 4:53.03 which is a new school mark.

The Lady Eagles finished fifth with the team of Smith, Streeter, F. Roberson and Mora posting a time of 5:10.28.

In the individual events, Madison Roberson had an outstanding day for the Lady Eagles as she earned two gold medals in the shot put and discus. Her shot put mark was 37-2, while the toss of the discus was 106-5.

Mora also won a gold medal for the Lady Eagles in the long jump with a leap of 16-2. Ballard earned a bronze medal with a jump of 15-0.

The other gold medal winner for the Lady Eagles was Smith in the 1,600 meters. She posted a time of 6:22.02 and Streeter was not far behind earning third place with a time of 6:28.37.

In the 800 meters, Smith finished fifth with a time of 2:46.71. Mora was sixth with a mark of 2:49.36 and F. Roberson finished eighth with a time of 3:11.99.

Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles as she finished seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 13.86.

The Cowgirls did not have any titlist in the individual events, but Spangler did earn a silver medal in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:14.33.

Harmon and Carter both placed for the Cowgirls in the 800 meters. Harmon was third with a timeof 2:44.04 and Carter was just behind in fourth place with a time of 2:44.87.

Spangler finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:39.24.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls was Katlyn Dabbs in the 300 meter hurdles with an eighth place finish. She recorded a time of 62.69. She is the first Cowgirl to score points in this event since the 1997 Southern Eight Conference track event.

The Eagles had another impressive day in the relay races. Waurika placed in every relay and won the 1,600 meter relay.

The team of Kevin Garcia, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano turned in a time of 3:42.98 to earn the gold medal just four-hundredths of a second behind the best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Arellano, Bryant, Garcia and Bryson Hernandez finished second with a time of 9:18.58. It was Waurika’s best time in the event this season.

The 400 meter relay team of Garcia, Tu. Mora, Nic Alvarado and Bryant was third with a time of 59.54.

The same quartet also took third in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:36.81. This was the best time of the season for the Eagles in this event.

Tu. Mora also won a gold medal in the 400 meters with his time of 53.62. He was the only gold medal winner for the Eagles on the day.

In the discus, Aaron Nitka finished fourth with a toss of 113-10, while Alvarado managed to finished fifth in the 100 meters with 11.5. Hernandez rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a seventh place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:32.44.

The Cowboys did not have any teams entered in the relays during the meet, but did have several outstanding marks in some of the individual events.

Walker Rawlings topped the performers for the Cowboys in the meet with two gold medals. He was first in the shot put with a toss of 41-10 and also first in the discus with a throw of 125-10.

Travis Fristoe had some impressive performances for the Cowboys. His mark of 19-3 in the long jump earned him fifth place and is the best mark in that event by a Ryan athlete since the 1985 Healdton invitational when Justin Savage posted a 20-6 jump.

Fristoe was also fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.25.

The Cowboy senior was also fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.86, while Landen Alexander also scored in the event for the Cowboys by finishing eighth with a time of 66.92.

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You,” – Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Children enjoy celebrating Dr. Seuss

March 2nd was Dr. Seuss’ Birthday.  Born in 1904, he would have been 114 this year.  Last Thursday, March 1st, the Library welcomed Terral Public Schools grades K-4 to celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday.  I read ‘Ten Apples Up on Top’ before the kids participated in games and activities.  The following day, Friday, March 2nd, the Waurika and Temple Head Starts visited.  Thanks to the Waurika FCCLA for helping on Thursday and to Vickie Etheridge and Starr Heron for helping on Friday.  Thanks to all of the teachers, parents, and children that attended.

The Story Of The Boot was a display of family stories in Jefferson County created to compliment the Smithsonian Institute exhibition at the Rock Island Depot this summer.

These stories have been compiled into a hardback book.  Copies of ‘The Story of the Boot’ are $25 and take 2-3 weeks for delivery to the library.  If you would like the copy mailed to a location other than the library, please add an additional $5 for shipping and allow for an additional week for mailing.

‘Your Hometown’ is a DVD compilation of videos from the local community.  The DVD includes the opening of Veteran’s Park, Brickstreet Classic Car Show, Interviews with residents of Jefferson Co. and more!  Copies of the DVD are available at the library for $10 with proceeds going to the Friends of the Waurika Public Library.

Story Time has a new day!  Story Time is now on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.  Each week, we read stories to pre-k children.  After Story Time, we have games, puzzles, and children’s computer games available.  If you would like to see Story Time on a different day and time, just let us know.

Many events and programs at the library are supported and funded by the Friends of the Waurika Public Library.  The Friends have started their sponsorship drive for 2018.  Sponsorship of the Friends starts at just $10.  For more information, to become a sponsor, or volunteer, please visit the Waurika Public Library.

It was another great county fair that is now in the record books.

For a complete list of the winners who participated please see page 2.

Besides the kids who participated in this year’s livestock show, there were many who submitted baked goods, arts, crafts, quilts, and much much more.

The fair building was filled with exhibits, perhaps the most seen in years.

With the addition of the Ice Cream Freeze Off and you have a fair that everyone will remember.

The Pet Show was a nice addition as well.

It’s time to gear up for next year’s fair!

Three Crosses

0

In recognition of Easter, we are running this photo early. It is designed by Sherrie and Mark Childers.

These three wooden crosses tell the story of the crucifixion and is located in Addington right next to the war memorial.

Special thanks to Pat Webb for bringing this to our attention.

