In the first game Waurika will take on Empire at 3:30 p.m. and no matter the outcome will take on the host school following the first game around 5:30 p.m.

The tournament is double-elimination and two losses by the Eagles in today’s action would end the Waurika nine’s season.

In the final days of the regular season, the Eagles were able to get a pair of wins over Ryan and a victory over Geronimo. The Eagles dropped a contest to Dickson and had last Friday’s contest with Wilson rained out.

Coach Glen Howard’s crew will take a 9-13 record into today’s tournament.

The Eagles picked up their eighth and ninth wins of the season Monday night in a three-way matchup with Ryan and Geronimo at Geronimo.

The Eagles defeated Ryan, 10-2, and then held off Geronimo for a 5-3 victory.

Last Friday’s scheduled game with Wilson was rained out.

In Monday’s action, Waurika took advantage of eight Ryan errors for the victory.

The game was scoreless after two innings, but Waurika erupted for four runs in the top of the third inning.

Bryson Hernandez reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an errant pickoff attempt.

Michael Bryant and Zachary Brown both walked and an RBI-single by Austin Dyer scored Bryant.

The Eagles scored two more runs on another Ryan miscue with Brown and Dyer scoring to give Waurika a 4-0 lead.

Waurika added a run in the top of the fourth when Colton Bryant reached on an infield single and stole second. A ground out by Hernandez pushed across Bryant for a 5-0 Waurika lead.

The Cowboys managed two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Eagles responded with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the win.

Dyer led off the inning with a single and Edwin Garcia was hit by a pitch. Dyer scored as C. Bryant reached on an error and Garcia and C. Bryant scored on another Cowboy fielding error to make the score 8-2.

Hunter Wesberry reached base on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Hernandez followed with a single and Brown got an RBI on a fielder’s choice to close out the Waurika offensive onslaught.

Dyer and Hernandez led the Eagles with two hits apiece.

In the second game Monday, the Eagles got an outstanding pitching performance from Brown and Wesberry recorded a save on the mound for Waurika.

The Eagles scored first in the top of the second inning as Brown reached on a single and stole second. He scored on Gatlin Black’s run-scoring single and the Eagles got another run on a Bluejay error to gain a 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the third inning, the Eagles added another run on somewhat controversial play. Wesberry reached on an error and advanced to second after M. Bryant walked.

Wesberry scored from third after Bryant was hit by a ball trying to advance to third. This gave Waurika a 3-0 lead.

Geronimo finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with a single tally helped along by an Eagle error to cut the lead to 3-1 after three innings.

The Eagles added another run in the fourth inning after the Geronimo center fielder could not make a play on Dyer’s fly ball. An infield single by Seth Waid drove Dyer home giving Waurika a 4-1 lead.

Geronimo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits, two singles and an error to cut the Eagle advantage to 4-3.

Waurika added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning as three consecutive singles the last of which came from M. Bryant that drove in Wesberry for a 5-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth Wesberry came on to retire the Bluejay batters in order to seal the win.

Waid and Wesberry each had two hits to pace the Eagles at the plate.

A week ago Tuesday, the Eagles scored an 8-0 victory over Ryan after dropping a 12-1 decision to Dickson in a three-way contest at the Eagle diamond.

The Comets score three runs in the first, fourth more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second.

The Eagles managed a run in the bottom of the second as Brown got an infield single and moved to second on Dyer’s single. Watkins reached on an error and Payton Fletcher then got an RBI-infield single to give Waurika the only run of the game.

Dickson added five more runs in the top of the fourth inning and the game ended by the run rule after the Eagles could not score in the bottom of the inning.

Dyer took the loss on the mound for the Eagles.

In the second game for Waurika, the Eagles jumped out on top of Ryan after the first inning with a three-run uprising.

