It’s been another awesome week and we did receive a bit of rain on Wednesday and nearly again on Thursday. Our temperatures are nearly where they should be at this time of year, but, as we Okies know, that can change at any minute. We have still seen some lows nearing the very low 40s, but, those might be behind us now. We have some pretty good chances for rain this week before the paper goes to print.

I was sorry to hear about the passings  of Billie Johnson and her brother, Weldon Fuller. Prayers to their families during this time of loss.

I picked up Brionna Thursday and she got to spend some time Friday morning with her friends Kim, Foxy, and Ruffy Tuffy. Brionna got to spend a few minutes in the store Friday, but, the rest of the day she spent it visiting at the bank, or with Crystal and Tammy, or with Morgan. She got her hair cut Friday morning by Morgan. She did a good job. Saturday we went to Wichita Falls and ate out, did some shopping, went to see the movie A Wrinkle in Time, then headed to Nocona to spend some time with Mom. Sunday morning we got ready for church and stopped and picked up Ben Arneson so he could go to Sunday school and church with us. I made a loaf of bread for Communion, and the remainder of the dough, I made cinnamon rolls. It was Ben, Brionna, and myself attending class. Edna called that she wasn’t going to make it because she had to go help Natalie and Ken with some cattle. Butch had told me earlier in the week that he wasn’t going to be in town for the weekend. He and Lily went to Oklahoma City to see family members up around the City. Dana wasn’t at church or Sunday school because she had made a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Lolly came in around 10:30 and told me that she had gotten a phone call that Brother Bob Waitman had passed away that morning.  I was so sorry to hear that news, but, it sounded like he passed peacefully from this life.  He has been a very well respected and loved man in and around and beyond our community.  Prayers to all of the Waitman family during this difficult time. The Crossbrand Cowboy Church had their church service as planned, but, they had a pastor that filled in for Brother Bob on this particular Sunday.

Brionna and I attended the wedding shower for Morgan Good and her fiancé, Jim Roberts. They received a lot of nice gifts and there was a good crowd there that attended their celebration.

Sunday evening, Brionna and I attended church in Terral at the Assembly of God Church.  The First Baptist Church of Terral and Terral Assembly of God Church met together for food and fellowship. They meet together when there is a 5th Sunday.  I had been asked to attend this service, first by Cecilia Harnois, and next by Keith, the Terral Assembly of God Pastor. There was a lot of good food, then we met in the sanctuary for fellowship. There was a lot of really good music. Terral has a lot of really talented folks that are willing to get up there and share their talents with a pretty large group of folks. Geneva played the piano for the congregational singing. It was very enjoyable and we can look forward to the next 5th Sunday get-together in August, where the meeting place will be at the Terrap First Baptist Church.  I took Brionna back to Bowie after the service.

Kim’s news for this week:

When I rode Sunday, it was time for fly spray. Ruffy Tuffy wouldn’t mind, he was shaking his head all the time. So, today, I did spray. It was beautiful weather, Ruffy Tuffy did better.

Everyone have a blessed week. Pray for rain and for each other.

Well, we have had a blessed week, weather wise this past week.  We have again seen extreme temperatures from the 90s one day to the 50s the next.  Winds that would nearly blow you away. We nearly had some rain Friday morning.  I woke up and it was lightning, but, when I turned the light on outside, the concrete was dry.  Maybe this week we will have better chances of precipitation coming possibly Friday and Saturday.  I am hoping that we won’t see anymore freezing temperatures until next fall.  I got out yesterday and mowed my weeds.  I didn’t see any grass among what I was mowing.  The plant with the little purple flowers was abundant, but, it looked like it was turning brown.

I went to Amarillo Saturday morning and the winds were blowing at more than 30 mph.  I made it over to see Randy and made it back home again safely Saturday evening.

There are 2 wedding showers scheduled this month.  Morgan Good’s shower is Sunday, April 29, from 2-4 pm at the Ryan Church of Christ.  They are registered at Dillard’s, Target, and Walmart.  Also, on April 22, at 2:00 pm at the Ryan First Baptist Church, Larimey Curtis and his fiancee. There is a hostess box for each of the 2 couples at the Ryan Drug Store if folks would like to just put in some money for either of the couples.

