News relating to Family and Consumer Sciences:

Co-Parenting Classes:  This class, offered monthly, is informative for Parents, Grandparents and other relatives of minor children living with parents who are going through a separation or divorce. The next class is scheduled for 1 pm Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the Jefferson County OSU Extension Conference Room. Other dates may be scheduled as time allows. 

Oklahoma law mandates divorcing parents of minor children to take a Co-Parenting Class. To register for a class, contact Jefferson County OSU Extension office at 580-228-2332.  Pre-registration is required and there is a cost for this class. Contact Tara Brown at 580-228-2332 for additional information.  

Jefferson County Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) hosts monthly programs the 3rd Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m.; these programs include research-based educational topics.  These programs are open to the public.  

Our December meeting will be “Holiday Tea” – Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

A class for Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance will be scheduled and will be open to all ages.  If interested, or know someone who will be interested, let Tara Brown know so adequate supplies can be made available.

Jefferson County 4-H and Youth Development News:

Enrollment for 2022-2023 began August 1st through 4h.zsuite.org.  To enroll, students must be 8 years of age and in the 3rd grade (or older).  To participate in 4-H Events and Contest, members must be actively enrolled.  If you need assistance, contact Linda Whitsett or Tara Brown at Jefferson County OSU Extension 580-228-2332.

West District 4-H Has Talent is scheduled for Saturday, January 28, 2023.  Entries are due to Jefferson County OSU Extension office by 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

West District South Region Public Speaking (Speeches, Illustrated Presentations, and Demonstrations) contest will be Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church in Hydro, Oklahoma.  The contest will begin at 9 am and end by noon.  There will also be a Volunteer Conference in the afternoon for those enrolled as a 4-H Volunteer.  Contact Tara Brown for the link to register for the contest.

Shooting Sports – our next session will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2022.  We meet in the Jefferson County Fair Building.  Must be enrolled in 4-H. 

 Jefferson County Jr. Livestock Show is scheduled for Thursday, February 23-Saturday, February 25, 2023.  Entries are due by 4 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2022.

West District Duds to Dazzle is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Clinton, OK. More details will be coming.

West District South Culinary Days is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Stephens County Fairgrounds.

We are seeking responsible adults to become 4-H volunteers, contact OSU Extension at 580-228-2332 for information.

Clover Trivia:  What entity guides the 4-H Program in the United States?

 Answer: (Cooperative Extension System or Cooperative Extension Service)

Waurika and Ryan Cloverbuds Red River Rangers Club met Monday, October 7 at Ryan Sr. Citizens Center.  Leader Lori Lovett had a fun activity planned and Snacks were served to members and their parents.

The next cloverbud meeting will be 6 p.m. Monday, October 21 here at the Jefferson County Fair building located at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.  We will make smoothies using a 4-H Blender Bike. Cloverbuds are youth ages 5-7 and enrolled in 4-H.  Come join us!

Western Days

4-H members who are ages 13 and older (or in the 7th grade and older) and actively enrolled in Jefferson County 4-H:  We are excited to include a Teen Leadership Group to our county programs!  Opportunities will be included to assist developing leadership include planning county 4-H fun events, help plan end of the year banquet, assist with county 4-H contests and more!  Contact Tara Brown at 580-228-2332.

Ringling 4-H now has a volunteer Adult leader!  Parilyn Hairod is excited to rejuvenate Ringling 4-H.  She and her husband, Kent, with the assistance of Amanda Ridenour, set up a booth at Ringling Western Days Saturday, October 5.  We had tables set to show a few items Ringling 4-H members had made during the summer as well as information on how to enroll in 4-H.  There were also tables set up for youth and parents to come and paint a flower pot then, after it dried, planted a pansy flower in their flower pot.  57 youth participated and we are excited and hope to regain an active 4-H group in Ringling!

Jefferson County 4-H Kids Cooking in the Kitchen:  Canning Workshop – make plum jelly on Thursday, August 1 from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.  Class is limited to 8 – call to reserve your spot by 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 30.

Workshops will be held at the Jefferson County OSU Extension Office. 580-228-2332

Jefferson County Free Fair is scheduled for September 4-7 (Wednesday – Saturday), 2019. Our county fair is open to all ages! Fun activities include – Ice Cream Contest, Jefferson County Best Pie Maker contest, Jefferson County OHCE Quilt Turning, and other activities are in planning stages.  Open classes offer opportunities to your variety of projects, hobbies, crafts and more.  