Wesberry singled and scored on Brown’s RBI-single. Brown advanced on a stolen base and some defensive indifference by the Cowboys sent him to third. Dyer picked up a walk and Watkins’ base hit got a two-RBI single for the Eagles.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to add to the lead. C. Bryant led off the inning with a walk and Hernandez singled. C. Bryant scored on Wesberry’s ground out.

Black reached on an error that enabled Hernandez to cross the plate and make the score 5-0 after two innings.

In the third inning the Eagles got another run as Watkins singled and stole second and third. Watkins scored on a passed ball putting Waurika ahead, 6-0, after three innings.

The game ended in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles scored two more runs with M. Bryant scoring on a wild pitch and reaching on a base hit and Wesberry scoring after reaching on an error.

Watkins’ two hits paced the Eagles at the plate, while Brown tossed a one-hitter to get the win on the mound.

Cowgirl Softball Squad Picks Up Pair of Victories

It has been a busy few days for the Ryan Cowgirl slow-pitch softball squad after the team has struggled to get on the diamond because of weather and cancellations.

The Cowgirls went 2-3 in the stretch of games with two wins over Big Pasture and losses to Thackerville, Geronimo and Grandfield.

In the first game with Big Pasture, the Cowgirls captured a 4-0 victory over the Lady Rangers.

Two singles by Justyce Keith and Brooklyn Charmasson helped the Cowgirls score two runs in the top of the second.

Cassy Charmasson reached base in the top of the third and came around to score after a base hit by Samantha Good gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the Cowgirls added to the lead as Randi Linton and came around to score to put the Cowgirls up, 4-0.

B. Charmasson picked up the shut out win for the Cowgirls and survived seven stranded base runners by the Lady Rangers.

Later the same day the Cowgirls dropped a 14-2 decision to Thackerville as the Lady Wildcats scored five runs in the first inning and six more in the second inning.

Thackerville added to the lead in the top of the third with three more runs for a 14-0 lead.

The Cowgirls were able to scratch for two runs in the bottom of the third, but the game ended on the run-rule.

Sadie Guzman led off the bottom of the third with a walk and scored, while C. Charmasson also walked and scored. The Cowgirls threatened for more runs to try to keep the game alive, but left the bases loaded.

The Cowgirls took on Geronimo and Big Pasture a week ago Tuesday split the two contests.

Geronimo blasted the Cowgirls for six runs in the first inning and coasted to an 11-1 victory over Ryan in just four innings.

Keith accounted for the Cowgirls’ lone run in the game.

The Cowgirls rebounded from the loss to pick up a 6-3 victory over Big Pasture.

The Lady Rangers took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but the Cowgirls picked up three tallies in the top of the third to take the lead.

Madison Rhodes, Kenzie Lewis and Linton all reached base for the Cowgirls and scored. The Cowgirls also stranded two runs in the inning.

The Cowgirls added to the lead in the top of the sixth as Lewis, Good and Guzman each circled the bases for Ryan giving the Cowgirls a 6-1 lead.

Big Pasture managed two runs in the bottom of the inning as seven batters came to the plate, but the Cowgirls ended the rally.

Last Thursday the Cowgirls got into a slugfest with Grandfield and dropped a 21-10 decision.

Ryan jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Lewis and Linton reached base and scored. Abbie Bolin added a basehit, but the Cowgirls could not do any more damage.

Grandfield answered in the bottom of the inning as the first four batters came around to score and the Lady Bearcats added another run for a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

The Cowgirls actually regained the lead in the top of the second inning as they exploded for eight runs.

Eleven Cowgirls came to the plate in the inning and the first eight batters scored. Keith, C. Charmasson, Rhodes, Savannah Lashley, Keith, Linton, Good and Guzman all scored in the inning to give Ryan a 10-5 lead.

The Bearcats responded, however, with 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 17-10 lead.

The Cowgirls could get nothing started in the third inning, while the Lady Bearcats added four more runs for a 21-10 lead heading to the top of the fourth inning.