The Ryan food bank will be distributing food on April 28th.

We received news from our Methodist District Superintendent last week, that our pastor, Sandy Shepherd is going to be assigned  up around the Tulsa area to two new churches for her.  She expressed a need to be relocated if possible, to be closer to her mother, that has had some concerning health issues.  We are sad to lose her, but we are certainly glad that she will be in a location that will get her closer to her mom.  Mark, her husband, has been quite an asset in our church, too.  He has sung some solos on several occasions, and is certainly blessed with a beautiful voice.  Our church doesn’t know at this time what pastor will be assigned to our church.  We will be in prayer for  receiving our pastor, whomever they assign us.

Kim’s news for this week:

Foxy is a cowdog chick.  Riding Ruffy Tuffy is her best trick.

Cowboys don’t cry, Ride Foxy ride.

Her favorite pastime of all is playing with her silly-ball.  She can raise her paw and praise God!

Everyone have a blessed week. Please pray for rain and for each other.

What wonderful weather we are experiencing around Ryan the past 2 days.  We’ve had temperatures just above 90 Monday and not expecting to hit 100 this week.  The past week was miserable with temperatures climbing up to 114 and lows around 80.  It’s a blessing to get outside in the morning and feel a cool breeze around you and then to go home in the evening on my bicycle and still hardly break a sweat before I get home, even after riding out to the cemetery before going home.  Summers can be hard to tolerate some of the time.

This Saturday morning is the day of the Ryan food bank.

This Saturday evening, Billy Roberson and his band will be playing at the old Methodist Church in Byers.  The admission fee is $10.00 if folks might be interested in going out for a good night of country & western entertainment.  I am not certain as to what time the music starts, but I will find out before Saturday if folks want to call the drug store for further information on this event.  Bill is a great musician and singer if you’ve never had an opportunity to hear him sing or play.

Sunday, at the Ryan Senior Citizen Center, there will be a benefit dinner for Pat Bussey, starting at 11:00am.  Pat is undergoing cancer treatment in Tulsa, and has to make numerous trips to undergo these treatments.  Please get out and give to this event that can help Pat and her family have less of a financial burden.

Sunday afternoon, the wedding shower for Macie Jo Wright is from 2:00-4:00 at the Ryan Church of Christ.  We still have a hostess box for them if folks call before too late this Friday afternoon.

This next week, on Friday, August 3rd, Ryan will be having our sidewalk sales again.  I’ll be praying for cooler weather for this day.  Maybe before then, we will have had some nice rains, too.

Kim’s news for this week:

Sunday, Ruffy Tuffy got a day off, because it was just too hot.

But, the rest of the week, early morning riding we seek.

Foxy likes early better, especially in this hot weather.

Everyone have a blessed week.  Pray for rain and for each other.

It’s been a very hot and dry week around our little town. We are getting ready to have our temperatures climb up above 100 this week.  We are in great need of rain. Maryland is flooding and Florida is about to have a visit from Hurricane Albert.  We have a lot to be thankful for even in the midst of the hot and dry weather.

I’ve had Brionna home with me since Thursday evening.  We went to Henrietta Saturday afternoon to see the wedding of Morgan and Jim Roberts. It was a very nice wedding. Brionna caught the bridal bouquet. Nolan Brown caught the groom’s garter. After all that excitement, we went to Nocona to see Mom for a little while.

Sunday afternoon, my in-laws came over from Denison. We went out to the cemetery and buried Reid’s urn from his cremation. There were a few folks out at the cemetery that were taking care of their loved ones grave sites. I took some flowers out to our grave site on Memorial Day. The cemetery really looks good. It is freshly mowed.

This Friday, we will be having our sidewalk sales, starting at 8:30. I am not sure what time Tina or Dennis will be starting their sales.

This next Tuesday our city council will meet at 6:00pm.

This past week, several folks from our local communities have passed away. Sandy Farris from Ryan, passed away this past week. Prayers to her family and friends during their loss. Cecilia Harnois’ husband, Robert, passed away the same day. Prayers to Cecilia and her family and friends during their loss, also.

