Waurika, Ryan Thinclads Find Going Tough at V-A Meet

0

In the final regular season meet of the year for Waurika and Ryan track squads, the competition proved to be one of the tougher outings of the season.

The Waurika boys and girls and the Ryan girls competed a week ago Tuesday in the Velma-Alma Invitational that featured schools from Class 3A to Class A.

The Lady Eagles had the best team performance in the meet with a 10th place finish and a total of 21 points. Velma-Alma won the girls’ title with 84 points. Ryan finished tied for 34th as the Cowgirls could manage only one team point.

The Waurika boys only had one placer resulting in two team points which put the Eagles 26th among the 29 teams.

Turner Mora was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 19-2.5, which was his third best performance of the season.

The Lady Eagles’ best performance came from Madison Roberson who earned a silver medal in the shot put with a toss of 36-4.

Asia Smith and Lexie Streeter continued their season-long improvement in the 3,200 meters in the meet with season-best times recorded.

Smith was third in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:11.45, while Streeter was fifth with a time of 13:23.28. Both girls are freshmen.

Streeter also placed in the high jump. Her leap of 4-4 was good enough for a tie for fifth place.

Sara Ballard rounded out the placers for the Lady Eagles with a fourth-place finish in the long jump. Her mark of 14-8.5 was her top performance in the event for the 2018 season.

The Cowgirl track squad continued its assault on the school records in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter relays.

While neither team placed in those two events, the squad still managed to set school records.

In the 3,200 meters, the Cowgirls set a new school mark for the fourth time this season. The team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Holland Carter and Juliet Spangler recorded a time of 11:27.30.

The same four girls combined for a school record in the 1,600 meter relay with a time of 4:53.76 marking the first time a Cowgirl relay squad has finished the event in under five minutes. The Cowgirls have set a school record in this event four times during 2018.

Spangler was the only Cowgirl to place in the meet finishing sixth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:40.89, which is her third best career time and the second best mark this season.

The Cowgirl sophomore also ran well in the 1,600 meters, but did not place. Her time of 6:17.47 is the best mark of the season in that event and her second best time in the event for her two-year high school career at Ryan.

Cowgirl Thinclads Set School Marks in Tough Konowa Meet

0

Three new school records were set by the Ryan Cowgirl track squad, but it resulted in no medals and no points in the tough Konowa Invitational Track Meet last Thursday at Konowa.

The Cowgirls were to have competed at Velma-Alma on Tuesday before action in the Class A Regional Track Meet at Alex on Saturday.

Field events get under way at 9:30 a.m. with the running events scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m.

The regional meet determines the participants in the Class A State Track Meet on May 4-5 at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.

At Konowa, the 3,200-meter relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Holland Carter and Juliet Spangler managed an eighth place finish, but set a school mark with a time of 11:39.68.

The time was an improvement over the school record set just the week before at the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational.

The new school record was the third time this season this squad has set a new standard in the 3,200 meter relay.

Spangler also set a new school record in the 3,200 meter run. She was eighth among 30 competitors in the event with a time of 13:37.68.

This broke her school record of 13:38.16 that was set last season at the Waurika Invitational meet. Spangler holds the five best times in the 3,200 meters in school history.

Carter set a personal best time in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:47.5, but did not place among the field of competitors from mostly Class 2A and Class 3A schools.

In the final event of the day for the Cowgirls, the 1,600-meter relay team of Harmon, York, Carter and Spangler recorded a time of 5:03.63 to best the school mark set earlier this year at Elgin.

The 1,600 meter relay team for 2018 owns four of the five best times in school history for the event.

Lady Eagles Compete In John Jacobs Invitational at OU

0

In a field that mostly consisted of Class 6A and Class 5A schools, the Waurika Lady Eagles competed in the John Jacobs Invitational at the University of Oklahoma last Friday.

The Lady Eagles and the Waurika boys’ thinclads were slated to run at Velma-Alma on Tuesday, but results were not available by press time.

The squads were to have competed in their invitational meet last Saturday, but the meet was cancelled by inclement weather.

On Saturday, the Waurika track squads will compete at Alex in the Class A Regional Track Meet.

Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., while the running events are slated to begin with the 400-meter relay preliminaries at 9:45 a.m.

The participants at the regional meet will be competing for the opportunity to represent their school at the Class A State Track Meet at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City on May 4-5.

In the meet at OU, Madison Roberson was the only Lady Eagle to place.

