…Another Strong Second Half Propels Ryan to Win

Sparked by another excellent second half performance, the Ryan Cowboys came away with a dramatic 32-26 double overtime victory over Wilson at Bob Givens Sports Complex last Friday night.

The Cowboys move to 2-0 on the season, while Wilson drops to 1-2.

Ryan will hit the road for the first time in 2022 on Friday when they travel to Central High. Kickoff for the non-district matchup with the Broncos is 7 p.m.

Central High is 2-1 on the year with wins over Grandfield and Bray-Doyle. The Bronchos fell to Tipton, 52-14 last Friday night.

It was a gritty performance by the Cowboys throughout last Friday’s game and unlike the first game of the season, the Cowboys played well in the first half despite going into the locker room with a 6-0 deficit.

The first half touchdown by the Eagles came on the first drive of the game.

Wilson returned the opening kickoff to midfield and it took the Eagles just four plays to cover the distance for the score. The run for the extra point was stopped short by Ryan’s Kyson Tomberlin, but Wilson had the early 6-0 lead with 10:49 remaining in the first quarter.

The two teams exchanged punts and then Ryan put together its first threat of the game on their next possession. The Cowboys drove from their own 30 to the Wilson 25, but a fourth down pass was broken up and Wilson took over on downs.

The Eagles promptly moved down to the Cowboy 16 where on a fourth and one Ryan’s Daylen Vandoozer stuffed the Wilson runner for no gain giving Ryan the ball near the end of the first quarter.

Defense reigned supreme for both squads in the second quarter, but late in the quarter Ryan drove to the Wilson 13.

Two Ryan penalties and an incomplete pass gave Ryan a fourth down at the Wilson 27 and Xavier Guzman’s pass was intercepted in the end zone and the Eagles returned the ball to the Ryan 19 with just 31 seconds left before intermission.

But, on the first play, Wilson fumbled and Foreman Casebolt recovered for Ryan giving the Cowboys the ball at the Wilson 16.

The Cowboys, however, could not take advantage and a fourth down pass fell incomplete as the half ended.

Just like a week ago, the Cowboys came out for the second half and drove the football for a score after the opening kickoff.

Casebolt returned the second half kickoff seven yards to give Ryan the ball at its own 35.

A nine-yard gain by Racen Williams and a four-yard pick up by Carsen Rodriguez gave Ryan a first down at the Cowboy 48.

On the next play, Williams raced around right end, hovering around the sideline and then cutting back to the middle and outran the Wilson defense for a 52-yard touchdown run. The try for two points failed, but Ryan had tied the score at 6-6 with 11:34 left in the third quarter.

A punt by Wilson and a turnover by Ryan gave Wilson possession at the Eagle 36.

It took the Eagles 11 plays to travel 64 yards for the go-ahead score.

Landon Richardson covered the final 13 yards for the score and the two-point conversion pass was broken up by Ryan’s Ethan Burden. The Eagles now had the lead, 12-6, with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cowboys answered with an impressive drive of 60 yards in six plays. C. Rodiguez got the tying score on an 13-yard run. The pass for two points was incomplete, but the score was tied at 12-12 with just 11 seconds to play in the third quarter.

The two teams once again exchanged punts and at the 8:01 mark of the fourth quarter, Wilson took possession at its own 40.

After a three-yard loss, Wilson quarterback Collin Wharton found running back Jake Schiralli in the flat and he raced 63 yards to pay dirt. The pass for two points was incomplete, but the Eagles had moved in front, 18-12, with 6:54 left in the game.

On the next possession, the Cowboys turned the ball over on downs and Wilson got the ball with 4:17 left in the game. A 40-yard gain gave Wilson a first down at the Ryan 30 and the Eagles seemed poised to put the game away with another score.

But, after an incomplete pass, a pass for a loss of three yards and a four-yard gain, Wilson faced fourth and nine at the Ryan 29.

