Small Group of Ryan Thinclads Compete at Covington-Douglas

A limited number of Ryan Cowgirl track team members made the three-hour drive to Covington-Douglas High School Monday to compete in the Covington-Douglas Invitational.

The Cowgirls, who did not compete in every event in the 36-team field, scored 32 points on the day to tie Sharon-Mutual for seventh place in the meet.

Thomas was the meet champion with 111 points followed by Pawhuska which finished with 79 points.

The meet was for Class A and Class 2A schools only.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter brought home a silver medal with a time of 11:05.40.

The posted time is the third best in school history and the second best time recorded this season by the Cowgirl quartet.

Spangler and Alicen Williams finished second and third respectively in the 3,200 meter run. Spangler’s time was 14:08.8 – her second best time of the season. Williams was clocked at 14:34.95 and was over 30 seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls came in the 800 meters where Carter managed a fifth place finish. Her time of 2:41.30 is her best this season.

Cowgirls Fall in District Title Game to Central High

Central High raced to a 14-2 first quarter lead and never looked back in earning the district title over the Ryan Cowgirls last Saturday at the Central High gym.

The Lady Bronchos earned a 47-21 decision to advance into the regional tourney that begins today.

Ryan also advances to today’s regional tournament in the consolation bracket.

The Cowgirls were to have met Ringling at 1:30 p.m. today at Central High. The winner will advance and the loser’s season will end.

If the Cowgirls get by Ringling they would play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Union City.

In the district championship game the Cowgirls came into the contest with one girl diagnosed with the flu and another player with flu-like symptoms. This severely limited the Cowgirls’ attempt to pull off an upset and claim the district crown.

After dominating the first quarter, the Lady Bronchos ended the second quarter with Meagan Anderson hitting two treys – her second and third of the quarter – to give Central High an insurmountable 27-7 advantage at the half.

The Cowgirls came out of the locker room and scored the first three points of the third quarter to close the gap to 27-10, but that was as close as the Cowgirls would get the rest of the contest.

Lily York led the Cowgirls with 13 points, but nine of those points came from the charity stripe.

Anderson had 13 for Central High and she was one of nine players that scored for the Lady Bronchos.

The Cowgirls earned the spot in the championship game by upsetting the second seed Bray-Doyle, 46-31, last Friday at Central High.

In Friday’s game, the Cowgirls fell behind 7-2 in the first quarter, but two buckets by Samantha Good narrowed the gap to 7-6 at the end of the period.

The Lady Donkeys kept the Cowgirls at bay during the second quarter with the biggest led coming at the 3:42 mark when Kyndalin Byrd sank two charity tosses to build the lead to 14-9.

The Cowgirls were the only team to score the rest of the half and that came on a York free throw with 1:41 left in the half to put the margin at 14-10 heading to the intermission.

Bray-Doyle extended the lead to six in the early moments of the second quarter, but a three-point play and a layup by York put Ryan within one at 16-15 with 5:59 left in the third quarter.

It was at this point the Cowgirls took over the contest with a 11-6 spurt to close the third quarter.

The Lady Donkeys were able to cut into the lead and trailed 31-28 with 4:50 left in the game, but that was as close as Bray-Doyle would get the rest of the night.

Juliet Spangler connected on two charity tosses and Kenzie Lewis drained a trey to build the lead to 36-28 – the biggest of the night at that point.

Bray-Doyle would cut the lead to five at the 3:02 mark, but two free throws by Good and another layup by York gave Ryan a 40-31 advantage with 2:43 to play and from that point it was a matter of hitting enough free throws to thwart any hope of a rally by Bray-Doyle.

Down the stretch the Cowgirls connected on only six of 12 free throw attempts, but the Lady Donkeys could not take advantage of the misses partly due to missing four charity tosses during the same time frame.

The largest lead of the game was the final score that gave the Ryan a 15-point cushion. Good closed out the scoring with two free throws with :27.4 left in the game.

York led the way for the Cowgirls with 15 points, while Good contributed 12 and Spangler added 10.

The Cowgirls only shot 55 percent from the charity stripe, but were outstanding taking care of the basketball with only nine turnovers.

