It’s been a great week, but, this is the first week that we’ve not been blessed with a bit of rain.  Maybe this week, we will have a better opportunity for some, if the Lord is willing.  The days are now nearly constant for highs in the 90s.  I try to get any outdoor work that needs to be taken care of done early in the mornings.  It doesn’t take long for our seasons to pass, anymore.

This past week has been a busy week for most folks around Ryan.  Brionna and I went up to Waurika to Doc’s Place to eat dinner Thursday evening.  Brionna had fried shrimp and I had a grilled pork chop with peach chutney.  It was a very good meal. 

Saturday evening, we attended the Ryan graduation ceremony/  I was surprised that they didn’t have a guest speaker, but, they don’t always have 2 Valedictorians and 2 Salutatorians either.  Take Kimbro and McKenzie Lewis shared the spots for the Valedictorian of the class, and Dawson Tomberlin and Cara Williams, shared the spots for the Salutatorian. Each one of them gave a speech.  Cara Williams, along with her speech, played her guitar and sang a song.  She is very talented young lady.  Congratulations to all of the Ryan graduates.  Good luck to all of you and God be with you all.

Sunday was Mother’s Day and Brionna and I made it to church.  Edna had commented in Sunday School, that she hoped someone from her family would be there at church with her.  She did indeed have both Natalie and Leslie with her husband, David. After church, I decided not to go home to cook for use, but, instead, headed to eat out at Bill’s.  It seemed like we had to park about a half mile away from the restaurant, but, they were packed.  We stood outside for a while, then went inside the entryway and stood for another while.  I saw Ramona Bryant and got to talk to her for a little while.  She is living in Duncan at an independent living facility that is only about a year old.  She really does like it where she is.   We also ran into Joyce and Lynn Plant while we were standing outside.  They had their kids and some of their families there, too.  We finally got to sit on the benches and visit for a little bit.  I told Joyce that you have to be really hungry for Bill’s fish to have to wait for as long as we did.  Our final wait was about an hour and a half.  It was all worth it, though.  The fish and hush puppies and the cole slaw, were all delicious.  Then, to top off our meal, they brought all the mothers out a chocolate covered strawberry for dessert. I imagine most restaurants were pretty crowded with families, trying to get Moms out of the kitchens.

We didn’t get over to see Mom as I had originally planned.  I had a cold and didn’t want to get around Mom or the other residents in the home.  I called her and wished her a Happy Mother’s Day, though.  My brother, Mel, took her out to eat there in Nocona at Del Rios.  He said she really enjoyed her outing.

Our kids will be having their last day of school this Friday.  Ya’ll have a great summer!

Kim’s news for this week:

This week I was not alone, my friend, Brionna, was home.  She went with Foxy and me to see Ruffy Tuffy. That wasn’t all–me, Foxy, and her played ball.

Ruffy Tuffy got hurt in his stall, but, he’ll be okay after all.

TERRAL CITY HALL NEWS- Our regular city council meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018 at the City Hall Meeting Room beginning at 6:00 p.m.

COMMUNITY CENTER ANNUAL DINNER – The Terral Community Center will have its fund raising dinner on Saturday, February 10th at the Terral Community Center from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. We will be serving Chili, Beans, Stew & Cornbread. Dessert and Drink will be included. Cost will be DONATION ONLY!  We will also have carry out beginning 4:00 p.m by calling 940-366-4501. As always we will be asking our local cooks to help with donated desserts.  All proceeds will go to the upkeep of the Terral Community Center.

Ace Dyer Serves as Principal for the Day

Ace Dyer served as “Principal” for a day this past Monday. He won the opportunity as a part of a drawing during the Elementary School Carnival.

He turns seven today!

It was the luck of the draw at the recent Elementary Carnival that allowed him to serve in the highest office of the Elementary School in Waurika. 

It’s something that only happens once a  year. 

Dyer said they began the day by greeting the kids with Principal and newly appointed Superintendent Cody Simmons. 

After that they went to the gym and had Rise and Shine.

Dyer and Simmons then enjoyed a great breakfast together. 

After their morning meal they went around looking at things that may need improvement at the school. 

He said they looked for cracks in the walls and the condition of the ceiling tiles. 

Dyer said he and Mr. Simmons had to go to the store to get a new radio. 

Dyer looked comfortable setting behind the big desk. He was dressed in a pressed long sleeve shirt and a tie. 

He is in the first grade and its his only time to ever get to serve as Principal for the day. Dyer said he was very lucky because this is the last year that Mr. Simmons will be the Elementary Principal. 

When he grows up he may be a rancher and a principal. Although he said the principal has a lot of work to do. 

At the end of the day they made announcements to all the students. 

It was a great day for Dyer, it’s one he will never forget. 

Waurika Development Trust Meets to Discuss Ideas for Waurika’s Future

On Monday February 12 , The Waurika Development Trust invited a group of local residents to discuss ways we could make Waurika a more attractive place to live.  The group will take the discussion to various clubs and organizations over the next several months for input and will report back to the Trust with a recommended plan of action. Craig Williams from Williams Landscape in Lawton was invited to talk about his suggestions for some improvements the group could do now that would make an impact and also provided some ideas for longer-term and larger improvements.