All eligible 4-H entries will be given the opportunity to be entered and taken to the Oklahoma State Fair, Oklahoma City on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.  Jefferson County will follow the state fair information for 4-H classes. Co-Parenting for Resilience:  Divorce or separation is not an easy or favorable decision, especially when minor children are in the home.  A class is available for divorcing or separating parents with minor children living in the home.  My next class is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2018. Pre-registration is required. Call Jefferson County OSU Extension Office at 580-228-2332 for registration information.  This class is mandatory by law in Oklahoma and is also valuable for Grandparents and other relatives of minor children going through a divorce or separation.

OHCE (Oklahoma Home and Community Education)

The Jefferson County OHCE met Tuesday, October 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Waurika Sr. Citizens Center.  Present were Melicia McFadden, president, Genevieve Hogstad, Rubye Benson, Carolyn Arnold, secretary, Rose Yeager, guest, Tara Brown, advisor, and Pat McGriff, member who presented our lesson on “Essential Oils”.  Pat gave informative information on Essential Oils and many uses for them.  Some were for calming, relaxing; some were for energy and others blended could be an aid to various aches, pains and other purposes.  Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 20; we will meet at the Waurika Sr. Citizens Center about 12 noon.  Come eat lunch with us, stay and listen to our program “Repurposed Jars” presented by Tara Brown, Jefferson County OSU Extension Educator, FCS/4-H Youth Development.  

Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance

Tai chi: Moving for Better Balance is an evidence-based program that focuses on improving functional ability, such as balance and physical function, to reduce fall-related risks and frequency.  

The series of slow continuous movements of Tai chi: Moving for Better Balance help those participating reduce stress, increase balance and flexibility as well as learn relaxation to improve their overall mind, body and spirit. 

Tai chi: Moving for Better Balance is for people at all levels of mobility and can be done while sitting. Tara Brown recently received her certification through the Injury Prevention Service, Oklahoma State Department of Health to teach this program.

The class will be held at 9:30 a.m. Mondays beginning October 15th through November 12th, at the Gleason Memorial Library located at 101 E. Main, Ringling.

West District 4-H South region will hold a Creative Culinary Contest – Fruit and Vegetable Sculpture on Wednesday, June 24 via ZOOM. Registration is due by Friday, June 19.  Youth can register by filling out the Microsoft form online (contact Tara Brown for the link).  Rules will be sent to eligible 4-H members in our June-July 4-H newsletter.

4-H State Roundup 2020 will be held virtually during the month of July and is open to 4-H members who have completed the 7th grade. Registration is now available online – contact Tara Brown for the registration links.  Registration is due June 26, 2020.

COVID-19 Current common scams

• A call or e-mail claiming: “I can get you your stimulus check faster…” Or “I have your stimulus check and need a transfer fee or a processing fee…” Or “I need you to verify your bank account number so I can deposit your stimulus check.”

•A call from “Medicare” (not really Medicare) or another vendor offering: COVID testing, medication, vaccination, but “we need your Medicare number to set this up.”

Requests from charities. They may not be legit.   •Work from home or debt consolidation offers.

• A “duct cleaning” company offering to clean your home of viruses.

Never give your Social Security, and other personal information over the telephone unless you made the initial contact and you are certain your contact is legitimate.  

Unemployment scams

• More than one person I have heard of has received a letter from the Oklahoma Employment Securities Commission telling them that they have applied for unemployment using a new address. This is clearly a scam intended to claim unemployment in another person’s name.

•Report this immediately to the OESC.

Recipe

CHICKEN TENDERS WITH SALSA

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth

1 box roasted garlic-and-olive oil couscous

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

6 chicken tenders

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

3/4 teaspoon black pepper, ground

3 medium bell peppers, sliced

1/2 medium sweet onion

2 cloves garlic

salsa, desired amount

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Bring broth to a boil in a 12-inch skillet. Pour over couscous in a medium bowl; cover and set aside.

2. Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat until very hot. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper. Place chicken in skillet, skin sides down, and cook 10 minutes or until skin is browned and crispy. Turn chicken over and cook 4 minutes. Transfer chicken to a plate; discard drippings.

3. Sauté peppers and next 2 ingredients for 3 minutes. Arrange chicken on top of peppers, skin sides up. Bake at 425 degrees F for 10 minutes or until done.

4. Fluff couscous with a fork. Serve chicken and peppers on couscous, and top with desired amount of salsa.

Presley Reid, Loco, Oklahoma was selected to receive the Jefferson County’s E.C. Joachim Scholarship award.  This scholarship is made available by the family of E.C. Joachim a true Extension supporter in Love, Jefferson and Cotton Counties.  The family chose to continue his love and support for 4-H particularly in these counties where he served in Extension for many years, by providing scholarships to graduating Seniors who have been active in their county 4-H.  Tara Brown, Jefferson County OSU Extension Educator, FCS/4-H Youth Development presents Presley with the award.