The Cowgirls committed only two turnovers in the second half, while Bray-Doyle had 20 turnovers for the game – 13 of them in the second half.

Ryan also held a 34-32 advantage in rebounding.

The Cowboys suffered a 50-42 upset at the hands of Bray-Doyle last Friday at Central High in the first round of district tourney play.

Bray-Doyle avenged a 30-point loss to the Cowboys with the upset victory.

The Cowboys led throughout the first half holding a 19-9 lead at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter when Dawson Tomberlin connected on a three-point field goal.

A Grayson Tomberlin layup with 1:51 left before the break gave Ryan another 10-point lead, but Curtis Cox connected on a trey for Bray-Doyle with 1:21 to play in the half to set the halftime score at 24-17.

The second half, however, was a nightmare for the Cowboys as they could simply not score.

G. Tomberlin opened the second half with a steal and a layup that put the Cowboys in front, 26-17, but the Donkeys answered with a bucket.

At the 5:16 mark, G. Tomberlin connected on a 10-footer giving Ryan a 28-19 advantage but from that point the Donkeys controlled the rest of the quarter.

The Donkeys went on a 14-5 run to end the third quarter and knot the game at 33 to begin the final period.

The Cowboy defense went to sleep in the final frame as the Donkeys hit five layups during the fourth quarter en route to outscoring the Cowboys, 17-9, in the quarter.

The Donkeys overcame 23 turnovers, but 15 of them were committed in the first half.

The Donkeys managed to get the victory despite hitting only 12 of 26 free throw attempts, but the Cowboys were not any better connecting on only nine of 21 attempts.

G. Tomberlin and Tate Kimbro each had eight points to lead the Cowboys in scoring.

DISTRICT TOURNAMENT NOTES:

Lady Eagle Softballers Extend Winning Streak to Three Games

The Lady Eagles softball squad is putting together one of the best seasons in recent memory.

Waurika picked up a couple of victories last Thursday when Temple hosted the Lady Eagles and Geroimo.

Games that were scheduled for Monday against Frederick and Tuesday at Ryan were postponed because of rain.

The Lady Eagles and Frederick were in the second inning when rain and lightning halted the contest and after a delay another storm came through forcing the postponement.

Tuesday the Lady Eagles were set to take on Ryan, but additional rains overnight on Monday and Tuesday morning forced the game to be postponed.

In the first game last Thursday at Temple, Waurika held off Geronimo, 7-6. In the second contest, the Lady Eagles pounded Temple, 13-9.

The Lady Eagles are back on the diamond today with a contest at Grandfield.

The Lady Eagles will be on the road again Tuesday when they travel to Central High.

Next weekend the Lady Eagles will return to Temple for the Temple Invitational on Thursday and Saturday.

Waurika is 8-5 on the season heading into today’s game and just need one more win to equal the number of wins from the three previous seasons.

Waurika 13, Temple 9

The Lady Eagles used a 10-run third inning to build a big lead and held on for the win.

Temple scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits, an error and a pair of stolen bases including a steal of home. This gave the Lady Tigers a 3-0 advantge.

The Lady Eagles came back in the top of the second with a pair of tallies.

A lead-off single and a stolen base by Gracie Walling helped get the uprising started.

Alana Lewis followed with an RBI-double and she scored on Riley Howell’s run-scoring single. This trimmed the Temple lead to 3-2.

In the top of the third the Lady Eagles sent 16 players to the plate.

Aubree Showalter and Faith Roberson led off the inning with infield singles and scored on Walling’s double.

Lewis had another infield single and she scored on a single by Hope Cummings. Howell walked and Grace Hill produced a two-run single.

Faith Hill walked and eventually stole home to increase the lead to 10-3.

After two were out Roberson and Landry Forsyth came up with infield hits. Walling walked to load the bases and the back-to-back walks by Lewis and Cummings produced the final two runs of the inning that put the Lady Eagles in front, 12-3.

Temple answered with a four-run rally of their own in the bottom of third that narrowed the gap to 12-7.

The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to 12-9.

The Lady Eagles added a run in the top of the fifth inning as Lewis drove in Roberson with a two-base hit.

The Tigers put the lead off runner on in the bottom of the fifth, but the next three batters were retired to end the game.

