April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

0

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. One of the goals of Women’s Haven is to bring awareness to the community on Sexual Assault. Women’s Haven will have a table at the Wauirka Rattle Snake Round-Up on Saturday April 14th . We will have information on services we provide and information  on sexual assault.

For the kids, we will be doing removable tattoos and have a surprise grab bag for lucky winners. The table will have a marble guessing jar contest and serval door prizes. So, please look for the table decorated in teal for Sexual Assault Awareness Month and get a tattoo, make a guess and get some information on services and sexual assault awareness .

Women’s Haven will be hosting an Awareness Event and Walk on Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Fuqua Park. The event will include a walk for Sexual Assault Awareness, live entertainment, self-defense classes, free food, face painting and a bounce house for kids as well as other activities.

Women’s Haven hopes that these events and activities will start conversations on what WE can do as a community to prevent and stop Sexual Assaults from occurring. Also, to bring awareness on this matter not, just for one month, but for every month in the year. For more information regarding Sexual Assault Awareness Month or the services, support and education offered at Women’s Haven, call the 24-hour Crisis Line at 580-252-4357.

Over 70% of all sexual assaults go unreported, which makes rape the most under-reported crime in the United States. Nationally, crimes of violence, such as murder, have declined in numbers, but sexual assault numbers continue to climb. Victims may not always report the assault because they fear that no one will believe them. Sadly, they may be blamed by their family, friends or community: “If she hadn’t been so drunk,” or “If she hadn’t worn that short skirt,” or “If she hadn’t been out so late,” she wouldn’t have been assaulted. Please remember that a victim is NEVER to blame.

Most rapists are not strangers. In 8 out of 10 cases, the victim knows their rapist. The perpetrator may be a classmate, family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor.  Most assaults do not happen in dark alleys of big cities. They happen in the victim’s own home or the home of the assailant. Rape is not just a big city problem; it is a social problem that affects all citizens and every community.

Sexual violence is about having power and control over another human being.

Victims will experience many different reactions including shock, denial or disbelief that the event happened. Victims may feel ashamed or embarrassed. They may feel guilty and insecure, or have a fear of being alone. Help victims by believing them, by listening to them and by showing your support for their decisions regarding criminal charges, medical care or counseling.

If you are a victim, tell someone you trust and seek medical care, if needed. If you or someone you love is a victim, 24-hour help is a phone call away. Call Women’s Haven toll-free at 877-970-HELP (4357) or locally at 580-252-4357.

April is recognized nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Women’s Haven is working with Stephens and Jefferson County to spread awareness! Paint the Town Teal will kick off the first week of April, which is focused on decorating both Stephens and Jefferson County in the color teal, the color of Sexual Assault Awareness. Women’s Haven will be decorating local businesses and light posts in both counties in honor of Sexual Assault Survivors and to promote Sexual Assault awareness and education. Women’s Haven encourages residents of Stephens and Jefferson County to get involved in spreading awareness by learning more about Sexual Assault Prevention and by participating in the Giving Envelope Fundraiser at Women’s Haven office in Duncan which will kick off April 1st. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Round Ryan

Ryan Main Street

This past Saturday was a great day for hunting Easter eggs around Ryan. Walker and Linda Ryan had a hot dog feed along with an Easter egg hunt just after dark, out at their house, east of Ryan.  There was a good crowd there and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

Brionna and I went over to Wichita Falls Saturday and went to the Whispers of Hope Horse Farm and visited Mary Elizabeth, that runs it.  We went to see the movie “I Can Only Imagine”. That was a really good movie.

Easter Sunday wasn’t quite as warm as we had seen on Saturday, but, we maybe saw a bit of precipitation for the day in the form of mist.  This morning, it was down-right cold again.  It is supposed to be in the 60s Tuesday and freezing Wednesday morning for this first week in April.  It’s amazing what changes we can have with our weather.

I took Brionna over to visit her grandparents in Denison on Sunday afternoon.  We enjoyed lunch with them at the Cracker Barrel in Sherman.  Then we went over to their house to visit some more.  I stopped in for a visit with Mom that evening.  I played some hymns for them and they enjoyed singing with the familiar tunes.  We all had a good time.  Then I made it back to Ryan, safely before it was too late.  I watched Jesus Christ Superstar late Sunday evening.  I have heard mixed emotions about this production.  We got into a conversation about it during our Sunday school class and I just thought I would watch it for myself and form my own opinion.  I won’t publish my opinion about it.  The music was pretty good, though.

We had a good turnout for Brenda Johnson’s luncheon Friday afternoon. Three of her four kids were able to make it to have lunch with her.  There were some brother and sister-in-laws from Chickasha that came to celebrate with her.  She had all of her co-workers from the clinic with her, too.  There were friends and some of her patients from the clinic that came over to be with her, too.  I believe she enjoyed the lunch that we prepared for her.  We all had a good time eating and visiting together.  She actually got off work about an hour early Friday.  We will miss seeing Brenda in that clinic, but Cyndi Cosme has been working with Brenda and   Marc for a couple of weeks now.  Cyndi is the new LPN in our Ryan Family Medical Clinic.

A number of Oklahoma teachers are taking a stand up at the State Capitol, asking for higher wages.  I saw a news clip on Channel 3 at 6:00 last week, where they interviewed a couple of students, as well as Mr. Chapman. They were discussing this issue on the news.

Joe Turner is still in the hospital in Duncan,  Ramona Johnson had her surgery in Dallas, and is expected to be discharged today.

Kim’s news for this week:

Brionna lost her phone this week, but, Foxy had it in the back seat.

So, Gary Lee ran over his knee, working on his car alone. He almost hit his neighbor’s home.

Mollye, thanks a bunch for Brenda’s retirement lunch.

Dustan had a lot of snakes in a box.

Resurrection Day, I can’t complain, I had a wonderful lunch at Blaine’s.

Everyone have a blessed week. Pray for each other and for rain.