Presley stated “My whole life has been spent farming and ranching with family and friends. I love to play sports.  I have always been active in softball, basketball and rodeo. As I have grown into my high school years, my teammates and I have been very successful on the field and the court.  We own horses that we use on the farm, ranch and rodeo…. I have to give credit to our 4H program for all this success.  Whether I really knew it or not, 4H has always been a huge part of my life and has made a big impact on me…. 4H has helped me gain knowledge and leadership skills that I will need in the future… I personally believe every kid needs to be involved in 4H, not just the show kids.”

Jefferson County OHCE (Oklahoma Home and Community Education) meet the 3rd Tuesdays in the Waurika Sr. Citizens Center unless otherwise noted.  Dr. Lynn Null, Extension Educator, FCS/4-H Youth Development, CED Comanche County presented “10 Minutes to the Table” to OHCE members at the Jefferson County OSU Fairgrounds; she prepared a delicious dish of Chicken Enchiladas Verde.  Membership to OHCE is open to any individual. What is State 4-H Roundup?  Roundup provides lots of opportunities to improve youth’s leadership skills by meeting other 4-H members from across Oklahoma and participating in outstanding workshops and spirited contests!  Attendees must have completed the 7th grade.  Roundup takes place on OSU Campus in Stillwater with main meetings taking place in Gallagher –Iba Arena; workshops are provided in many of the campus classrooms.  Roundup up gives the attendees an opportunity to see OSU Campus where Roundup attendees are housed in The Commons units.  This year theme “Passport to the Past, Ticket to Tomorrow” promises great fun while learning!  Pictures and an article on 2019 State 4-H Roundup will be in next week’s newspaper edition.  Tara Brown, Extension Educator – Family & Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development will chaperone Jefferson County’s delegation Tuesday, July 23 -26. 

State Fair Cupcake Wars and Fruit and Vegetable Sculpting Contest Information this year the information has be posted to the Oklahoma 4-H Website.  http://4h.okstate.edu/events-and-activities/state-events-activities/oklahoma-state-fairs/oklahoma-state-fair  Registration is based on first come first serve.  Registration opens August 1st and will need to be sent to the State 4-H Office this year.

Annual Forage Insurance; Changes to Rainfall Index . . .

If you have been using Forage Insurance for your annual forages, such as wheat pasture, sudan, and other forage sorghums, there are some changes for the coming year. Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Area Economist J.J. Jones outlines those changes below.

For the crop year 2018-19 the Risk Management Agency (RMA) has made some changes to the Rainfall Index – Annual Forage Insurance (RI-AF). These new changes do affect which policies producers should choose and use, but before discussing the changes let’s review just what is the Annual Forage Rainfall Insurance.

RI-AF is an insurance product offered by the Risk Management Agency (RMA) through private insurance companies to help producers protect against production losses due to lack of moisture for annual forage crops. RI-AF is similar to the Pasture Range and Forage Insurance (PRF). The difference between the two products is the type of forage crops that are covered. PRF is for perennial forage crops while RI-AF is for annual forage crops such as wheat, rye, oats, sudan, haygrazer and millet.

Like PRF the RI-AF uses the National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center data and 12 X 12 mile grid system to determine the rainfall index. Indemnity payments are calculated based on the difference between the calculated rainfall index and the normal rainfall index within a grid and for a specific time interval. Payments are not determined by individual producer’s losses.

Producers can choose to insure all or any portion of their acreage. To use RI-AF a producer must make six option choices. They are growing season, coverage level, productivity factor, insurable interest, insurable acres, and index intervals.

 

Changes to RI-AF

In the past producers were given a choice between two growing seasons. For 2018-19 the number of seasons in which to choose from will be four and instead of growing season the choices are for the planting season. So now, producers will choose the season in which they plant the annual forage. In addition to the changes to the number of seasons, the crop reporting dates for the different seasons have been changed as well. The four planting seasons and crop reporting dates are listed below.

Planting Seasons       Crop Acreage Reporting Date

Season 1 – July 16 to October 15       October 15

Season 2 – October 16 to January 15 January 15

Season 3 – January 16 to April 15      April 15

Season 4 – April 16 to July 15           July 15

Another change is the sign up date. The sign up is now July 15, 2018 for all 2018-19 planting seasons. Producers must choose which season and number of acres by July 15, but they are not obligated or insured until they report the crop acreage by the acreage reporting date. Producers can nullify the policy by reporting zero acres planted by the crop acres reporting date.

