Members of Waurika FCCLA recently attended the South 4 District Leadership Meeting in Duncan. Approximately 500 students from southwest Oklahoma attended the meeting held at the Simmons Center. This year’s meeting, called “The Great Leadership Adventure”, centered on an outdoor camping theme. Members wore their new chapter tshirts, which followed the theme. FCCLA chapters collected 400 pounds of aluminum pull tabs to donate to their service project, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Oklahoma. The highlight of the meeting was the Oklahoma City dance troupe, Generation Why, which entertained the students, as well as delivered messages about anti-bullying, suicide prevention and overcoming adversity. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is the student leadership organization that accompanies the Family and Consumer Sciences program at Waurika High School.

Waurika Band Carnival
The Waurika High School Band Carnival is Saturday night, November 2nd at the High School. The Queen coronation begins at 5:30 p.m. There is a $1.00 admission to the coronation, but the ticket can be used for a free drink in the concession with purchase of a food item. The kitchen will also open at 5:30. Games for kids and bingo will start at 6. Wristbands are available for bingo at $25.00 that cover 30 games. Wristbands can be bought in advance for $20.00 from both school offices. There will be 5 bonus games. Wristbands will also be sold for all of the bonus games for $15.00. Bonus games will include a 32” Toshiba TV, $100 Quik Mart gas certificate, and a huge VISA gift card for the last game.
The kitchen will feature Mama Josie’s Enchilada Dinner, Windthorst German Sausage, hamburgers, chili, and other tasty items.
Carnival games include sand art, face painting, a bounce house, hair painting, cake walk, ring toss, football throw, basketball throw and many other fun games for kids. In addition, there will be a dance after the carnival from 8 p.m. until bingo is over. Admission for the dance is $3.00.
The Waurika Band program consists of over 90 students from grades 6 through 12. The band has been a consistent winner at OSSAA contests, having been to state in 8 of the 12 years of Mr. Hodges’ years at Waurika. These are the only times in school history the band has been to state. The High School band is planning on making their 3rd trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida in the May of 2020. Funds will be used to help with that as well as supporting other activities of all the bands. We ask for your support of our band program at this carnival.
First Annual Powder Puff Football Game
On Tuesday, October 8th, the WHS Band sponsored a high school powder puff football game at Cy Sloan Stadium. The teams were made up of sophomores/seniors and freshmen/juniors. (Due to a lack of participation, some juniors had to switch teams). The coaches of the sophomore/senior team were senior football players Turner Mora and Edwin Garcia. The freshmen/junior team coaches were Payton Fletcher and Hunter Wesberry.
Senior coach Edwin Garcia said, “It was pretty fun, but different due to not being on the field.” When asked if this experience made him think about coaching in the future, he simply laughed and said “No…”. The sophomore/senior team won with a score of 19-12.
Money raised from the gate, concessions, and shirt sales will help pay for the band trip to Disney in May. “I think it was very successful, and everyone had a good time,” band director Everett Hodges said. “It’ll most likely become an annual thing.”

This is an exciting time at WHS, with Blue and Gold orders and Homecoming floats the FFA kids have been extremely busy. October 22nd the W.A.E.B. will be hosting a hamburger feed at Sorosis Park, tickets are $8.00 for 12 and up, $5.00 for 5-11 year olds, 4 and under free. There will be performances from Hunter Wesberry, Bailey Wesberry, Delaini Wesberry, Chloe Adkins, and Mallory Adkins. There will be a Halloween costume contest, ice cream freeze off contest, bounce house, face painting and a roping demonstration. Raffle tickets will be available for a One Man- One Day, Management Buck Hunt donated by Stuart Ranch Outfitters. Tickets will be $10 each or $20 for three. There will also be a Pierce Cooler given away at the Festival. ALL PROCEEDS GO TO THE BENEFIT OF WAURIKA YOUTH AG PROGRAMS, 4-H & FFA.
Love.Project Comes to Waurika
Berkeley Smith (granddaughter of Nick and Rita Foster and the great granddaughter of Bobby Fitzgerald in Waurika) is on a mission. It’s called the Love.Project.
As a ten year old girl she has become aware of the needs of young women and the challenges they face in public schools when it comes to access to feminine hygiene products during the school day. It can be embarrassing for some girls to have to constantly grab their gym bag or purse before being excused to the rest room during class or perhaps needing to ask a teacher for the needed items if they were not able to bring them from home.
In order to remedy this dilemma, she came up with the idea of installing cabinets in the ladies rest rooms that could be continually stocked with feminine products and available free of charge. The idea was implemented in her school at Zanies. The idea caught on and now Berkeley is branching out to other schools in the area.
The Love.Project is now active in Zanies, Healdton, Wilson, and most recently Waurika—her mother’s hometown. Berkeley is the daughter of Jessica Smith, formerly Jessica Foster. She is a 2003 graduate of Waurika.
The project has also been approved for Tahlequah and Tupelo Oklahoma.
Niecsa Camarillo will be the project coordinator for Waurika. She is a member of the student council as the Seventh Grade Class President. Niecsa had wanted to start something similar in Waurika before she heard of the Love Project. In the mean time, Berkeley had approached Waurika and gained approval while Mrs. Jessica Cornelison was attempting to make contact with Berkely because she had seen the project on Facebook. Mrs. Cornelison says it was quite a coincidence that the two came together about the same time.
Berkely would like to see the project reach all the schools in Oklahoma and someday reach schools across the nation.
In order to raise money the project is selling t-shirts and bracelets. All the proceeds are used to purchase feminine hygiene products to be distributed throughout the schools. There will also be an Amazon wish list to allow local support of the Waurika schools project. Other fund raising efforts will be announced in the near future.

Waurika FCCLA Members Attend LEAD Conference
On September 12, seven officers from Waurika FCCLA attended the LEAD Conference at the Great Plains Technology Center in Lawton. The state conference provides leadership training for chapter officers. In the morning session, students heard keynote speaker, Rameil Sampson, who informed them how they could be a H.E.R.O. to their chapters by being honest, energizing, reliable and optimistic.
He motivated the group to identify obstacles to reaching their goals and figure out a way to overcome them. The afternoon sessions were hosted by Oklahoma Challenge, a teen traffic safety program, where materials were provided for students to take home and share with their schools. Students enjoyed a traffic trivia game show format that concluded the conference. Waurika FCCLA Adviser, Mrs. Bruner, said the conference is a great experience for officers because they come back super motivated to start planning activities for the school year.
Waurika FFA Participates in Fair and Reads to Elementary Students
This month the Waurika FFA has been very busy! Members have participated in the Jefferson County Free Fair, Ag in the Classroom Reading Program, and the officer team attended the 2019 C.O.L.T. conference. Several members attended all activities. The Ag in the Classroom activity consisted of Waurika Ag. Education students reading to the classes at Waurika Elementary School. Everyone had a great time and are ready to continue being active.

Open enrollment for Waurika Elementary is August 6th, 7th, & 8th from 8:30- 12:00.
Enrollment for Waurika Public Schools MS/HS is August 7th & 8th. 9:00 am to 1:00pm for 6th – 8th graders. 5:30 – 7:30 pm for 9th – 12th graders.
Back to School Night for Waurika Elementary is August 13th at 6:00pm.