Roberson was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 35-4.75.

That gave Waurika two points and put them in 26th place among the 27 teams competing. Waurika was the only Class A team in the meet.

Two freshmen, Asia Smith and Lexie Streeter, competed in the 3,200 meters for the Lady Eagles. Smith was 16th with a time of 13:09.14, while Streeter was 18th with a time of 13:21.09. Both marks were the best of the season.

Smith and Streeter also competed in the 1,600 meters. Smith was 25th with a time of 6:09.41, while Streeter was right behind with a time of 6:11.21 to finish 26th. Those times were also personal best for the two Lady Eagles in 2018.

Cowgirl Softball Squad Ends Season At District Tourney

0

The Ryan Cowgirl slow-pitch softball squad dropped their first two games of the Class 2A district tournament at Central High last Thursday.

Central High, 26-4 on the year, won the district title with an 18-0 victory over Geronimo in the district finals.

The Cowgirls lost to Central High, the top-seed of the tournament and the second-ranked club in Class 2A, 17-1, in the first round and then dropped a 13-1 decision to Geronimo in an elimination game.

Geronimo, who had dropped a first-round 6-4 decision to Snyder, came back to eliminate Snyder, 12-2, to earn the right to face Central High in the finals.

The Cowgirls simply could not retire the Central High batting order in the second inning as the Lady Bronchos sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 14 runs.

The Cowgirls picked up their only run of the game in the third inning as Samantha Good belted a two-out home run. That was the only offense the Cowgirls could generate.

Central High added three more runs in the fourth inning to end the game on the run rule.

In the second game of the tournament, the Cowgirls had a first-inning threat but left the bases loaded.

In the top of the third inning the Bluejays got the bats going and scored all 13 of their runs.

The Cowgirls tried to rally as Good led off the fourth inning by reaching base and eventually scoring, but that would be the extent of the offensive threat for Ryan.

The two losses ended the slow-pitch season for the Cowgirls. Ryan finished the season with a 4-8 record under Stan Mueggenborg.

Four Ryan seniors played their final game for the Cowgirl slow-pitch softball squad – Abbie Bolin, Randi Linton, Kenzie Lewis and Cassidy Charmasson, who was sidelined most of the season with an injury.

Waurika Nine Falls To Empire In District Title Game

It was a wild district tournament for the Waurika Eagles at Central High last Thursday and Friday.

Normally, when a team scores 30 runs in two games they come out on top on both. But, when a team gives up 27 runs, they normally lose both contests.

However, Coach Glenn Howard’s squad went 1-1 in the first two games of the district tourney. The Eagles dropped a 15-5 decision to Empire in the first game of the tourney, but came back to defeat Central High, 25-12, to earn a berth in the district title game.

Empire proved to be too much for the Eagles and hand Waurika a 12-0 defeat to claim the district championship.

Empire will move on to the Class A Regional at Amber-Pocasset today and they were to have met the host school in the first round.

In Friday’s championship game, the Eagles could get nothing going at the plate.

Empire had a 3-0 lead after two innings and struck for six runs in the top of the third. The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth that ended the game after Waurika could not score in the bottom of the fifth.

In the first game of the tourney the Eagles got off to a good start. Zachary Brown got an infield hit with the bases loaded to score a run and give Waurika 1-0 lead after one inning.

The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the second on Hunter Wesberry’s two-run double, but Empire came back with a run in the bottom of the inning leaving Waurika with a 3-1 lead after two innings.

The Eagles added another run in the top of the third as Jordan Watkins led off with a triple and Gatlin Black scratched out an infield hit to score Watkins.

Empire responded with another run in the bottom of the inning, but the Eagles clung to a 4-2 lead after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Michael Bryant was hit by a pitch and came around to score to put the Eagles in front, 5-2.

Empire knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth with three runs that included a two-run double and an RBI-single.

The wheels came off in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Eagles as Empire exploded for 10 runs to end the game on the run-rule.

The Bulldogs capitalized on four walks by adding eight hits and three stolen bases. The big hits in the inning came on a bases-loaded double and a two-run double.

This set up an elimination game between the Eagles and Central High and it was a wild affair.

Central High picked up six runs in the bottom of the first inning and things looked dismal for the Eagles to advance.

In the top of the third, however, Waurika struck for seven tallies helped along by three walks in the inning – two of those with the bases loaded gave the Eagles their first two runs.

Seth Waid followed with an RBI-single. M. Bryant followed with a bases-loaded walk and Jordan Watkins had a two-run single to cap the uprising.

