The council voted to apply for a grant that will enable the town of Ryan to purchase new electronic water meters that will be more accurate and tamper proof.

If the REAP grant is awarded to the town of Ryan, the new meters will allow city employees to accurately read the meters with electronic equipment. The meters can also notify city employees automatically if anyone tampers with them in anyway.

This will cut down on citizens turning the water meters on and off without notifying city hall. This has been an ongoing problem for some time.

In other business, Dennis Underwood addressed the council about the instillation of a Christmas Tree in the intersection of 5th and Washington during the Christmas Season.

Coach Stan Mueggenborg will be constructing the permanent tree stand that will be embedded in the center of the intersection. He assured the council members that it will be done professionally and will not detract from the aesthetics of the brick street.

The council agreed to let the project go forward.

Some at the meeting were wondering why city employees no longer decorated business downtown with Christmas lights. It was explained that this tradition was stopped because it is a liability to the Town of Ryan for its employees to be decorating private businesses.

Business owners are free to decorate their businesses for the Christmas Season if they so wish.

There was also a vote to allow other members of the city council to sign and receive REAP grant awards.

In other business, it was decided that a calender will be utilized to schedule use of city owned property such as the city park.

Anyone wanting to use the park in the future will need to stop by city hall and reserve the date. At this time there is no cost for using the park.

During the meeting all the bills and claims were paid.

The council also voted to raise the pay of Michelle Mellow $87.50 per pay period.

It was noted during the meeting that Michelle Mellow does not sign checks.

Dylan Sheffield addressed the council on behalf of the Regeneration and Community Beautification Group and informed them of a fundraiser scheduled for Sunday September 16th. The group is also scheduling a Fall Festival in October.

Once all business was dispensed with, the meeting was adjourned.

We were blessed with close to 6 inches of rain last Friday. It started Thursday evening around 6:30pm, when the winds and clouds came in. We lost our electricity until 2:31 Friday morning. It was off for nearly 8 hours. It was cooler to go outside than it was to stay in the house with no air circulating. Brionna was home with me and she wasn’t too fond of being without electricity. People used to do without electricity, but, modern amenities have come to spoil us. And, cooler days are right around the corner and summer is officially behind us.

This next Tuesday will be the evening of the Ryan City Council meeting at 6:00.

On Friday, October 5th we will be having another sidewalk sale for our Ryan merchants.

Megan and Joby Edwards were blessed with a baby boy, Joc, nearly 2 weeks ago. Congratulations to them on their new baby.

This Friday, there will be a meeting at the Mercantile to discuss Christmas decorations around town if anybody is interested in helping with that . The meeting will be held at 6:00pm.

I was riding my bicycle to make a delivery before I opened the store this morning and I noticed Debbie Patrick had moved her car a couple of times away from her usual parking place in front of the old post office building. She was parked across the street beside the Mercantile and was looking out her window across the street and I asked her what was going on. She said there was something in her parking spot and it wouldn’t move. I got a little closer and it was a really big turtle. It had taken up residence in her parking spot and was resting. She said she had tried to get it to move, but, it wouldn’t move. I got off my bicycle and got hold of a chair and tried to budge it to change its spot, but, it sure didn’t want to. It took a bite out of the end of the chair when I was trying to get it to move over to the grass. It finally was in the grass, turned over on his back, and so I told Debbie he must be tired out and so was I. I made my delivery and after I was riding back to the store and Debbie had moved to her parking place and she told me the turtle made it across the street and up the steps to the sidewalk in front of Jimmy Ferris’s place. I rode over to the side of the building and caught a picture of him as he was traveling. I guess he made it up the hill from the creek. (see picture below)

Saturday, Ruffy Tuffy was very happy, he got a day off cause I went to a Woman’s Church Conference in Comanche.

This past week we can’t complain, but, Praise God for the rain.

Celebrate Christmas on the Trail in Ryan

Make plans now to be a part of Christmas on the Trail in Ryan on December 1st.

There will be multiple FREE drawings throughout the day. However, you must be present to win.

School kids will bring their decorated ornaments to place on the Downtown Christmas Tree between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

There will be pony rides, wagon rides, hot chocolate, face painting, vendors, a cake walk.

As a special bonus, the 2 Cajons food truck will be there as well.

We will see you there!

New Pastor Arrives in Ryan

Pictured left is Alex and Naomi Alejandro along with their three kids: AJ (7th grade), Ava (4th grade), and Axel (2nd grade).

Alex and his wife Naomi worked in education in Wichita Falls before moving to Ryan.

