On Thursday, February 22nd, the Library will have a computer class at 4:30pm.  This class will be geared towards beginners and cover basic mouse operations, creating files and folder, and copying, moving and pasting text or files.  We will have computers available, but you can also bring your own device including phones or tablets if you have any questions about how to do something.

Next Monday, February 19, the Library will be closed in observance of President’s day.  We will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

On March 1st and 2nd, the Waurika Public Library will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday welcoming Terral grade school on the first, and Waurika and Temple Head Starts on the second.

The Story Of The Boot was a display of family stories in Jefferson County created to

compliment the Smithsonian Institute exhibition at the Rock Island Depot this summer.

These stories have been compiled into a hardback book.  Copies of ‘The Story of the Boot’ are $25 and take 2-3 weeks for delivery to the library.  If you would like the copy mailed to a location other than the library, please add an additional $5 for shipping and allow for an additional week for mailing.

‘Your Hometown’ is a DVD compilation of videos from the local community.  The DVD includes the opening of Veteran’s Park, Brickstreet Classic Car Show, Interviews with residents of Jefferson Co. and more!  Copies of the DVD are available at the library for $10 with proceeds going to the Friends of the Waurika Public Library.

Story Time has a new day!  Story Time is now on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.  Each week, we read stories to pre-k children.  After Story Time, we have games, puzzles, and children’s computer games available.  If you would like to see Story Time on a different day and time, just let us know.

Many events and programs at the library are supported and funded by the Friends of the Waurika Public Library.  The Friends have started their sponsorship drive for 2018.  Sponsorship of the Friends starts at just $10.  For more information, to become a sponsor, or volunteer, please visit the Waurika Public Library.

The 2019 Summer Reading Program continues with reading, learning, activities, and lunch Monday through Friday.

Monday, July 8th kicked off Week 6 of the Summer Reading Program as Ramona Johnson took over coordinating activities.

After Drop Everything And Read,  the kids learned about eclipses. For crafts, they made their own eclipses and stars.

Thanks to Vicki Etheridge and Starr Heron for making and serving quesadillas for lunch.

On Tuesday, after reading,  local children’s author Katy Thomas (writing as Katy Jean) visited to teach the children about homesteading.

Katy brought a goat and chicken for the kids to pet. Katy’s daughter Allie helped handle the animals while Katy spoke to the children. She also brought some local spring and fall honey for the kids to try.

After Katy read from her book ‘The Adventures of Allie and Luna the Itty Bitty Chicken’, it was time for lunch.

Thanks to Dee Goss and her team at the Circle D Cafe for proving corn dogs, french fries, and drinks for lunch. Thanks to Katy Thomas for coming to speak to the kids and her daughter Allie Thomas for helping out.

Thanks to Richard McGriff for serving along with Gracie Hood and the other older kids that helped out serving lunch.

On Wednesday, the kids continued learning more about space. They recapped some of the things they had learned about the planets in our solar system.

Next, the kids painted foam balls to represent the planets and put stars on black paper for the background.

After reading and crafts it was time for lunch. Thanks to Kristie Gaines and her team at the Waurika Quick Mart for providing pizza. Thanks to the Waurika Lions Club for serving.

On Thursday, after Drop Everything And Read, the kids continued learning about the solar system.

Next, they finished up their craft from the day before, gluing the planets they had painted onto the starry backgrounds they had made.

Thanks to Manya Reid and the Hastings Baptist Church for providing and serving hot dogs, fruit, chips and drinks for lunch.

Friday wrapped up Week 6 of the Summer Reading Program. While Ramona read to some of the kids, the ones that missed the day before finished up their solar system craft.

Next, Tim Trow (Thank you, Tim!) came to talk to the kids about space and telescopes. Tim also brought pictures of astronomical objects like Haley’s Comet.

Together we’ve raised funds to offer daily educational programs and lunches to help keep your children’s minds and bodies fed this summer. Whether keeping track of the amount of time your children spend reading or the number of books they’ve read this summer, children who attend the Summer Reading Program keep their minds active and enter the new school year ready to succeed.

All children attending the program must be registered. The program runs each weekday through Friday, July 26 – with the exception of the July 4 holiday. Reading and activities will start at 10 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Children attending the Summer Reading Program must be picked up by their parent, guardian or designee by noon each day. 

