Round Ryan October 24 2019

0

Last Saturday at the Regional Cross Country meet in Waurika, the Ryan Cowgirls made history by winning their first Regional Team Championship.  The team is comprised of Katelyn Dabbs, Grace Stamper, Alicen Williams, Lily York, Juliet Spangler, Whittany Spangler and Lilybet Harmon.  These young ladies have achieved so many first time accomplishments that I could probably fill the entire page of the paper, so I will just hit the highlights.  Besides the team championship, Lilybet Harmon had the best individual finish in school history with a 5th place finish and a time of 13:13.  It is also the first time that Ryan has had two girls on the medal stand in the same regional.  The Cowgirls have won 6 meets this year.  From here the young ladies go on to State.  It is worth mentioning that Ryan had only one Cowboy running at Regional and although he did not qualify for State, he did run his best time of the year.  Mason Adsit is young and it will be interesting to see how far he and the Cowgirls go in the future.  Congratulations to you all.

Ryan Future Farmers of America will be walking on to the stage in Indianapolis, Indiana to receive the National Three star Chapter Award.  The three things that it takes to win this award are community work, agricultural work and building leaders.

So far I have written about students accomplishments in sports and FFA, but I have to think that the qualities they are learning will make them the leaders of the future, be it at the local level or beyond.  It is a pleasure to see young people do big things.

The ag boosters will be selling “Boo Bags” this week, if you are interested, contact any of them.(I had to ask what a boo bag is.)

The Baptist Church is going to be working this coming Sunday doing clean up work around town as mission work.  They will be working all day and if anyone wants to help you can contact any of the Baptists or I am sure it would be okay to just show up.

Books have played an important roll in my life.  From Dr. Seuss as a small child to the books I started checking out of the school library here at Ryan in the 7th grade.  I read whatever was available and I must have seemed like an odd kid to Clifford Peacocks parents, he would be playing with toys and I would be reading.  The first book that I remember checking out was a book about the racehorse, Man of War.  The horse was sold as a yearling for $5000 and became one of the biggest sports figures of the time.  At home I would read World Book Encyclopedias, novels or The Readers Digest.  As an adult, I discovered bookstores.  There was one in the mall in Duncan that was owned by an older gentleman and it was there that I discovered Robert Service, Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman.  Then when Hastings came to town, I thought that I had hit the mother lode.  I made many discoveries among the shelves and if you could not find it there then they would order it for you.  Waurika has a pretty good library and has always proven to be helpful in finding what you might want.

Chickasaw Nation Dedicates State-of-the-Art Wellness Center

0

ADA, Oklahoma – A new era in wellness opportunities for the community was ushered in as Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby, along with dozens of Chickasaw citizens, community members and dignitaries, dedicated the new Chickasaw Nation Wellness Center, Oct. 16.
The state-of-the-art facility, located at 228 Seabrook Road, is designed to meet the needs of Chickasaw families and other community members by providing wellness amenities and programs focused on improved health.

Chickasaw Nation Wellness Center is almost twice as large as its predecessor, the Chickasaw Nation Family Life Center, which is adjacent to the new facility.

Governor Anoatubby said the new facility is a direct result of the increase in awareness of the link between physical activity and overall well-being.

“Over recent years, more and more Chickasaws and employees have recognized the importance and benefits of exercise, leading to this new wellness center today, he said.
“The building houses the cutting edge in fitness technology and will usher in a new approach to how we exercise. It will help Chickasaws, and others, reach new heights of physical fitness, as well as overall health and well-being.”

“Physical fitness is the foundation for our total wellness. It is fundamental to our mission, to enhance the overall life of the Chickasaw people.”

Designed for all generations and with an emphasis on families, the Wellness Center offers cutting-edge amenities to encourage healthy habits for young people.

“It is exciting to see the future of fitness for our citizens and employees. A future in which fitness is fun and our exercise is supported by the latest science and cutting-edge technology. A future that involves the whole family,” Governor Anoatubby said.

The expansive Chickasaw Nation Wellness Center features a free weight area and weight machine area; a large studio for fitness classes; an open cardio room, a children’s exercise area, men’s and women’s locker rooms, an elevated walking track, and a hydration station.

The 25,350-square-foot facility also features a state-of-the-art interactive PRAMA studio, a circuit-based, group training system that combines three dimensional movements with cardio intervals.
The cutting-edge system combines lights and music to create an immersive and fun experience. Interactive workouts can be programmed for beginners to elite athletes.
Only three other facilities in the United States feature this system and the Ada Wellness Center is the first in Oklahoma.

The Wellness Center exercise areas are fully-equipped with state-of-the-art treadmills and elliptical machines, rowing and targeted muscle group machines, free weights and strength-training equipment.
In addition, the Wellness Center will continue to offer numerous exercise classes, from abdominal training to Zumba.
The new Wellness Center is located across the street from the Family Life Center, which will remain open for swimming pool and sauna access.
Opened in 2004, the Family Life Center marked a major milestone in the tribe’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and preventive health care services.