Jacob Eck and Lauren Nitschke represented the Waurika Chamber of Commerce to discuss a grant application they are preparing that would bring a group of architecture students from OU to Waurika to make recommendations for longer-term improvements to Main Street.

The group is eager to meet with the community and get additional suggestions and input.

Ryan Graduates Honored

 Oklahoma Rural Rehabilitation Corporation (ORRC), located in Stillwater, has completed processing scholarships to Oklahoma farm and rural students who graduated from high school this spring. Of the 248 applications received, 168 scholarships totaling $75,400 were approved to assist students entering college or a technical school in Oklahoma. ORRC began its scholarship program in 1968 and a cumulative total of over $3.7 million has been awarded to students.

Oklahoma Rural Rehabilitation Corporation is a non-profit corporation established by the federal government in 1934 to assist farmers and rural communities.

The corporation has been self-sustaining since then by investing in loans to assist farmers and ranchers. Profits from these loans have been used for the scholarship program,

 a community development grant program, grants to the Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program and other programs to assist farmers, ranchers and rural communities. 

The ORRC is assisted with its scholarship program by the USDA Farm Service and USDA Rural Development Agencies, as well as various participating banks. We at ORRC would like to extend sincere thanks to these agencies for their participation in organizing the collection of applications and distribution of scholarship funds.

Christmas Angel Tree

There is an Angel Tree set up at City Hall and there will also be another Angel Tree located at Shelton’s Grocery the week after Thanksgiving. You can pick a name off of the tree and bring the gift back unwrapped. If you know anyone needing an application for a name to be put on the tree, there are applications at The Jefferson County DHS office in Waurika and the deadline for these applications is December the 18th. The Angel Tree is set up by the Waurika Police Department, Shelton’s Grocery and other local businesses. The deadline to turn in the gifts is December the 18th. You can also make cash donations for the Angel Tree at Waurika City Hall, The Quik Mart, and Shelton’s Grocery. If you have any questions please call Chris Bayless at 580-313-1051.

 On Saturday, June 2nd, the FRIENDS of the Waurika Public Library are having a used book sale.  For $3 we’ll have bags that you can fill with books!  DVDs will also be for sale for $1 each.  Proceeds will go to help programs and activities at the library.

Summer is right around the corner!  The Waurika Public Library invites elementary-aged children, those who will be entering 1st grade through 5th grade in September, to attend this year’s Summer Reading Program. A variety of weekday programming will be offered and lunch will be provided daily for any school-aged child.

The theme this year is Libraries Rock!  Programming will run each weekday, June 4-July 27 with the exception of the July 4 holiday.  Reading and activities will be from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m.  Children attending the Summer Reading Program must be picked up by their parent/guardian at noon each day.

Children must be registered to attend. For more information or registration forms, visit the Waurika Public Library or call 580.228.3274.

The Summer Reading Program is free to attend.  The public library, community organizations and individuals care about your children. Together we raised funds to offer daily educational programs and week-day lunches to keep your children’s minds and bodies fed this summer. Whether keeping track of the amount of time your children spend reading or the number of books they’ve read this summer, children who attend the Summer Reading Program keep their minds active and enter the new school year ready to succeed.

Well, we have had a blessed week, weather wise this past week.  We have again seen extreme temperatures from the 90s one day to the 50s the next.  Winds that would nearly blow you away. We nearly had some rain Friday morning.  I woke up and it was lightning, but, when I turned the light on outside, the concrete was dry.  Maybe this week we will have better chances of precipitation coming possibly Friday and Saturday.  I am hoping that we won’t see anymore freezing temperatures until next fall.  I got out yesterday and mowed my weeds.  I didn’t see any grass among what I was mowing.  The plant with the little purple flowers was abundant, but, it looked like it was turning brown.  

I went to Amarillo Saturday morning and the winds were blowing at more than 30 mph.  I made it over to see Randy and made it back home again safely Saturday evening.  

There are 2 wedding showers scheduled this month.  Morgan Good’s shower is Sunday, April 29, from 2-4 pm at the Ryan Church of Christ.  They are registered at Dillard’s, Target, and Walmart.  Also, on April 22, at 2:00 pm at the Ryan First Baptist Church, Larimey Curtis and his fiancee. There is a hostess box for each of the 2 couples at the Ryan Drug Store if folks would like to just put in some money for either of the couples.

The Ryan food bank will be distributing food on April 28th.  

We received news from our Methodist District Superintendent last week, that our pastor, Sandy Shepherd is going to be assigned  up around the Tulsa area to two new churches for her.  She expressed a need to be relocated if possible, to be closer to her mother, that has had some concerning health issues.  We are sad to lose her, but we are certainly glad that she will be in a location that will get her closer to her mom.  Mark, her husband, has been quite an asset in our church, too.  He has sung some solos on several occasions, and is certainly blessed with a beautiful voice.  Our church doesn’t know at this time what pastor will be assigned to our church.  We will be in prayer for  receiving our pastor, whomever they assign us.