Central High regained the lead at 8-7 in the bottom of the third with two runs helped along by two walks and an error.

Waurika responded, however, essentially blowing the game open with a six-run uprising.

Kevin Garcia was hit by a pitch, Ben Hernandez walked and Waid followed with a two-run double.

Colton Bryant walked to load the bases and M. Bryant followed with a bases-loaded walk. Brown followed with a two-run single and Watkins belted a two-run double that scored two more to put Waurika ahead, 13-8.

But, the Eagles were far from done as they added seven runs in the top of the fifth. Big hits included Waid’s RBI-single, M. Bryant’s RBI-infield single, Brown’s two-run double and another RBI-single by Watkins.

The Eagles left the bases loaded, but had a commanding 20-8 advantage heading to the bottom of the fifth.

The Bronchos tried to make it interesting with four runs in the fifth including a sacrifice fly and a three-run home run that cut the lead to 20-12.

The Eagles put all hopes of a Central High rally with five more runs in the top of the sixth.

A run-scoring single by Watkins and an RBI-double by Black were followed by a two-run triple by Kevin Garcia. Garcia scored on an error to set the final margin.

Watkins had four hits in the contest that led to four runs batted in. Waid had three hits and three runs batted in and M. Bryant scored four runs and had three runs batted in.

The Eagles had 18 hits in the game.

The victory over the Bronchos ended a five-game losing streak by Waurika in district tournament play.

Waurika closed out the 2017 campaign with a 10-15 mark.

The future is somewhat bright for the Eagles on the diamond as the entire team returns for 2019 with the exception of M. Bryant, who played his final game for the Eagles in the district tournament.

“I was happy with our season,” said coach Glenn Howard on reflected on the season. “The team chemistry was good and I felt like we really started to put things together after spring break.

“Hopefully we can continue that improvement next season with the numbers we have returning,” added Howard, who finished his second year as the head coach of the Eagles.

Cowboy Baseballers Fall In District Tournament at Grandfield

It was a disappointing day at the Class B District Baseball Tournament at Grandfield for the Ryan Cowboys last Thursday.

The Cowgirls dropped a heart-breaking 16-14 decision to Grandfield in the first game of the tournament and were eliminated in the second game by Olustee-Eldorado, 17-2, to end the season.

Olustee-Eldorado won the district title with a 14-1 victory over Grandfield in the finals last Friday. The Diamondbacks are slated to begin the Class B Regional tournament today at Leedey where they will meet Timberlake in the first round.

The first game for the Cowboys was a bitter one. Poor pitching allowed Grandfield to build a lead and the Cowboys trailed, 16-8, heading into the seventh inning.

A furious Cowboy rally was ended with the bases loaded when a Cowboy runner was caught between third base and home.

It was the fourth meeting between the Cowboys and the Bearcats this season and the Cowboys had won the previous three meetings in dominating fashion.

The Bearcats jumped on the Cowboys in the top of the first inning as four of the first five Grandfield batters scored to carry Grandfield to a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Cowboys got a run when Tate Kimbro was hit by a pitch and Joseph Martin reached on an error. Grayson Tomberlin walked to load the bases and Kimbro scored on Dawson Tomberlin’s fielder’s choice. That trimmed the Grandfield lead to 4-1.

But, the Bearcats struck for three more runs in the top of the second. Three consecutive singles resulted in three more runs for the Bearcats.

The Cowboys got things going in the bottom of the second with walks by Pacen Wiest and Cameron Villerreal. Trey Bryant was hit by a pitch and Kimbro singled home a run. Two more runs scored when G. Tomberlin reached on an error to get Ryan to within 7-5 heading to the third.

Grandfield scored one more run in the third inning and left the bases loaded. The Cowboys kept pace with a run in the bottom of the third when Andrew Villerreal walked and scored when Bryant was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the top of the fourth, Grandfield added another run and held the Cowboys scoreless to notch a 9-6 lead.

Grandfield continued the offensive onslaught with an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-6. The Cowboys failed to score in the bottom of the inning.

The Bearcats erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth and sent 10 batters to the plate. An error, three walks, two hit batsmen and two singles led to the uprising to give Grandfield a 16-6 lead.

The Cowboys kept the game alive in the bottom of the sixth taking advantage of four walks and a two-run single by Bryant to cut the lead to 16-8 heading to the final inning.

Grandfield threatened in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded without a run.

