Ryan, Waurika Draw Tough District Assignments

There is an old saying that goes something like this: “You have to beat the best to be the best.”

That will certainly be true of the Ryan and Waurika basketball squads if they hope to make a deep run into the Class A basketball playoffs.

Every high school basketball team in Oklahoma gets to begin post-season play – regardless of a team’s regular season record.

District assignments were released last weekend by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association and the tourneys are set to get under way the weekend of February 14 and 15.

Brackets for the tournament are set to be released today after district meetings were held earlier this past week.

The district champion and district runner up will advance to the regional tournament the following week.

Waurika will be traveling to Alex for the Area 3, District A-8 tournament. Joining the Eagles will be the host school and Fox.

The favorite for both the boys’ and girls’ side of the bracket in the district will be Fox. After last weekend’s play, the Fox boys were undefeated at 19-0 and ranked 14th in Class A. The Lady Foxes held a 13-5 mark after last weekend’s action.

The Eagles and Lady Eagles will need a first-round win to guarantee a spot in the Class A Regional Tournament slated to be held at Central High and Alex.

Ryan has been assigned to the Area 3, District A-5 tournament at Cyril. Joining Ryan is the host school and Central High.

Cyril will be the overwhelming favorite in both the boys and girls tournament. The Pirates are the top-ranked squad in Class A through last weekend, while the Lady Pirates are 15-4 and ranked 12th in Class A.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will also need a first-round win in order to extend their seasons by another week and advance to the regional at Central High and Alex.

Looking forward into the regional tourney, the boys’ side features two ranked teams in Cyril and Fox.

The girls’ regional will potentially feature the second-ranked Canute girls and Cyril, which is ranked 12th.

Only five of the 12 boys teams sport winning records, while on the girls’ side of the region eight of the 12 schools have winning marks.

Three schools from each regional will advance to the area tourney which is slated to be held at Chickasha. The regional champion, regional runner up and the regional consolation bracket champion will advance to the area tourney.

Assigned to the Area 3 are three other ranked boys teams – Vici, Arapaho-Butler and Southwest Covenent.

The girls’ side of the area features three more ranked teams – Vici, Arapaho-Butler and Cheyenne. Plus, Fletcher girls who finished third in the Comanche County Tournament last weekend will be among the possibilities for the area tourney.

It is possible that both Ryan and Waurika teams could advance to the regional tourney, but it would take some late-season improvement for the four squads to see success in the regional tourney or advance to the area tournament.

All four teams could use your support in the district tourneys at Cyril and Alex.

Waurika’s Aaron Torrez Wins State in Power Lifting

Aaron Torrez recently achieved something that no junior high student in recent history has done.

Torrez won the State Championship in power lifting.

He competed in squats, bench and deadlifting this past week in El Reno.

Torrez is just in the seventh grade and this is his second year to compete on the weight lifting team.

Last year he competed at the state level and finished in 5th place.

He now would like to win the state title every year until he graduates.

Torrez has been a Waurika Eagle since Kindergarten.

In his spare time he loves to fish.

Smith, Mora Lead Waurika Thinclads at Alex Invitational

Turner Mora and Asia Smith each placed in two events to pace Waurika’s performance at the Alex Invitational a week ago today.

In the team competition, the Eagles finished tied for eighth place with Oklahoma School For the Deaf. Both teams had 14 points. Cordell won the meet with 146 points.

The Lady Eagles finished 10th in the team race with 27.5 points, while Rush Springs and Cordell tied for the team title with 101 points each.

Mora helped the Eagles’ point total by placing in the 400 meters and the long jump.

Mora circled the track in 55.76 to earth fifth place in the 400 meters. He managed a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.5.

Waurika’s other points came in the 3,200 meter and 1,600 meter relays. Both squads finished fifth.

The Eagles turned in a time of 9:49.32 in the 3,200 meter relay and posted a time of 3:52.64 in the 1,600 meter relay.

Smith, a freshman, placed fourth in both the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters to pace the Lady Eagles.

Smith’s time in the 1,600 meters was 6:29.55 and she turned in a time of 13:38.12 in the 3,200 meters.

Lexie Streeter, also a freshman for the Lady Eagles, finished fifth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:09.89.

Madison Roberson finished with a silver medal in the shot put. Her throw of 33-0 was her best performance of the season.

Sara Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles by tying for fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 3-10.

The 3,200 meter relay team for the Lady Eagles accounted for the other team points. The squad finished fourth with a time of 12:39.57.

