Hurricane Michael School Supply Drive
This year’s student council is putting forth an effort to help the victims of the Hurricane Michael in Florida. Any kids or adults can participate in this school supply drive. We are collecting school supplies to help all those who lost everything to get back into learning. Shelly Morgan, a high school graduate from Waurika in 2001, lives in the impacted region in Florida and is helping to organize relief efforts. Her mom Lupe Edwards, an employee at WES, is going to drive all the supplies to Florida during the Thanksgiving break. The supplies that will be taken up there will be pencils, paper, crayons, notebooks, and other school supplies. They will try their best to help these kids back into their routine. The faster they start learning the happier and better they’ll be. Currently, students in the impacted area of Florida are having school in transportable pods to get them back to a classroom setting. Some of the members helping thrive this supply drive are student council members, Gatlin Black a senior, Landry Forsyth a sophomore, and Madison Roberson a senior. They say they are happy to help and want all the support and care for these kids. Anybody who wants to donate to this school supply drive is welcome to do so. See Magen Allen or Jessica Cornelison at Waurika High School. Students were asked to have supplies turned in by November 14th, but donations will be accepted until Friday, November 16th. The student council appreciates everyone who donates.

How do you feel about your last year?
I’m excited for my last year, but definitely ready to see what the world has to offer.
What Activities/Organizations have you participated in?
I have participated in Oklahoma High School Rodeo, Beta, NHS, and FFA.
What are your plans for the future?
I want to attend college and rodeo.
Favorite memory at WHS?
My favorite memory is going on FFA trips.
What teacher or class has best prepared you?
Mrs.Hodges helped me a lot while she was at Waurika.
Give advice to an underclassman?:
Keep your head up, don’t be afraid to fail and learn from your mistakes..
Who would you like to thank?
My family, friends, teachers, for not giving up on me.
What fears do you have about leaving?
I’m not scared of leaving. I’m excited to go off and be on my own.
What are you going to miss most about being at WHS?
I’m going to miss my friends the most.
What lessons have you learned from previous classes (class of 2020, etc)?
I’ve learned it’s never too early to start chasing after what you want most.
What event did/do you most look forward to this year?
This year I was most looking forward to Ag. I was excited to see what the new teacher is like. I’m very pleased with all that we have done so far.
Do you have any regrets?
I do not have any regrets. I feel that the decisions I have made have shaped me into who I am today.
FCCLA Honored by OHCE & Friends of Waurika Library
Members of the FCCLA were invited to a Tea provided by the Oklahoma Home and Community Educators along with the Friends of the Waurika Library in appreciation for the time and energy the FCCLA has donated to the community.
A donation from the OHCE was also given to the FCCLA.

Landry Forsyth Selected for Council
Waurika’s Landry Forsyth has been given the distinct honor of being one of 74 students across the state to serve on the 2019 Student Advisory Council instituted by State School Superintendent Joy Hofmeister.
The Advisory Council will have their first meeting in 2020 on January 29th at the State Capitol.
At the meeting the council will discuss issues related to the youth in the State of Oklahoma.
Hofmeister chose these students because of their perspective and willingness to serve. “These are among Oklahoma’s best and brightest high school leaders, and we look forward to learning more about the student perspective on matters of school policy,” Hofmeister said in a prepared statement. “Working with these outstanding young people is a highlight of every spring and their input on topics as diverse as bullying, career readiness and school funding has been instrumental to our state-level decision-making.
The first Advisory Council convened in 2016.
Oklahoma High School students receive science and technology award
WAURIKA – Science teachers from across the state and the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST) are gearing up for the April 2018 version of Oklahoma Science & Technology Month. Students nominated by their teachers will receive certificates of recognition signed by Governor Mary Fallin and OCAST Executive Director Michael Carolina.
The annual event is designed to showcase Oklahoma’s outstanding students who excel in STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students from each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties have been recognized during the special observance since its inception 25 years ago.

FCCLA of Waurika Offers Halloween Safety Instructions
On October 31st, members of WHS FCCLA dressed up in Halloween costumes and went to the elementary school to talk to the students about how to be safe on Halloween night.
FCCLA members split into groups and visited all the classes in the elementary school and talked to the children about safety while trick or treating. They also asked the children Halloween jokes and riddles and passed out pieces of candy.
The children and teachers thoroughly enjoyed FCCLA’s visit.
New Elementary Principal Ready for New Year
Waurika’s New Elementary Principal, Meaghan Johnson, is excited and ready for the upcoming school year.
The Central native enjoys the close knit family atmosphere of Waurika’s rural setting because it reminds her of her own upbringing. Johnson was born, raised and educated in Central. It’s the place she calls home till this day.
After graduating from Central High School, Johnson earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Cameron University, then later went back and acquired her Master’s degree in Education Administration.
Johnson served 7 years as a teacher at Central. She only left to serve in Lawton as an Elementary principal to gain experience as an administrator. Her heart’s desire has always and continues to be able to serve in a rural school setting.
After leaving Lawton, Johnson spent a year teaching for Epic. She believes this experience will serve her well in the upcoming years because of the experience she gained while teaching in a virtual environment.
She enjoys being an advocate for her students and teachers. She longs to give her teachers the tools they need to better educate students.
In her spare time she loves spending time with her family. She and her husband Aron have a plumbing company and raise cattle. When the opportunity arrises, they like to go camping as a family. The Johnsons have three children, Brock – 13, Jake – 8, Hank – 4 years old.

Waurika Students Place at Speech Contest

On Saturday, November 17, members of the Waurika High School speech team attended the Marlow Speech Tournament. Of those attending, freshman Kaytlyn Williams and sophomore Regena Bradley both placed in their respective categories.
Williams, a first-time speech participant, competed in the Dramatic Interpretation event and placed third. Bradley, a second-year speech club member but a first-time competitor, placed 2nd in her event, Original Oratory.
Both girls will continue to practice their pieces in preparation for regionals, which will take place in the spring. Other speech members will begin competing again in January when the team travels to their next meet.
“I could not be more proud of these girls,” speech coach Jessica Cornelison stated. “We really haven’t had a lot of quality practice-time, and both of these girls worked hard on their own to prepare. To be first-time competitors and to step out of their comfort zone is a big deal, to begin with, but qualifying for regionals and bringing home trophies just proves how dedicated and talented these students are.”