Cowboys don’t cry, Ride Foxy ride.

Her favorite pastime of all is playing with her silly-ball.  She can raise her paw and praise God!

Waurika and Ryan Thinclads Have Good Day at Waurika Meet

 The weather for last Saturday’s Red River Invitational Track Meet hosted by Waurika was some of the best of the season and the results for both Ryan and Waurika reflected the better conditions.

Waurika girls finished second in the meet with 100 points behind Atoka’s 122 points.

Ryan’s girls finished fourth with 68 points well behind third-place Frederick that finished with 96 points.

Walters took the team title in the boys’ division with a dominating performance. The Blue Devils racked up 187 points outdistancing Riverside Indian School that finished with 148 points.

Waurika finished third in the team standings with 91 points and Ryan finished eighth in the 14-team meet with 33 points.

One of the highlights of the meet came in the 3,200 meter relay where Ryan and Waurika continued to battle for supremacy in the event as they have throughout this season.

This time, it was the Ryan Cowgirl squad of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter that took first-place honors with a time of 10:52.01. The time is a new school record for Ryan in the event.

Waurika managed second place in the event with a time of 10:58.70. Asia Smith, Lexie Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora ran for the Lady Eagles in the event. It was easily the best time of the season turned in by this squad.

Waurika had three other relay teams to place in the meet – the primary factor for the Lady Eagles to earn runner up team honors.

The 800 meter relay team of Kaci Reynolds, Savana Ritter, Hope Cummings and Sara Ballard finished sixth with a time of 2:09.57.

That time was two seconds behind Ryan’s team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter who turned in a time of 2:07.28 to take fifth place.

The 400 meter relay team of Dallas Fristoe, Ritter, Reynolds and Ballard ran fifth for the Lady Eagles and turned in a time of 59.54.

In the 1,600 meter relay the Cowgirls and Lady Eagles battled again, but this time Frederick posted the winning time with the Cowgirl team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter finishing second with a time of 4:53.03 which is a new school mark.

The Lady Eagles finished fifth with the team of Smith, Streeter, F. Roberson and Mora posting a time of 5:10.28.

In the individual events, Madison Roberson had an outstanding day for the Lady Eagles as she earned two gold medals in the shot put and discus. Her shot put mark was 37-2, while the toss of the discus was 106-5.

Mora also won a gold medal for the Lady Eagles in the long jump with a leap of 16-2. Ballard earned a bronze medal with a jump of 15-0.

The other gold medal winner for the Lady Eagles was Smith in the 1,600 meters. She posted a time of 6:22.02 and Streeter was not far behind earning third place with a time of 6:28.37.

In the 800 meters, Smith finished fifth with a time of 2:46.71. Mora was sixth with a mark of 2:49.36 and F. Roberson finished eighth with a time of 3:11.99.

Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles as she finished seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 13.86.

The Cowgirls did not have any titlist in the individual events, but Spangler did earn a silver medal in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:14.33.

Harmon and Carter both placed for the Cowgirls in the 800 meters. Harmon was third with a timeof 2:44.04 and Carter was just behind in fourth place with a time of 2:44.87.

Spangler finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:39.24.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls was Katlyn Dabbs in the 300 meter hurdles with an eighth place finish. She recorded a time of 62.69. She is the first Cowgirl to score points in this event since the 1997 Southern Eight Conference track event.

The Eagles had another impressive day in the relay races. Waurika placed in every relay and won the 1,600 meter relay.

The team of Kevin Garcia, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano turned in a time of 3:42.98 to earn the gold medal just four-hundredths of a second behind the best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Arellano, Bryant, Garcia and Bryson Hernandez finished second with a time of 9:18.58. It was Waurika’s best time in the event this season.

The 400 meter relay team of Garcia, Tu. Mora, Nic Alvarado and Bryant was third with a time of 59.54.

The same quartet also took third in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:36.81. This was the best time of the season for the Eagles in this event.

Tu. Mora also won a gold medal in the 400 meters with his time of 53.62. He was the only gold medal winner for the Eagles on the day.

In the discus, Aaron Nitka finished fourth with a toss of 113-10, while Alvarado managed to finished fifth in the 100 meters with 11.5. Hernandez rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a seventh place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:32.44.

The Cowboys did not have any teams entered in the relays during the meet, but did have several outstanding marks in some of the individual events.

Walker Rawlings topped the performers for the Cowboys in the meet with two gold medals. He was first in the shot put with a toss of 41-10 and also first in the discus with a throw of 125-10.

Travis Fristoe had some impressive performances for the Cowboys. His mark of 19-3 in the long jump earned him fifth place and is the best mark in that event by a Ryan athlete since the 1985 Healdton invitational when Justin Savage posted a 20-6 jump.

Fristoe was also fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.25.

The Cowboy senior was also fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.86, while Landen Alexander also scored in the event for the Cowboys by finishing eighth with a time of 66.92.
