Roberson Wins State Title, Waurika Places at State

0

Roberson becomes first girl thinclad to win a state title in the shot put.

Madison Roberson added to the rich heritage of Waurika track and field by claiming the state title in the shot put at last weekend’s Class A State Track Meet held at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.

Roberson is the first girl to win a state title in the shot put for Waurika and only the second girl to win a title in a field event.

The multi-sport athlete for the Lady Eagles is only the second Waurika athlete to win a title in the shot put. The only other person to win a title in the event is the late Bob Bodenhamer who claimed a title in 1945 – the second year a state track meet was conducted.

Her title-winning toss was 35-2.5 and oddly enough was only her fifth best mark of the 2019 season. Her best toss was 38-3 at a meet in Wynnewood a few weeks ago.

Roberson competed in the shot put last Saturday after having placed sixth in the discus on Friday before the rest of the meet was delayed until Saturday because of rain.

Roberson’s throw in the discus was 104-6 and was her second best throw of the season for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles finished tied for 14th among the Class A schools in the annual track and field championships. The Lady Eagles racked up 16 points and finished in a tie with Empire, Weleetka and Davenport.

Boise City-Keyes won the meet with 125 points, while Thomas finished second with 75. Oil Field Conference member Velma-Alma finished third at the state meet with 68 points.

This year’s meet featured a new scoring format and it meant 54 different schools scored points. Points were earned by individuals and relays from places one to eight. The top six places earned medals.

The Lady Eagles had only one other competitor place at the state track meet. Asia Smith finished sixth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:45.37.

Smith’s time at the state meet was her best time of the season and was 15 seconds better than her second best time posted at the regional meet the week before. She sliced over a minute off her time posted at the first meet of the season.

Lexie Streeter competed in the 3,200 meters but managed only to finish 11th among the 16 individuals in the event. However, her time of 13:41.20 was her best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Smith, Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora also competed at state and just missed scoring by finishing ninth with a time of 11:06.32 – the team’s second best time of the season.

The Waurika boys finished in a tie for 14th in the team race at the state meet. The Eagles accumulated 18 points and finished tied with Cyril.

Thomas won the state team title with 120 points, while Boise City-Keyes finished well behind with 58 points. Southern Eight Conference rival Grandfield finished just ahead of the Eagles with 20 points.

Leading the way for the Eagles was a fifth-place finish by Turner Mora in the 400 meters. His time of 52.68 was his best time of the season. Like Streeter, Tu. Mora improved throughout the season in the event.

The other individual that scored for the Eagles was senior Aaron Nitka. He finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 122-6, which was his second best throw of the season behind his performance of 128-3 at the regional track meet.

Waurika had three relay teams that competed in the meet, but only two of the teams placed.

The 800 meter relay team of Tucker Mora, Colton Bryant, Nick Alvarado and Kevin Garcia put together a sixth place finish with a time of 1:37.38. The time was the fifth best of the season for the Eagles.

The 1600 meter relay team also finished sixth and recorded a time of 3:35.13 – the best time of the season. Garcia, Tu. Mora, Bryant and Cache Arellano represented the Eagles on the team.

The 3,200 meter relay team finished 10th in a tough field. Arellano, Bryson Hernandez, Gustavo Gomez and Octavio Gomez recorded a time of 9:05.85 and it was their best time of the year.

Nitka and Alvarado also competed in events at the state meet, but did not place. Nitka’s toss of 39-7.5 in the shot put was his second best mark of the season. Alvarado’s time in the 200 meters was 24.62 and it was his second best time of the season.

Waurika and Ryan Thinclads Have Good Day at Waurika Meet

The weather for last Saturday’s Red River Invitational Track Meet hosted by Waurika was some of the best of the season and the results for both Ryan and Waurika reflected the better conditions.

Waurika girls finished second in the meet with 100 points behind Atoka’s 122 points.

Ryan’s girls finished fourth with 68 points well behind third-place Frederick that finished with 96 points.

Walters took the team title in the boys’ division with a dominating performance. The Blue Devils racked up 187 points outdistancing Riverside Indian School that finished with 148 points.