The Summer Reading Program is free to attend for children entering first grade through fifth grade in the fall. Age limits have been established and must be enforced to ensure one teacher can plan and successfully deliver a program for all. Older school-aged children are welcome to participate as helpers – as space allows, and all school-aged children are welcome to join us for lunch.

Summer is right around the corner!  The Waurika Public Library invites elementary-aged children, those who will be entering 1st grade through 5th grade in September, to attend this year’s Summer Reading Program. A variety of weekday programming will be offered and lunch will be provided daily for any school-aged child.

The theme this year is Libraries Rock!  Programming will run each weekday, June 4-July 27 with the exception of the July 4 holiday.  Reading and activities will be from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m.  Children attending the Summer Reading Program must be picked up by their parent/guardian at noon each day.

Unfortunately, due to safety concerns this year, the Waurika Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has been canceled.  The Summer Reading Program is something we look forward to every year and we hope to see everyone again next year when our theme will be “Tails and Tales”.

‘Connections in Death’ by J.D. Robb is available at the Waurika Public Library.

Homicide cop Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband, Roarke, are building a brand-new school and youth shelter. They know that the hard life can lead kids toward dangerous crossroads and, with this new project, they hope to nudge a few more of them onto the right path. For expert help, they hire child psychologist Dr. Rochelle Pickering—whose own brother pulled himself out of a spiral of addiction and crime with Rochelle’s support.

Lyle is living with Rochelle while he gets his life together, and he’s thrilled to hear about his sister’s new job offer. But within hours, triumph is followed by tragedy. Returning from a celebratory dinner with her boyfriend, she finds Lyle dead with a syringe in his lap, and Eve’s investigation confirms that this wasn’t just another OD. After all his work to get clean, Lyle’s been pumped full of poison—and a neighbor with a peephole reports seeing a scruffy, pink-haired girl fleeing the scene.

Now Eve and Roarke must venture into the gang territory where Lyle used to run, and the ugly underground world of tattoo parlors and strip joints where everyone has taken a wrong turn somewhere. They both believe in giving people a second chance. Maybe even a third or fourth. But as far as they’re concerned, whoever gave the order on Lyle Pickering’s murder has run out of chances…

 Story Time returns to the Waurika Public Library every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.  We read stories to the children and after Story Time there are games and computers that the children can use.  Next week, we’ll read “Our Day at the Zoo” released by the Oklahoma City Zoo and Metropolitan Library System.

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Metropolitan Library System rolled out a new, statewide literacy program called Read for Adventure. This program aims to promote literacy within families, increase their contact with the outdoors and provide an outlet for invaluable, nature-inspired discoveries.  Educating Oklahomans about wildlife and wild places has always been central to the OKC Zoo’s mission and through this partnership, are inspiring children to read about wildlife and connect with those same animals and plants at the Zoo.  

For this program the OKC Zoo and Metropolitan Library System introduced the children’s book “Our Day at the Zoo”.  The story is about children that visit and imitate a variety of animals on a trip to the OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden.  The book is available for check out at the Waurika Public Library and patrons that check out “Our Day at the Zoo” will receive one free voucher good for general admission for four people to the Oklahoma City Zoo good through March 31, 2019. 

The FRIENDS of the Waurika Public Library Fall Used Book Sale is coming soon.  The Used Book Sale is currently scheduled for Saturday, Oct 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the annex across from the library.  We’ll have lots of books to choose from at great prices.  Don’t miss it!

The Waurika Public Library increases our selection every week.  Recent additions include books from authors such as Sue Grafton, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Stuart Woods, David Baldacci and more.  Come check them out!

The FRIENDS of the Waurika Public Library Fall Used Book Sale is less than a month away!  On Saturday, October 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., we will have a wide selection of used books for sale at the annex across from the library.  Proceeds from the Used Book Sale support programs like Summer Reading, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, Santa’s Workshop and more.  If you would like to volunteer for events and programs or make a donation, visit the library or call us at 580-228-3274 for more information.

Among the books added to the Waurika Public Library this week is ‘The Strange True Tale of Frankenstein’s creator Mary Shelley” by Catherine Reef.

On the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein, comes this riveting biography of its author, Mary Shelley, whose life reads like a dark gothic novel, filled with scandal, death, drama, and one of the strangest love stories in literary history.