The Eagles went for the kill by throwing the ball, but it was picked off by Williams at the Ryan six and he returned it to the Wilson 38, but a Ryan penalty on the return brought the ball to the Ryan 39 after a penalty was assessed to Wilson for a late hit.

The play of the game might have come on first down for the Cowboys when Williams found C. Rodriguez downfield and the sophomore running back made a juggling catch as he fell to the ground, but it was good for a 24-yard pass completion at the Wilson 37.

Guzman picked up 14 yards for another first down moving the ball to the Wilson 23.

After a one-yard gain, Williams found Julian Rodriguez over the middle for a 21-yard pass completion down to the one with just 46 seconds remaining in the game.

The next three plays netted no yardage, but on fourth down C. Rodriguez bulled his way into the end zone for the tying score with just five seconds remaining in regulation.

The Cowboys had the opportunity to win the game with a successful two-point conversion, but the pass failed.

Wilson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Eagle 49, but time expired on the return to send the game into overtime.

Wilson won the toss and elected to play defense first on the west end of the field.

On Ryan’s first play, Williams found Will Townsend open in the end zone for the go-ahead score.

On the critical two-point conversion, Williams scrambled around threw into traffic to Guzman who made a clutch catch just inside the end zone to put Ryan in front, 26-18.

Wilson wasted no time in answering the Cowboy score as Wharton found tight end Cason Fulton wide open in the end zone for the touchdown. The Eagles tied the game with the two-point conversion pass from Wharton to Fulton again that sent the game into the second overtime.

The Eagles got the ball first in the second overtime and a first down pass was incomplete. On second down the Eagles were flagged for holding putting the ball back at the Ryan 20.

An incomplete pass, a four-yard loss and another incomplete pass gave Ryan its possession.

It took Ryan just three plays to get the winning score as C. Rodriguez broke outside and scored from one yard out to give the Cowboys the victory.

The Cowboy defense was impressive after the game-opening score by the Eagles as they came up with several key stops and three turnovers.

The offense rolled up 388 yards of total offense. Williams led all rushers in the game with 100 yards on 14 carries – his second straight game of 100+ yards. He was also 12 of 21 passing for 138 yards.

COWBOY CORRAL: This was the 10th overtime game played by Ryan in school history….The overtime game last Friday was the first extra period game played by Ryan since a double overtime victory over Waurika, 44-36, in 2017….Ryan is now 6-4 in overtime games since the rule was instituted in the 1975 season….The Cowboys are 4-0 in games that have gone two overtimes….Ryan is 2-0 in overtime games with Wilson….Ryan actually played in one of the first overtime games in Oklahoma during the 1975 season when Ryan defeated Temple, 6-0, in a pair of extra frames in the season opener….Ryan moves to 9-13 against Wilson in school history and 2-3 in games since Wilson began eight-man play a few years ago…The first meeting between these two schools came in 1920 – a 46-14 victory by the Cowboys…..The 32 points scored by the Cowboys against the Eagles is the most since Ryan scored 42 in a 42-8 victory in the 1970 season….The point total by the Cowboys is the third highest total in 22 meetings with Wilson….The 26 points by Wilson is the most in the series in an Eagle loss to Ryan….Ryan and Wilson went 39 years without playing each other from 1977 to 2016 – when Wilson moved to the eight-man ranks….Wilson is the largest eight-man school in the state according to the latest figures released by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association…The last time the Cowboys were 2-0 to open a season was 2017, but it has happened only 21 times since Ryan began eight-man play in 1978….The Cowboys moved to sixth in the Class C rankings by the Tulsa World and that is the first time a Ryan team has been ranked since early in the 2014 season….The win over Wilson represents the first win over a Class B non-district foe when Ryan is playing in Class C since the 2013 season opener when Ryan downed Waurika, 44-26….A pair of former Waurika head football coaches were on opposite sides of the field last Friday night as Tony Roberts serves as an assistant at Ryan, while Glenn Howard is an assistant at Wilson.