Alex worked at Zundy Elementary as a bilingual teacher, and Naomi worked at Milam Elementary as the campus principal.

Although the Alejandros loved their jobs and the community they served, they answered the call to full-time ministry this past summer.

Since moving to Ryan they have been overwhelmed with the welcomes and well wishes they have received from the community.

They are now the new Pastors of the First Assembly of God Church in Ryan.

Services at the Ryan Assembly begin each Sunday at 10:30 am and 5:00 pm. Soon, they plan to hold Sunday School classes each Sunday morning at 9:30 am.

The Alejandros wish to thank everyone for their kindness in welcoming them to Ryan. They look forward to meeting more people and becoming more acquainted with the community.

Members of the church have expressed their excitement for the arrival of the Alejandros into their church family.

A new week is upon us, and I am prayerful that a good rain is behind us before this paper is released. Sunday morning, we had a very thick fog, which provided a drop to our much needed moisture situation. Our trees are looking like spring is fast approaching. I just hope that our fruit trees won’t start blooming too soon.

We are still seeing some cases of flu around our community. There have been some that have been hospitalized from it. Some have had a case of pneumonia along with the flu. Prayers to all of our folks that we can stay healthy and well.

The national news for this morning and also yesterday, was the stock market plunging downward. It fell worse on Monday this week, after a pretty bad fall on Friday. Gasoline prices around town are up to nearly $2.49 per gallon. We get spoiled to lower prices at the pump. Things will get better though.

Last week we received an order from our wholesaler that contained a bottle of Citroma. This is a liquid laxative preparation that is packaged in a glass container. It is always wrapped in plastic bubbles, to keep the container from being broken during transit. When we received it, the lid wasn’t on the bottle very tight, and some of the bottle had leaked into the bubble wrap. Lanette called the wholesaler to report the product so we could obtain credit, and the person on the other end of the phone told her they would issue a return invoice for the product. We return products quite often, but, in cases like this, they don’t usually ask for the product back. We received the papers to return the product yesterday morning and they had written the reason for the return was “seal was broken item is lickin”. Maybe that was why they wanted the product back. This would be an amazement to me, too.

I didn’t even get a glimpse of the Super Bowl Game. I usually will watch it to see the commercials. They are usually more interesting than just what we see every day.

Brionna and I went to watch the Ryan Cowboys and Cowgirls basketball games last Tuesday evening. Our girls and boys put forth a lot of effort, but, they didn’t get ahead of their opponents. They still played well and did their best.

There have been a good number of local folks that have been hired to work at the new casino in Terral. That is great news. They are still in the hiring phase, so, if anyone is looking for a job, this might be a good place to start applying.

I don’t want to forget to thank Doyle for Ruffy Tuffy’s ride to the vet. Ruffy Tuffy wasn’t very nice, he had to be sedated twice.

So that Rex could hear, Ronnye brought him a funnel for his ear.

We’ve had some beautiful days in the last week. We still are getting to experience the presence of winter amidst each week that passes. Looking at our forecast for this week, there are great chances for rain every day through Saturday. We are heading for some more cold days, but, we have days that are quite warm amongst them. Our temperature this morning was 70 degrees and we are expecting to have temperatures in the 40s before the day is over. We so desperately need the rain. I hear farmers talking about their wheat crops and they are having to send their cattle to sell them about a month early than usual. The crop wouldn’t thrive without the presence of moisture. Things might beginning to look better in our present drought situation.

This morning’s news on Channel 7 KSWO out of Lawton had 2 things of interest. The first being that Ryan was mentioned regarding our Senior Citizen meal site is possibly facing closure. There is a meeting being held at the meal site at 11:00 this morning to discuss this. This would be a great loss for our community as well as surrounding communities that take advantage of at least one good meal per day in our 5 day work week. Not only does this site offer meals, but, they offer fun and games to all who want to go to participate. This might be the only time some of our folks are able to get out and socialize with others. I hope and pray that the outcome of their meeting today will show favor to our meal site and allow this facility to keep serving our community. This site employs several individuals, too. They are in need of maintaining 25 citizens daily and they have had 24 regularly. Just 1 more person to allow them to remain open. Please show your support if you are over 60, and get out and eat and see what a good time they have down there. The meals are around $2.00 per person. The last time I went out to eat, the drinks alone were more than $2.00.

Editor’s Note: Mollye heard that the Ryan Senior site will stay open of they can keep between 20-25 regular attendees. If you get a chance you might want to stop by and support the Senior Center in Ryan.

