Cowgirls Set to Enter District Tourney After Fletcher Tournament

The Ryan Cowgirl slow-pitch softball squad will take a 4-6 mark into today’s Class 2A District Tournament at Central High.

 The Cowgirls will compete in the district tourney with the host school, Snyder and Geronimo. Central High is the top seed in the tournament, but the Lady Bronchos have lost three of six games in the past few days.

 The Lady Bronchos still have a 23-4 record – including games played through Monday – heading into the district tournament. That is 17 more games than Ryan has played.

 Geronimo and Snyder sport similar records to the Cowgirls, but have also played nearly double the number of contests as Ryan.

 Action was to have gotten underway today at 11 a.m. with the Cowgirls taking on Central High followed by the Geronimo-Snyder contest.

 The tournament is double-elimination, but is slated to be completed today. The winner of the tournament will advance to the regional tourney.

 The regular season was difficult for the Cowgirls in more than just wins and losses.

 Three of the scheduled games with opponents were cancelled because they could not field a team.

 Two other scheduled games were postponed because of weather issues.

 Last week the Cowgirls competed with 13 other teams in the Fletcher Invitational Tournament and played nearly as many games as they had in the entire regular season.

 In the tournament’s opening contest with Verden, the Cowgirls fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could never get the big hit needed to spark a rally. The Cowgirls left 11 runners stranded.

 Justyce Keith scored the only Cowgirl run in the bottom of the fourth inning in the 3-1 loss.

 In the next round, the Cowgirl bats came alive early against Lawton Christian School. The Cowgirls scored three in the bottom of the first inning after LCS had put two runs on the board in the top of the inning.

 The Cowgirls got on top in the second inning with a four-run uprising to hold a 7-2 lead.

 The Lady Crusaders tried to rally in the fourth and fifth innings by scoring one run in each inning, but were retired in order in the top of the sixth to give the Cowgirls a 7-4 victory.

 The win set up another match with Verden.

 Verden took the lead in the top of the second with a run, but the Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the inning with runs by Abbie Bolin and Brooke Charmasson.

 The Cowgirls gave up two runs in the top of the fourth to the Lady Tigers giving Verden a 3-2 advantage.

 Ryan mounted a rally in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs and leaving two Cowgirls stranded on the bases to secure a 6-3 lead.

 Verden added a run in the top of the fifth after two were out, but the Cowgirls retired the final batter before the rally could continue and picked up a 6-4 victory.

 The Cowgirls were eliminated by Chickasha last Friday, 9-3, as the Lady Chicks picked up their first victory of the season.

 Chickasha scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning with four tallies. The Cowgirls escaped further damage by getting the third out with the bases loaded.

 In the bottom of the second, the Lady Chicks added to the lead with four more runs to give the Cowgirls an 8-0 deficit.

 The Cowgirls struck for two runs in the top of the third inning with Kenzie Lewis and Samantha Good getting base hits and eventually scoring to cut the margin to 8-2.

 Chickasha added another run in the bottom of the fourth and the Cowgirls tried to rally in the top of the fifth, but could come up with only a single run.

Lady Eagles Compete In John Jacobs Invitational at OU

In a field that mostly consisted of Class 6A and Class 5A schools, the Waurika Lady Eagles competed in the John Jacobs Invitational at the University of Oklahoma last Friday.

 The Lady Eagles and the Waurika boys’ thinclads were slated to run at Velma-Alma on Tuesday, but results were not available by press time.

The squads were to have competed in their invitational meet last Saturday, but the meet was cancelled by inclement weather.

On Saturday, the Waurika track squads will compete at Alex in the Class A Regional Track Meet.

Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., while the running events are slated to begin with the 400-meter relay preliminaries at 9:45 a.m.

The participants at the regional meet will be competing for the opportunity to represent their school at the Class A State Track Meet at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City on May 4-5.

In the meet at OU, Madison Roberson was the only Lady Eagle to place.

Roberson was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 35-4.75.

That gave Waurika two points and put them in 26th place among the 27 teams competing. Waurika was the only Class A team in the meet.

Two freshmen, Asia Smith and Lexie Streeter, competed in the 3,200 meters for the Lady Eagles. Smith was 16th with a time of 13:09.14, while Streeter was 18th with a time of 13:21.09. Both marks were the best of the season.

Smith and Streeter also competed in the 1,600 meters. Smith was 25th with a time of 6:09.41, while Streeter was right behind with a time of 6:11.21 to finish 26th. Those times were also personal best for the two Lady Eagles in 2018.

Cowgirl Softball Squad Picks Up Pair of Victories

 It has been a busy few days for the Ryan Cowgirl slow-pitch softball squad after the team has struggled to get on the diamond because of weather and cancellations.

 The Cowgirls went 2-3 in the stretch of games with two wins over Big Pasture and losses to Thackerville, Geronimo and Grandfield.