Eight Waurika batters had at least one hit in the game.

Walling and Lewis led the way with 3-for-3 performances.

Lewis had three runs batted in and Walling and G. Hill each had a pair of runs batted in.

Waurika 7, Geronimo 6

Waurika had a seven-run rally in the third inning and made it stand up in picking up the win against the conference tournament champion Lady Bluejays.

Geronimo got out on top with a three-run surge in the bottom of the first inning.

Two walks, a pair of fielder’s choices and an error led to the three runs.

In the top of the third inning Faith Hill led off with a single. Aubree Showalter singles and Faith Roberson reached on an error to load the bases.

Landry Forsyth picked up an RBI-single and Gracie Walling cleared the bases with a three-run triple.

Alana Lewis followed with a run-scoring double and she scored on an error that led Hope Cummings to reach base.

Grace Hill came up with a big two-run single to center field to close out the scoring and giving the Lady Eagles a 7-3 advantage.

Geronimo picked up a run in the bottom of the third after an error and an RBI-single to trim the LadyEagles’ lead to 7-4.

There was no more scoring until the bottom of the fifth inning. Geronimo led off with a single and the runner scored on a ground out to put the score at 7-5.

A two-bagger produced another run, but the Lady Bluejays could do no more damage.

Forsyth was the big hitter for the Lady Eagles as she went 3-for-3 at the plate and had an RBI. Lewis was 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Walling finished with three runs batted in.

Waurika and Ryan Thinclads Have Good Day at Waurika Meet

 The weather for last Saturday’s Red River Invitational Track Meet hosted by Waurika was some of the best of the season and the results for both Ryan and Waurika reflected the better conditions.

Waurika girls finished second in the meet with 100 points behind Atoka’s 122 points.

Ryan’s girls finished fourth with 68 points well behind third-place Frederick that finished with 96 points.

Walters took the team title in the boys’ division with a dominating performance. The Blue Devils racked up 187 points outdistancing Riverside Indian School that finished with 148 points.

Waurika finished third in the team standings with 91 points and Ryan finished eighth in the 14-team meet with 33 points.

One of the highlights of the meet came in the 3,200 meter relay where Ryan and Waurika continued to battle for supremacy in the event as they have throughout this season.

This time, it was the Ryan Cowgirl squad of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter that took first-place honors with a time of 10:52.01. The time is a new school record for Ryan in the event.

Waurika managed second place in the event with a time of 10:58.70. Asia Smith, Lexie Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora ran for the Lady Eagles in the event. It was easily the best time of the season turned in by this squad.

Waurika had three other relay teams to place in the meet – the primary factor for the Lady Eagles to earn runner up team honors.

The 800 meter relay team of Kaci Reynolds, Savana Ritter, Hope Cummings and Sara Ballard finished sixth with a time of 2:09.57.

That time was two seconds behind Ryan’s team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter who turned in a time of 2:07.28 to take fifth place.

The 400 meter relay team of Dallas Fristoe, Ritter, Reynolds and Ballard ran fifth for the Lady Eagles and turned in a time of 59.54.

In the 1,600 meter relay the Cowgirls and Lady Eagles battled again, but this time Frederick posted the winning time with the Cowgirl team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter finishing second with a time of 4:53.03 which is a new school mark.

The Lady Eagles finished fifth with the team of Smith, Streeter, F. Roberson and Mora posting a time of 5:10.28.

In the individual events, Madison Roberson had an outstanding day for the Lady Eagles as she earned two gold medals in the shot put and discus. Her shot put mark was 37-2, while the toss of the discus was 106-5.

Mora also won a gold medal for the Lady Eagles in the long jump with a leap of 16-2. Ballard earned a bronze medal with a jump of 15-0.

The other gold medal winner for the Lady Eagles was Smith in the 1,600 meters. She posted a time of 6:22.02 and Streeter was not far behind earning third place with a time of 6:28.37.

In the 800 meters, Smith finished fifth with a time of 2:46.71. Mora was sixth with a mark of 2:49.36 and F. Roberson finished eighth with a time of 3:11.99.

Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles as she finished seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 13.86.

The Cowgirls did not have any titlist in the individual events, but Spangler did earn a silver medal in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:14.33.

