Cowgirl 3,200-Meter Relay Squad Sets School Mark

In only their second outing of the outdoor track season, the Ryan Cowgirls’ 3,200-meter relay team turned in a record-breaking performance at the Cache Invitational last Thursday at Cache High School.

The relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Holland Carter and Juliet Spangler smashed the school record with a time of 11:56.76 – besting the old mark by nearly 11 seconds that was set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference track meet.

The Cowgirls, however, could manage only a fourth place finish in the 3,200-meter relay in a tough meet that featured a large and small school division.

The small school division was comprised of schools from Class 4A down to Class A. Marlow claimed the team title with 137 points – well ahead of runner up Rush Springs that finished with 96 points.

Ryan tied Hobart for ninth place in the small school division with both teams earning 20 points in the meet.

Spangler was the only Cowgirl competitor to score in any other events in the meet.

The Cowgirl sophomore was third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:24.33. That time is the third best in school history with Spangler owning the two fastest times in the event.

Spangler also claimed a bronze medal in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13:45.36.

That time is the second best mark in the event in school history and Spangler owns the school record at 13:38.16.

The Cowgirls’ 1,600-meter relay team of Harmon, York, Carter and Spangler did not score in the meet finishing in seventh place, however, their recorded time of 5:21.37 is thought to be the second best time in school history and just six seconds off the school record of 5:15.0 set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference meet.

Other competitors included Carter in the 800 meters who also finished one spot out of earniing points, while Harmon finished 11th in the event.

York was eighth in the 3,200 meters.

Sadie Guzman and Justyce Keith also competed for the Cowgirls in the sprint events.

The Cowgirls will be in action again tomorrow at the Stratford Invitational and will compete on April 13 at the Southern Oklahoma 8-Man Invitational hosted by Waurika.

Cowgirl Softballers Struggle to Find Opponents

0

Ryan’s slow-pitch softball team has faced a couple of hurdles in getting the 2018 season into full swing.

The Cowgirls of coach Stan Mueggenborg have inherited quite a bit of extra practice time from having scheduled opponents back out of games because they did not have enough players.

The Cowgirls are slated to get back in action Monday with a game against Comanche on Larry Ninman Field at the Bob Givens Sports Complex.

Ryan’s first game was cancelled because of previously schedule school conflicts.

And, Temple and Big Pasture, who were both on the Cowgirl slate for last week, do not have enough players to field a slow-pitch softball team.

That means the Cowgirls have only played one game – an 11-10 loss to Grandfield.

In addition to the contest with Comanche, the Cowgirls are scheduled to take on Geronimo at home one week from today.

Waurika Gets Track Season Started at Velma-Alma Meet

0

It has been a slow start to the track season for coach Joe Masoner and the Eagle and Lady Eagle thinclads.

Waurika competed in the Velma-Alma Invitational on March 8 and the Lady Eagles were able to tie for fourth place in the meet that was won by the host school.

Waurika finished in a tie with Maysville and each school had 42 points in the meet.

The Waurika boys did not score at the meet.

Lexie Streeter and Asia Smith each picked up gold medals for the Lady Eagles.

Streeter topped the field in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:50.68.

In the 800 meter run, Smith picked up first place with a time of 2:43.72.

The 3,200-meter relay team for the Lady Eagles finished in fourth place in the race. The squad posted a time of 11:59.78. The Lady Eagles did not place in this event in any meet last season.

The 1,600-meter relay team for the Lady Eagles finished in sixth place with a time of 5:17.85. In 2017, the Lady Eagles did not place in this event.

Rounding out the placers for the Lady Eagles was a silver medal performance by Madison Roberson in the shot put. Her best toss was measured at 32-10.

Waurika will be back in action on the track on Tuesday when they travel to Alex for competition with other eight-man football schools.

The Waurika thinclads will return to Alex on April 5 for the Alex Invitational which will feature schools of various size.

Cowboys Drop Two in Red Dirt Classic

0

It was a last minute addition to the Ryan baseball schedule and even though the Cowboys picked up some extra games, the results were not favorable.

The Cowboy nine dropped a 19-0 decision to eventual tournament champion Comanche on Thursday and suffered a 10-9 loss to Velma-Alma in last Friday’s game.

The Cowboys are now 1-4 on the year heading into action against Thackerville at the Wildcat diamond on Monday.

The Cowboys will return to Larry Ninman Field on Tuesday at Bob Givens Sports Complex against Turner.

Ryan will end the busy week with a matchup against Comanche on the road next Thursday.