Cowboys Pull Out 30-14 Homecoming Victory over Maysville

It was quite a show of offense last Friday night at Bob Givens Sports Complex by Ryan and Maysville.

It just did not result in a lot of points.

The Cowboys, however, had just enough firepower to record a 30-14 victory over the Warriors in Ryan’s homecoming game.

Now the Cowboys hit the road for the third time in four games as they travel to Caddo tomorrow night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Caddo is 1-2 on the year.

The Cowboys rolled up 453 total yards in the game but turnovers and the inability to convert two-point conversions kept the Cowboys from lighting up the scoreboard.

The Cowboy defense came up with a few big plays to thwart a number of Maysville scoring threats to help Ryan earn its third victory of the season.

The Cowboys scored on their opening drive of the game marching 70 yards on seven plays. Skyler Parkhill covered the final four yards for the score. The two-point conversion failed, but Ryan held a 6-0 lead with 9:34 left in the first quarter.

Maysville threatened to answer the Cowboys’ score, but the Warriors’ drive bogged down after a delay of game penalty and a nine-yard loss on a quarterback sack by Parkhill on a fourth down play from the Ryan 28.

The Cowboys took over at their own 37 and it took Ryan only two plays to score. Parkhill picked up seven yards and then sophomore quarterback Grayson Tomberlin had a nifty 56-yard run for the score. The two-point conversion failed, but Ryan held a 12-0 advantage with 3:51 to play in the first period.

On the ensuing kickoff the Cowboys perfectly executed an onside kick as Andrew Villerreal combined to kick the ball and recover the onside kick giving Ryan possession at midfield.

It took Ryan seven plays to drive to the Maysville 33 and that is when the game’s momentum slipped from the grasp of the Cowboys. Talented Maysville quarterback and defensive back Gunner Aprill picked off an errant Tomberlin pass and returned the interception 41 yards to give Maysville possession at the Ryan 48.

The Warriors drove the ball deep into Ryan territory, but Tomberlin picked off a pass in the end zone to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.

The Cowboys turned the ball back over the Warriors just two plays later on a mishandled exchange and this time Maysville took advantage. On the first play of the drive, Aprill scampered 24 yards for the touchdown and also ran for the two points to cut Ryan’s lead to 12-8 with 7:30 left in the first half.

Ryan answered the score with a seven-play, 63-yard scoring drive. The big play of the drive was a 42-yard completion to Parkhill that gave the Cowboys a first-and-goal at the Warrior seven.

After a loss and a 10-yard penalty, Kalen Weldon picked up 16 yards on a counter and then Tomberlin found Parkhill across the middle of the end zone for a four-yard touchdown pass. Again the Cowboys failed to convert the two-point try, but led 18-8 with 3:33 left before intermission.

Maysville answered the Cowboy score quickly. A 25-yard kickoff return put the Warriors in business at the Ryan 45 and in just three plays went the distance for the score. Aprill found Damon McCallister behind the Cowboy defense for a 47-yard touchdown pass. The try for two failed, but with 2:02 left before the half the Warriors had trimmed the lead to 18-14.

The Cowboys threatened to score again by driving to the Maysville 25, but the Warriors intercepted another pass in the end zone to turn back the Cowboys and the half ended with Maysville running out the remaining seconds.

On Maysville’s opening drive of the second half Aprill took the Warriors from their own 36 to the Ryan 32 as he carried the ball on every play with the exception of one pass incompletion. Ryan stopped the Warriors on fourth down and took the ball over on downs.

The Cowboys took 11 plays to move 72 yards with Weldon’s key 21-yard spectacular catch keeping the drive alive on a fourth down. Parkhill went around left end for the final 12 yards and Ryan held a 24-14 lead with 4:03 left in the third quarter.

Maysville went on another long drive and moved the ball to the Ryan 23, but on fourth down Villerreal chased down Aprill for a six-yard loss that gave the Cowboys the ball on downs.

