New to the library’s collection is James Patterson’s “Home Sweet Murder”. This Large Print edition includes two true-crime thrillers as seen on Investigation Discovery’s Murder is Forever TV series.

Last week’s article incorrectly stated the date for The FRIENDS of the Waurika Public Library Fall Used Book Sale. The correct date for the sale is Saturday, Oct 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. “Our Day at the Zoo” is a story about children that visit and imitate a variety of animals on a trip to the OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden. The book is available for check out at the Waurika Public Library and patrons that check out “Our Day at the Zoo” will receive one free voucher good for general admission for four people to the Oklahoma City Zoo good through March 31, 2019.

In addition to books, the Waurika Public Library also has movies on DVD and Blu-ray available for checkout. Recently we’ve added ‘God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness’ to our collection. This third installment of the popular God’s Not Dead series follows Rev. Dave Hill as he faces an unexpected setback when his beloved church burns down — prompting the officials at the adjoining university to try and kick his congregation off campus. Battle lines are quickly drawn between the church and the community as the reverend now finds himself at odds with his longtime friend — the president of the school. Facing a legal battle, Hill soon seeks help from his estranged brother — a big-city lawyer and atheist — in a fight to help rebuild the church.

The FRIENDS of the Waurika Public Library Fall Used Book Sale is almost here! On Saturday, October 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., we will have a wide selection of used books for sale at the annex across from the library. Hard cover books are $1, paperbacks are $.50, and movies start at $2. Proceeds from the Used Book Sale support programs like Summer Reading, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, Santa’s Workshop and more. The 2019 Summer Reading Program wrapped up last week on Friday, July 26th.

Monday July 22nd, Ramona Johnson returned to take over coordinating the last week.

After Drop Everything And Read, the kids made abstract art with some craft sticks and paint.

Thanks to Pat McGriff for preparing chicken, fruits and vegetables for lunch. Thanks to Starr Heron and Melicia McFadden for serving.

On Tuesday, after Drop Everything and Read, the kids continued working on their craft sticks. They painted them the day before and then glued them together.

Next, the kids went outside. Some of the kids made sidewalk art with chalk while others played kickball.

Thanks to Pat McGriff for preparing and serving spaghetti and green beans for lunch.

On Wednesday, after Drop Everything And Read, Nicole Hill and Jacey Smith from the Medicine Park Aquarium and Natural Sciences Center came to talk to the kids.

Bill Eakin, Debbie Brandon, and Melicia McFadden serve pizza.

The kids each got a piece of lettuce to put in front of them while Franklin, a tortoise, went around and ate all of it.

After learning about turtles and tortoises, the kids made chimes out of small clay pots with nuts and bolts.

Thanks to Kristie Gaines and the Waurika Quick Mart for providing pizza for lunch. Thanks to the Waurika Lions Club for serving.

On Thursday, Heidi Townsend filled in for Ramona Johnson. After DEAR time, the kids worked on making a book about what they had done over the summer. The covers of the books were coloring pages made from pictures of the kids.

As they finished up working on their books, the kids went outside to make sidewalk art with chalk and play kick ball.

Friday was the last day of the 2019 Summer Reading Program 🙁

After Drop Everything And Read, Ramona Johnson showed the kids how to churn butter with a family churner over 100 years old.

Once all of the kids churned the butter, they each got to taste a sample alone and on some bread.

Next, it was time for lunch. Thanks to Juan Alvarez and his team at Sonic for providing grilled cheese and tater tots for lunch. Thanks to Melicia McFadden for picking it up.

Unfortunately, due to safety concerns this year, the Waurika Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has been canceled. The Summer Reading Program is something we look forward to every year and we hope to see everyone again next year when our theme will be “Tails and Tales”.

‘Project Kid’ by Amanda Kingloff is available as an an ebook from the Waurika Public Library’s virtual library on Overdrive.

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You,” – Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

March 2nd was Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Born in 1904, he would have been 114 this year. Last Thursday, March 1st, the Library welcomed Terral Public Schools grades K-4 to celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday. I read ‘Ten Apples Up on Top’ before the kids participated in games and activities. The following day, Friday, March 2nd, the Waurika and Temple Head Starts visited. Thanks to the Waurika FCCLA for helping on Thursday and to Vickie Etheridge and Starr Heron for helping on Friday. Thanks to all of the teachers, parents, and children that attended.

The Story Of The Boot was a display of family stories in Jefferson County created to compliment the Smithsonian Institute exhibition at the Rock Island Depot this summer.

These stories have been compiled into a hardback book. Copies of ‘The Story of the Boot’ are $25 and take 2-3 weeks for delivery to the library. If you would like the copy mailed to a location other than the library, please add an additional $5 for shipping and allow for an additional week for mailing.

‘Your Hometown’ is a DVD compilation of videos from the local community. The DVD includes the opening of Veteran’s Park, Brickstreet Classic Car Show, Interviews with residents of Jefferson Co. and more! Copies of the DVD are available at the library for $10 with proceeds going to the Friends of the Waurika Public Library.

Story Time has a new day! Story Time is now on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. Each week, we read stories to pre-k children. After Story Time, we have games, puzzles, and children’s computer games available. If you would like to see Story Time on a different day and time, just let us know.

The Waurika Public Library will be closed Friday (July 3) to celebrate Independence Day. We will reopen on Monday (July 6) at 9:00 am.

The 2019 Summer Reading Program will kick off on Monday, June 3. This year’s theme is ‘A Universe of Stories’ and a focus on space – with 2019 marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing.

The public library, community organizations and individuals care about your children. Together we’ve raised funds to offer daily educational programs and lunches to help keep your children’s minds and bodies fed this summer. Whether keeping track of the amount of time your children spend reading or the number of books they’ve read this summer, children who attend the Summer Reading Program keep their minds active and enter the new school year ready to succeed.

All children attending the program must be registered. The program will run each weekday through Friday, July 27 – with the exception of the July 4 holiday. Reading and activities will start at 10 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Children attending the Summer Reading Program must be picked up by their parent, guardian or designee by noon each day.

The Summer Reading Program is free to attend for children entering first grade through fifth grade in the fall. Age limits have been established and must be enforced to ensure one teacher can plan and successfully deliver a program for all. Older school-aged children are welcome to participate as helpers – as space allows, and all school-aged children are welcome to join us for lunch.