The story of Frankenstein’s creator is a strange, romantic, and tragic one, as deeply compelling as the novel itself. Mary ran away to Lake Geneva with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley when she was just sixteen. It was there, during a cold and wet summer, that she first imagined her story about a mad scientist who brought a corpse back to life. Success soon followed for Mary, but also great tragedy and misfortune.

Catherine Reef brings this passionate woman, brilliant writer, and forgotten feminist into crisp focus, detailing a life that was remarkable both before and after the publication of her iconic masterpiece.

The 2019 Summer Reading Program continues with reading, learning, activities, and lunch Monday through Friday.

Monday, July 15th kicked off Week 7 of the Summer Reading Program.  Our assistant Karlee Berthiaume is currently in school studying to become a teacher herself. So, in coordination with Sheila Hays, Karlee planned activities for the week.

After Drop Everything and Read, the kids learned about circus animals. Karlee brought pictures of different circus animals for the kids to pass around and look at.

Next, the kids made animals like lions and elephants using their hand prints as a framework.

Thanks to Pat McGriff for making spaghetti and green beans for lunch. Thanks to Starr Heron for serving.

On Tuesday, after DEAR time, Karlee Berthiaume continued teaching the kids about the circus with pictures of circus performers.

Next the kids made spinning color wheels. After that, they got to take their picture as either a monkey or lion.

Thanks to Jeri Nell and her team at Bill’s Fish House for providing chicken, fries, hush puppies, and fruit for lunch. Thanks to Pat McGriff for serving and bringing apple cobbler.

On Wednesday, The circus continued with Brittney Helterbran reading a story before Karlee Berthiaume started crafts with the kids. The kids colored circus animals and made train wagons for the animals to go in.

Thanks to Kristie Gaines and the Waurika Quick Mart for providing pizza for lunch. Thanks to the Waurika Lions Club for serving.

On Thursday, Brittney Helterbran read ‘Our Day at the Zoo’ to the children. The book was produced by the OKC Zoo and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries to promote the zoo. Each kid also received a voucher for up to 4 people to visit the OKC Zoo for free!

After reading, it was time for some games. Karlee Berthiaume setup a variety of games, including Ring Toss and a Can Knock Down game. The kids enjoyed playing and winning prizes.

Next, it was time for lunch. Thanks to Doc’s Place for providing corn dogs, french fries, and apple sauce.

Fridays are park days, so after Karlee Berthiaume read to the kids, it was time for some Fla-Vor-Ice and play.

Week 4 of the Summer Reading Program wrapped up on June 29th. Kim Clampitt setup activities for the week.  

On Monday, June 25th, after Drop Everything And Read, the kids began working on making drums. They started by painting cans. The kids also started decorating paper plates to make elephants.  Thanks to the Hastings Baptist Church for providing and serving lunch today. They brought hot dogs, strawberries, grapes, chips, cookies, and lemonade.

On Tuesday, after DEAR time, the kids finished making their drums by putting balloons over their painted cans to make the drum head. They finished up their elephants attaching party horns to make the elephant’s trunk.  Thanks to Patricia McGriff for making sandwiches for lunch. Along with sandwiches the kids had chips, grapes, and fruit cups

On Wednesday,  after DEAR time, the kids talked about insects. For their craft, they made ‘buzzing bees’ with index cards, craft sticks, rubber bands and string.  After making their ‘buzzing bees’, the kids headed over to the park to try them out. The ‘bees’ buzz when the kids swing them around by the string. Thanks to Kristie Gaines and her team at the Waurika QuikMart for providing pizza for lunch. Thanks to the Waurika Lions Club for serving.

On Thursday, after DEAR time, the kids learned about butterflies.  Thanks to Georgia Spoonemore for coming and teaching the kids about how butterflies grow and how to identify species like Monarchs.  Thanks to Jeffco Helping Hands Food Pantry for providing lunch. Thanks to Carol Prewitt and Jessica Coody with the Waurika Alumni Association for serving.

Friday, after DEAR time, the kids learned about bees. Thanks to Dannie and Janie Ramming for telling the children how bees are raised, what bees do, and how they behave. Dannie and Janie also brought bees for the kids to look at.  After learning about bees, it was time for lunch. Thanks to Gayle Austin for grilling burgers. Thanks to Carol Prewitt for serving. Thanks to Kimberly Morris-Kirkland and the Waurika 4H for cleaning up.