Waurika finished third in the team standings with 91 points and Ryan finished eighth in the 14-team meet with 33 points.

One of the highlights of the meet came in the 3,200 meter relay where Ryan and Waurika continued to battle for supremacy in the event as they have throughout this season.

This time, it was the Ryan Cowgirl squad of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter that took first-place honors with a time of 10:52.01. The time is a new school record for Ryan in the event.

Waurika managed second place in the event with a time of 10:58.70. Asia Smith, Lexie Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora ran for the Lady Eagles in the event. It was easily the best time of the season turned in by this squad.

Waurika had three other relay teams to place in the meet – the primary factor for the Lady Eagles to earn runner up team honors.

The 800 meter relay team of Kaci Reynolds, Savana Ritter, Hope Cummings and Sara Ballard finished sixth with a time of 2:09.57.

That time was two seconds behind Ryan’s team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter who turned in a time of 2:07.28 to take fifth place.

The 400 meter relay team of Dallas Fristoe, Ritter, Reynolds and Ballard ran fifth for the Lady Eagles and turned in a time of 59.54.

In the 1,600 meter relay the Cowgirls and Lady Eagles battled again, but this time Frederick posted the winning time with the Cowgirl team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter finishing second with a time of 4:53.03 which is a new school mark.

The Lady Eagles finished fifth with the team of Smith, Streeter, F. Roberson and Mora posting a time of 5:10.28.

In the individual events, Madison Roberson had an outstanding day for the Lady Eagles as she earned two gold medals in the shot put and discus. Her shot put mark was 37-2, while the toss of the discus was 106-5.

Mora also won a gold medal for the Lady Eagles in the long jump with a leap of 16-2. Ballard earned a bronze medal with a jump of 15-0.

The other gold medal winner for the Lady Eagles was Smith in the 1,600 meters. She posted a time of 6:22.02 and Streeter was not far behind earning third place with a time of 6:28.37.

In the 800 meters, Smith finished fifth with a time of 2:46.71. Mora was sixth with a mark of 2:49.36 and F. Roberson finished eighth with a time of 3:11.99.

Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles as she finished seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 13.86.

The Cowgirls did not have any titlist in the individual events, but Spangler did earn a silver medal in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:14.33.

Harmon and Carter both placed for the Cowgirls in the 800 meters. Harmon was third with a timeof 2:44.04 and Carter was just behind in fourth place with a time of 2:44.87.

Spangler finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:39.24.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls was Katlyn Dabbs in the 300 meter hurdles with an eighth place finish. She recorded a time of 62.69. She is the first Cowgirl to score points in this event since the 1997 Southern Eight Conference track event.

The Eagles had another impressive day in the relay races. Waurika placed in every relay and won the 1,600 meter relay.

The team of Kevin Garcia, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano turned in a time of 3:42.98 to earn the gold medal just four-hundredths of a second behind the best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Arellano, Bryant, Garcia and Bryson Hernandez finished second with a time of 9:18.58. It was Waurika’s best time in the event this season.

The 400 meter relay team of Garcia, Tu. Mora, Nic Alvarado and Bryant was third with a time of 59.54.

The same quartet also took third in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:36.81. This was the best time of the season for the Eagles in this event.

Tu. Mora also won a gold medal in the 400 meters with his time of 53.62. He was the only gold medal winner for the Eagles on the day.

In the discus, Aaron Nitka finished fourth with a toss of 113-10, while Alvarado managed to finished fifth in the 100 meters with 11.5. Hernandez rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a seventh place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:32.44.

The Cowboys did not have any teams entered in the relays during the meet, but did have several outstanding marks in some of the individual events.

Walker Rawlings topped the performers for the Cowboys in the meet with two gold medals. He was first in the shot put with a toss of 41-10 and also first in the discus with a throw of 125-10.

Travis Fristoe had some impressive performances for the Cowboys. His mark of 19-3 in the long jump earned him fifth place and is the best mark in that event by a Ryan athlete since the 1985 Healdton invitational when Justin Savage posted a 20-6 jump.

Fristoe was also fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.25.

The Cowboy senior was also fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.86, while Landen Alexander also scored in the event for the Cowboys by finishing eighth with a time of 66.92.

