District Basketball Titles Are Few For Ringling Roundball Teams

0

Most everyone knows about the tremendous football tradition that has been established by Ringling over the past 45 years.

There have been several state titles won by the Blue Devil gridders, but the success has not carried over to the hardwood at the eastern most school in Jefferson County.

The Ringling basketball squads have never made an appearance in a state tournament. And, the Ringling boys have never played in an area tourney since that layer of playoffs began in 1970.

The Ringling boys and girls basketball teams have only played for a regional title a total of four times. Three of those regional championship games involved the Lady Blue Devils. Ringling lost all four of those games.

The Blue Devils have played in two regional loser’s bracket championship games, but dropped contests to Wynnewood and Healdton.

The Lady Blue Devils have appeared in the regional loser’s bracket title game four times and hold a 2-2 mark in those contests. The Ringling girls advanced to the area tourney after wins over Elmore City in 1989 and Healdton in 1986.

The Ringling girls have made four appearances in the area tourney, but hold just a 1-5 record. The only win came in a 1991 Class 2A area at Chickasha as Ringling defeated Apache, 69-47.

The last district title for the Blue Devils came in 2004 at the Class 2A tourney at Walters. Ringling handed Walters a 42-39 setback in the title game.

Ringling won its first district championship in 1946 at the Class B tournament hosted by Dundee. The Blue Devils edged Healdton, 17-16, in the semifinals and then downed Fox, 30-12, in the championship game.

While it is possible not all the district tourney results have been located, it is believed that the Blue Devils played in their first district tournament at Waurika in 1931. Ringling fell to Ryan, 21-19, in the first round.

The latest district tournament title for the Lady Blue Devils came in 2007 when Ringling rolled to a 48-31 victory over Healdton in the Class 2A tourney at Healdton.

Out of the 15 district titles claimed by the Lady Blue Devils, five of them were won because Ringling was the only entry in the Class A tournament played at Healdton from 1950 to 1954.

The first time the Lady Blue Devils won a championship game came in 1956 when Ringling defeated Fox, 38-29, in a contest played at Healdton.

The first result of a district tournament game played by the Ringling girls came in 1948 in the first round of the Class B fray at Healdton. The Lady Blue Devils fell to Dundee, 19-17.

It is possible Ringling’s girls competed in a district tournament before that, but the 1948 encounter is the first result that was located.

Both Ringling teams have played for a number of district titles, but that is because in recent years the Class 2A districts have featured only two teams.

Ringling most often played the district tournament at Healdton. The Ringling boys have played in the district tourney at Healdton a total of 30 times. The Lady Blue Devils have been in 25 district tourneys at Healdton.

Ringling first hosted a district tournament in 1951. The Lady Blue Devils were the only entry and the Blue Devils picked up a 25-21 win over Healdton and then fell to Wilson, 68-27, in the championship game.

The district tourney for Ringling has been played at Ringling a total of 10 times through the years with 2006 being the last time Ringling served as the host.

The last four seasons Ringling has competed in Class A, but prior to that Ringling was in Class 2A for 31 of the previous 37 years.

This past season the Blue Devils fell to Verden, 58-53, in the semifinals and it was the 75th loss for Ringling’s boys in district tournament play. The Lady Blue Devils won a first-round game over Verden, but fell to Canute, 92-53, in the title game.

Cowgirls’ Carter Claims Gold Medal at Elgin Invitational

0

Despite having only five competitors the Ryan Cowgirls finished in fifth place in the tough Elgin Invitational Track Meet last Thursday.

The Cowgirls amassed 68 points in the small school division which consisted of schools from Class 3A to Class A. Hollis, a Class 2A school, won the meet with 135 points.

And, this small contingent of Cowgirl thinclads had a memorable day in the meet that replaced the canceled Stratford meet that was originally on the Cowgirl track schedule.

Holland Carter led the Cowgirls with a gold medal in the 800 meters. Her time of 3:01.3 was impressive considering the windy conditions.

Lilybet Harmon earned a bronze medal in the 800 meters with a time of 3:15.27.

The other highlight of the day came in the 1,600 meter relay. While the Cowgirls managed only a fourth place finish in the event, the squad set a school record with a time of 5:12.17, besting the previous school record mark of 5:15.0 set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference meet.

