The Waurika Sorosis Club has sponsored a Tea for graduating seniors for more than 25 years. This year club members had to be creative in honoring the Class of 2020 Graduates. On May, 6, club members delivered each WHS graduating senior yard signs with 2020 Grad, the student’s favorite pizza, a rose, a gift from the club and balloons. Club members drove separate cars and were careful to socially distance as the deliveries were made.
Jefferson County Livestock Exhibitors Host Pancake Dinner at Jefferson County Fairgrounds
The Jefferson County Fairground was packed Thursday, Feb. 15th with people from all around the county to enjoy a great pancake dinner. This dinner, consisting of pancakes, sausage, and bacon, was a fundraiser for the Jeff Co. livestock exhibitors. All the proceeds will be used to supply the meal for the Waurika and Ryan Premium Banquet.
The Waurika FFA would like to thank the members that attended and helped as well as the Waurika 4H and Ryan FFA and 4H members that got involved. There were also countless volunteers that helped prepare and serve the meal. The fundraiser would not have been what it was without these people helping.
The Waurika Local show will kick off this Thursday at the Jeff Co. Fairgrounds at 1:00 p.m. with the “teacher showmanship” competition. We hope to see you there in support of our local livestock exhibitors!

Waurika FCCLA Members Attend LEAD Conference
On September 12, seven officers from Waurika FCCLA attended the LEAD Conference at the Great Plains Technology Center in Lawton. The state conference provides leadership training for chapter officers. In the morning session, students heard keynote speaker, Rameil Sampson, who informed them how they could be a H.E.R.O. to their chapters by being honest, energizing, reliable and optimistic.
He motivated the group to identify obstacles to reaching their goals and figure out a way to overcome them. The afternoon sessions were hosted by Oklahoma Challenge, a teen traffic safety program, where materials were provided for students to take home and share with their schools. Students enjoyed a traffic trivia game show format that concluded the conference. Waurika FCCLA Adviser, Mrs. Bruner, said the conference is a great experience for officers because they come back super motivated to start planning activities for the school year.
Waurika Cleanup Day is a Huge Success!
To say that the first Cleanup day in Waurika was a huge success would be an understatement.
Several volunteers arrived bringing lawnmowers, farm equipment, rakes, shovels, and leaf blowers.
By the end of the day this past Saturday, downtown Waurika, Sorosis Park, and Centennial Park, along with other areas were very much improved.
Craig Williams even sent some of his employees down to help in the process.
Thanks to everyone who helped in any way.
Maris Blanchard: Restoring Historical Mural
The next time you are driving into Ryan, Oklahoma, take a look to the right before you come to downtown. The 22-year old Chisholm Trail scenery that has always been an eye-catching welcome suddenly appears a little different. Its subtle change might have you turn around and crawl back by. The Chisholm Trail mural!! Something’s different. The sage-covered hillside scenery has a focused depth to it. And the cattle, the cowboys and horse-drawn wagon come alive on the forefront of the dimensional landscape. To passersby, it’s beautiful and a nice addition to the town. To the people of Ryan, it means so much more.
What started out as a pipe dream for the Ryan Regeneration Group became reality during the month of July. The talk began in early 2018 to develop a plan to refurbish the 40-foot long mural depicting a scene from the glory days of the historic Chisholm Trail. A path laid by drovers, cowboys and the cattle they ran from deep in Texas through Ryan and into Kansas throughout the last half of the 19th century. The mural is the work of M.H. Henry, an artist, a passionate advocate of preserving the Trail’s history and a resident of Bowie, Texas. With the structural assistance of Hershel Shofner, the sign was erected in 1997. This mural stamped Ryan’s presence in southern Oklahoma and was a proud addition for the citizens of the town. The timing was perfect, with hundreds of former students pouring into town for the Ryan High School reunion in September. Everyone was in awe of the work and happy to know that our history would now be shared with everyone that passed through the town.
Over the next two decades, the mural stood strong, but began to take on the effects of the intense weather of southern Oklahoma. With the birth of the Regeneration group, thoughts began to come into words about assisting with its refurbishment and longevity. The suggestion came up to find an artist to bring the mural back to life. But not only that, find someone that shares the passion of beautifying the town. Maris Blanchard, granddaughter to Theresa Blanchard, was approached by the group to see if she would consider taking on this timely task. As recalled, the group did not even have to fully ask her help, as Maris excitedly interrupted and said, “I would LOVE to help you with the mural.” It was a joyous occasion not only for the Regeneration group, but just as much for Maris. Her father, Bobby Blanchard, was a 1975 graduate of Ryan. Back in her childhood, Maris came back to Ryan frequently with her Dad. She and her Dad shared the love of going out on land northeast of Ryan to hunt for cow skulls or any skulls she could find. Along with spiders, bugs and critters that she could talk her Dad into taking home. Maris found this would be one of her many outdoor passions that still carries on to today. Bobby passed away in 2007 and with this, Maris’ memories of Ryan started to fade over the years.