Ryan is losing one of our families that has been part of our community for over 30 years. Larry Ninman and his family are in the process of selling their home and moving closer to Larry’s mom.  They still plan on making trips back to Ryan on occasions. Good luck to them during this transition.

Kim’s news for this week:

Thanks for all the knowledge from the Cowboy College. Lots of education like Dustan’s Indian fire starter demonstration.

Brionna was back in town, we love having her around.

Everyone have a blessed week. Pray for rain and for each other.

What a week we have had around Ryan in regards to our weather.  We’ve had some really beautiful weather. We’ve had some great days to get outside and work on the yard, or whatever pleasurable things are to get us outside because it was so pleasant.  Well, after Friday afternoon was upon us, all of that changed.  The winds turned around and began blowing from the north, and they were really hard winds.  The kind of winds that, if you were sitting in your home, you could hear the shingles flapping around just a few feet above your head.  If the wind wasn’t enough, then, on Saturday morning, it was 30 degrees until around noon.  There was a bit of precipitation that turned to ice for a little while.  Sunday it was a bit warmer.  It made it up to around 60 degrees.  That was our heat wave for the weekend.  Today, the sun has been shining and it is very pleasant again.  I got on Facebook after I had received a message from a friend and the season we are in is being referred to is now Sprinter.  We don’t know if it is spring or winter, so, this catches whatever the condition is at the time.  We are still going to receive some pretty cool temperatures this coming weekend.  Our mesquite trees are even bearing leaves now, so, they think it is Spring.

Our high school kids had their junior-senior prom this past weekend.  It was certainly cold that evening.

We have a few folks in our community that needed to be lifted up in our prayers.  Joe Turner is still in Duncan Regional and is having some more surgery.  Please keep him and Fern in your prayers.  David Wingfield had surgery last week and prayers for him and his family that he will be restored to good health soon. Please remember Carlie Southard in our prayers.  Pat Bussey made it back home last week and she is going to Tulsa to the Cancer Center to get their opinion on what approach she needs to take in regards to the cancer she has.  Prayers for her and her family during this time.

Terri and Chuck Sheffield will be making a trip to London, England this week.  Terri has been very successful in her insurance business and Farm Bureau is paying for their trip.  Prayers for them that they have safe travels there and back.  They will spend 9 hours on the plane before they get to their destination.

Kim’s news for this week:

Before I got to the big flashing sign by the bridge, I look over my shoulder cause it sounded like I was getting pulled over.

In Shelton’s parking lot I ran over my foot with a shopping cart..

Sunday afternoon, it was all I was hoping, me and Ruffy Tuffy turning back at the Cowboy Church roping.

Everyone have a blessed week.  Prayers for rain and for each other.

Saturday nights dance at the American Legion Post #183 was a success.  The music was provided by a five piece band consisting of the regulars.   Bill Roberson, Cary Gore and Gene Chesley as well as newcomers Joy and Don McCullough supplied a mix of old country, middle aged country and gospel.  The music lovers and dancers don’t equal the days of the Old Ryan Stomp but the numbers seem to be growing.  I enjoyed hearing “Go Rest High On that Mountain” and also their version of “Arkansas River” but hearing Joy McCullough sing some old gospel tunes really took me back.  If you have not been to one of these get togethers then you are missing out.  Besides the music you can visit with your neighbors or even meet some new folks if you are of a mind.

Don’t forget this coming Saturday the Ryan Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a 5K fun run/walk.  It will be starting at 8:00 am and they will be serving lunch after the event at the Fire Department.  Come out and support the fire fighters and all the participants.

One of the members of the Irving Baptist Church told me that this last Sunday they had their monthly meal at the church.  It consisted of fried chicken, various salads, watermelon and home made ice cream.  Telling me this on Monday seems a bit mean spirited, but I’m not one to hold a grudge, especially if you tell me in time for the next one.

Monte Wright is refurbishing the benches on Washington.  He has the new wood on the first bench and it is back in place.  It’s my understanding that the Ryan Beautification Group is providing the material and Monte is donating his time and labor.