The 1,600 meter relay team consists of Carter, Harmon, Lily York and Juliet Spangler.

The same group of girls earned a silver medal in the 3,200 meter relay with a time of 12:22.37 – which was well short of the school mark this relay team set earlier this season at Cache.

The distance races are definitely the strength of the Cowgirls this season as Spangler and York added to the point total with high finishes in the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters.

Spangler earned a silver medal in both events. Her time of 6:28.25 is behind her own school record time of 6:16.82 and is the fifth best in school history.

York was right behind her teammate and earned a bronze medal with a time of 6:31.45, which put her at sixth on the school record chart in the 1,600 meters.

Spangler and York also finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,200 meters. Spangler turned in a time of 14:15.37, while York finished the race with a time of 14:57.55. Both were well back of the winning time of 13:12.65.

This meet had a unique format in that participants from schools in all classes ran together in each event. The 3,200 meter relay team actually ran a better time than the Lawton MacArthur and Lawton High squads.

The 68 points scored by the team in the meet was the second highest point total by a Cowgirl track team in school history.

The Cowgirls will try to improve on their early season performances tomorrow (Friday) at the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational Meet. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., while the running events will get under way at 10 a.m.

Cowgirls Snap Seven-Game Skid With Win Over OSD

Juliet Spangler exploded for 31 points to lift the Ryan Cowgirls over Oklahoma School for the Deaf, 46-29, at Sulphur Tuesday night.

In the boys’ game Oklahoma School for the Deaf broke out to a nine-point lead early and fought off a Cowboy rally to claim a 54-50 victory over the Cowboys.

Spangler’s scoring spree for the Cowgirls was the most points scored by a Cowgirl since Alana Martin poured in 38 points against Grandfield in 2009.

In the first quarter Spangler, a sophomore, scored eight of the Cowgirls’ 10 points as Ryan took a 10-6 lead over the Lady Indians heading to the second period.

The Cowgirls needed every point by Spangler in the first half as OSD hung tough and trailed, 24-18, at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Cowgirls buckled down on defense holding the Lady Indians to only a single point, while the Cowgirls were putting up 16 points to extend the lead to 40-19.

Spangler had only four points to finish out the contest, but she had 12 two-pointers, one trey and connected on four of nine free throws to account for the 31 points.

Lily York also scored in double figures with 12 points for the Cowgirls who are still short-handed because of the injury bug.

Steve Spangler’s club improved to 5-10 on the year and the Cowgirls hold a 9-0 lead in the series with OSD that began in 2013.

The Cowboys fell behind early, 14-5, after the first frame, but narrowed the gap to 21-15 by halftime.

Thanks to some pin-point shooting from the outside, the Cowboys knotted the game at 29 after the third quarter.

The Cowboy rally was aided by three treys – one each by Dawson Tomberlin, Grayson Tomberlin and River Williams.

The fourth quarter turned into a real dog fight.

The Cowboys scored 21 points in the final quarter, but OSD managed to put 25 on the board behind Dylan Evans’ 16-point outburst.

Poor free throw shooting doomed the Cowboys as they hit only three of 10 attempts from the charity stripe. OSD was not much better but had nearly three times the opportunities. The Indians finished 14 of 28 for the game.

Evans finished with 28 points for the Indians, while G. Tomberlin led the Cowboys in scoring with 14 points. Joseph Martin added 12 points for Coach Judd Matthes’ squad.

The Cowboys fall to 3-12 on the year and it was the first loss to OSD in 10 meetings with the Indians on the hardwood.

Cowboys Gain First District Win in Convincing Fashion

It was a remarkable night at Bob Givens Sports Complex last Friday night as the Ryan Cowboys rolled to an 84-38 victory over District B-4 foe Empire.

Scoring 84 points in a game is quite a feat, but it is incredible when you discover Ryan scored all 84 points in the final three quarters of play.

The Cowboys will try to maintain the momentum gained with the victory over the Bulldogs when they make the short drive up Highway 81 to battle Waurika tomorrow night (Friday). Kickoff at Cy Sloan Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.

Both Waurika and Ryan enter the contest with a 1-0 mark in district play. Waurika is 5-0 overall, while Ryan is 4-2.

Last Friday’s first quarter was defined by two long drives by both Empire and Ryan that resulted in no scoring.