Empire Uses Big Second Half to Gain Big Victory over Ryan

0

Empire scored 40 unanswered points last Friday night against the Ryan Cowboys to record a 58-8 District B-4 victory on the Bulldogs’ home field.

The Cowboys trailed only 18-8 heading into the intermission, but the Bulldogs struck for some long-distance scoring runs in the second half to doom the Cowboys.

Ryan is now 3-3 on the year (including the forfeit from Temple) and is 0-1 in district play. The Cowboys will try to rebound from the big loss by taking on Waurika tonight (Thursday) at Bob Givens Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Cowboys who are still battling injuries and inexperience stayed with the Bulldogs throughout the first half, but Ryan struggled offensively to move the ball with any consistency throughout the contest.

Midway through the first quarter the Cowboys’ Grayson Tomberlin launched a 52-yard punt to put Empire on the move at the Bulldog 29. It took only five plays for the Bulldogs to drive for the initial score of the night.

The drive ended with a 51-yard scamper by Empire quarterback Mitchell Monteith. The Cowboys stopped the two-point conversion, but Empire was on top, 6-0, with 4:31 to play in the first quarter.

Late in the first quarter the Bulldogs took over after an unsuccessful fake punt the by the Cowboys inside Ryan territory at the 45 yard line.

The Cowboy defense stiffened but the Bulldogs kept plugging away even though it took Empire 12 plays to cover the 55 yards. Peyton Booth scored from four yards out after reversing the field to find an opening. The try for two failed, but Empire now owned a 12-0 lead with 9:49 left in the second quarter.

Ryan picked up only its second first down of the game on the next drive, but the Cowboy offense stalled at the Empire 39 and turned the ball over on downs.

After an incomplete pass, Booth took a pitch and raced 61 yards for the touchdown. The try for two failed, but Empire now held an 18-0 advantage with 4:47 left in the first half.

The Cowboys answered with their only scoring drive of the night. Ryan took the ball from its own 34 and in 13 plays picked up the score. Tomberlin found Andrew Villerreal wide open on the left side and Villerreal took the pass and waltzed into the end zone for the touchdown. Villerreal ran for the two-point conversion and the lead had been trimmed to 18-8 with just 41 seconds before halftime.

The Bulldogs scored on their first three possessions of the second half with the third scored coming with 11:14 left in the game that gave Empire a 40-8 lead.

The Cowboys continued to struggle offensively and Empire took advantage of a Ryan fumble midway through the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs took possession at the Ryan 39 yard-line and on the first play Booth went the distance to increase the lead to 46-8 with 6:22 left in the game.

The Cowboys failed to convert a fourth down on the next possession and handed the Bulldogs the ball at the Ryan 43. It took Empire just four plays with Booth carrying the ball three times including a 33-yard run. The third rushing play resulted in a six-yard run for the touchdown by Booth and with 4:13 left the Bulldogs were in front, 52-8.

On the next possession the Cowboys’ drive ended with an interception and Empire took over at the Bulldog 35 yard line with just 1:57 remaining in the game. Two plays netted eight yards and instead of running out the clock, the Bulldogs’ Monteith took the ball and broke into the Ryan secondary for a 57-yard scoring run that ended the game on the mercy rule with only 41 seconds left in the game.

COWBOY CORRAL: These two schools have met on the gridiron only six times since Empire started football in the 1974 season….The Bulldogs and Cowboys played four times before Ryan dropped to eight-man football….Ryan still leads the short series, 4-2….The 50-point margin of victory is the largest of the six-game series breaking the old mark of 46 points set in the 1977 game won by Empire, 64-18….The 58 points is the second most points scored by Empire in the series….Ryan tied for the fewest points in a game against Empire…The Cowboys scored only scored eight points in a 1976 win over the Bulldogs, 8-6….The 490 yards rushing by the Bulldogs is the fourth most by an opponent in school history…The other three totals are 684 against Grandfield in 1997, 535 against Grandfield in 2001 and 496 against Ringling in a 1947 contest….Ryan dominated the time of possession with a seven-minute advantage, but Empire scored twice on short, one-play drives….Ryan went one of seven on fourth-down tries, while Empire was four of six in fourth-down conversions.