The book related section of this article is not about one book alone but about reading in general. How did my fellow readers get started down the road to being bibliophiles?  I don’t really remember how it got started for me but there were always books in our home while I was growing up and I had access to the school library.  After my folks purchased a set of World Book Encyclopedias, I spent a lot of time reading those volumes that told of far away places or animals and customs that were foreign to me.  From there I graduated to books that at times were probably a bit mature for me, some of those I re-read later and then could grasp the nuances that had escaped my young self.  Some books and authors were introduced to me by teachers  and older siblings.  Mrs. Rickard lead me to Shakespeare and Chaucer.  My brother Phil gave me the gift of Hemingway.  My father fed my love of history, on his bookshelf were stories of the American Civil War by Bruce Catton.  On my own (if that is even possible) I discovered James Fenimore Cooper and Emerson.  Some of my most prized possessions are volumes of Thoreau and Walt Whitman given to me by my sister Merrianne.  Not everything that I read is a classic,  I enjoy a good adventure story as much as the next person.  Drop me a line and let me known how you got started.

Maybe next time I’ll discuss my musical influences and how my sister Lynn scarred me for life with some her musical tastes.

What a great week we’ve had. It was a hot week. No rain for the week, but, Sunday started out very cool, then Monday followed suit. We had a little shower today, and hoping and praying to be blessed with more.

Tuesday morning last week, we learned that someone had tried to break into the ATM machine inside the First State Bank. They have some video footage of the person trying to gain access into the machine and they are also aware of the vehicle he was driving, but, hopefully they will find the person involved in this crime.

Wednesday and Thursday were pretty quiet days around town, but, then Friday came along and we started our sidewalk sales around town.  It was great to see folks out in town shopping the local merchants. It was pretty exciting to see downtown Ryan was still alive and capable of bringing folks in to shop, even from areas outside of our local area. We had a few folks that traveled from Duncan. There were several garage sales around town, too. It was a great day. Maybe we should do this more often!

The time is approaching that we will be having the dinner to raise money for our Ryan Cemetery.  A lot of money is required to keep our cemetery maintained during the months that the lawn is mowed.  This fundraiser takes some of the financial burden off of our town’s expenses. The dinner is set for Father’s Day, June 17,  at the Ryan School Cafeteria.

Kim’s news for this week:

Dustin, I want to thank him for giving Ruffy Tuffy a trim. I was by Ruffy Tuffy’s side when Dustan saw Foxy ride. Dustan has his own chicken market. I’m saving him egg cartons.

Ronnie had fun hanging with his grandson.

Everyone have a blessed week. Pray for rain and for each other.

This past Saturday was a great day for hunting Easter eggs around Ryan. Walker and Linda Ryan had a hot dog feed along with an Easter egg hunt just after dark, out at their house, east of Ryan.  There was a good crowd there and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

Brionna and I went over to Wichita Falls Saturday and went to the Whispers of Hope Horse Farm and visited Mary Elizabeth, that runs it.  We went to see the movie “I Can Only Imagine”. That was a really good movie.

Easter Sunday wasn’t quite as warm as we had seen on Saturday, but, we maybe saw a bit of precipitation for the day in the form of mist.  This morning, it was down-right cold again.  It is supposed to be in the 60s Tuesday and freezing Wednesday morning for this first week in April.  It’s amazing what changes we can have with our weather.

I took Brionna over to visit her grandparents in Denison on Sunday afternoon.  We enjoyed lunch with them at the Cracker Barrel in Sherman.  Then we went over to their house to visit some more.  I stopped in for a visit with Mom that evening.  I played some hymns for them and they enjoyed singing with the familiar tunes.  We all had a good time.  Then I made it back to Ryan, safely before it was too late.  I watched Jesus Christ Superstar late Sunday evening.  I have heard mixed emotions about this production.  We got into a conversation about it during our Sunday school class and I just thought I would watch it for myself and form my own opinion.  I won’t publish my opinion about it.  The music was pretty good, though.

We had a good turnout for Brenda Johnson’s luncheon Friday afternoon. Three of her four kids were able to make it to have lunch with her.  There were some brother and sister-in-laws from Chickasha that came to celebrate with her.  She had all of her co-workers from the clinic with her, too.  There were friends and some of her patients from the clinic that came over to be with her, too.  I believe she enjoyed the lunch that we prepared for her.  We all had a good time eating and visiting together.  She actually got off work about an hour early Friday.  We will miss seeing Brenda in that clinic, but Cyndi Cosme has been working with Brenda and   Marc for a couple of weeks now.  Cyndi is the new LPN in our Ryan Family Medical Clinic.