Other Waurika athletes competing at Alex included Kevin Garcia, Octavio Gomez, Gustavo Gomez and Nick Alvarado for the Eagles and Kaci Reynolds, Dallas Fristoe, Madison Christian and Brooke Williams for the Lady Eagles.

The next action for the Waurika track squads will be tomorrow when the Eagles will host their eight-man invitational competition. The meet begins at 9 a.m. at the Waurika track.

Basketball awards for Ryan and Waurika have been announced by the Southern Eight and Oil Field conferences.

Waurika’s Liberti Simmons nabbed the top honor for the Oil Field Conference as she was named the most valuable player of the conference for the 2022 season.

Simmons was the leading scorer for Coach Kalee Baxter’s Lady Eagles and helped lead Waurika to a 20-win season that ended in the regional consolation bracket finals.

Also earning an individual award for Waurika was Tallin Mora. Mora was named the Southern Eight’s outstanding defensive player.

Mora was a defensive standout for the Lady Eagles and was often tabbed to guard the top players of teams Waurika faced throughout the season.

Frederick’s Dannie McClung and Cade Roady snared the most valuable player awards for the Southern Eight Conference.

Chrissa Gomez of Geronimo was named the Southern Eight’s top offensive player of the year on the girls’ side, while Big Pasture’s Carson Coats was named the top offensive boys player for the conference.

Brennan Turner of Big Pasture was voted by the coaches as the outstanding defensive player for the boys.

The Oil Field Conference selects only a most valuable player and Velma-Alma’s Tyler Stewart grabbed the honor among the conference’s boys.

Selected to the Southern Eight all-conference team for the Lady Eagles were Simmons and Gracie Walling.

Cassidie Berry of Waurika was named to the all-conference squad by the Oil Field coaches.

Treyton Torrez of Waurika was an all-conference selection in both the Oil Field and Southern Eight conferences. Torrez, who missed a few of the early games of the season, was the top point producer for coach Garret Bachand’s Eagles.

Ryan’s Racen Williams was named to the all-conference team for the Southern Eight Conference. He was the only Cowboy selected from coach Lane Weldon’s team that finished with a 14-9 mark. Williams was the leading scorer for the Cowboys.

The Southern Eight also named Ryan’s Jasmine Villarreal to the all-conference team. She was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls in the 2022 campaign.

Berry, Isaac Camarillo and Slade Cathey of Waurika were selected to play in the Southern Eight’s all-star game that is slated for Monday at Geronimo.

Mora and Malachi Dodson will represent Waurika in the Oil Field Conference all-star game to be held at Waurika on March 8.

Ryan’s Alicen Williams, Westin Jennings and Landen Alexander were selections for the Southern Eight all-star fray that will feature athletes from all the schools in the conference.

Cowgirls Fall in District Title Game to Central High

Central High raced to a 14-2 first quarter lead and never looked back in earning the district title over the Ryan Cowgirls last Saturday at the Central High gym.

The Lady Bronchos earned a 47-21 decision to advance into the regional tourney that begins today.

Ryan also advances to today’s regional tournament in the consolation bracket.

The Cowgirls were to have met Ringling at 1:30 p.m. today at Central High. The winner will advance and the loser’s season will end.

If the Cowgirls get by Ringling they would play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Union City.

In the district championship game the Cowgirls came into the contest with one girl diagnosed with the flu and another player with flu-like symptoms. This severely limited the Cowgirls’ attempt to pull off an upset and claim the district crown.

After dominating the first quarter, the Lady Bronchos ended the second quarter with Meagan Anderson hitting two treys – her second and third of the quarter – to give Central High an insurmountable 27-7 advantage at the half.

The Cowgirls came out of the locker room and scored the first three points of the third quarter to close the gap to 27-10, but that was as close as the Cowgirls would get the rest of the contest.

Lily York led the Cowgirls with 13 points, but nine of those points came from the charity stripe.

Anderson had 13 for Central High and she was one of nine players that scored for the Lady Bronchos.

The Cowgirls earned the spot in the championship game by upsetting the second seed Bray-Doyle, 46-31, last Friday at Central High.

In Friday’s game, the Cowgirls fell behind 7-2 in the first quarter, but two buckets by Samantha Good narrowed the gap to 7-6 at the end of the period.

The Lady Donkeys kept the Cowgirls at bay during the second quarter with the biggest led coming at the 3:42 mark when Kyndalin Byrd sank two charity tosses to build the lead to 14-9.