This set up the dramatic near comeback by the Cowboys.

Martin got things started by reaching on an error and G. Tomberlin walked. After D. Tomberlin’s fly out, A. Villerreal walked to load the bases and River Williams got a walk to score Martin.

Wiest walked to score G. Tomberlin and A. Villerreal scored on C. Villerreal’s ground out. Bryant got a two-run single that scored Williams and Wiest to cut the margin to 16-13.

Kimbro walked and Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases again for the Cowboys. G. Tomberlin walked to score Bryant and Kimbro scored as D. Tomberlin reached on an error.

The final out came when Martin was trying to score on the error and was caught between third and home to end the game and the Cowboys falling, 16-15.

Kimbro and A. Villerreal each scored three runs for the Cowboys and Bryant was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.

The Diamondbacks overwhelmed the Cowboys in the second game and held the Cowboys to only two runs in the game shortened to five innings because of the run rule.

In the bottom of the second, the Diamondbacks struck for seven runs, including a three-run home run to take a 7-0 lead.

Ryan got on the board in the top of the fourth when G. Tomberlin and D. Tomberlin both reached on errors and came around to score. The Cowboys left two runners stranded, but cut the lead to 7-2.

The Diamondbacks answered, however, with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning including another three-run homer that extended the advantage to 17-2 and ended the game.

Coach Judd Matthes’ squad finishes the year with a 4-13 record.

It is the fewest wins for the Cowboys since winning only four games in 2009. The 13 losses mark the most losses by a Cowboy squad since a 15-loss season in 2006.

Five Cowboy seniors saw their final action in the district tournament – Kimbro, D. Tomberlin, Williams, C. Villerreal and Martin.

Cowboys Travel to Grandfield For District Tournament

0

It has been a tough season for the Ryan Cowboy baseball squad with the team fashioning a 4-11 record heading into today’s Class B District Tournament at Grandfield.

However, in high school baseball, every team enters the post season and the Cowboys hope to advance to regional play if they can some how catch fire and win the district title.

The Cowboys will take on the loser of the tourney’s first game – either Grandfield or top-seed Olustee/Eldorado. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Cowboys will play again at 5 p.m. and will take on the winner of the Grandfield-Olustee contest.

The Cowboys finished the regular season on Monday with a pair of losses to Geronimo and Waurika at Geronimo’s diamond.

Ryan struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first against Geronimo as Joseph Martin and Grayson Tomberlin both scored runs.

But, Geronimo pounded the Cowboys in the bottom of the inning by sending 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs to hold a 9-2 lead.

The Cowboys mounted a rally in the third inning as G. Tomberlin singled, advanced on two passed balls and scored on a wild pitch.

Andrew Villerreal walked and scored on passed ball. The Cowboys also left the bases loaded, but cut the lead to 9-4.

Geronimo extended the lead to 11-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and it could have been worse as the Bluejays left the bases loaded.

The Cowboys got things going in the top of the fourth inning as Dawson Tomberlin singled and G. Tomberlin doubled.

 A. Villerreal then blasted a two-run double to right field and after Cameron Villerreal was hit by a pitch Walter Snider had a two-run single to score both runners.

The Cowboys left two runners stranded but narrowed the lead to 11-8.

In the top of the fifth, the Cowboys managed one more run after D. Tomberlin walked and G. Tomberlin got an RBI-double down the left field line.

But the Cowboys could do no more damage and fell, 11-9.

 G. Tomberlin was 2-for-3 to pace the Cowboys at the plate.

In the second game of the night, the Cowboys suffered from fielding miscues and the inability to rattle the Waurika pitching staff.

Trailing 5-0 after three and a half innings, the Cowboys entered the bottom of the inning with consecutive walks to D. Tomberlin and G. Tomberlin. An RBI-bunt single by A. Villerreal scored D. Tomberlin.

 G. Tomberlin was able to score on a errant pickoff attempt by the Waurika catcher and the Cowboys trailed only 5-2 after four innings.

However, in the top of the fifth, Waurika exploded for five runs and the Cowboys could not mount a threat in the bottom of the fifth and fell, 10-2.

Martin was the lone bright spot at the plate for the Cowboys with two hits in the lead off position.

A week ago today the Cowboys picked up their fourth victory of the year with a 9-0 victory at Grandfield.

Tate Kimbro and Martin led off the game with a pair of singles and scored on G. Tomberlin’s two-run double.