Ryan drove to the Empire 15 after getting an interception by Kalen Weldon on the first series of the game, but turned the ball over on downs.

Empire took over and took 16 plays to go from the Empire 19 to the Ryan 19, but on the next two plays the Ryan defense came up big and handed the Bulldogs losses of nine and two yards to turn the ball back to the Cowboys on downs late in the first quarter.

This gave the Cowboys their worst field position of the night at the Ryan 30, but the Cowboys methodically took the ball and drove the 70 yards for a score. Skylar Parkhill ran the final nine yards for the score and Dallas Fristoe ran for the two points to give Ryan an 8-0 lead with 7:50 to play in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff the Cowboys perfectly executed a pooch kick and Weldon pounced on the ball before Empire could field it to put the Cowboys back in business.

The Cowboys took quick advantage of the Bulldog miscue and drove 38 yards in just three plays. Parkhill rushed for all 38 yards – the final carry covering five yards for the score. Parkhill ran for the two points and quickly Ryan was up, 16-0, with 7:06 left in the half.

Empire took possession at its own 48 yard line after an onside kick attempt and this time the Bulldogs answered with a scoring drive of 52 yards on eight plays. Peyton Booth ran the final 20 yards for the score and quarterback Mitchell Monteith ran for the two-point conversion to cut the Ryan lead in half at 16-8 with 4:46 left to play.

Possibly the play of the game for the Cowboys came on the ensuing kickoff when Travis Fristoe took the ball in the middle of the field at the Ryan 35 and maneuvered his way through a wall of tacklers and finally cut out to the left side for a clear path to the end zone. Parkhill ran for the two points and Ryan had a 24-8 lead with 4:40 left in the half.

The Bulldogs had an answer, however, as Empire took possession at its own 41-yard line following another short kickoff. Two straight running plays produced first downs and then Monteith found Mcray Weber wide open for a 37-yard touchdown pass. The run failed, but the Ryan lead was cut to 24-14 with 3:36 left in the half.

The Cowboys were not through scoring, however – not by a long shot as it turned out.

Ryan took the ball at the Empire 46 after another onside kickoff attempt and promptly drove 46 yards on seven plays for a touchdown. Grayson Tomberlin ran up the middle from the one-yard line for the score and then passed to Weldon for the two points to give Ryan a 32-14 advantage with just 16 seconds before the break.

As the third quarter got under way it looked like Ryan would take command as they drove 47 yards in four plays for a score. Parkhill got his third rushing touchdown of the night as he scampered 16 yards for the score. Parkhill ran for the two-point conversion and Ryan held a 40-14 lead with 10:33 left in the third quarter.

Empire, however, answered with a seven-play, 53-yard drive with much of the work being done by Booth. He got the score on a three-yard run and Booth also ran for the two points to cut the Ryan lead to 40-22 with 8:10 left in the third quarter.

The two squads then exchanged fumbles. Weldon raced to recover the snap over the quarterback’s head and this gave Ryan another short field at the Empire 33 yard line.

On the first play, Parkhill raced 33 yards for the score and then Tomberlin found Fristoe on a two-point pass completion to put Ryan in front, 48-22, with 7:37 left in the third quarter.

Once again Empire proved its ability to score as they took the ensuing kickoff from the Empire 33 to the Ryan 41 in four plays. On third-and-six, Monteith found Lucas Contreras on a 41-yard touchdown pass and Daniel Alvarez caught a two-point conversion pass from Montheith to narrow the gap to 48-30 with 5:56 left to play.

That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get the rest of the night.

On Ryan’s next drive facing fourth and six at its own 49-yard line, the Cowboys pulled off a fake punt by snapping the ball to Parkhill and he broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run. Fristoe ran for the two points and with 3:48 left in the third quarter, the Cowboys held a 56-30 advantage.

The Cowboys really put any hopes of an Empire rally to rest on the Bulldogs’ next drive.

Fristoe picked off an errant Bulldog pass in the middle of the field and quickly broke into open field on the left side and went 60 yards for a touchdown. The run failed, but now Ryan led, 62-30, with 2:32 left to play in the third quarter.

The Cowboys finally another stop on Empire’s next drive and took the ball over on downs at the Ryan 39.