Harmon and Carter both placed for the Cowgirls in the 800 meters. Harmon was third with a timeof 2:44.04 and Carter was just behind in fourth place with a time of 2:44.87.

Spangler finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:39.24.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls was Katlyn Dabbs in the 300 meter hurdles with an eighth place finish. She recorded a time of 62.69. She is the first Cowgirl to score points in this event since the 1997 Southern Eight Conference track event.

The Eagles had another impressive day in the relay races. Waurika placed in every relay and won the 1,600 meter relay.

The team of Kevin Garcia, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano turned in a time of 3:42.98 to earn the gold medal just four-hundredths of a second behind the best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Arellano, Bryant, Garcia and Bryson Hernandez finished second with a time of 9:18.58. It was Waurika’s best time in the event this season.

The 400 meter relay team of Garcia, Tu. Mora, Nic Alvarado and Bryant was third with a time of 59.54.

The same quartet also took third in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:36.81. This was the best time of the season for the Eagles in this event.

Tu. Mora also won a gold medal in the 400 meters with his time of 53.62. He was the only gold medal winner for the Eagles on the day.

In the discus, Aaron Nitka finished fourth with a toss of 113-10, while Alvarado managed to finished fifth in the 100 meters with 11.5. Hernandez rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a seventh place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:32.44.

The Cowboys did not have any teams entered in the relays during the meet, but did have several outstanding marks in some of the individual events.

Walker Rawlings topped the performers for the Cowboys in the meet with two gold medals. He was first in the shot put with a toss of 41-10 and also first in the discus with a throw of 125-10.

Travis Fristoe had some impressive performances for the Cowboys. His mark of 19-3 in the long jump earned him fifth place and is the best mark in that event by a Ryan athlete since the 1985 Healdton invitational when Justin Savage posted a 20-6 jump.

Fristoe was also fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.25.

The Cowboy senior was also fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.86, while Landen Alexander also scored in the event for the Cowboys by finishing eighth with a time of 66.92.

Eagles Begin Playoff Run Friday By Hosting Southwest Covenant

After a week off during the first round of the Class B playoffs, Waurika’s grid squad will open the post-season Friday against a talented Southwest Covenant team.

The Eagles and Patriots will square off at 7 p.m. on Norman West Field at Waurika’s Cy Sloan Stadium.

Both teams have had an up-and-down season with the schedule.

Waurika had two games canceled during the regular season. That pales in comparison to the Patriots’ season that saw only five regular season games played.

The Patriots had hoped to repeat the success of the past couple of years until the season was derailed by the cancellations. After the Patriots’ win over Central High in the first round of the playoffs last week, Southwest Covenant has a total of six games under their belt.

In the 2018 season, Southwest Covenant marched all the way to the Class C state title game where they fell to Tipton. Last year’s season ended with a first-round loss after an undefeated regular season.

In the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the Patriots put together a 22-2 record.

Over that same time period Waurika has been equally impressive. In those two seasons Waurika was 21-3 overall and had a pair of district titles.

The Eagles would likely have made it three district titles in a row but stumbled in the contest with Empire earlier this season.

The only common opponent between the two schools from the 2020 campaign is Central High. Waurika defeated Central High, 56-6, in a district contest in week seven.

The winner of Friday’s clash will take on Laverne. Laverne advanced after Seiling was forced to cancel because of COVID-19.

The Patriots football program has produced one National Football League player. Dan Bailey, a former Oklahoma State kicker, is in his 10th season in the profession ranks. He currently is the kicker for the Minnesota Vikings. Bailey graduated from Southwest Covenant, which is located in Yukon, in 2007.

Three other District B-3 teams remain in the playoffs. Empire, which also had a bye, faces Alex on Friday night at Empire, while Snyder, a 72-28 winner over Strother last week plays at Velma-Alma. Tipton, which also had a bye last week, makes the long trip to Caddo for its first playoff encounter.

SW Covenant at Waurika

Time and Place: Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Cy Sloan Stadium

Records: Southwest Covenant is 3-3 on the year, while Waurika is 5-3.

State Rankings: Neither team is ranked.