 In the first game with Big Pasture, the Cowgirls captured a 4-0 victory over the Lady Rangers.

 Two singles by Justyce Keith and Brooklyn Charmasson helped the Cowgirls score two runs in the top of the second.

 Cassy Charmasson reached base in the top of the third and came around to score after a base hit by Samantha Good gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 advantage.

 In the top of the fourth, the Cowgirls added to the lead as Randi Linton and came around to score to put the Cowgirls up, 4-0.

 B. Charmasson picked up the shut out win for the Cowgirls and survived seven stranded base runners by the Lady Rangers.

 Later the same day the Cowgirls dropped a 14-2 decision to Thackerville as the Lady Wildcats scored five runs in the first inning and six more in the second inning.

 Thackerville added to the lead in the top of the third with three more runs for a 14-0 lead.

 The Cowgirls were able to scratch for two runs in the bottom of the third, but the game ended on the run-rule.

 Sadie Guzman led off the bottom of the third with a walk and scored, while C. Charmasson also walked and scored. The Cowgirls threatened for more runs to try to keep the game alive, but left the bases loaded.

 The Cowgirls took on Geronimo and Big Pasture a week ago Tuesday split the two contests.

 Geronimo blasted the Cowgirls for six runs in the first inning and coasted to an 11-1 victory over Ryan in just four innings.

 Keith accounted for the Cowgirls’ lone run in the game.

 The Cowgirls rebounded from the loss to pick up a 6-3 victory over Big Pasture.

 The Lady Rangers took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but the Cowgirls picked up three tallies in the top of the third to take the lead.

 Madison Rhodes, Kenzie Lewis and Linton all reached base for the Cowgirls and scored. The Cowgirls also stranded two runs in the inning.

 The Cowgirls added to the lead in the top of the sixth as Lewis, Good and Guzman each circled the bases for Ryan giving the Cowgirls a 6-1 lead.

 Big Pasture managed two runs in the bottom of the inning as seven batters came to the plate, but the Cowgirls ended the rally.

 Last Thursday the Cowgirls got into a slugfest with Grandfield and dropped a 21-10 decision.

 Ryan jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Lewis and Linton reached base and scored. Abbie Bolin added a basehit, but the Cowgirls could not do any more damage.

 Grandfield answered in the bottom of the inning as the first four batters came around to score and the Lady Bearcats added another run for a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

 The Cowgirls actually regained the lead in the top of the second inning as they exploded for eight runs.

 Eleven Cowgirls came to the plate in the inning and the first eight batters scored. Keith, C. Charmasson, Rhodes, Savannah Lashley, Keith, Linton, Good and Guzman all scored in the inning to give Ryan a 10-5 lead.

 The Bearcats responded, however, with 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 17-10 lead.

 The Cowgirls could get nothing started in the third inning, while the Lady Bearcats added four more runs for a 21-10 lead heading to the top of the fourth inning.

 The Cowgirls tried to extend the game, but left the bases loaded and the game ended on the run rule.

 Ryan is now 2-4 on the year heading into competition at the Fletcher Tournament that begins play today (Thursday).

 The Cowgirls were to have met Verden in the first game.

 The host school, Verden, Chickasha, Big Pasture and Empire are among some of the teams in the tourney.

Cowboy Classic Baseball Tourney Has New Look

With only six teams lined up to compete in the Cowboy Classic baseball tournament the tourney will engage in pool play instead of the traditional bracket format.

 The tournament was set to get under way this morning with Thackerville taking on Big Pasture to be followed by Thackerville and Grandfield at 12 noon. Grandfield was to have met Big Pasture today at 2 p.m. to complete the pool play for Pool A.

 Pool B will begin play at 4 p.m. today with Waurika taking on Temple at 4 p.m. That contest will be followed by Ryan meeting Temple at 6 p.m. and the day will conclude with Ryan matching up with Waurika at 8 p.m.

 All the games will be played on Larry Ninman Field at the Bob Givens Sports Complex.

 The field for this year’s tournament is not a strong one, so any of the schools could rise up and claim the tournament title.

 Thackerville is probably the favorite to take the crown for this tournament that is in its fifth year.

 The Wildcats’ record is unknown, but they did win their own invitational tourney a couple of weeks ago defeating Ringling in the championship game, 15-11.

 Thackerville’s pool opponents have only two wins between them. Big Pasture is 2-1 on the year heading into games earlier this week, while Grandfield is 0-9 not including a match up earlier this week with Chattanooga.

 It is like the opponent in the championship game for Thackerville will be Waurika, however, the Eagles come into this tournament with a 2-9 mark not including games earlier this week with Wilson and Comanche.