The Cowgirls were the only team to score the rest of the half and that came on a York free throw with 1:41 left in the half to put the margin at 14-10 heading to the intermission.

Bray-Doyle extended the lead to six in the early moments of the second quarter, but a three-point play and a layup by York put Ryan within one at 16-15 with 5:59 left in the third quarter.

It was at this point the Cowgirls took over the contest with a 11-6 spurt to close the third quarter.

The Lady Donkeys were able to cut into the lead and trailed 31-28 with 4:50 left in the game, but that was as close as Bray-Doyle would get the rest of the night.

Juliet Spangler connected on two charity tosses and Kenzie Lewis drained a trey to build the lead to 36-28 – the biggest of the night at that point.

Bray-Doyle would cut the lead to five at the 3:02 mark, but two free throws by Good and another layup by York gave Ryan a 40-31 advantage with 2:43 to play and from that point it was a matter of hitting enough free throws to thwart any hope of a rally by Bray-Doyle.

Down the stretch the Cowgirls connected on only six of 12 free throw attempts, but the Lady Donkeys could not take advantage of the misses partly due to missing four charity tosses during the same time frame.

The largest lead of the game was the final score that gave the Ryan a 15-point cushion. Good closed out the scoring with two free throws with :27.4 left in the game.

York led the way for the Cowgirls with 15 points, while Good contributed 12 and Spangler added 10.

The Cowgirls only shot 55 percent from the charity stripe, but were outstanding taking care of the basketball with only nine turnovers.

The Cowgirls committed only two turnovers in the second half, while Bray-Doyle had 20 turnovers for the game – 13 of them in the second half.

Ryan also held a 34-32 advantage in rebounding.

The Cowboys suffered a 50-42 upset at the hands of Bray-Doyle last Friday at Central High in the first round of district tourney play.

Bray-Doyle avenged a 30-point loss to the Cowboys with the upset victory.

The Cowboys led throughout the first half holding a 19-9 lead at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter when Dawson Tomberlin connected on a three-point field goal.

A Grayson Tomberlin layup with 1:51 left before the break gave Ryan another 10-point lead, but Curtis Cox connected on a trey for Bray-Doyle with 1:21 to play in the half to set the halftime score at 24-17.

The second half, however, was a nightmare for the Cowboys as they could simply not score.

G. Tomberlin opened the second half with a steal and a layup that put the Cowboys in front, 26-17, but the Donkeys answered with a bucket.

At the 5:16 mark, G. Tomberlin connected on a 10-footer giving Ryan a 28-19 advantage but from that point the Donkeys controlled the rest of the quarter.

The Donkeys went on a 14-5 run to end the third quarter and knot the game at 33 to begin the final period.

The Cowboy defense went to sleep in the final frame as the Donkeys hit five layups during the fourth quarter en route to outscoring the Cowboys, 17-9, in the quarter.

The Donkeys overcame 23 turnovers, but 15 of them were committed in the first half.

The Donkeys managed to get the victory despite hitting only 12 of 26 free throw attempts, but the Cowboys were not any better connecting on only nine of 21 attempts.

G. Tomberlin and Tate Kimbro each had eight points to lead the Cowboys in scoring.

DISTRICT TOURNAMENT NOTES:

The Cowboys dropped to 71-66 in district tournament games since first entering the district tournament in 1929….It was only the second meeting between the Cowboys and Donkeys in a district tournament and the Donkeys have won both games….The five wins for the Cowboys is the fewest since the 2009 season when Ryan managed only a pair of victories for the season….The loss to the Donkeys snapped a three-game winning streak by the Cowboys….Playing their final game in a Cowboy basketball uniform were Joseph Martin, Dawson Tomberlin, River Williams and Tate Kimbro…The Cowgirls are now 62-62 in district tourney games in school history and hold a 20-24 mark in district championship games….Ryan’s girls are 0-2 against Central High in district tourney games….The Cowgirls have lost five of the last six meetings with Central High….The 21 points scored by the Cowgirls is the fewest points in a district tourney game since 2000 when the Cowgirls could manage only 19 points against Waurika….The victory for the Cowgirls over Bray-Doyle was the first meeting ever between the two schools in a district tournament.

Ryan Falls Short in Homecoming Game

Just when you thought the football season for the Ryan Cowboys could not get worse, the Cowboys suffered a 64-8 defeat at the hands of Thackerville at Bob Givens Sports Complex last Friday night.