The Cowgirls tried to extend the game, but left the bases loaded and the game ended on the run rule.

Ryan is now 2-4 on the year heading into competition at the Fletcher Tournament that begins play today (Thursday).

The Cowgirls were to have met Verden in the first game.

The host school, Verden, Chickasha, Big Pasture and Empire are among some of the teams in the tourney.

District Assignments Made for Baseball And Softball

It does not seem possible that the spring sports slate is getting closer to the post-season.

With all the crazy weather and canceled events, Ryan or Waurika’s baseball squads and Ryan’s slow-pitch softball squad have been able to get into a routine.

However, the district tournament assignments for both sports were released last Friday by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association with tournaments set for next week.

Ryan’s slow-pitch softball squad, which is 2-3 heading into today’s competition at the Fletcher Tournament, will have a tough district tourney.

The Cowgirls will travel to Central High and the Lady Bronchos are currently ranked second in Class 2A. Geronimo and Snyder will join the Cowgirls and Central High for the tournament.

Pairings and the exact time of the tournament, which should be conducted in one day, will be announced.

Ryan’s baseball squad will also hit the road for the Class B district tournament. Grandfield will serve as the host site and the Cowboys, Bearcats and Olustee/Eldorado will battle for a spot in the regional tourney.

Waurika has been assigned to the Class A district tourney to be hosted by Central High. The Eagles, Empire and the host school will battle for a right to advance to the regional tourney the following week.

The district baseball tournaments will begin next Thursday unless the schools agree to a different schedule.

Assignments for the regional track meet will be released on April 19 but it is likely Ryan and Waurika will be assigned to the regional meet scheduled for Alex on April 28.

Smith, Mora Lead Waurika Thinclads at Alex Invitational

Turner Mora and Asia Smith each placed in two events to pace Waurika’s performance at the Alex Invitational a week ago today.

In the team competition, the Eagles finished tied for eighth place with Oklahoma School For the Deaf. Both teams had 14 points. Cordell won the meet with 146 points.

The Lady Eagles finished 10th in the team race with 27.5 points, while Rush Springs and Cordell tied for the team title with 101 points each.

Mora helped the Eagles’ point total by placing in the 400 meters and the long jump.

Mora circled the track in 55.76 to earth fifth place in the 400 meters. He managed a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.5.

Waurika’s other points came in the 3,200 meter and 1,600 meter relays. Both squads finished fifth.

The Eagles turned in a time of 9:49.32 in the 3,200 meter relay and posted a time of 3:52.64 in the 1,600 meter relay.

Smith, a freshman, placed fourth in both the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters to pace the Lady Eagles.

Smith’s time in the 1,600 meters was 6:29.55 and she turned in a time of 13:38.12 in the 3,200 meters.

Lexie Streeter, also a freshman for the Lady Eagles, finished fifth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:09.89.

Madison Roberson finished with a silver medal in the shot put. Her throw of 33-0 was her best performance of the season.

Sara Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles by tying for fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 3-10.

The 3,200 meter relay team for the Lady Eagles accounted for the other team points. The squad finished fourth with a time of 12:39.57.

Other Waurika athletes competing at Alex included Kevin Garcia, Octavio Gomez, Gustavo Gomez and Nick Alvarado for the Eagles and Kaci Reynolds, Dallas Fristoe, Madison Christian and Brooke Williams for the Lady Eagles.

The next action for the Waurika track squads will be tomorrow when the Eagles will host their eight-man invitational competition. The meet begins at 9 a.m. at the Waurika track.

Ryan Tournament Changes Format After Temple Drops Out

Cowboys get one win in tourney and one regular season win.

The fifth annual Cowboy Classic baseball tournament had to make a last-minute switch from pool play to a five-team, double-elimination format after Temple dropped out of the tourney.

Thackerville claimed the tournament title with a 14-4 victory over Waurika in the championship game.

The tournament was played last Thursday and Friday which was a wise move considering last Saturday’s frigid weather.