Also located in Ardmore, Purcell and Tishomingo, the Chickasaw Nation Wellness Centers provide education, mentoring, monitoring, incentives and access to activities to promote exercise, nutrition and overall improved health.
By providing access to equipment and services offered at the four wellness centers, the Chickasaw Nation helps build healthier communities and reduce the health disparities faced by many Native Americans.
Membership to the facilities is free for tribal citizens and employees and is also open to community members at a reasonable price.

First Annual Powder Puff Football Game

0

On Tuesday, October 8th, the WHS Band sponsored a high school powder puff football game at Cy Sloan Stadium.  The teams were made up of sophomores/seniors and freshmen/juniors.  (Due to a lack of participation, some juniors had to switch teams).  The coaches of the sophomore/senior team were senior football players Turner Mora and Edwin Garcia.  The freshmen/junior team coaches were Payton Fletcher and Hunter Wesberry.

Senior coach Edwin Garcia said, “It was pretty fun, but different due to not being on the field.”  When asked if this experience made him think about coaching in the future, he simply laughed and said “No…”.  The sophomore/senior team won with a score of 19-12.

Money raised from the gate, concessions, and shirt sales will help pay for the band trip to Disney in May.   “I think it was very successful, and everyone had a good time,” band director Everett Hodges said.  “It’ll most likely become an annual thing.”

The Inn at Gloucester stands alone on the rocky shoreline. Its seclusion suits former Boston police detective Bill Robinson, novice owner and innkeeper. As long as the dozen residents pay their rent, Robinson doesn’t ask any questions. Neither does Sheriff Clayton Spears, who lives on the second floor.

Then Mitchell Cline arrives, with a deadly new way of doing business. His crew of local killers break laws, deal drugs, and bring violence to the doors of the Inn. That’s when Robinson realizes, with the help of journalist Susan Solie, that leaving the city is no escape from the reality of evil — or the responsibility for action.

Teaming up with Sheriff Spears and two fearless residents — Army veteran Nick Jones and groundskeeper Effie Johnson — Robinson begins a risky defense. The solitary inhabitants of the Inn will have to learn, before time runs out, that their only choice is between standing together — or dying alone.

Round Ryan October 17 2019

This has been a productive season for Ryan cross country.  The young runners in Jr. High School show improvement constantly and the High School boys seem to shave time off with each passing meet, but the High School girls have taken cross country to a new level here in Ryan.  This last week the Cowgirls have won their third team title in a row, Lilybet Harmon won her third individual title in a row and the Cowgirls have had five of the top ten finishers for the third time in a row.  Next weekend the cross country team will be competing at regionals.  At 12:30 this Saturday, we will all have the opportunity to watch this team in action at Waurika.  Basketball season will be starting soon.  To be honest, I have never really followed the sport.  I’m short, slow and uncoordinated, so it is easy to figure out why it’s not my sport.  In an effort to be fair I may give it a try this season, if nothing else it will give me a chance to see the new/old gym.  The football game this week will be against long time rivals Waurika Eagles.  This rivalry spans many decades and having witnessed it from both sides, I am glad to see that the modern version is much more genteel than it was in the old days.  Come out to the game and see some good football.  Game time is at 7:30 friday night at the Bob Givens Sports Complex.  If you play your cards right you might be able to get some supper as well.

This next Sunday, October 20th from 11:00-2:00 there will be an Indian Taco dinner to raise funds for some of the community projects that are happening around Ryan.  It will be at the Sr. Citizens Center and the cost will be donations only.  I understand that they still need desserts if you would like to donate some sweets.  Take outs are available and Heather Casebolt guarantees that the food will be delicious.

If you have been paying attention, you will have noticed that dirt work is going on out on the highway across from the football field.  They are coming along with the future home of the next dollar store for this area.

Fall weather is finally upon us and it is wonderful.  Not to appear ungrateful but we could have done without that freeze the other night.  Ah well we have to take the bad with the good.  I am starting to see mums and pumpkins around town, decorating street corners and porches.  With the fall colors a, pumpkin flavored everything and the cool air, it seems that the main part of football season is here.  GO IRISH!!!

Christmas On the Trail is coming up and we will be having another meeting on the 25th of this month.  If you are interested, you can attend or you can call or come see us with your ideas.  We are still looking for vendors and volunteers.  We are adding games and activities every week.

I am sitting here listening to Adele sing about setting fire to the rain.  I’m not sure the lyrics make a lot of sense but she sure can sing.  Until next week.

Love.Project Comes to Waurika

0

Berkeley Smith (granddaughter of Nick and Rita Foster and the great granddaughter of Bobby Fitzgerald in Waurika) is on a mission. It’s called the Love.Project.