The loss was difficult but the Cowboys lost starting quarterback Racen Williams early in the game and the only option was to insert sophomore receiver Julian Rodriguez at quarterback who had not had any snaps at the position in practice or in games this season.

And while Rodriguez did an admirable job in the difficult circumstances, the lack of experience did limit the options for the Ryan offense in the homecoming contest with the Wildcats.

The Cowboys had already lost another player during the week and if Williams cannot recover from his injury, the Cowboys will have only 10 or 11 players to suit out in tomorrow night’s contest at Mountain View.

Mountain View-Gotebo comes into the district game with the Cowboys with a spotless 4-0 mark and ranked fourth in Class C. Kickoff for the game is set for 7 p.m.

With all of the difficult circumstances and adversity the Cowboys are facing last Friday night’s contest added to it as Thackerville hit for two quick scores in the first two minutes of the game.

The Wildcats scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass and passed for the two-point conversion to go on top 8-0 only 34 seconds into the game.

The Cowboys were forced to punt on their first possession and Thackerville wasted no time in scoring again – this time on a 49-yard pass. The pass for the two points was good and the Wildcats had a 16-0 lead with 10:13 still left in the first quarter.

On the next possession the Cowboys fumbled the ball and Thackerville recovered at midfield to set up a seven-play drive that included 20 yards of penalties against the Wildcats.

Blayne Giourgas, who had scored the first two touchdowns for the Wildcats, capped the drive with a 26-yard scoring run. The run for two points failed, but Thackerville was in front 22-0 with 7:25 to play in the first quarter.

On Ryan’s first play from scrimmage after the kickoff the Wildcats intercepted a Cowboy pass and returned it 26 yards to put Thackerville in business on offense at the Ryan 20.

It took Thackerville only four plays to score with Aziz Hernandez scoring from seven yards out. The conversion pass was successful and the lead had increased to 30-0 with 5:40 left in the first quarter.

Ryan was again forced to punt on the next possession and Giourgas fielded the punt at the Wildcat 42-yard line and raced 58 yards for the touchdown. The run failed, but the Wildcats held a 36-0 lead with 3:47 left in the first quarter.

Both teams turned the ball over on their next possessions with Trey Bryant recovering a Wildcat fumble to give Ryan the ball at the Thackerville 41.

On first down, Rodriguez found Skyler Wickware on a short pass and Wickware broke a couple of tackles and sped down the right sideline for the 41-yard touchdown.

Rodriguez found Carson Cooper on a pass for the two-point conversion and Ryan had cut the lead to 36-8 with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

Thackerville answered with another score before the end of the quarter. An onside kick was covered by the Wildcats and it put Thackerville at its own 49 to start the scoring drive.

In five plays Thackerville found the end zone as Giourgas made a diving catch just inside the goal line for a 14-yard score. The try for two failed, but the Wildcats had built an insurmountable 42-8 lead with just 21 seconds left in the first quarter.

Ryan turned the ball over on downs on its next possession and Thackerville began another scoring drive. This time it took the Wildcats only four plays to move 37 yards. Hernandez scored on a 17-yard run and Wade Oglesby caught a two-point conversion pass to increase the lead to 50-8 with 9:23 left in the second frame.

Thackerville added two more scores before halftime to end the game by the mercy rule.

Hernandez caught a 29-yard pass with 4:14 to play in the second quarter to put the Wildcats in front, 56-8.

Justice Rodriguez capped the Thackerville scoring onslaught with a 56-yard run with 2:56 left before the half. The Wildcats ran for the two-point conversion to set the final margin.

The Cowboys could not muster anything on offense most of the night as they picked up only one first down – and that was on the scoring play.

COWBOY CORRAL: The Cowboys are now 0-4 on the season and the last time Ryan has opened a season with four straight losses came in the 1994 season….Ryan finished the night with minus-9 yards rushing and that is a new school record that broke the old mark of minus-3 against Snyder in the 2018 playoff game…The 64 points scored by the Wildcats is the highest total scored in the series with Ryan….The previous high score by Thackerville as 50 points in a 1993 loss….The 56-point margin of victory by the Wildcats is the most in the series that dates back to 1980….The previous greatest margin of victory for Thackerville against Ryan was 46 in a 2013 contest….This was the second loss to Thackerville in a homecoming game in two homecoming encounters….Ryan is 6-4 in the last 10 homecoming games.