Deborah Wedel of Tuttle was crowned Ms. Senior Oklahoma in Ada, OK, on Saturday, June 29th and will represent Oklahoma in the Ms. Senior America in Atlantic City, NJ, in October. The Ms. Senior America highlights the beauty of senior citizens through interviews, personal philosophies of life, talent and evening gown competitions. First runner-up was Susan Frazier of Skiatook. Second runner-up was Karen Tims of Oklahoma City. Third runner-up was Kathryn Gordon of Newalla.

Deborah, daughter of Orbie and the late James Smith of Claypool Community, attended Waurika High School. She has been married to Bruce Wedel for 46 years and they have two children, Derek & Heather Wedel, daughter -in-law Cindy, and two granchildren, Jakob and Nicole Wedel. Mary, and loved every minute of that time. Along the way, she also has honored in Washing D.C., as one of the Top Ten Outstanding  young Women of America in 1983, Good Housekeeping’s 100 Young Women of Promise of Promise in 1985, and third runner-up in the Mrs. Oklahoma Pageant in 1994.

The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the world’s first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the Age of Elegance. It is a search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans. It is upon their knowledge, experience and resource that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better society.

Waurika City Commissioner’s July Meeting

The July 8th regular meeting of the Waurika City Commissioners was lightly attended.

One of the first things decided on was the use of the future REAP Grant funds to be used to chip and seal the road that circles the Elementary School.

According to those present, it has been awhile since the road was resurfaced.

Next, the commissioners adopted their Five Year Plan. The plan is required in order to apply for a REAP Grant.

The interlocal agreement with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department for Dispatch Services in the amount of $3,027.20 per month was approved. This agreement must be approved annually.

The contract with A&A Wind Pro to lease property with Waurika was approved.

Bids were opened for the 1983 Chevy Truck belonging to the Waurika Fire Department, which had been declared as surplus. The highest bid of $1,100.00 was accepted.

Bids were opened for a surplus declared 2008 John Deer Mower. The bid for $300.00 was accepted.

Bids for the unused rolls of insulation that had previously been declared as surplus by the City of Waurika were opened. The highest bid was in the amount of $750.00. It was accepted.

The commissioners approved a new digital camera system for the new police patrol vehicle in the amount of $3,280.00.

Claims in the amount of $32,701.79 for the City of Waurika were approved.

It was reported that 25 loads of leftover millings from the road work on Hwy 70 east of Waurika was donated to the City of Waurika.

Acting City Manager reported that work continues on the Presbyterian Church.

Code enforcement continues, according to  City Clerk, Michael Bryant. Currently there are 19 properties in the process of being cleaned up. There are 25 more that will be brought into the process in the near future.

It is a slow tedious process but it will pay off in the future says Bryant.

The City of Waurika now hired a new police officer. His name is Matt Peck. There will be an article in an upcoming issue about him and his experience.

One of the main concerns the police department faces is the break ins and thefts that have been occurring on the north side of town.

In other business, Commissioner Henry Lara suggested that the police officers write down the street lights they  notice out at night so PSO can be contacted about repairing them the next day.

The Go Bonds, funds which have already been approved, the revenue of which comes in from the bond, in the amount of $40,255.31 were approved.

The financial report by RS Meacham was accepted and approved.

Overall it has been a good year for the city financially. One of the reasons is the revenue generated by the pipeline company temporarily operating in Waurika.

Commissioner Bill Everett complimented acting manager Brad Scott for his management. He said he could remember the shape the city was in before Brad took back over.

There being no new business, the Waurika City Commissioner  meeting was adjourned.

After a short break, the commissioners reconvened to conduct the business of the Waurika Public Works Authority (WPWA).

The minutes from the previous meetings were approved.

Bids on the John Deer D140 Mower were opened. The Mower only has 60 hours on it.  No bids were accepted.

The city purchased a new $800.00 air compressor for the water department.

Claims in the amount of $55,353.85 for the WPWA were approved.

Next, the finincial report from RS Meacham was approved.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned.

‘Round Ryan News

0

What wonderful weather we are experiencing around Ryan the past 2 days.  We’ve had temperatures just above 90 Monday and not expecting to hit 100 this week.  The past week was miserable with temperatures climbing up to 114 and lows around 80.  It’s a blessing to get outside in the morning and feel a cool breeze around you and then to go home in the evening on my bicycle and still hardly break a sweat before I get home, even after riding out to the cemetery before going home.  Summers can be hard to tolerate some of the time.

This Saturday morning is the day of the Ryan food bank.

This Saturday evening, Billy Roberson and his band will be playing at the old Methodist Church in Byers.  The admission fee is $10.00 if folks might be interested in going out for a good night of country & western entertainment.  I am not certain as to what time the music starts, but I will find out before Saturday if folks want to call the drug store for further information on this event.  Bill is a great musician and singer if you’ve never had an opportunity to hear him sing or play.

Sunday, at the Ryan Senior Citizen Center, there will be a benefit dinner for Pat Bussey, starting at 11:00am.  Pat is undergoing cancer treatment in Tulsa, and has to make numerous trips to undergo these treatments.  Please get out and give to this event that can help Pat and her family have less of a financial burden.

Sunday afternoon, the wedding shower for Macie Jo Wright is from 2:00-4:00 at the Ryan Church of Christ.  We still have a hostess box for them if folks call before too late this Friday afternoon.

This next week, on Friday, August 3rd, Ryan will be having our sidewalk sales again.  I’ll be praying for cooler weather for this day.  Maybe before then, we will have had some nice rains, too.

Kim’s news for this week:

Sunday, Ruffy Tuffy got a day off, because it was just too hot.

But, the rest of the week, early morning riding we seek.

Foxy likes early better, especially in this hot weather.

Everyone have a blessed week.  Pray for rain and for each other.