 The Eagles’ pool opponents have only one victory between them. The Cowboys are 1-5 on the year not including the contest with Big Pasture scheduled for earlier this week. Temple is 0-6 not including games earlier this week with Empire and Cyril.

 The tournament will take Friday off and will be completed on Saturday.

 The two third place teams from each pool will battle for fifth place on Saturday at noon, while the two second-place squads will play for the tournament’s third place at 2 p.m. Saturday.

 The championship game will pit the two pool winners and the first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.

 In event of ties in the pool play, they will be decided in four ways. The first will be head-to-head competition and the second will be runs allowed by each team that is tied. If those two do not decide things, the third tie-breaker is runs allowed in the first inning of play.

 The fourth tie-breaker is a coin flip.

Cowboy Baseballers Fall In District Tournament at Grandfield

 It was a disappointing day at the Class B District Baseball Tournament at Grandfield for the Ryan Cowboys last Thursday.

The Cowgirls dropped a heart-breaking 16-14 decision to Grandfield in the first game of the tournament and were eliminated in the second game by Olustee-Eldorado, 17-2, to end the season.

Olustee-Eldorado won the district title with a 14-1 victory over Grandfield in the finals last Friday. The Diamondbacks are slated to begin the Class B Regional tournament today at Leedey where they will meet Timberlake in the first round.

The first game for the Cowboys was a bitter one. Poor pitching allowed Grandfield to build a lead and the Cowboys trailed, 16-8, heading into the seventh inning.

A furious Cowboy rally was ended with the bases loaded when a Cowboy runner was caught between third base and home.

It was the fourth meeting between the Cowboys and the Bearcats this season and the Cowboys had won the previous three meetings in dominating fashion.

The Bearcats jumped on the Cowboys in the top of the first inning as four of the first five Grandfield batters scored to carry Grandfield to a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Cowboys got a run when Tate Kimbro was hit by a pitch and Joseph Martin reached on an error. Grayson Tomberlin walked to load the bases and Kimbro scored on Dawson Tomberlin’s fielder’s choice. That trimmed the Grandfield lead to 4-1.

But, the Bearcats struck for three more runs in the top of the second. Three consecutive singles resulted in three more runs for the Bearcats.

The Cowboys got things going in the bottom of the second with walks by Pacen Wiest and Cameron Villerreal. Trey Bryant was hit by a pitch and Kimbro singled home a run. Two more runs scored when G. Tomberlin reached on an error to get Ryan to within 7-5 heading to the third.

Grandfield scored one more run in the third inning and left the bases loaded. The Cowboys kept pace with a run in the bottom of the third when Andrew Villerreal walked and scored when Bryant was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the top of the fourth, Grandfield added another run and held the Cowboys scoreless to notch a 9-6 lead.

Grandfield continued the offensive onslaught with an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-6. The Cowboys failed to score in the bottom of the inning.

The Bearcats erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth and sent 10 batters to the plate. An error, three walks, two hit batsmen and two singles led to the uprising to give Grandfield a 16-6 lead.

The Cowboys kept the game alive in the bottom of the sixth taking advantage of four walks and a two-run single by Bryant to cut the lead to 16-8 heading to the final inning.

Grandfield threatened in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded without a run.

This set up the dramatic near comeback by the Cowboys.

Martin got things started by reaching on an error and G. Tomberlin walked. After D. Tomberlin’s fly out, A. Villerreal walked to load the bases and River Williams got a walk to score Martin.

Wiest walked to score G. Tomberlin and A. Villerreal scored on C. Villerreal’s ground out. Bryant got a two-run single that scored Williams and Wiest to cut the margin to 16-13.

Kimbro walked and Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases again for the Cowboys. G. Tomberlin walked to score Bryant and Kimbro scored as D. Tomberlin reached on an error.

The final out came when Martin was trying to score on the error and was caught between third and home to end the game and the Cowboys falling, 16-15.

Kimbro and A. Villerreal each scored three runs for the Cowboys and Bryant was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.

The Diamondbacks overwhelmed the Cowboys in the second game and held the Cowboys to only two runs in the game shortened to five innings because of the run rule.

In the bottom of the second, the Diamondbacks struck for seven runs, including a three-run home run to take a 7-0 lead.

Ryan got on the board in the top of the fourth when G. Tomberlin and D. Tomberlin both reached on errors and came around to score. The Cowboys left two runners stranded, but cut the lead to 7-2.

The Diamondbacks answered, however, with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning including another three-run homer that extended the advantage to 17-2 and ended the game.

Coach Judd Matthes’ squad finishes the year with a 4-13 record.

It is the fewest wins for the Cowboys since winning only four games in 2009. The 13 losses mark the most losses by a Cowboy squad since a 15-loss season in 2006.

Five Cowboy seniors saw their final action in the district tournament – Kimbro, D. Tomberlin, Williams, C. Villerreal and Martin.