Big Plays Enable Waurika to Earn First Grid Win of the Season

Waurika rebounded from its season opening loss to Laverne in convincing fashion with a 54-6 victory over Wilson last Friday night at Wilson.

The Eagles hit the road again tomorrow night (Friday) when they face Class B’s top-ranked Shattuck Indians. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Indians, 3-0, have defeated Tipton, Destiny Christian and fourth-ranked Cherokee.

Waurika really had little resistance for the Eagles from Carter County as Waurika was able to score on big play after big play in the contest that ended with nine minutes left in the third quarter.

Waurika opened the scoring when Treyton Torrez found Octavio Gomez for a 12-yard completion. Kevin Garcia ran for the two points and with 9:08 left in the initial quarter, Waurika led, 8-0.

Wilson answered with its only score of the night. Michael Whatley caught a 24-yard scoring pass from Michel Cain. Waurika stopped the two-point conversion and with 3:19 showing on the first quarter clock, Waurika held a 16-6 advantage.

On the next possession, Torrez got his first touchdown of the night on a 57-yard run. The Waurika quarterback also ran for the two points and with 3:19 left in the quarter, Waurika led, 24-6.

Waurika added a pair of scores in the second quarter.

Garcia scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 19-yard run and he added the two-point conversion to put Waurika in front, 32-6, with 9:44 left before intermission.

Torrez scored again – this time on a one-yard plunge. Trent Arellano added the two point conversion and Waurika was in front, 40-6, with 6:02 before halftime.

Angel Garcia started the second half with a 40-yard kickoff return that gave Waurika tremendous field position.

K. Garcia picked up the touchdown on first down from 27 yards out and after Torrez ran for the two points, Waurika was in command with a 48-6 advantage.

Matt Arriola closed out the scoring for Waurika with a 19-yard jaunt at the nine minute mark that ended the game because of the 45-point mercy rule.

Torrez led the Eagles in rushing with 170 yards on just 13 carries. K. Garcia was also over 100 yards for the night with 108 paces on just six carries.

EAGLE FLIGHTS: This was the 77th meeting between Waurika and Wilson and Waurika leads the series, 54-20-3….It is possible they two schools meet in the two years where a complete schedule is unavailable…Waurika has now won five games in a row against Wilson. The third longest winning streak in the series that dates back to the first meeting in 1921….The 54 points score by Waurika is the fourth highest total in the series with last year’s total of 62 being the top scoring mark against Wilson….The upcoming contest with Shattuck will be the second meeting in school history with the Indians taking a 25-8 victory in a 1988 playoff game.

Playoff Loss Does Not Dampen 2018 Waurika Grid Success

The quarterfinal loss suffered by the Waurika Eagles certainly was hard to take, but it should not take away from one of the best football seasons in school history.

Waurika finished the season with an 11-1 record and that mark ties for the fifth most wins in a season for the Eagles.

The Eagles were ranked ninth in the final Class B poll by The Daily Oklahoman. The last time a Waurika team finished ranked in the top 10 was in 1997 when the Eagles were ranked seventh in the final rankings.

The 11 victories were the most since Waurika put together 12 wins in the 1988 season.

Waurika was undefeated in the regular season and that has happened only five other times in the 99-year history of the sport at Waurika.

Not even the state title team in 1951 finished the regular season with an unblemished record.

Two of the unbeaten seasons came in 1928 and 1933, which were before the playoff system began in Oklahoma. The records for those two years feature some tie scores in the results.

The 1928 team finished 7-0-5 and in 1933 the Eagles were 8-0-2.

The 2018 squad claimed the second district title since beginning eight-man play.

The season-ending loss in the quarterfinals marked the first quarterfinal playoff appearance by a Waurika team since the 1996 squad defeating Ringling, 14-6, before falling in the semifinal round.

In Waurika’s 11 wins they have played beyond halftime only three times. Waurika was involved in a total of 10 games that did not go the full four quarters.

The Eagles outscored opponents by an average of 49.3 to 13.3. Waurika scored an incredible 498 points in the first half against their opponents while surrendering only 146 – and 52 of those points came in the loss to Davenport.

Opponents only scored 14 points in the second half against the Eagles, but that is mainly due to most games ending at halftime because of the 45-point mercy rule.

Certainly, the 2018 squad coached by first-year mentor Joe Allen accomplished a great deal. But, there were also some outstanding individual performances during the season.