Waurika Pulls Away From Wilson Late For First District Win

0

It was a struggle, but the Waurika Eagles flew past Wilson in the second half and scored a 62-34 victory at Cy Sloan Stadium last Friday night.

It was a tight game at the halftime break as Waurika led, 28-20, but after Wilson tied the game early in the third quarter, Waurika came alive with four scores to put the game away.

The Eagles travel down U.S. 81 Friday night to take on the Ryan Cowboys in a District B-4 matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Wilson got on the board first after a Waurika interception gave Wilson the ball at their own six. On the third play from the Waurika three, Logan Schaaf’s pass was tipped and landed in the hands of Shane Honea who raced to the end zone for a 97-yard touchdown pass. Schaaf found Caylen Fulton for the two-point conversion giving Wilson an 8-0 lead with 7:12 to play in the first quarter.

Waurika answered on their next possession with a 63-yard drive on six plays. The big play of the drive was a 45-yard scamper by Kevin Garcia to the Wilson 15. Four plays later Garcia scored from one yard out and the lead was trimmed to 8-6 with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter.

Honea fielded the ensuing kickoff and raced 82 yards for the score. The two-point conversion failed, but the Carter County Eagles had increased the lead to 14-6 with 5:01 left in the first quarter.

Waurika came back to tie the score on a seven-play, 55-yard drive. Turner Mora picked up the touchdown was a 22-yard run. Trent Arellano picked up the two-point conversion on a tough run around the left side to knot the score at 14 with 2:35 remaining in the first period.

Wilson began another scoring drive that carried into the second quarter. Schaff capped the drive with a one-yard plunge giving the lead back to Wilson at 20-14 with 10:26 left before the half.

Waurika had another answer, however, as they drove from their own 43. Mora found Hunter Wesberry wide open in the end zone and connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass to put draw Waurika even with Wilson at 20-20 with 8:45 left before the half.

After turning back another Wilson drive, Waurika took possession at the Waurika 25. Working against the clock Waurika marched down the field and competed the scoring drive when Mora hit Payton Fletcher with a touchdown pass over the middle. Mora ran for the two points and with just 16 ticks showing on the clock Waurika had gained the lead for the first time.

The two teams exchanged turnovers to open the third quarter and after Waurika recovered the Wilson fumble, Garcia scored from two yards out. After Mora ran for the two points, Waurika upped the lead to 36-20 with 10:12 to play in the third quarter.

Wilson refused to die as they took the ensuing kickoff and drove 63 yards on just two plays. The big play was a 54-yard pass from Schaaf to Honea score the touchdown. Schaaf ran for the two-point conversion to narrow the gap to 36-28 with 8:12 left in the third period.

This is the point in the game Waurika took control. Mora had two-long distance scoring runs – a 40-yarder the completed a 63-yard drive and a 74-yard scamper that capped a 97-yard drive. The scores extended the lead for Waurika to 48-28.

Garcia got the next score for Waurika with a five-yard run with 11:22 left in the game giving Waurika a comfortable 54-28 advantage.

Waurika scored again after a Wilson punt and this time a 52-yard drive in three plays ended when Garcia caught a 12-yard pass from Mora for the touchdown. Mora ran for the two-point conversion and Waurika was in front, 62-28, with 8:28 left in the game.

Wilson got its final score of the night on a 50-yard drive that ended when Honea caught a 27-yard scoring pass from Schaaf. The try for two was batted down by Jordan Watkins to set the final margin.

Waurika rolled up 611 yards of total offense with Mora picking up over half of that on the ground. The talented senior quarterback finished with 27 carries for 319 yards. Garcia also topped the 100-yard mark with 137 yards on just 13 carries.

The Waurika defense was impressive against the run as Wilson picked up only 104 yards on 33 totes, but Wilson struck for 254 yards in the air.