As a ten year old girl she has become aware of the needs of young women and the challenges they face in public schools when it comes to access to feminine hygiene products during the school day. It can be embarrassing for some girls to have to constantly grab their gym bag or purse before being excused to the rest room during class or perhaps needing to ask a teacher for the needed items if they were not able to bring them from home.

In order to remedy this dilemma, she came up with the idea of installing cabinets in the ladies rest rooms that could be continually stocked with feminine products and available free of charge. The idea was implemented in her school at Zanies. The idea caught on and now Berkeley is branching out to other schools in the area.

The Love.Project is now active in Zanies, Healdton, Wilson, and most recently Waurika—her mother’s hometown. Berkeley is the daughter of Jessica Smith, formerly Jessica Foster. She is a 2003 graduate of Waurika.

The project has also been approved for Tahlequah and Tupelo Oklahoma.

Niecsa Camarillo will be the project coordinator for Waurika. She is a member of the student council as the Seventh Grade Class President. Niecsa had wanted to start something similar in Waurika before she heard of the Love Project. In the mean time, Berkeley had approached Waurika and gained approval while Mrs. Jessica Cornelison was attempting to make contact with Berkely because she had seen the project on Facebook. Mrs. Cornelison says it was quite a coincidence that the two came together about the same time.

Berkely would like to see the project reach all the schools in Oklahoma and someday reach schools across the nation.

In order to raise money the project is selling t-shirts and bracelets. All the proceeds are used to purchase feminine hygiene products to be distributed throughout the schools. There will also be an Amazon wish list to allow local support of the Waurika schools project. Other fund raising efforts will be announced in the near future.

New Store in Town

0

Waurika Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony last week for the newest business in town, Survivor Arms.

The new store is a hunter’s dream come true. Owner Ben Merritt is a firearms aficionado. He loves guns. He knows Guns. It’s more than just a hobby, it’s a passion he loves to share with his customers.

He has a wide variety of guns totaling around 185 as of this writing.

Thus far business has been good. Traffic has been consistent.

It was hard  for us to complete an interview during working hours because of the number of customers who kept coming through the door. Needless to say, this is encouraging to a new business owner.

Ben Merritt is originally from Flower Mound, just outside of Lawton. Growing up he has always had a keen interest in hunting and a healthy respect for firearms. Ben is an avid hunter The deer heads mounted in the Gun Store were all from Jefferson County.

The first gun he ever owned was a 22 rifle he received for Christmas when he was twelve years old. It’s the only thing he had wanted that year. That Christmas morning he had accidentally opened a present early that contained 22 caliber bullets. At first he was disheartened because he now had the bullets but didn’t have a gun. Later that same day he received the 22 rifle as a present from his older brother. It’s a fond memory he cherishes deeply.

He and his wife, Darcy, met at Sutherlands Lumber yard. His wife was born and raised in Illinois. Her brother joined the military and was transferred to Lawton. Darci moved to Lawton in order to live closer to him. The two met at Sutherlands and have been together ever since. Ben worked for the Fire Department for 16 years. He also had fishing and lure business he started around 2008. It was very successful. He even started a fishing store in Lawton, called Top Five Tackle, that he was able to sell after it became profitable.

In 2005 Ben and his wife, Darci. moved to Waurika. They were attracted to Waurika because they wanted to raise their future family in a smaller community. Darcy taught at Waurika for a year and then transferred to Grandview. Their daughters are Kayleigh and Loralei.

Some of the many rifles on display at Survivor Arms.
There are currently around 185 guns for sale.

He recently won his bout with cancer. T-Cell Lymphoma. He contracted the disease while working as a fireman in Lawton. He originally thought he was fighting sinus infections. Because they were not clearing up with the use of antibiotics, the doctor said he needed surgery. Thankfully he was on vacation at the time and was able to get it under way immediately. During the surgery the doctor discovered he had T-Cell Lymphoma. After some aggressive treatments, he is now cancer free. Coincidently, the surgery occurred  on his 39th birthday. It also ended his firefighting career.

Although was able to retire at the age 40, his desire to remain active and productive wouldn’t allow him to just sit at the house. That’s just one of the reasons he opened Survivor Arms.

Ben Merritt inside his store, Survivor Arms, on Main Street Downtown Waurika.

Along with rifles, pistols, ammo, targets, knives, a ladies crossbow, and various accessories, he also offers items that appeal to other family members such as clothing, and home decor items. There are even toys to occupy the children as dad shops for a great hunting rifle. Along with new guns he also sells lightly used guns. In the near future he will be selling suppressors (silencers) as well. He is currently working with 8 distributers. Therefore, he has a wide variety of brand names to choose from.

Biff Eck says it’s nice to see another building downtown occupied with a business that is meeting a need. Ben knows his business.

Although he and his family have been members of the community for years, it’s nice to welcome them to the business community as well. Congratulations!