In the first-round game with Comanche, the Cowboys managed only two base runners and no base hits in the three-inning contest.

The Cowboys had two base runners in the first inning on an error and a walk, but could not get the timely hit needed to try and rally after Comanche had scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning.

The Indians added nine more before the game was halted.

In Friday’s game with Velma-Alma, the Comets scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth (and final inning) as the first three Comet batters reached base on two walks and a hit batsman. An error by the Cowboys gave the Comets the go-ahead run.

Velma-Alma got off to a 7-0 lead after two innings before the Cowboys mounted a five-run rally in the top of the third inning.

Pacen Wiest got things started for the Cowboys with a one-out walk and then Dawson Tomberlin singled. A two-out single by Grayson Tomberlin was followed by singles by Tate Kimbro, Gunner Phillips and Andrew Villerreal. Coupled with a Comet error, the Cowboys had scored five runs before the end of the inning to narrow the score to 7-5.

The Cowboys actually took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with four runs that included a three-run triple by Villerreal. A single by River Williams drove in Villerreal to put the Cowboys in front, 9-7, heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Comets responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs to tie the game. V-A gained the lead as two hits and two errors led to two runs leaving the score knotted at 9-9 heading to the final frame.

In the top of the fifth the Cowboys went in order setting up the Comets to score the winning run.

The Cowboys the scored their first win of the year last Tuesday with a victory over Grandfield as previously reported.

The Cowboys fell behind 3-0 after one inning of play against the Bearcats but rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

An error helped Kimbro reach base and then after two were out, the Cowboys were able to put four runs on the board with the benefit of only one hit – a single by Joseph Martin.

Grandfield answered with a run in the top of the third and after Ryan failed to score, the game was tied at the end of three innings, 4-4.

The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as a walk eventually led to a run. It was the only base runner for Grandfield in the inning to give the Bearcats a 5-4 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Cowboys exploded for six runs to essentially put the game away.

G. Tomberlin had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double. Four Bearcat errors and three walks helped contribute to the big inning for the Cowboys.

In the bottom of the sixth Ryan put two more runs on the board without the aid of a base hit.

G. Tomberlin got the win on the mound for the Cowboys and helped his own cause with two hits – both doubles – and two runs batted in.

Waurika Wins Fourth Game of the Season

Waurika played host to Grandfield last Thursday evening and came away with their fourth victory of the season.

Pitcher Seth Waid led the Eagles out on the field to begin the opening inning. Seth had a great start by striking the first batter out.

Grandfield would eventually score three runs before reaching their third out.

Jordan Watkins was the first to make it to base for the Eagles. Watkins scored soon thereafter by stealing home from third.

Colton Bryant (the base stealer) was the designator runner for Gatlin Black. Bryant stole second and third and then made it to home.

Bryson Hernandez scored as well and that ended the first inning tying the score 3-3.

Waurika held up defensively early. Seth stopped a grounded hit and pitched it to Michael Bryant getting the runner out at first.

Seth struck another batter out.

Grandfield finally got a runner across home plate. It was their only score of the second inning.

Michael Bryant caught a pop fly putting the Eagles back up to bat.

Hunter Wesberry was the first up to bat for the Eagles at the bottom of the second. Hunter was hit by the pitch and went to first and stole second. He would eventually score.

Zac Brown was the next Eagle to score.

Gatlin Black had a base hit. Colton Bryant came in again as his designated runner.

Waurika struck out before another score, but Waurika was not in the lead 5-4.

Grandfield scored twice early in the top of the third. It would be the last time they would do so.

However, the Eagles were able to make a triple play later in the inning. Great ball handling forced runners out at third and first.

Gatlin had said he was “just going to get a base hit” while he was in the dugout. He did that more than once.

At the bottom of the third Michael Bryant was the first up to bat. Austin Dyer batted second.

Kevin Garcia was the last up at bat. Waurika had failed to score so they trailed 5-6.

Once again, Michael Bryant caught a pop fly that resulted in Grandfield’s first out of the fourth inning.  He would do that again later in the inning to give Grandfield their third out.

Michael Bryant

Hunter Wesberry was the first to bat for Waurika at the bottom of the fourth.

As hard as they tried, the Eagles still failed to score before their third out.

Austin Dyer went to the pitcher’s mound at the top of the fifth inning. Austin dispensed of batters rather quickly throwing strikes with quite a bit of heat.

The fifth inning was the turning point for Waurika.

Gatlin Black was the first up to bat and landed the ball just inside the left field wall. That put Black on second base. Colton Bryant came in as his designated runner again.  Colton would steal bases and tie up the game with his score.