For the Ryan Cowboys it was a one-day appearance in their own tournament.

The Cowboys opened the tournament with a 7-5 loss to Big Pasture but managed a 10-3 victory over Grandfield in an elimination game.

In the next round, however, Waurika eliminated the Cowboy nine with a 10-3 victory.

The Eagles advanced to the championship game by defeating Big Pasture, 6-4, after Thackerville had handed Big Pasture its first loss of the tournament.

For the Cowboys, the loss to the Rangers was a tough won considering Ryan had managed a 15-13 victory over Big Pasture earlier in the week.

In the tournament contest with Big Pasture, the two squads ended the first inning tied at 1-1. The Rangers, however, exploded for six runs in the top of the third inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

The Cowboys were able to hold Big Pasture scoreless the rest of the way, while picking up two runs in the fourth and one run each in the fifth and sixth inning to draw within 7-5, but the time limit ended the game after six innings.

The victory over Grandfield was also shortened by the time limit, but the Cowboys scored in every inning to secure the win.

A double by Joseph Martin and a walk by Grayson Tomberlin helped give the Cowboys a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the second inning, Andrew Villerreal reached on a walk to open the inning and after two were out, Walter Snider got an RBI-single and he eventually came around to score giving the Cowboys a 3-0 advantage.

Grandfield cut the margin to 3-1 with a single tally in the top of the third inning, but the Cowboys answered the modest Bearcat rally with three more runs in the bottom of the third.

G. Tomberlin and Tate Kimbro led the inning off with a pair of singles and them Dawson Tomberlin picked up a two-run double. Tomberlin came around to score after a Grandfield error to extend the Cowboys’ lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, G. Tomberlin tripled after one out and then scored before the Bearcats could retire the Cowboys. Ryan now led, 7-1, heading to the fifth inning.

In the top of the fifth inning the Bearcats produced three singles coupled with an error and three stolen bases accounted for two runs cutting the lead to 7-3.

The Cowboys ended all hopes of another rally by Grandfield by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning. Those runs came without the benefit of a base hit thanks to two walks, three stolen bases and two Grandfield errors that put the final score at 10-3.

This set up an elimination game between Waurika and the Cowboys.

The Cowboys got off to a good start in the top of the first inning as D. Tomberlin and Martin led off by reaching base to give Ryan a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning, however, striking for six runs. Bryson Hernandez, Hunter Wesberry, Zachary Brown and Gatlin Black led off the inning by reaching base and all four came around to score.

Austin Dyer and Michael Bryant got on base after one out and eventually scored before the end of the inning to give the Eagles a 6-2 advantage.

After a scoreless second inning, the Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning sending eight batters to the plate.

Jordan Watkins and Dyer led off the inning by getting on base and Colton Bryant got a two-run single to put the Eagles in front 8-2. The Eagles left two men stranded before the end of the inning.

The Eagles were not finished, however, sending eight more batters to the plate in the fourth inning. Watkins and Dyer both got one-out walks and eventually came around the score to give the Eagles a 10-3 lead after four innings.

In the fifth inning, the Eagles scored three more runs and scored a run-rule victory over the Cowboys. Brown, Black and Dyer scored runs for the Eagles to seal the victory.

Dyer finished the game with four runs scored after reaching base three times on walks.

This set up another elimination game for the Eagles and Waurika responded to the challenge by scoring a 6-4 victory over Big Pasture earning a spot in the championship game against Thackerville.

The Wildcats were too much for the Eagles and earned the title with a run-rule victory. It was the second invitational tournament the Wildcats have won this season.

Earlier in the week the Cowboys picked up their second win over the season at Big Pasture.

Ryan got off to a 2-0 lead after one inning when Martin reached base and after a G. Tomberlin single and an error, Martin put the first run on the board for the Cowboys.