In three plays, the Cowboys were on the scoreboard again. Justin Williams took a short pass from Tomberlin and took off on a 66-yard touchdown pass with 11:53 left in the game. Weldon caught a two-point conversion from Tomberlin to give Ryan a 70-30 lead.

Empire did not quit and on the ensuing drive traveled 62 yards on just two plays. Alvarez was on the receiving end of a 33-yard pass by Monteith for the score. Brandon Mendenall caught a conversion pass from Monteith and with 11:41 left to play, Ryan was in front, 70-38.

After holding the Bulldogs on the next drive, the Cowboys took over on downs at the Empire 25.

It took only two plays with Parkhill carrying the ball to the 10 on first down and then scoring on the next play. Tomberlin ran for the two-point conversion and the Cowboys were comfortably in front, 78-38, with 10:07 left in the game.

Empire put together the longest drive of the night moving from its own seven yard line to the Ryan 10 in 12 plays and helped along by a 15-yard penalty on the Cowboys.

On second down and goal from the 10, Monteith did not see Parkhill and the Cowboy senior picked the ball off at the one and went from the left side to the middle of the field and finally down the right sideline making a nifty move on the last Bulldog defender to prevent the score and danced into the end zone for a 99-yard touchdown return.

That put the Cowboys in front, 84-38, and with 4:48 left in the game the contest ended on the mercy rule.

Parkhill had a career night with 238 yards rushing and six rushing touchdowns. He also recorded nine tackles and had the game-ending interception.

Weldon had a good night on defense with five tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Walter Snider, Fristoe and Tomberlin led the Cowboys in tackles with 13 stops each.

COWBOY CORRAL: Ryan now leads the series with Empire, 4-1, but this was the first meeting of eight-man teams….The 84 points scored is the third most in school history behind 97 scored against Devol in 1924 and 92 points scored against Comanche in 1922…The 84 points is the most ever scored by Ryan on the field where the Cowboys currently play breaking the previous high of 80 scored against Pernell in 1985….Parkhill’s interception return is now the longest in school history and broke the record of 94 yards set just last year by Dawson Tomberlin against Bray-Doyle….Because both teams used the onside or short kickoff most of the game much of the contest was played near midfield…Empire’s worst starting field position was its own seven-yard line, but only three drives out of 13 possessions started inside the Bulldog 30-yard line….Ryan had 10 possessions in the game and only three of those started inside the Ryan 40….Parkhill’s 238 yards rushing is the career high for the Cowboy senior and ranks as the 22nd best rushing total in school history….The six rushing touchdowns scored by Parkhill is the second most in school history behind the nine rushing touchdowns by Grant Carter in a 2015 game against Cement….Parkhill scored 48 total points in the contest and that is the second most in school history moving ahead of Nelson Turnbow’s 42 points scored in a 1940 game against Noble, but behind Carter’s total of 54 scored against Cement….Counting return yards and receiving yards, Parkhill finished the game with 351 all-purpose yards….The combined number of points scored – 122 – is the second most in school history behind the 138 points scoring in a 78-60 loss at Grandfield in 1997….The 84 points scored in this game is the fourth most in any game in Oklahoma this season behind Graham-Dustin’s 94 points in Zero Week and Tyrone’s 86 in Week 3 and Destiny Christian’s 86 points in Week 5.

Cowboys Snap Losing Streak With Victory Over Thackerville

While the Ryan Cowboys snapped a long losing streak last Thursday against Thackerville, it was still a difficult weekend for the Ryan squads.

Last Thursday, Thackerville edged the Cowgirls, 36-33, while the Cowboys scored a 42-39 victory over the Wildcats on Raymon West Court to end a six-game skid.

Ryan traveled to Healdton last Friday and fell in both contests. The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of poor shooting by the Cowgirls to gain a 43-26 verdict.

Healdton, 18-2 on the year and ranked 18th in Class 2A, rolled to a 48-13 victory over the Cowboys.

Against Healdton, the Cowgirls got off to a tough start falling behind the Lady Bulldogs, 9-1, after one quarter.

All of Healdton’s first-quarter points came on three converted long range field goals.

The Cowgirls battled the Lady Bulldogs on even terms in the second quarter and were competitive most of the rest of the game trailing by 15 points with just three minutes to play.