EAGLE FLIGHTS: Waurika now leads this series, 52-20-3, with the first game being played in 1921….The 96 points scored by both teams is the most points by the two teams in a game in the series….The 62 points scored by Waurika is the most ever scored against Wilson….Wilson’s 34 points ties for the fourth most points scored against Waurika which was also done in 1956….The 34 points scored by Wilson is also the most points scored in a loss in this series….Mora moved over the 1,000-yard mark in rushing yards in this game as he now has 1,067 yards rushing….This was the third game of the season that Mora rushed for more than 200 yards.

Ringling Brings State Grid Title Back to Jefferson County

0

The Ringling Blue Devils closed out the 2019 football season like every team dreams – by winning a state championship last Saturday in the Class A finals.

Ringling built a 20-7 lead and then held off Cashion for the 20-14 victory over the Wildcats and earn a fifth state championship in football for the Blue Devils.

Cashion was the top-ranked Class A team at the end of the regular season and Ringling was the number two squad.

The contest, played at the University of Central Oklahoma campus in Edmond, was pretty even but ultimately the Blue Devil defense was able to hold off Cashion.

Ringling rallied from a season-opening 22-20 loss to Mangum by winning 13 straight games en route to the title.

In those 13 wins, opponents failed to score against the Blue Devil defense nine times.

Second-year coach Phil Koons guided the Blue Devils to their first state title since 2012.

DEVIL DABBLINGS: The Blue Devils made their 43rd appearance in post-season play and Ringling holds an 81-38 record in all playoff games… .The Blue Devils first made an appearance in the playoffs in 1961…Currently the Blue Devils have made the playoffs every year this century…Ringling has appeared in the playoffs for 21 straight seasons…..The Blue Devils’ march to the state title was an unusual one in that the Blue Devils had not met any of the opponents in previous playoff games until the game with Cashion….Ringling is now 2-2 in playoff games against Cashion…Ringling, which won two home playoff games this season, is now 49-15 in home games in the playoffs….Ringling holds a 19-15 mark in road wins in the playoffs including this season’s 28-12 victory at Pawhuska….Ringling is 13-8 in playoff games played at neutral sites….Ringling has played for the state championship 11 times and have won five gold balls….Ringling has shutout 23 opponents in post-season play and two of those shutouts came this year against Watonga and Frederick….Ryan head football coach and principal, Tony Tomberlin, is a Ringling graduate….The Blue Devils have had 13 seasons since 1960 in which they lost only one game or less in a season….Ringling is an astounding 11-2 in semifinal games in the playoffs….Ringling has failed to advance to the second round only 12 times in 43 post-season appearances….The other state championship Blue Devil squads came in 2003, 1992 and 1989.

Proposed Football Districts For 2020 and 2021 Released

0

Every two years the football schools in Oklahoma are regrouped into districts.

New enrollment figures place Waurika around the middle of Class B and Ryan will move to Class C for football for the next two seasons.

In early January the districts will be finalized by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.

The Oklahoma Football Coaches Association makes recommendations to the OSSAA and those recommendations have been released.

Class B is divided into eight six-team districts, while Class C is made up of four eight-team districts.

It is recommended that Waurika be assigned to District B-3.

Two of Waurika’s district foes from the past two years are part of the recommendations. Central High and Empire will probably join the Eagles in the new district.

Joining the three schools will more than likely be Cyril, Snyder and Tipton. Tipton, who has dominated play in Class C the past four years, has moved into Class B for the next two years.

Bray-Doyle, one of Waurika’s district foes this past season has been recommended for District B-4, while Velma-Alma will begin district play in District B-4 along with Alex, Caddo, Strother and Southwest Covenant.

The Eagles will have five non-district games on the 2020 schedule which will be finalized soon after the district recommendations have been approved.

Ryan has been placed in District C-2 by the coaches’ association. All the other teams in the district have been in Class C the past two years.

None of the teams recommended for placement in District C-2 will be totally unfamiliar to the Cowboys.

The district will likely include Temple and Grandfield – both long-time rivals of Ryan.

Also recommended to be in the district are Fox, Maysville, Mountain View-Gotebo, Paoli and Thackerville.

All of those schools have been on the Cowboys’ schedule but it has been 10 years since the Cowboys have faced Fox and Paoli in the regular season.

The districts are to be finalized at a meeting on January 15.