Hunter Wesberry went to bat with the bases loaded. He was able to RBI Bryson Hernandez. That score put Waurika ahead. That would be the last time Waurika would score.

Neither team scored again and the game ended with Waurika winning with the score 7-6.

Cowboys Nine Pick Up First Win of Season

0

It has not been a good start to the baseball season for the Ryan Cowboys.

But, Tuesday night on Larry Ninman Field, it got a little bit better as the Cowboys record a 12-6 victory over Grandfield to move to 1-2 on the season.

No other details about the game were made available.

In the first two games of the season, Ryan fell at Turner, 8-0, last Thursday and then dropped a 22-r4 decision to Comanche on Larry Ninman Field at the Bob Givens Sports Complex on Monday.

The season’s home opener got off to a rough start as Comanche exploded for eight runs on just three hits as the Class 3A Indians took advantage of two Ryan errors, three walks and two hit batsmen.

The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the first with three tallies as five of the first six batters reached base.

The Cowboy cause was helped along by a pair of hit batsmen and a walk.

The only hit in the inning for the Cowboys was by Andrew Villarreal.

The Indians added two runs in the second inning and three more in the third inning, while the Cowboys could only must a single run to trail 13-4.

The Cowboy run came after Grayson Tomberlin doubled and River Williams singled G. Tomberlin around to score.

That would be the final run the Cowboys could generate.

Comanche added nine runs in the top of the sixth as they took advantage of three hit batsmen, two errors, three walks and a pair of doubles.

Joseph Martin suffered the loss for the Cowboys on the mound.

In last Thursday’s game with Turner, the Cowboys could get nothing done at the plate.

Turner’s Chase Greenwood tossed a one-hotter and struck out 11 Ryan batters in just five innings in a game shortened by the run rule.

Turner scored two runs in the first, four runs in the third and two runs in the fifth inning to end the game with only one out in the final inning.

G. Tomberlin picked up the only hit for the Cowboys.

Dawson Tomberlin took the loss on the mound for the Cowboys giving up five walks but surrendering only two hits on the day.

Ryan will be off through spring break, but the Cowboys will be busy when they resume action.

The Cowboys will travel to Thackerville to battle the Wildcats on March 26 and will host Turner on March 27. The Cowboys will play their third game of the week on March 29 at Comanche.

Cowgirls Fall to Grandfield in Season Opener

0

The Ryan Cowgirls opened the slow-pitch softball season one week ago Tuesday and suffered a heart-breaking 11-10 loss at the hands of Grandfield at Larry Ninman Field at the Bob Givens Sports Complex.

Ryan was to have been back in action this afternoon hosting Big Pasture.

That will be the final action for the Cowgirls until a March 26 encounter at home with Comanche. Ryan will also battle Geronimo two weeks from today. Both games will be on the Cowgirls’ home diamond.

It looked promising for the Cowboys after the first inning as Brooklyn Charmason retired the three Grandfield batters in order and the Cowgirls hit the Lady Bearcats for three runs in the bloom of the first.

Samantha Good and Sadie Guzman reached base and Abbie Bolin blasted a three-run homer to give the Cowgirls the 3-0 lead after one inning.

Grandfield answered in the top of the second with three runs of their own before the Cowgirls regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a single tally.

The Lady Bearcats struck for two more runs in the top of the third giving Grandfield a 5-4 lead, but the Cowgirls managed to tied the score in the bottom of the third with a run.

Grandfield. Took the lead in the top of the fourth with a run and added to the margin with two runs in the top of the fifth to lead, 8-5.

The Cowgirls rallied, however, in the bottom of the fourth with two runs – including Bolin’s second four-bagger of the contest – to narrow the gap to 8-7 heading into the sixth inning.

Grandfield managed two runs in the top of the sixth and added another in the top of the seventh to gain an 11-7 advantage.

The Cowgirls then mounted a rally in the bottom of the final frame but came up just short.

Three of the first four Cowgirl batters reached base and came around to score including Guzman, Bolin and Randi Lipton.

After two were out, the Cowgirls loaded the bases but could not score the tying run.

The Cowgirls left 10 runners stranded in the contest.

Ryan was scheduled to take on Temple Tuesday, but the Lady Tigers were not able to field a team for the 2018 season.

Various Factors Hamper The Start of Spring Sports for Cowboys, Eagles

Scouting the Jefferson County sports scene while wondering if March Madness is really about tracking spring sports or about NCAA basketball!