Ultimately it was the first quarter deficit that was too much to overcome.

Lily York led the Cowgirls in scoring with 10 points.

Coach Steve Spangler’s Cowgirls are still playing without one starter.

The Cowgirls have lost nine straight to the Lady Bulldogs dating back to the 1993 season.

The Cowboys were short-handed also as two starters were missing against Healdton with illness.

Healdton got off to an impressive start and took a 14-3 lead after the first quarter.

The Bulldogs struggled, however, in the second quarter, but the Cowboys could not trim the margin and trailed 19-5 at the half.

For the second time this season the Cowboys came out of the intermission and could not score a point. The Bulldogs went on a 16-0 run in the period for an insurmountable 35-5 lead heading into the final frame.

The Cowboys broke the scoring drought, but Healdton still managed to outscore Ryan, 13-8, to set the final margin.

The 13 points scored in the game is the second fewest in school history and is the fewest since recording only 15 points in a 1988 encounter with Sulphur.

Dawson Tomberlin was the leading scorer for Coach Judd Matthes’ squad with seven points.

The Cowboys have lost six of the last eight meetings with the Bulldogs dating back to the 1993 season.

In the game with Thackerville, the Cowgirls trailed by a 9-5 count after the first quarter and again it was hot outside shooting by the Lady Wildcats that doomed the Cowgirls.

Thackerville’s nine points came on three treys.

Thackerville was able to increase the margin to 20-15 at the half before the Cowgirls came alive after the halftime break and managed to narrow the score to 26-24 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats sealed the victory by scoring the last seven points from the free throw line. The Cowgirls could not cut into the deficit in the final frame thanks to missing three of five charity tosses.

York finished with 17 points for the Cowgirls and she was responsible for all five of Ryan’s first quarter point total.

Thackerville moved to 15-3 after this win.

The Cowgirls are 25-13 against Thackerville in the last 38 meetings, but have now lost two in a row to the Lady Wildcats.

The Cowboys established a seven-point lead after the first quarter and were able to extend the lead to 20-11 at intermission.

The Wildcats cut into the lead in the third quarter and trailed only 30-24 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys could not shake the Wildcats mainly because of a struggle at the free throw line.

For the entire game, Ryan only converted on 35% of its free throw attempts.

Skyler Parkhill led the Cowboys in scoring with 14 points and he scored five of the Cowboys’ eight first-quarter points and was the only player for the Cowboys to score in every quarter.

It was the fourth win in a row for the Cowboys over the Wildcats.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls were to have met Geronimo last Tuesday on Raymon West Court.

Both squads return to action tonight by traveling to Burneyville to face Turner for a doubleheader.

Tomorrow night will be Senior Night for the Cowgirl and Cowboy basketball teams as they play host to Temple.

Ryan will finish the regular season on Tuesday as they travel to Empire.

The Class A District Tournament will begin on February 9 at Central High

Cowboys Drop Two in Red Dirt Classic

It was a last minute addition to the Ryan baseball schedule and even though the Cowboys picked up some extra games, the results were not favorable.

The Cowboy nine dropped a 19-0 decision to eventual tournament champion Comanche on Thursday and suffered a 10-9 loss to Velma-Alma in last Friday’s game.

The Cowboys are now 1-4 on the year heading into action against Thackerville at the Wildcat diamond on Monday.

The Cowboys will return to Larry Ninman Field on Tuesday at Bob Givens Sports Complex against Turner.

Ryan will end the busy week with a matchup against Comanche on the road next Thursday.

In the first-round game with Comanche, the Cowboys managed only two base runners and no base hits in the three-inning contest.

The Cowboys had two base runners in the first inning on an error and a walk, but could not get the timely hit needed to try and rally after Comanche had scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning.

The Indians added nine more before the game was halted.

In Friday’s game with Velma-Alma, the Comets scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth (and final inning) as the first three Comet batters reached base on two walks and a hit batsman. An error by the Cowboys gave the Comets the go-ahead run.

Velma-Alma got off to a 7-0 lead after two innings before the Cowboys mounted a five-run rally in the top of the third inning.