Coaches: Trey Cloud is in his seventh season at the private school that has competed in both Class B and Class C since the 2010 season. Cloud has a 39-31 record as coach of the Patriots. Joe Allen is in his third season at the helm of the Eagles. Under Allen the Eagles have compiled a 26-6 mark.

Series History: This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

Last Week: Southwest Covenant played host to Central High and rolled to a 44-0 victory over the Bronchos. Waurika, by virtue of finishing second in District B-3, received a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Playoff History: Southwest Covenant is making its seventh appearance in the post-season since becoming a member of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association in 2010. The Patriots have a 6-6 record and have made one appearance in the semifinals and one appearance in the state finals. This is the fifth straight year for the Patriots to compete in the post-season.

Waurika is making its 30th appearance in the playoffs and the sixth since joining the eight-man ranks. Waurika is 29-26-2 in all playoff games and has the 1951 state championship to its credit. The Eagles have appeared in six state semifinal contests. The Eagles have earned three district titles since beginning eight-man competition. Last year the Eagles were eliminated in the second round of the Class B playoffs by Pioneer. This is the fourth consecutive year for the Eagles to be in the playoffs.

Team Capsules: The Patriots had only two regular season wins – over Caddo and Bray-Doyle. The three losses by the Patriots came to Regent Prep – the only non-district game the Patriots were able to play – and to district foes Alex and Velma-Alma. The Patriots led the entire game against Alex, but the Longhorns rallied in the final quarter to get the win. Tyler Kelly, a senior running back, will be the top threat for the Patriots on offense. As a junior in 2019, Kelley rushed for 1,143 yards in 11 games. Spearheading the defense will be Blake Riddell who was the team leader in tackles a year ago from his linebacker position.

The Eagles have played their toughest schedule in the three-year tenure of Coach Allen. Two of the three losses came to eight-man powers Shattuck and Laverne and the other defeat was an overtime battle with district champion Empire. Waurika has a strong ground game on offense with talented quarterback Trey Torrez and dependable running back Kevin Garcia. Torrez has 1,168 yards rushing in just eight games, while Garcia has contributed 662 yards on the ground. Torrez has 20 rushing touchdowns on the year, while Garcia has 14 scores – 11 rushing touchdowns and three touchdown pass receptions. The Eagles are coming off possibly their best defense performance of the season in the final week of the regular season. The Eagle defenders held Snyder to only six points. The Cyclones scored 72 last week in a playoff game against Strother.

Outlook: The Eagles will have to be poised and ready for the invasion of Southwest Covenant into the Eagles’ home field. Despite the record the Patriots bring into the game, they are a dangerous team as they begin to gain experience with each contest played. The Eagles will need to start well on offense and produce another outstanding defensive performance to move on to the second round of the post-season.

The Waurika Eagles won the District Championship tonight at home against the Empire Bulldogs. It was an exciting game. Obviously the complete story will be in this upcoming week’s paper told by Trey Smart, but for now we just wanted to say congratulations to the Waurika Eagles on a perfect season.

Ryan Annual Sports Banquet

Ryan High School athletes were honored Monday night in the school’s cafeteria at the annual all-sports banquet.

 A total of 47 athletes were recognized for their accomplishments in the 2018-2019 school year.

 Two Ryan athletes were honored with a new award – Cowboy and Cowgirl Award. Holland Carter, a standout track, cross country and cheerleader, and Travis Fristoe, the school’s only four-sport letterman, were selected for the award.

 Carter was also honored with a special letter jacket given to the girls cross country seniors that finish in the top ten in the state cross country meet. She was also presented with a special award for her contributions to cross country and track the past four years.

 Their names will be on a plaque that will be placed in the lobby of the remodeled Ryan gym before the start of next year’s basketball season.

 Athletic Director Tony Tomberlin also recognized two people for contributions to the Ryan athletic program. Ricky Phillips, the long-time public address announcer for the Cowboy football team, was presented a football signed by Ryan athletes in recognition of 20 years of service.

Trey Smart was honored for being not only a journalist with distinction but for recording the story of the Cowboys in print.

 Plaques were presented to the graduating seniors that participated in the various sports for the Cowboys and Cowgirls.