G. Tomberlin eventually scored on a two-out, RBI-single by River Williams.

Things got really interesting in the bottom of the third inning as the Rangers scored five runs with only one hit. A Ryan error and three walks helped the Rangers snag the lead.

The Cowboys regained the lead in the top of the fourth exploding for eight runs to hold a 10-5 lead.

Singles by Martin, C. Villerreal and A. Villerreal along with four bases on balls and an error accounted for the five Cowboy runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rangers cut into the lead with three runs of their own. Two errors and two walks helped the Rangers cut the Ryan lead to 10-8 heading into the fifth inning.

Big Pasture took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs. An error, a fielder’s choice, a walk, a single and a double contributed to the rally that put the Rangers in front, 11-10, heading to the sixth inning.

Ryan answered with four runs in the top of the sixth with three walks and a single by Martin helping produce the go-ahead runs. The Cowboys also left the bases loaded but Ryan held a 14-10 lead.

After holding Big Pasture scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Cowboys managed another run in the top of the seventh inning. Martin was hit by a pitch and eventually scored giving the Cowboys a 15-10 lead.

Big Pasture tried to rally as the Rangers scored two runs with one out, but the Cowboys were able to get the final two outs.

D. Tomberlin and A. Villerreal each paced the Cowboys at the plate with two hits apiece. Martin scored four runs for the Cowboys in the contest which ties the school record for most runs scored by an individual in a game.

Ryan was to have met Waurika and Dickson on Tuesday on the Eagles’ home diamond.

Today the Cowboys travel to Grandfield for a contest with the Bearcats and on Friday the Cowboys are scheduled to host Alex on Larry Ninman Field at the Bob Givens Sports complex.

The Cowboys close out the regular season Monday at Geronimo with a three-way matchup with the Blue Jays and Waurika.

Cowgirls’ Carter Claims Gold Medal at Elgin Invitational

Despite having only five competitors the Ryan Cowgirls finished in fifth place in the tough Elgin Invitational Track Meet last Thursday.

The Cowgirls amassed 68 points in the small school division which consisted of schools from Class 3A to Class A. Hollis, a Class 2A school, won the meet with 135 points.

And, this small contingent of Cowgirl thinclads had a memorable day in the meet that replaced the canceled Stratford meet that was originally on the Cowgirl track schedule.

Holland Carter led the Cowgirls with a gold medal in the 800 meters. Her time of 3:01.3 was impressive considering the windy conditions.

Lilybet Harmon earned a bronze medal in the 800 meters with a time of 3:15.27.

The other highlight of the day came in the 1,600 meter relay. While the Cowgirls managed only a fourth place finish in the event, the squad set a school record with a time of 5:12.17, besting the previous school record mark of 5:15.0 set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference meet.

The 1,600 meter relay team consists of Carter, Harmon, Lily York and Juliet Spangler.

The same group of girls earned a silver medal in the 3,200 meter relay with a time of 12:22.37 – which was well short of the school mark this relay team set earlier this season at Cache.

The distance races are definitely the strength of the Cowgirls this season as Spangler and York added to the point total with high finishes in the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters.

Spangler earned a silver medal in both events. Her time of 6:28.25 is behind her own school record time of 6:16.82 and is the fifth best in school history.

York was right behind her teammate and earned a bronze medal with a time of 6:31.45, which put her at sixth on the school record chart in the 1,600 meters.

Spangler and York also finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,200 meters. Spangler turned in a time of 14:15.37, while York finished the race with a time of 14:57.55. Both were well back of the winning time of 13:12.65.

This meet had a unique format in that participants from schools in all classes ran together in each event. The 3,200 meter relay team actually ran a better time than the Lawton MacArthur and Lawton High squads.

The 68 points scored by the team in the meet was the second highest point total by a Cowgirl track team in school history.

The Cowgirls will try to improve on their early season performances tomorrow (Friday) at the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational Meet. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., while the running events will get under way at 10 a.m.