Pacen Wiest got things started for the Cowboys with a one-out walk and then Dawson Tomberlin singled. A two-out single by Grayson Tomberlin was followed by singles by Tate Kimbro, Gunner Phillips and Andrew Villerreal. Coupled with a Comet error, the Cowboys had scored five runs before the end of the inning to narrow the score to 7-5.

The Cowboys actually took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with four runs that included a three-run triple by Villerreal. A single by River Williams drove in Villerreal to put the Cowboys in front, 9-7, heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Comets responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs to tie the game. V-A gained the lead as two hits and two errors led to two runs leaving the score knotted at 9-9 heading to the final frame.

In the top of the fifth the Cowboys went in order setting up the Comets to score the winning run.

The Cowboys the scored their first win of the year last Tuesday with a victory over Grandfield as previously reported.

The Cowboys fell behind 3-0 after one inning of play against the Bearcats but rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

An error helped Kimbro reach base and then after two were out, the Cowboys were able to put four runs on the board with the benefit of only one hit – a single by Joseph Martin.

Grandfield answered with a run in the top of the third and after Ryan failed to score, the game was tied at the end of three innings, 4-4.

The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as a walk eventually led to a run. It was the only base runner for Grandfield in the inning to give the Bearcats a 5-4 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Cowboys exploded for six runs to essentially put the game away.

G. Tomberlin had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double. Four Bearcat errors and three walks helped contribute to the big inning for the Cowboys.

In the bottom of the sixth Ryan put two more runs on the board without the aid of a base hit.

G. Tomberlin got the win on the mound for the Cowboys and helped his own cause with two hits – both doubles – and two runs batted in.

Cowboy Nine Drops Twinbill to Turner

0

After an extended time off because of scheduling conflicts the Ryan Cowboy baseball squad was back in action Tuesday at Larry Ninman Field.

The Cowboys hosted Turner in a doubleheader and Ryan found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard in both games.

The Falcons defeated the Cowboys, 12-2, in the pair of contests that ended early because of the run rule.

Ryan is slated to be back in action today at Larry Ninman field when the Cowboys play host to Grandfield. The high school game will start around 6 p.m.

Grandfield’s only win this season came in an earlier meeting with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys close out the regular season with a twinbill with Waurika on Monday. The doubleheader will start at 4 p.m. at the Ryan diamond.

The Eagles have two wins over the Cowboys in an earlier meeting.

Following the final two regular season games the Cowboys will travel to Sterling for the Class B District Tournament.

No other details were provided on the pair of losses to Turner.

Lady Eagles Turn In Impressive Performance At State Meet

All through the regular season – including the regional cross country meet – the Waurika girls’ cross country squad has been on the cusp of accomplishing great things.

And, all the hard work and competition of the 2019 season paid off last Saturday at the Class 2A State Cross Country Meet held at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee.

The Lady Eagles, who finished behind Ryan and Merritt at the regional on Waurika’s home course, outdistanced those two teams in the state meet to earn fifth place – the highest finish ever for a Waurika cross country squad at state.

Watonga claimed the team title over Hooker by one point. Watonga finished with 52 points, while the Lady Bulldogs had 53. Cherokee was fourth with 119 points and Boise City was fourth with 134 points. Waurika claimed fifth place with 175 points.

“I was very proud of the high school girls this year,” said long-time cross country coach Joe Masoner. “They started working towards state in June in the weight room.”

The course was a difficult one last Saturday as the recent rains produced a somewhat muddy path for the competitors in the crowded Class 2A field which featured 154 runners.

Asia Smith led the way for the Lady Eagles earning 21st place with a time of 13:43.06 – her second best time of the season. Smith was a late addition to the Lady Eagles’ squad and she really made a difference for the Lady Eagles in the last part of the season.

Tallin Mora finished 34th with a time of 13:52.10 – also her second best time of the season.

Liberti Simmons, just a freshman for the Lady Eagles, earned 35th in her first appearance in the state meet with a time of 13:52.47 – her second best clocking of the season.

Lexie Streeter was 53rd for the Lady Eagles. She turned in a time of 14:08.62.

Rounding out the team scorers for the Lady Eagles was Faith Roberson. She finished 92nd in the race and turned in a season-best time of 15:07.12.

Also representing Waurika at the state competition was Hope Cummings. She finished 132nd with a time of 16:46.04 – also her best time of the season over a 3,200-meter course.