Turner Mora was outstanding directing the Eagle offense from the quarterback slot. The talented junior signal-caller finished with 24 rushing touchdowns, two kickoff returns for scores and 18 two-point conversion runs for a total of 192 points during the season. He also threw 12 touchdown passes during the season.

Colton Bryant, a senior running back for the Eagles was the second leading scorer on the team. He rushed for 15 touchdowns and had three touchdown receptions. He also returned three interceptions for scores and had 20 two-point conversions.

The longest run from scrimmage for a score during the season came in the Eagles’ critical win at Wilson. Zachary Brown raced 80 yards for a score to top the list of long-distance touchdown runs.

Bryant and Mora also had long scoring runs. Bryant had a 78-yard run against Grandfield, while Mora scored from 71 yards out against Bray-Doyle.

The longest scoring pass play came against Central High when Mora connected with Hunter Wesberry from 44 yards out.

The Eagles had only two kickoff returns all season and Mora had both of those. A 75-yard return against Carnegie was the longest of the season.

Bryant’s 50-yard interception return against Ryan was the longest of three interceptions returned for a touchdown and Bryant had all three of them.

Waurika returned five opponents’ fumbles for scores. Edwin Garcia’s 55-yard scoop-and-score against Caddo was the longest return of the year.

The Eagles will try to build on the success of the 2018 campaign next season and will have seven returning starters to help provide some stability for the 2019 squad, which will likely be tabbed to repeat as district champions.

Waurika Looks to Take Control of District Race Against Ryan

Not much has to be said or written about the rivalry between Waurika and Ryan.

With the two communities just 10 miles apart, it is natural for the two schools to be rivals in all sports competition.

The football version of the rivalry is tomorrow night at Waurika’s Cy Sloan Stadium and kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

In many of the years of this series the two teams have also been competing against each other for district honors and 2018 is no different.

And even though the series in football took a break (except for two seasons) after Ryan moved to eight-man football, the rivalry on the gridiron was resumed in 2012 when Waurika dropped to eight-man football.

The series of eight-man meetings have been split at three wins apiece for the two teams. Ryan won the first two and then Waurika won three straight before last year’s thrilling 44-36, double-overtime victory by the Cowboys in 2017.

It will be Waurika’s homecoming and that will give the Eagles added incentive to be able to revenge last year’s heart-breaking loss.

Waurika has a huge advantage overall in the series that dates back to 1919 – the first year the two schools played football. The Eagles lead the series 40-17-3.

The Eagles built a good part of that advantage with 11 straight wins between 1963 and 1973 before Ryan broke the string in the 1974 season with a 28-0 victory over Waurika on the Eagles’ home field.

The game has been close and it has been lopsided. There have been two one-point games between the Cowboys and Eagles – in 1946 and 1954 – and each team came out on top once.

Waurika’s largest margin of victory came in a 1971 conquest of the Cowboys as the Eagles whitewashed Ryan, 64-0.

In 1937, Ryan earned its largest margin of victory over the Eagles with a 37-0 win.

Ryan has twice scored 44 points against Waurika – the highest number of points scored by the Cowboys in the series and both of those games were eight-man contests.

Waurika’s greatest margin of victory was the 64-point win in 1971.

Two of the three ties in the series were scoreless and they came in back-to-back years in 1942 and 1943.

Waurika has 15 shutouts over the Cowboys through the years, while Ryan has seven of shutouts. Both include the two scoreless games.

Waurika comes into this year’s game with a 5-0 record, while Ryan is 4-2 on the year.

Waurika had its biggest win of the year last week with a 38-6 decision over Wilson.

The Cowboys exploded for an 84-38 victory over Empire last Friday night, but that was helped along by two defensive scores and a kickoff return.

So, both offenses are potent and it could be an old-fashioned eight-man shootout.

Waurika has been a bit more dominating with only last week’s win over Wilson going past halftime.

The Cowboys will have to try to corral the team speed of the Eagles and figure out a way to keep the offensive momentum gained against Empire going against Waurika.

The two schools have three common opponents this season – Temple, Grandfield and Caddo. Both teams had runaway wins over Temple and Grandfield, but Ryan dropped a 57-26 decision to the Bruins, while Waurika rolled to a 48-0 win over Caddo.

Waurika features a potent running attack with Turner Mora, Colton Bryant, Kevin Garcia and Zachary Brown.