The second thing I heard mention was concerning our daylight savings time. Our Oklahoma Legislature is trying to pass a bill that would have Oklahomans in a permanent daylight savings time status. As it is, we are in Central Standard Time 7 months of the year. They just keep expanding the daylight savings time on us at the national level. You might as well say, that would include us in the same time zone as Georgia and Florida. I will reserve my opinion on this one.

The Terral River Star Casino is still planning to open on March 1. It doesn’t look like the Ryan casino will be opening on the 28th of February. There is only 1 double wide mobile home out there at their casino site. I only hear things through the grapevine from out there.

This Saturday the Ryan Food Bank will be distributing at 10:00am.

Our trash service will be running on Saturday instead of Friday this week, due to the holiday we had Monday.

We were sorry to hear of the passing of Carrie Sheffield, from Terral. Carrie taught a lot of folks from Ryan and Terral. Prayers to her family and friends during their loss.

Kim is finally feeling much better. She has been down for 2 weeks, and has finally gotten back to work and to writing. Kim’s news for this week:

For 2 weeks I’ve been under the weather. Now I am healed and feeling better.

Foxy and I will begin to ride Ruffy Tuffy again.

Ryan Council Meeting – Shortest of the Year!

It was the shortest meeting of the year thus far.

There were three members of the council present – Tammy Cotton, Lynda Kafer-Cain, and David Jackson. Also present was Kenzie Wheeler the Ryan Town Attorney.

The meeting began with a presentation from Ryan Piersol from the Oklahoma Municipal Power Association.

He was there to simply give an annual report to the town council. Of the many things he reported was that the chairman of OMPA, Charles Lamb, recently passed away. Lamb was also the mayor of Edmond, Oklahoma. Piersol said Lamb was highly respected and will be deeply missed.

Council members approved the Treasurer’s Report (see below).

Next, the bills, claims, and invoices for the town of Ryan were approved for payment.

There being no new business the council meeting was adjourned.

The Ryan Public Utilities Authority was dispensed with.

The final meeting was adjourned at 6:12 pm.

It’s very hot and dry around here. I am thankful that I have an indoor job. I don’t think I could stand to be outside in this heat.

I attended the city council meeting last Tuesday evening. There were several younger folks that attended that had been placed on the agenda for the evening. Sherry and Eddy Pewitt were there to discuss some points of interest with the council. Dylan Sheffield and Johnny Kimbro also discussed some points of interest to benefit our town’s appearance. They got together some folks to do some cleaning up of our local business district. They were working hard this Saturday afternoon. They cleaned the debris from around the pipes under the ramps out here on Washington Street. They did a lot of work on the flower garden located under to mural on the highway. They cleaned the area around the drain at the corner in front of the mural. They filled in some pot holes located in our alley behind the north side of Washington business area. They all worked so hard and during the hottest part of the day. Thanks to all of the folks that participated during this cleaning event. It was so good to see that there are young people that are taking pride in our community. Things can get done when there are groups of people that can all work together to better our communities. The city council also approved Macy Wright setting up a firework stand within the city limits. The council also discussed the need to hire a part time employee during the summer months. They said this job would pay $10.00 per hour and would allow up to 20 hours per week. Anyone interested in part time employment, go in to Ryan City Hall and fill out an application.

This Sunday is Father’s Day and also the day set for the Ryan Cemetery dinner fund raiser. There are tickets being sold at City Hall for a Yeti cooler and cap, and 2 rifles. The tickets for the raffle are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00. Go into City Hall if you would like to purchase some tickets.

There will be another sidewalk sale in downtown Ryan on July 6th. If you missed the first one, then folks will have another chance to check out our local merchants sale items.

Our Methodist Church members got to meet our new pastor, Christy Clark and her husband Mark, and son Conrad this past Sunday. This was Christy’s first Sunday as pastor in our church. She also preaches at Temple Methodist Church. We look forward to having her as our pastor.

I took Brionna back to the Ranch Sunday after church. She had a little longer stay this time. I picked her up Saturday evening a week ago so that she could go to church and see Sandy for the last time serving as our church pastor. She was also wanting to get to meet our new pastor, so, I just let her stay all week so she would be home for both occasions. She got to go to lunch with Terri and Chuck this past Thursday at Circle Dee’s.

Kim’s news for this week:

Foxy and I have been riding Ruffy Tuffy every day. They both got their baths on Sunday. Every morning I’m still able to drink coffee at the Cowboy College Table. Everyone have a blessed week.