A third change is the time in which the policy premium is due. Producers must sign up by July 15, 2018 but are not billed for the insurance until August 2019. If producers sign up and then report zero acres planted then no premium is due.

4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.

Jefferson County Jr. Livestock Show will be Wednesday, February 28 – Saturday, March 3, 2018.  On Thursday, March 1, Sheep and Goats will weigh in at 10 a.m.; the Sheep Show will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the Goat Show.  Hogs will weigh in 8 a.m. Friday, March 2 with the Hog Show beginning at 3 p.m.  The Cattle will weigh in Saturday March 3 at 9 a.m. and begin showing at 10 a.m.  The Premium banquet will be 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3.

Come support 4-H and FFA Exhibitors.  Concession will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning; proceeds from the concession go to help support Jefferson County 4-H.

Culinary (Cooking Club)

Due to inclement winter weather on Wednesday, March 28, the March Culinary meeting was postponed and will be rescheduled.

4H is a Community

4H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. Kids complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and citizenship, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Kids experience 4H in every county and parish in the country—through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and 4H camps.

The Oklahoma State University Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology would like to announce an Entomology Open House recruitment event on the OSU campus on Saturday, April 22nd, 2017.  Students and their families will have a chance to meet entomologists and entomology students, talk with academic advisors, and tour entomology labs.  Discussion will focus on entomology courses at OSU, career opportunities in entomology, and scholarship availability, with the live insects at the Insect Petting Zoo on-hand to entertain.  The event will be held at the Insect Adventure, 3003 W. Virginia, Stillwater, OK, from 10 am until 2 pm with a delicious catered lunch provided.

2018 Oklahoma 4-H Foundation Essay Contest

Oklahoma 4-H Foundation is excited to offer the 2nd annual Dr. Ron and Linda Sholar Essay Contest. Members ages 13 and older are invited and encouraged to enter this contest, sponsored by Dr. Ron and Linda Scholar.

Purpose – The purpose of the essay contest is to:

1. Provide participants an opportunity to express themselves in regards to the impact of 4-H on their home state of Oklahoma and the influence of 4-H on them personally.

2. Encourage the development of excellent skills of written expression.

Theme: “Because of 4-H, I can…..”

Essays will be judged by a selection committee with separate cash prizes awarded to the winners. First place cash prize of $500, $300 for second place and $200 for third.

The entry deadline for this contest is April 27, 2018. Entries postmarked by April 27th will be accepted. Essay contest winners will be selected and notified in May of 2018, and the formal presentation of award checks will be made during State 4-H Roundup.  All entries become the property of the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation.

Eligibility: The contest is open to all Oklahoma 4-H Members age 13 and older.

Format and Contents: All essays should be no less than 1,000 words and no more than 1,200 words, typed and double spaced. Include your name, age, address, telephone number, school, and grade as well as a statement from a parent, guardian or 4-H Educator certifying that the essay is your original work.  The main selection criteria will be creativity and presentation of thought.

Jefferson County Free Fair – Wednesday, September 4 – Saturday, September 7, 2019.  Get your canning, baked items, crafts, hobbies, Quilts and other sewing projects, plants and other items ready to bring to show at the fair!  Other activities are being planned and include Home Made Ice Cream contest; come hear Bill Baker and his band! It is ‘Time’ to finish your projects for the Fair! 

Line dance is a good active-type of exercise.  We will begin a Line Dance Class Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.  Angie Nash will lead our classes.  

Jefferson County OHCE (Oklahoma Home and Community Education) 

Our group’s meeting includes an educational program; our August meeting will be Tuesday, August 20 – UFO (Unfinished Fair Objects) – bring your unfinished item and complete it to enter it/them into the fair!  Contact Tara Brown for more information.  OHCE is open to anyone interested in meeting and receiving research-based educational information and enjoying fellowship!

Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Services  For us, it’s personal. Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service county educators and area, district and state specialists develop science-based educational programs to help Oklahomans solve local issues and concerns, promote leadership and manage resources wisely. Programs focus on:

• Increasing opportunities for agricultural enterprises

• Natural resources and environmental management

• Food, nutrition, health and safety education

• Youth, family and community development

Your Jefferson County OSU Extension Services office is open 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday, excluding holidays recognized by our county offices.  Leland McDaniel, AG/4-H Youth Development and CED, Tara Brown, Family & Consumer Sciences/4-H Youth Development and Linda Whitsett, Administrative Support Specialist are staff members ready to assist you at 580-228-2332.