The Cowboys added to the lead when River Williams got a base hit that scored G. Tomberlin giving the Cowboys a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Ryan continued its offensive onslaught in the top of the second inning with a six-run outburst fueled by a pair of home runs.

Trey Bryant led off the inning with a walk that was followed by Kimbro’s single. Martin reached based on an error to load the bases.

 G. Tomberlin then blasted the first pitch over the fence for a grand slam that put the Cowboys in front, 7-0.

But Ryan was not finished scoring in the inning. Williams singled and stole second and A. Villerreal sent a full-count pitch over the fence giving the Cowboys a 9-0 advantage.

Kimbro, G. Tomberlin and Williams paced with Cowboys at the plate with two hits apiece.

Meanwhile, Martin was effective on the mound despite giving up one walk and hitting two Bearcats. However, Grandfield did not pick up a base hit in the three-inning contest and Martin was credited with the win and the no-hitter.

It was the first no-hitter tossed by a Ryan pitcher since Hunter Wright did it in 2008 against Central High.

 G. Tomberlin also set a school mark by collecting six runs batted in breaking the old mark of five held by a number of players.

The last time a Cowboy had five runs batted in came in 2011 when Lucas Ninman did it against Temple and Denver Overstreet did it against Empire in the same season.

The first Cowboy (on record) to have five runs batted in during a game came in 1949 when Jerry Goza did it against Union Valley.

It was a tough outing for the Cowboys a week ago Tuesday when they traveled to Waurika and dropped a pair of contests.

Snider was the only Cowboy to get a base hit in a 17-0, three-inning loss to Dickson.

The 17 runs all came in the second inning and it ties the school record for most runs allowed in an inning done by Big Pasture in 1995 and again in 1997.

The Cowboys could muster no offense in the second game of the night either and fell to Waurika, 8-0.

The Eagles jumped out on top of the Cowboys after the first inning with a three-run uprising and the Cowboys were never in the game

The Cowboys lone hit came in the top of the second as Andrew V. reached base on a single.

Cowgirls Set to Enter District Tourney After Fletcher Tournament

0

The Ryan Cowgirl slow-pitch softball squad will take a 4-6 mark into today’s Class 2A District Tournament at Central High.

The Cowgirls will compete in the district tourney with the host school, Snyder and Geronimo. Central High is the top seed in the tournament, but the Lady Bronchos have lost three of six games in the past few days.

The Lady Bronchos still have a 23-4 record – including games played through Monday – heading into the district tournament. That is 17 more games than Ryan has played.

Geronimo and Snyder sport similar records to the Cowgirls, but have also played nearly double the number of contests as Ryan.

Action was to have gotten underway today at 11 a.m. with the Cowgirls taking on Central High followed by the Geronimo-Snyder contest.

The tournament is double-elimination, but is slated to be completed today. The winner of the tournament will advance to the regional tourney.

The regular season was difficult for the Cowgirls in more than just wins and losses.

Three of the scheduled games with opponents were cancelled because they could not field a team.

Two other scheduled games were postponed because of weather issues.

Last week the Cowgirls competed with 13 other teams in the Fletcher Invitational Tournament and played nearly as many games as they had in the entire regular season.

In the tournament’s opening contest with Verden, the Cowgirls fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could never get the big hit needed to spark a rally. The Cowgirls left 11 runners stranded.

Justyce Keith scored the only Cowgirl run in the bottom of the fourth inning in the 3-1 loss.

In the next round, the Cowgirl bats came alive early against Lawton Christian School. The Cowgirls scored three in the bottom of the first inning after LCS had put two runs on the board in the top of the inning.

The Cowgirls got on top in the second inning with a four-run uprising to hold a 7-2 lead.

The Lady Crusaders tried to rally in the fourth and fifth innings by scoring one run in each inning, but were retired in order in the top of the sixth to give the Cowgirls a 7-4 victory.

The win set up another match with Verden.

Verden took the lead in the top of the second with a run, but the Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the inning with runs by Abbie Bolin and Brooke Charmasson.

The Cowgirls gave up two runs in the top of the fourth to the Lady Tigers giving Verden a 3-2 advantage.

Ryan mounted a rally in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs and leaving two Cowgirls stranded on the bases to secure a 6-3 lead.

Verden added a run in the top of the fifth after two were out, but the Cowgirls retired the final batter before the rally could continue and picked up a 6-4 victory.

The Cowgirls were eliminated by Chickasha last Friday, 9-3, as the Lady Chicks picked up their first victory of the season.