At the beginning of the project, Maris began the preparation and studied the work of Mr. Henry so that her efforts would accent his vision. All the way down to the brands on the cattle that depicted the symbol of ranches in the local area. Maris unexpectedly and pleasantly found help as the citizens of Ryan became her eyes, ears and cold-water providers during the intensely hot days of late July. Work on the project started early in the morning and went on till sundown. What could have been an arduous task became a celebration as she moved slowly and carefully through bringing the wonderful scene back to life. The town was vibrant with talk at Stick’s and the Parlor about the young lady working on our mural. It did not take anyone long to find out that Maris invited everyone in to the scene going on at the junction of Highways 32 and 81. Among the topics of interest were Maris’ other hobbies and line of work such as taxidermy and making organic home décor themed around animal cadavers and skeletal remains. Many were intrigued and Maris was endless with conversation as she learned hunting in this part of Oklahoma is right up there with football as a favorite sport.
Now with the task complete and the mural looking like new again, the Ryan Regeneration group share the joy of their pipe dream becoming a reality. And as the folks of Ryan cherish anew this testament to our heritage, the warmth and joy of knowing that the spirit of the town stretches far past the limits of the ranches and fields surrounding the city.
A very special thanks go to so many of the hard-working, fun loving members of the Ryan Generation group. A special thanks to Sherry and Eddie Pewitt, Heather and Crosby Casebolt, Dennis Underwood and many others for showing up and sharing time with Maris. A very, very special Thank You goes out to Walker and Linda Ryan. Not only for providing the scaffolding, which without it, the project could not at all have been completed. But for your warm-hearted, incredible hospitality each day this project was going on. Maris said that she has found her second home in Ryan and a new extended family that would make her Dad proud.
Questions Answered About Bond Election at Thursday Meeting
Several Citizens attended the meeting at the Waurika Depot Thursday evening to find out more information about Tuesday’s Bond Election.
The Bond Election will decide if citizen’s of Waurika want to pass the bond that will allow the Waurika Fire Department to purchase much needed fire equipment and vehicles.
Some of the items to be purchased will include a ladder truck, six storm shelters, battery backup sirens, a rescue truck, jaws of life.
There are several reasons for needing a ladder truck. One is the courthouse. If there was a fire in the courthouse we currently do not have a truck with a ladder that could reach the third floor. Also, there is about to be a major expansion at the Jefferson County Hospital that a ladder truck would be needed to fight any fire that may occur at that facility. The other reason is the safety of the volunteer fire fighters. Currently, they have to sometimes be on the roofs of houses that are on fire. The ladder truck would enable them to fight the fire without having to stand on the burning building’s roof.
The addition of the new storm shelters would be very beneficial. Currently, students at the high school can not use the locker rooms as a storm shelter because of the gas lines.
The new sirens will have a battery backup that will be essential if the power goes out during a storm or tornado.
Another benefit to the new trucks would be the possibility of lowing the cities insurance rating. If that happens, property insurance would go down. Waurika is currently at a class 5 and could possibly drop to a 4 or 3. The lower the rating, the lower the cost of property insurance.
Rick Smith, owner of Municipal Finance Services, was on hand to talk about the bond and how it will affect citizen’s property taxes.
He has worked with the City of Waurika for over 20 years. He helped facilitate the Bond approved in 2004 in the amount of $320,000.00. That bond is about to expire so the new bond will just replace the 2004 one. In other words the bond will not be an additional tax as much as it will be replacing the expiring one.
Smith said during his presentation that another bond was the best route for Waurika.
If the bond passes, tax payers shouldn’t see much difference in their property taxes.
Smith says that even though the new bond is for more money, $450,000.00, it should be approved at a lower interest rate.
What will it cost tax payers?
The example he gave was that if you owned a $60,000.00 home, it should only cost the tax payer around $35.00 – $45.00 per year. It may be higher in the first few years, but as the property values increase the tax actually goes down.
The new taxes wouldn’t be due until 2019.
Like the 2004 bond, this bond would also be on a 15 year plan.
The bonds will be bid on by various banks including those in Waurika. If one of the local banks win the bid, it would be beneficial to the community.
Nobody likes to think about fires, especially property and structure fires. However, if and when they happen it helps to be more than prepared and have the essential equipment needed to but the fires out quickly and safely.
2018 Free Fair Results
It was another great county fair that is now in the record books.
For a complete list of the winners who participated please see page 2.
Besides the kids who participated in this year’s livestock show, there were many who submitted baked goods, arts, crafts, quilts, and much much more.
The fair building was filled with exhibits, perhaps the most seen in years.
With the addition of the Ice Cream Freeze Off and you have a fair that everyone will remember.
The Pet Show was a nice addition as well.
It’s time to gear up for next year’s fair!