Between weather, playing conditions and a bevy of extra-curricular activities that keep students busy in the spring, some spring sports have had trouble getting under way.

Such is the case for slow-pitch softball and baseball at Ryan High School.

The Cowboy nine was scheduled to take the field for the season-opener last Thursday, but playing conditions on Larry Ninman Field were not up to par after recent rains and the game with Temple was postponed.

The Cowboys were scheduled to begin the season at Turner today with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Now the home opener is slated for Monday as the Cowboys will play host to Comanche and will wrap up the pre-spring break part of the schedule next Tuesday by traveling to Grandfield.

For the Cowgirl slow-pitch softball team, the season was scheduled to begin last Monday against Lawton Christian, but because a number of the players were attending the State Beta Club convention in Oklahoma City, the game was canceled.

The Cowgirls were to open the season last Tuesday by hosting Grandfield in a Southern Eight conference clash and those results will appear in next week’s paper.

The first road game for the Cowgirls will be next Tuesday when they will travel to Temple. The softballers will wrap up the pre-spring break part of their schedule on March 15 when they will host Big Pasture.

Waurika was able to get its baseball season started but had its first two contests rained out.

The Eagles opened the season with a 16-8 loss to Frederick on the Bombers’ home diamond and then had another game postponed before dropping a twinbill at Central High, 16-4 and 7-6.

Waurika faced Empire Monday in its home opener for the 2018 season, but dropped a 5-1 decision to the Bulldogs.

The Eagle nine was to have begun play today in the Southwest Donkey Invitational at Bray-Doyle. Waurika was to have met Wynnewood in the first round.

The tournament forced a postponement of Friday’s scheduled contest between Ryan and Waurika that was on tap to be played at Ryan.

The Eagles will return to the diamond on Monday at Dickson and then return home to face Grandfield one week from today before taking time off for spring break.

As always check social media or with your local school to stay up with any last-minute changes in the schedule for baseball, slow-pitch softball, track and golf at the two Jefferson County schools.

The annual Southern Eight Conference All-Star basketball games were played at Temple last Monday night and both games came down the wire.

In the girls’ contest, the White team made up of players from Big Pasture, Temple and Ryan came out on top, 50-49, over the Dark team that consisted of players from Waurika, Grandfield and Geronimo.

In the nightcap, the Dark squad (players from Big Pasture, Waurika and Ryan) used 11 three-pointers, including one in the final seconds, to get a 64-63 win over the White team which was comprised of players from Geronimo, Temple and Grandfield.

Steve Spangler, the head coach of the Ryan girls, directed the White team, while Kalee Baxter of Waurika coached the Dark team.

In the girls’ game, the White team overcame the 18-point performance of Waurika’s Madison Roberson, to get the victory.

The White team got off to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter thanks to Ryan’s Juliet Spangler’s five points.

However, the Dark team came back in the second frame to narrow the lead to 30-28 at the break.

The Dark managed to grab the lead at 43-41 heading into the fourth quarter, but it was the scoring efforts of the Ryan duo of Lily York and MacKenzie Lewis that rallied the White team to the victory.

Topping the scorers for the White team was Ryan’s Samantha Good with nine points. Spangler finished with seven, York had six and Lewis added five points.

Nine of the 10 members of the White team scored.

Adding to Roberson’s game-high point total was Grandfield’s Laylee Ramirez that totaled 13 points in the losing effort.

Asia Smith of Waurika contributed two points, while the Lady Eagles’ Lexie Streeter played but did not score.

The Cowboys’ Judd Matthes coached the Dark team to the narrow victory thanks to Big Pasture’s Dalton Groves’ long-range trey with three seconds to play to decide the contest.

The Dark team managed a 14-11 lead after the first quarter, but the White squad snared a 30-29 advantage at the half.

The Dark outscored the White, 17-15, in the third quarter to hold a slim one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams battled on even terms in the fourth quarter with Groves’ trey ultimately giving the Dark team the win.

The Dark team was able to gain the victory thanks to four three-pointers in the final quarter including two from Ryan’s Skylar Parkhill.

Groves and his Big Pasture teammate Conner Boydston led the Dark team with 11 points apiece.

Parkhill finished with eight points and his teammate, Dawson Tomberlin, added three points.

Among the Waurika players, Cache Arellano had eight points, while Kevin Garcia and Seth Cathey each totaled seven tallies. Turner Mora scored two points to round out the Waurika contingent.

Ryan’s Tomberlin and Lewis were each awarded a $250 scholarship by the conference.
