How will Artificial Intelligence affect crime, war, justice, jobs, society and our very sense of being human? The rise of AI has the potential to transform our future more than any other technology—and there’s nobody better qualified or situated to explore that future than Max Tegmark, an MIT professor who’s helped mainstream research on how to keep AI beneficial.

How can we grow our prosperity through automation without leaving people lacking income or purpose? What career advice should we give today’s kids? How can we make future AI systems more robust, so that they do what we want without crashing, malfunctioning or getting hacked? Should we fear an arms race in lethal autonomous weapons? Will machines eventually outsmart us at all tasks, replacing humans on the job market and perhaps altogether? Will AI help life flourish like never before or give us more power than we can handle?

What sort of future do you want? ‘Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence’ empowers you to join what may be the most important conversation of our time. It doesn’t shy away from the full range of viewpoints or from the most controversial issues—from superintelligence to meaning, consciousness and the ultimate physical limits on life in the cosmos.

The world’s oil supply is vanishing, the stock market is plummeting, and the key to saving the future seems to be a baffling historical mystery. Can the NUMA crew crack it in time? ‘Sea of Greed’ is the suspenseful new NUMA Files novels from the #1 New York Times-bestselling master of adventure, Clive Cussler.

After an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico destroys three oil rigs trying to revive a dying field, Kurt Austin and the NUMA Special Projects Team are tapped by the President of the United States to find out what’s gone wrong. The trail leads them to a brilliant billionaire in the alternative energy field. Her goal is the end of the oil age; her company has spent billions developing the worlds’ most advanced fuel-cell systems. But is she an environmental hero…or a rogue genetic engineer?

The NUMA crew discovers that the oil fields are infected with bacteria that are consuming the oil before it can be pumped out of the earth–a bacteria originally lost decades ago when two submarines vanished in the Mediterranean.

With hired killers on his trail, can Kurt Austin locate a submarine that’s remained hidden for more than fifty years? And even if he can, can the biological terror that’s been unleashed be stopped?  Check out ‘Sea of Greed’ from the Waurika Public Library.

Recently added to the library’s collection is ‘The Good Fight’ by Danielle Steel.  Against the electrifying backdrop of the 1960s, Danielle Steel unveils a gripping chronicle of a young woman who discovers a passion for justice. The daughter and granddaughter of prominent Manhattan lawyers, Meredith McKenzie is destined for the best of everything: top schools, elite social circles, the perfect marriage. Spending her childhood in Germany as her father prosecutes war criminals at the Nuremberg trials, Meredith soaks up the conflict between good and evil. When her family returns to the United States, Meredith is determined to become a lawyer, despite her father’s objections.

As her grandfather rises to the Supreme Court, Meredith enlists in the most pressing causes of her time, joining a new generation of women, breaking boundaries socially, politically and professionally. But when the violence of the era strikes too close to home, her once tightly knit family must survive a devastating loss and rethink their own values and traditions. ‘The Good Fight’ by Danielle Steel is an inspiring, uplifting story of a woman changing the world as she herself is changed by it.

Dave Hill as he faces an unexpected setback when his beloved church burns down — prompting the officials at the adjoining university to try and kick his congregation off campus. Battle lines are quickly drawn between the church and the community as the reverend now finds himself at odds with his longtime friend — the president of the school. Facing a legal battle, Hill soon seeks help from his estranged brother — a big-city lawyer and atheist — in a fight to help rebuild the church.

Among the books added to the Waurika Public Library this week is ‘The Strange True Tale of Frankenstein’s creator Mary Shelley” by Catherine Reef.

On the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein, comes this riveting biography of its author, Mary Shelley, whose life reads like a dark gothic novel, filled with scandal, death, drama, and one of the strangest love stories in literary history.

The story of Frankenstein’s creator is a strange, romantic, and tragic one, as deeply compelling as the novel itself. Mary ran away to Lake Geneva with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley when she was just sixteen. It was there, during a cold and wet summer, that she first imagined her story about a mad scientist who brought a corpse back to life. Success soon followed for Mary, but also great tragedy and misfortune.

Catherine Reef brings this passionate woman, brilliant writer, and forgotten feminist into crisp focus, detailing a life that was remarkable both before and after the publication of her iconic masterpiece.

Story Time is held every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. for children and toddlers.  Each week we read stories, and have games and puzzles for the children to play with after reading.