Kaci Reynolds finished not far behind Cummings in 140th place with a time of 17:33.54.

The fifth-place finish for the Lady Eagles was the highest team finish at the state meet in school history.

The Lady Eagles have qualified for the state cross country meet the past three seasons and have improved each year. In 2017, Waurika finished 14th and in 2018 the Lady Eagles were ninth.

Waurika also qualified for state in 2014 and 2013.

“These girls ran hard in practice and in meets,” said Masoner commenting on the 2019 season. “I was hoping for a regional title this year, but they gave themselves a chance.”

“The one thing about this group of ladies is they were determined to do better at state which they did by finishing fifth overall and beating the two teams that beat them at regionals,” added Masoner.

“I am super excited about next year getting everyone back next year except for Sara (Ballard),” noted Masoner. “We will add five girls moving up from the junior high team that will make us better.”

While the boys’ squad failed to qualify for the state meet, they claimed one meet title and performed well against some tough competition throughout the year.

“I am also proud of the boys’ team although we didn’t qualify for state,” said Masoner about the Eagles’ 2019 season. “The boys never seemed to get over the hump where their times started to go down.”

“They worked hard and ran close to each other which needs to be done to score well but only was able to do that in the front half of the pack in a couple of meets,” Masoner noted.

“It hurt not having Bryson (Hernandez) this year since he has been one of the team leaders the previous three years,” said Masoner. “We are losing half our team to graduation, but we will get some help from the junior high team.”

With the accomplishments of both teams this year, the Lady Eagles and Eagles have a lot to look forward to next fall for the 2020 cross country season.

The baseball season is quickly coming to an end for the Waurika Eagles.

The Eagles will enter post-season play today at Central High for the Class A District Tournament.

In the first game Waurika will take on Empire at 3:30 p.m. and no matter the outcome will take on the host school following the first game around 5:30 p.m.

The tournament is double-elimination and two losses by the Eagles in today’s action would end the Waurika nine’s season.

In the final days of the regular season, the Eagles were able to get a pair of wins over Ryan and a victory over Geronimo. The Eagles dropped a contest to Dickson and had last Friday’s contest with Wilson rained out.

Coach Glen Howard’s crew will take a 9-13 record into today’s tournament.

The Eagles picked up their eighth and ninth wins of the season Monday night in a three-way matchup with Ryan and Geronimo at Geronimo.

The Eagles defeated Ryan, 10-2, and then held off Geronimo for a 5-3 victory.

Last Friday’s scheduled game with Wilson was rained out.

In Monday’s action, Waurika took advantage of eight Ryan errors for the victory.

The game was scoreless after two innings, but Waurika erupted for four runs in the top of the third inning.

Bryson Hernandez reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an errant pickoff attempt.

Michael Bryant and Zachary Brown both walked and an RBI-single by Austin Dyer scored Bryant.

The Eagles scored two more runs on another Ryan miscue with Brown and Dyer scoring to give Waurika a 4-0 lead.

Waurika added a run in the top of the fourth when Colton Bryant reached on an infield single and stole second. A ground out by Hernandez pushed across Bryant for a 5-0 Waurika lead.

The Cowboys managed two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Eagles responded with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the win.

Dyer led off the inning with a single and Edwin Garcia was hit by a pitch. Dyer scored as C. Bryant reached on an error and Garcia and C. Bryant scored on another Cowboy fielding error to make the score 8-2.

Hunter Wesberry reached base on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Hernandez followed with a single and Brown got an RBI on a fielder’s choice to close out the Waurika offensive onslaught.

Dyer and Hernandez led the Eagles with two hits apiece.

In the second game Monday, the Eagles got an outstanding pitching performance from Brown and Wesberry recorded a save on the mound for Waurika.

The Eagles scored first in the top of the second inning as Brown reached on a single and stole second. He scored on Gatlin Black’s run-scoring single and the Eagles got another run on a Bluejay error to gain a 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the third inning, the Eagles added another run on somewhat controversial play. Wesberry reached on an error and advanced to second after M. Bryant walked.

Wesberry scored from third after Bryant was hit by a ball trying to advance to third. This gave Waurika a 3-0 lead.

Geronimo finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with a single tally helped along by an Eagle error to cut the lead to 3-1 after three innings.