On the third play of the drive Tomberlin found Parkhill open on the left side and after the Cowboy senior dodged a couple of tacklers, he sprinted 71 yards for the score with 9:00 left in the game. The run for two points failed again, but Ryan was in front, 30-14.

Two of Maysville’s final three drives resulted in the Cowboy defense getting key stops on fourth downs to help preserve the victory.

Tomberlin and Parkhill accounted for most of the 453 total yards on offense for the Cowboys.

Parkhill set the school record for most yards receiving in a game with 189 yards on just seven receptions. He also rushed six times for 30 yards.

Tomberlin finished with 151 yards rushing on 19 carries. He was 12 of 20 passing for 249 yards, but he did have three interceptions.

On defense, Tomberlin and Parkhill played big roles. Tomberlin was in on 17 tackles on the night, while Parkhill added nine stops. Villerreal, who had 11 tackles, and Parkhill put pressure on the Maysville quarterback much of the night.

COWBOY CORRAL: The win broke a two-game losing streak in homecoming games for Ryan not including last year’s homecoming game with Grandfield which Ryan won by forfeit…..Ryan now leads the short series with Maysville, 4-2….This was the first meeting between the two schools in an eight-man game….The last time Ryan played Maysville was in 1975 with the Cowboys coming away with a 9-6 victory….Tomberlin’s passing performance was the sixth most yards passing by a quarterback in school history….It was also the sixth most passing yards by a Cowboy team in school history….The 12 receptions in the game ties for the ninth most in a single game in school history along with the 12 receptions in a 1940 contest with Grandfield…The 30 points scored by Ryan is the second most in the series with Maysville just behind the 34 points scored in a 34-0 victory by the 1974 squad….The 1988 Ryan Cowboys, the first Ryan football team to play for a state title, were introduced at halftime along with coaches Phil Elerick and Gordon Garner.

Ryan Seniors Finish Last Game of Season At District Tournament

STERLING – It was a short stay at the Class B District Tournament for the Ryan Cowboy baseball squad, but it came as no surprise as the Cowboys closed out the season at 0-11 – the first known winless season in school history.

Last Thursday the Cowboys were pounded by Sterling, 15-0, in the first game of the tourney and then fell in a heart-breaker to Big Pasture, 5-4, in games played here.

Sterling pitcher Lane Reynolds battled control problems early but settled down to toss a one-hitter for the Tigers.

In the top of the first inning the Cowboys put two runners on via two free passes, but ended the inning without a score.

The Tigers also took advantage of Ryan pitcher Andrew Villerreal’s lack of control in the bottom of the first inning.

After one out, three consecutive Tigers walked. Eventually the Tigers scored four runs on a two-run triple by Matas Puccio and a Cowboy miscue.

The Cowboys got a leadoff walk in the top of the second and Pacen Wiest got the only hit of the game for the Cowboys but a base runner mishap contributed to the Cowboys failing to score in the inning.

Sterling added four more runs in the bottom of the second. A single, a walk and a hit batsman to lead off the inning was followed by a two-run single by Reynolds. A fielder’s choice and another singled scored the other two runs.

Reynolds then settled into a groove for the Tigers and retired seven straight Cowboys.

Sterling padded the lead in the bottom of the third adding five runs to take a 13-0 lead.

The Cowboys tried to extend the game in the top of the fifth when Trey Bryant walked and Gunner Phillips was hit by a pitch, but the Cowboys could not come up with the key hit.

In the second game with Big Pasture, the Rangers opened the contest with a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a passed ball to score one run.

The Cowboys quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Travis Fristoe led off with a double and after one out, Grayson Tomberlin launched a bomb over the left field fence to give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead.

The Cowboys added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fristoe’s two-out single and two errors on the play helped the Cowboys get a run to extend the lead to 3-1.

That came after the first of two lightning delays.