The Cowboys will counter on offense with a more wide-open attack behind quarterback Grayson Tomberlin, who has thrown for over 900 yards this season. He has also rushed for 655 yards.

However, the Cowboys are not one-dimensional as Skylar Parkhill has been the favorite target of Tomberlin’s passing attack. The Cowboy senior has rushed for 466 yards and 10 rushing scores.

Both teams will be challenged defensively to stop the offensive attacks.

Look for a contest with plenty of scoring if Ryan can solve the Waurika defense that has only allowed three touchdowns in five games.

Ryan Drops Road Game at Caddo

A year ago the Ryan Cowboys traveled to Caddo and a rally fell short in a narrow loss, but in 2018 Caddo would not permit a Cowboy rally.

The Bruins scored 25 unanswered points in the second half and rolled to a 57-26 victory over the Cowboys on the Bruins’ home field last Thursday night.

The game was moved to Thursday to prevent playing in inclement weather and it proved to be a wise decision as many Friday night games were postponed to last Saturday or Monday.

The Cowboys will enjoy a bye week this week since they played in Zero Week. Ryan will begin district play when they return to the gridiron a week from Friday as Empire will come to Bob Givens Sports Complex.

The contest at Caddo started off well for the Cowboys as Grayson Tomberlin found Skyler Parkhill on a 21-yard touchdown pass. Parkhill ran for the two points and Ryan held an 8-0 lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter.

The Bruins answered and tied the score at the 2:56 mark of the first quarter. John Holbrook connected on the first of his five touchdown passes to put Caddo on the board. Chisolm Booth caught the touchdown pass and Avrey Brown grabbed the two-point conversion pass to knot the score at 8-8.

Ryan came back on its next drive to get a score. Travis Fristoe got the touchdown on a nine-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed and Ryan held a 14-8 lead with 39 seconds to play in the first quarter.

The second quarter proved to be the Cowboys’ downfall. Caddo scored three times and all three were touchdown passes by Holbrook. Booth, Brown and Payton Brewer were on the receiving end of the scores.

The first score came at the 8:26 mark and the play covered 42 yards. Brown was on the receiving end of the two-point conversion pass to put Caddo in front, 16-14.

Caddo got its second score with 1:37 to play before intermission and the pass to Brown covered four yards. Brown also caught the two-point conversion pass giving Caddo a 22-14 advantage.

The Cowboys then failed to cover an onside kick attempt by the Bruins and Caddo made the Cowboys pay with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Brewer. Cameron McClain ran for the two points to put Caddo in front, 30-14, with 1:25 left before intermission.

Ryan was able to trim the margin in the final seconds of the second quarter as they quickly drove down the field and Tomberlin scored on a two-yard run as the clock expired. The run for two points failed leaving Ryan trailing, 32-20.

The Cowboys started the second half like the first half. Ryan was able to get another score as Tomberlin found Parkhill for a 67-yard touchdown completion. A run for two points failed, but the Cowboys had cut the margin to 32-26 midway through the third quarter.

That would be final score of the night for the Cowboys.

Caddo answered the Cowboy threat with three touchdowns in the final 4:58 of the third quarter to give the Bruins a 50-26 lead heading into the final quarter.

Late in the fourth quarter the Bruins tacked on another score as Hunter Speers ran six yards for a score and Holbrook kicked the extra point for Caddo to set the final margin.

Turnovers played a key role in the contest as that thwarted many Ryan drives. The Cowboys lost three fumbles and had one interception.

The Cowboys also had trouble converting third downs. Ryan was only two of 11 on third down conversions, while Caddo was nine of 12.

Caddo rolled up 502 total yards on offense, but the Cowboys managed to record 465 yards of offense and both teams averaged 8.2 yards per play.

COWBOY NOTES: The 57 points scored by the Bruins marks the most points scored against Ryan in this eight-game series that dates back to 1970…The previous high by Caddo was 36 points in a 36-20 victory over Ryan in 1972…The series is now tied at 4-4 and Caddo has won three straight games from the Cowboys….The 83 points scored between the two teams is the highest number of points scored in the eight games the Bruins and Cowboys have played…This marked the second straight game Tomberlin has passed for over 200 yards in a game…Parkhill’s 189 receiving yards tied the school record for most yards receiving in a game…Parkhill set the new mark in the previous week’s victory over Maysville….Four different Caddo receivers caught touchdown passes in the game…The 502 yards of offense by Caddo is the sixth highest total by a Ryan opponent in school history.