The Eagles added another run in the fourth inning after the Geronimo center fielder could not make a play on Dyer’s fly ball. An infield single by Seth Waid drove Dyer home giving Waurika a 4-1 lead.

Geronimo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits, two singles and an error to cut the Eagle advantage to 4-3.

Waurika added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning as three consecutive singles the last of which came from M. Bryant that drove in Wesberry for a 5-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth Wesberry came on to retire the Bluejay batters in order to seal the win.

Waid and Wesberry each had two hits to pace the Eagles at the plate.

A week ago Tuesday, the Eagles scored an 8-0 victory over Ryan after dropping a 12-1 decision to Dickson in a three-way contest at the Eagle diamond.

The Comets score three runs in the first, fourth more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second.

The Eagles managed a run in the bottom of the second as Brown got an infield single and moved to second on Dyer’s single. Watkins reached on an error and Payton Fletcher then got an RBI-infield single to give Waurika the only run of the game.

Dickson added five more runs in the top of the fourth inning and the game ended by the run rule after the Eagles could not score in the bottom of the inning.

Dyer took the loss on the mound for the Eagles.

In the second game for Waurika, the Eagles jumped out on top of Ryan after the first inning with a three-run uprising.

Wesberry singled and scored on Brown’s RBI-single. Brown advanced on a stolen base and some defensive indifference by the Cowboys sent him to third. Dyer picked up a walk and Watkins’ base hit got a two-RBI single for the Eagles.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to add to the lead. C. Bryant led off the inning with a walk and Hernandez singled. C. Bryant scored on Wesberry’s ground out.

Black reached on an error that enabled Hernandez to cross the plate and make the score 5-0 after two innings.

In the third inning the Eagles got another run as Watkins singled and stole second and third. Watkins scored on a passed ball putting Waurika ahead, 6-0, after three innings.

The game ended in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles scored two more runs with M. Bryant scoring on a wild pitch and reaching on a base hit and Wesberry scoring after reaching on an error.

Watkins’ two hits paced the Eagles at the plate, while Brown tossed a one-hitter to get the win on the mound.

Various Factors Hamper The Start of Spring Sports for Cowboys, Eagles

Scouting the Jefferson County sports scene while wondering if March Madness is really about tracking spring sports or about NCAA basketball!

Between weather, playing conditions and a bevy of extra-curricular activities that keep students busy in the spring, some spring sports have had trouble getting under way.

Such is the case for slow-pitch softball and baseball at Ryan High School.

The Cowboy nine was scheduled to take the field for the season-opener last Thursday, but playing conditions on Larry Ninman Field were not up to par after recent rains and the game with Temple was postponed.

The Cowboys were scheduled to begin the season at Turner today with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Now the home opener is slated for Monday as the Cowboys will play host to Comanche and will wrap up the pre-spring break part of the schedule next Tuesday by traveling to Grandfield.

For the Cowgirl slow-pitch softball team, the season was scheduled to begin last Monday against Lawton Christian, but because a number of the players were attending the State Beta Club convention in Oklahoma City, the game was canceled.

The Cowgirls were to open the season last Tuesday by hosting Grandfield in a Southern Eight conference clash and those results will appear in next week’s paper.

The first road game for the Cowgirls will be next Tuesday when they will travel to Temple. The softballers will wrap up the pre-spring break part of their schedule on March 15 when they will host Big Pasture.

Waurika was able to get its baseball season started but had its first two contests rained out.

The Eagles opened the season with a 16-8 loss to Frederick on the Bombers’ home diamond and then had another game postponed before dropping a twinbill at Central High, 16-4 and 7-6.

Waurika faced Empire Monday in its home opener for the 2018 season, but dropped a 5-1 decision to the Bulldogs.

The Eagle nine was to have begun play today in the Southwest Donkey Invitational at Bray-Doyle. Waurika was to have met Wynnewood in the first round.

The tournament forced a postponement of Friday’s scheduled contest between Ryan and Waurika that was on tap to be played at Ryan.

The Eagles will return to the diamond on Monday at Dickson and then return home to face Grandfield one week from today before taking time off for spring break.

As always check social media or with your local school to stay up with any last-minute changes in the schedule for baseball, slow-pitch softball, track and golf at the two Jefferson County schools.