In the top of the sixth inning after the second lightning delay and a brief rain shower, the Rangers mounted a three-run uprising to seize the lead at 4-3. Two errors, two singles, a hit batsman and three stolen bases produced the three runs.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Cowboys tied the game. Carson Cooper led off with a walk and Wiest was hit by a pitch. Cooper was later thrown out trying to steal third.

An error put Fristoe on base and Wiest scored on a fielder’s choice by Phillips.

A pair of strikeouts ended the inning as the Cowboys left three runners on base. Ryan stranded 11 runners throughout the contest.

In the top of the seventh, the Rangers scored as Harley Clem led off with a single and scored on Caleb Thompson’s double. This turned out to be the winning run for the Rangers.

In the bottom of the inning, Skyler Wickware led off with a single and eventually stole second, but the next three Ryan batters went down on strikes and the game ended.

Tomberlin, who pitched effectively through most of the game, took the loss for the Cowboys. He finished with 11 strikeouts and allowed only three hits.

Tomberlin and Fristoe led the Cowboys at the plate as each had two hits. Tomberlin finished with two runs batted in.

Sterling came back to win the district title with a pair of wins over Big Pasture. The Tigers defeated the Rangers, 15-0, on Thursday and then secured the district crown last Friday with another 15-0 victory.

SEASON-ENDING NOTES: The home run by Tomberlin was his first of the season and the only home run hit this season by a Cowboy….Three Big Pasture pitchers struck out 12 Cowboys during the game – the third most strikeouts by a Cowboy team in a single game in school history…The Cowboys have now lost eight straight district tournament games to seven different teams….The Cowboys were directed by Tony Roberts and he was the third coach in three seasons for the Cowboy nine….The 11 strikeouts by Tomberlin ties for the fifth most in school history behind Coby Martin’s 16 strikeouts in a 10-inning contest against Ringling in 2010, Jason Smith’s 13 strikeouts against Byers, Texas in 1994 and Preston McCarty’s and Denver Overstreet’s 12 strike outs in 1949 and 2011, respectively….The 11 games played is the fewest number of games played since 1961 when Ryan finished 6-2 on the season….The 2019 campaign was marred by inclement weather and play eligibility problems….In an earlier game against Waurika where the Eagles mauled the Cowboys, 35-1, three school records were broken….The 35 runs by the Eagles are the most ever by an opponent breaking the old mark of 28 set by Tipton in a 1952 regional tournament game….The 31 earned runs in the game is a new school mark for most earned runs allowed…Waurika collected 23 hits in the game breaking the old record of 22 hits by Whitesboro in a regional tourney game in 2011.

Valedictorian Mackenzie Lewis Plans for Future in Education

Her mother, Carol, a second grade teacher at Ryan has served as her inspiration to become an educator.

Mackenzie will attend USAO in Chickasha this fall and begin her journey towards a degree in Elementary Education.

There are many things she enjoyed while attending Ryan, but what she loved the most was sports.

She participated in basketball, softball, and track.

One of this year’s Salutatorians—Cara Williams, will be rooming with Mackenzie at USAO.

Another one of her favorite memories from growing up in Ryan is that she had her mom as her teacher.

She’s a quiet, unassuming, thoughtful person with a constant smile.

When she is not deeply involved in reading a book of science fiction, she enjoys drawing (she drew the artwork for her mother’s Christmas card this past year).

She also enjoys playing basketball, listening to rock music, and binge watching shows on Netflix.

One of her favorite subjects in school was history.

Although she doesn’t admit it, she is also a very good writer.

Her favorite color is purple.

Just a few her accomplishments in high school are as follows: Beta, Co-Valedictorian, Southern 8 conference All- Star in Basketball, Southern 8 All-Conference Fastpitch softball, VYPE top 100 Oklahoma Basketball Players.

When she graduates from USAO she says she would be willing to teach in Ryan if her mother is still there.

Over all she has a positive attitude and friendliness that will take her far in life.

We look forward to seeing where her hard work takes her.

We wish her only the best in her future endeavors.