A number of Oklahoma teachers are taking a stand up at the State Capitol, asking for higher wages.  I saw a news clip on Channel 3 at 6:00 last week, where they interviewed a couple of students, as well as Mr. Chapman. They were discussing this issue on the news.

Joe Turner is still in the hospital in Duncan,  Ramona Johnson had her surgery in Dallas, and is expected to be discharged today.

Kim’s news for this week:

Brionna lost her phone this week, but, Foxy had it in the back seat.

So, Gary Lee ran over his knee, working on his car alone. He almost hit his neighbor’s home.

Mollye, thanks a bunch for Brenda’s retirement lunch.

Dustan had a lot of snakes in a box.

Resurrection Day, I can’t complain, I had a wonderful lunch at Blaine’s.

Everyone have a blessed week. Pray for each other and for rain.

We have been blessed with nearly 3 inches of rain this past week. It was much needed, and is pretty well been absorbed into the soil now.  I am watching my lawn and hoping not to have to get on the mower again this year, but I am seeing some blades of grass stick up more than what I like, so, maybe next weekend will be the last.
Brionna and I attended the wedding ceremony of Denver Bob and Hailey Overstreet.  They had a good crowd out there at the Beaver Creek Barn near Walters.  Brother Bob Waitman officiated over the ceremony.  He had a lot of kind words, scriptures, and advice for the couple.
The Ryan junior high football team will be playing Thackerville on October 9, starting at 6:30pm here in Ryan.  The high school team will be playing Fox here with the game starting at 7:30pm this Friday night.
We will be closing the Ryan Drug Store at 11:00am this Thursday to attend the funeral service of Brionna’s uncle and my brother-in-law, Brad Compton, in Lewisville, TX. We will open Friday as usual.
This coming Monday, October 9, is Columbus Day and this is a holiday for the banks, post office, and Ryan City Hall.  They will all be closed Monday.
Kim’s news for this week:
Thanks to Pat and Doyle again for giving Ruffy Tuffy a trim.
This week was great, Foxy had her birthday, she turned 8.
And isn’t God grand for the rain on this land.
The Cowboy Church roping was awesome, I scared Doyle with Foxy’s toy possum.
When I got stuck, there was no doubt that the cowboys would get me out.
Everyone have a blessed week and prayers for rain have been helping, but continue to pray for each other here and everywhere.

What a beautiful morning it was to get up and feel the cool breeze instead of the heat for a change.  I know the forecasters say that we are going to be headed toward 100 on Wednesday, but, it certainly is nice for now, anyway. Sunday morning we had enough precipitation to get the pavement wet. That’s okay, it’s better than nothing.  Our lawns are finally green and it soon will be time to mow again.  I won’t make it 4 weeks between mowing this time.

There is a baby shower for Rachel (Pollan) and Brandon Sain at the Terral Community Center on August 26th at 3:00pm.  They are expecting a baby boy.  The couple is registered at Walmart and Amazon if people wish to go to the stores or online to purchase gifts. The Ryan Drug Store has a hostess box for them if anyone would like to put their name in as well.

I stand corrected on the Mayor of our town not rerunning for his seat in the next election.  Terry Grantham is seeking reelection and I do apologize for the miscommunication in last weeks paper.

Taylor Street is in quite a mess as the city workers are working to repair water lines behind the First Baptist Church.

Our local merchants are planning another sidewalk sale on Friday, September 7th.  I’m hopeful that our weather will be a bit cooler and more tolerable by that time.

As I got online this morning to start up my email to begin my article, I am quickly made aware that Google mail has now upgraded their site.  I am a creature of habit and I had to hunt for the compose prompt that was always down in the bottom right corner of the screen.  That is what life is all about–change.  Nothing ever remains constant.

Kim and her four legged children are well, but, she didn’t provide me with an article this week.

Everyone have a blessed week.  Pray for rain and each other.
