Twenty-five members of Waurika FCCLA traveled to Oklahoma City on September 28 to volunteer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. The group was assigned to pack food items for the Back for Kids program. While there, they packaged over 600 bags, or over 2,000 pounds of food. Waurika Public Schools benefits from the Back Pack for Kids program. The students said they enjoyed volunteering and knowing that their efforts will benefit Waurika school children.
Hurricane Michael School Supply Drive
This year’s student council is putting forth an effort to help the victims of the Hurricane Michael in Florida. Any kids or adults can participate in this school supply drive. We are collecting school supplies to help all those who lost everything to get back into learning. Shelly Morgan, a high school graduate from Waurika in 2001, lives in the impacted region in Florida and is helping to organize relief efforts. Her mom Lupe Edwards, an employee at WES, is going to drive all the supplies to Florida during the Thanksgiving break. The supplies that will be taken up there will be pencils, paper, crayons, notebooks, and other school supplies. They will try their best to help these kids back into their routine. The faster they start learning the happier and better they’ll be. Currently, students in the impacted area of Florida are having school in transportable pods to get them back to a classroom setting. Some of the members helping thrive this supply drive are student council members, Gatlin Black a senior, Landry Forsyth a sophomore, and Madison Roberson a senior. They say they are happy to help and want all the support and care for these kids. Anybody who wants to donate to this school supply drive is welcome to do so. See Magen Allen or Jessica Cornelison at Waurika High School. Students were asked to have supplies turned in by November 14th, but donations will be accepted until Friday, November 16th. The student council appreciates everyone who donates.

Karlee Berthaiume is Waurika’s 2018 Salutatorian
She has become a familiar face on the sidelines at the Waurika football games where she took award winning sports photos of the Eagles in action.
As a matter of fact, that’s one of the fondest memories she holds dear of her time at Waurika high school and what she will miss the most.
She loves photography – it’s her favorite hobby.
When she is not taking pictures she is reading. Her favorite genre is interesting fiction, preferably romance.
Karlee has attended Waurika public schools all her life.
Besides being a member in the Oklahoma Honor Society, she is also a member of Gifted and Talented as well as the Beta Club and the National Honor Society.
She is grateful for the teachers who have taken time out of their lives to help her become who she is.
She loves the color purple and just about any kind of music.
She has already taken six hours of college and would encourage others to take concurrent classes to prepare for their future collegiate careers.
During high school she was involved in scholastic meets, the high school newspaper, the yearbook, fast-pitch softball, and Skills USA.
She recently passed her cosmetology boards after completing 1000 hours of instruction.
Karlee has served her peers as a leader in many different organizations.
She has served as a treasurer for Beta Club, reporter for the National Honor Society, vice-president of her senior class, and editor of the yearbook.
Karlee has also volunteered her time at VBS and Sunday School, assisting younger children.
Karlee has received many awards during her high school years.
Some of these awards include a distinguished merit for online news reporting, excellent sports photo, superior online news photo, academic award for English II and English III, Skills USA local second place hair and second place make-up.
Karlee also has a strong work ethic.
She has worked during the summers at the reading program offered by the Waurika Library and is employed by the Duncan AMC Movie theater.
Working at the theater is very enjoyable for her. She loves being able to see the latest movies for free.
She will continue working at the theater while taking summer courses as well as her fall semester at Cameron University. By the spring semester she will already be classified as a sophomore.
Her goal is to finish her degree in three years. She says she is on a fast track and will take classes year around to accomplish her goal.
She plans on majoring in Elementary Education.
She was inspired by her grandmother Bertha Bersherse, who was a long-time Elementary teacher at Waurika.
She likes the idea of helping to shape and mold the minds of future generations.
Education is something she talks about with a gleam in her eye.
It’s something she feels called to do.
Karlee will do well as an educator. She is great with kids. One day she will help inspire young people to be the best they can possibly be.
We wish her well!

Waurika Student Council Award Students With Noble Character Award
This week, the Waurika High School Student Council recognized their middle school and high school “Good Character Award” winners. The award is given to one middle school and one high school student monthly on account of their good behavior. This award was started by the Student Council Officers with the help of two teachers,
Magen Allen and Janell Rochell. One can be nominated by teachers, faculty, or their peers by sending in a letter to the student council
8th Grader Bosten Smith was chosen for the January award in the middle school division. Her nomination was sent in with a letter describing her as, “kind to everyone, helpful, and positive.” The student council believes Smith exemplifies everything the character award stands for!
Freshman Isaac Gholson received the character award for the high school division. His letter was sent in from a teacher. In the letter, the teacher explained Isaac’s class was given the opportunity to write a letter to one of their classmates complimenting them in order to gain bonus points. Instead, he wrote a card to everyone in his class so no one would feel left out.
Waurika has gifted athletes, scholars, and more. But we also have kind, compassionate students. This award is meant to recognize that and applaud it.