Chickasha scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning with four tallies. The Cowgirls escaped further damage by getting the third out with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the second, the Lady Chicks added to the lead with four more runs to give the Cowgirls an 8-0 deficit.

The Cowgirls struck for two runs in the top of the third inning with Kenzie Lewis and Samantha Good getting base hits and eventually scoring to cut the margin to 8-2.

Chickasha added another run in the bottom of the fourth and the Cowgirls tried to rally in the top of the fifth, but could come up with only a single run.

Four Competitors Lead Cowgirls To Fourth Place Finish

0

Only four competitors made up the Ryan Cowgirl track squad last Friday at the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational, but those athletes turned in some impressive performances.

The Cowgirls finished fourth in the team race with 80 points – just a single point behind third-place Bray-Doyle. Empire won the meet with 138 points.

Leading the way as they have all season, the 3,200-meter relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Holland Carter and Juliet Spangler earned the gold medal with a time of 11:44.33. The time is one of the best posted in the event among Class A competitors this season.

That time broke the school record of 11:56.76 set just a couple of weeks earlier at the Cache Invitational.

The same four girls also competed in the 1,600-meter relay and the team narrowly missed setting the school mark for the second time this season.

Harmon, York, Carter and Spangler recorded a time of 5:13.59, which was good enough for second place and was just behind the school mark of 5:12.17 set just a few days before at the Elgin Invitational.

Spangler had the top individual performance by the Cowgirls with a first-place finish in the 1,600 meters. Her time of 6:30.43 set a meet record and it is the sixth best time in school history, but just off her best time of the 2018 season.

Harmon earned a bronze medal in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:52.46 and York was just behind her in fourth place with a time of 7:04.47.

Carter turned in her best performance of the season in the 800 meters and finished second in the meet with a time of 2:48.81. Harmon finished right behind Carter in the event to earn a bronze medal with a time of 2:57.79.

In the 3,200 meters, Spangler earned a third-place finish with a time of 14:33.54. York was fourth in the same event with a time of 15:19.77.

The 80 points scored by the Cowgirls is the second highest total ever in a meet. The highest point total ever for the Cowgirls is 87 points in last year’s Waurika Eight-Man Invitational.

Walker Rawlings competed in the meet for the Cowboys and he came away with points in both the shot put and discus.

Rawlings was third in the discus with a throw of 108-9 and he earned fifth place in the shot put with a toss of 37-6.

That gave Ryan eight points in the meet to finish ninth – just one point behind eighth-place Temple.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will compete Saturday in Waurika’s Red River Invitational (weather permitting) and will also be in action Tuesday at the Velma-Alma Comet Invitational.

The junior high track squads also had good performances at the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational. The Cowboys finished third in the meet with 80 points, which was nine points behind runner up Tipton and well behind team champion Fox who finished with 134 points.

The Cowgirl squad finished with 56 points which was good enough for a fifth-place tie with Fox in the team race. Bray-Doyle was the team champion with 102 points.

The Cowboys were led by the gold-medal performances of Jullian Rodriguez in the 3,200 meters and Trey Bryant in the shot put.

Rodriguez also finished second in the 1,600 meters and Bryant was second in the discus.

Tommy Self earned a silver medal in the 3,200 meters and Ethan Burden was right behind to gain a bronze medal for the Cowboys.

Caleb Perrin had a second place finish in the shot put and placed fourth in the discus.

Mason Adsit was the other medal winner for the Cowboys with a third-place finish in the 1,600 meters. Perrin was also fourth in the 1,600 meters.

Self also scored points for the Cowboys in the long jump with a fifth place finish.

For the Cowgirls, Katlynn Dabbs earned three gold medals in the meet. She was the top runner in the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.

Alicen Williams also earned a silver medal in the 3,200 meters and a bronze finish in the 800 meters. She also scored points with a fifth-place finish in the 1,600 meters.

Whittany Spangler rounded out the medal winners for the Cowgirls with a bronze medal finish in the 3,200 meters. She was also fourth in the 800 meters.

Eagle Thinclads Sweep Three Relays to Win Waurika Meet Title

….Lady Eagles Earn Runner Up Honors Led By Smith’s Performance

Behind three gold medal performances in the relays, the Waurika boys’ track squad claimed the team title in the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational held last Friday at the local track.

The Eagles rolled up 141 points by taking the title in three of the four relays in the meet. Fox was the runner up with 119 points.