 But, the evening belonged to the athletes that participated in the sports of cross country, cheerleading, fast-pitch softball, football, boys basketball, girls basketball, slow-pitch softball, track and field and baseball.

 Letter awards were given to each of the athletes in every sport and special recognition was given to selected athletes in each sport. All-conference, all-district and conference all-stars were also presented certificates during the evening’s activities.

 Coaches Cheryl Carter, Steve Spangler, Tony Tomberlin, Stan Mueggenborg, Austin Masoner and Tony Roberts presented the awards during the evening.

Special recognition was also given to grade school coach Shelly Cain. Tomberlin presented her with five tickets to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City for her contribution to the grade school, junior high and high school athletes.

Waurika Picks Up Two Wins Over Ryan To Enter District Play

The baseball season is quickly coming to an end for the Waurika Eagles.

 The Eagles will enter post-season play today at Central High for the Class A District Tournament.

 In the first game Waurika will take on Empire at 3:30 p.m. and no matter the outcome will take on the host school following the first game around 5:30 p.m.

 The tournament is double-elimination and two losses by the Eagles in today’s action would end the Waurika nine’s season.

 In the final days of the regular season, the Eagles were able to get a pair of wins over Ryan and a victory over Geronimo. The Eagles dropped a contest to Dickson and had last Friday’s contest with Wilson rained out.

 Coach Glen Howard’s crew will take a 9-13 record into today’s tournament.

 The Eagles picked up their eighth and ninth wins of the season Monday night in a three-way matchup with Ryan and Geronimo at Geronimo.

 The Eagles defeated Ryan, 10-2, and then held off Geronimo for a 5-3 victory.

 Last Friday’s scheduled game with Wilson was rained out.

 In Monday’s action, Waurika took advantage of eight Ryan errors for the victory.

 The game was scoreless after two innings, but Waurika erupted for four runs in the top of the third inning.

 Bryson Hernandez reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an errant pickoff attempt.

 Michael Bryant and Zachary Brown both walked and an RBI-single by Austin Dyer scored Bryant.

 The Eagles scored two more runs on another Ryan miscue with Brown and Dyer scoring to give Waurika a 4-0 lead.

 Waurika added a run in the top of the fourth when Colton Bryant reached on an infield single and stole second. A ground out by Hernandez pushed across Bryant for a 5-0 Waurika lead.

 The Cowboys managed two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Eagles responded with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the win.

 Dyer led off the inning with a single and Edwin Garcia was hit by a pitch. Dyer scored as C. Bryant reached on an error and Garcia and C. Bryant scored on another Cowboy fielding error to make the score 8-2.

 Hunter Wesberry reached base on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Hernandez followed with a single and Brown got an RBI on a fielder’s choice to close out the Waurika offensive onslaught.

 Dyer and Hernandez led the Eagles with two hits apiece.

 In the second game Monday, the Eagles got an outstanding pitching performance from Brown and Wesberry recorded a save on the mound for Waurika.

 The Eagles scored first in the top of the second inning as Brown reached on a single and stole second. He scored on Gatlin Black’s run-scoring single and the Eagles got another run on a Bluejay error to gain a 2-0 advantage.

 In the top of the third inning, the Eagles added another run on somewhat controversial play. Wesberry reached on an error and advanced to second after M. Bryant walked.

 Wesberry scored from third after Bryant was hit by a ball trying to advance to third. This gave Waurika a 3-0 lead.

 Geronimo finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with a single tally helped along by an Eagle error to cut the lead to 3-1 after three innings.

 The Eagles added another run in the fourth inning after the Geronimo center fielder could not make a play on Dyer’s fly ball. An infield single by Seth Waid drove Dyer home giving Waurika a 4-1 lead.

 Geronimo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits, two singles and an error to cut the Eagle advantage to 4-3.

 Waurika added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning as three consecutive singles the last of which came from M. Bryant that drove in Wesberry for a 5-3 advantage.

 In the bottom of the fifth Wesberry came on to retire the Bluejay batters in order to seal the win.

 Waid and Wesberry each had two hits to pace the Eagles at the plate.

 A week ago Tuesday, the Eagles scored an 8-0 victory over Ryan after dropping a 12-1 decision to Dickson in a three-way contest at the Eagle diamond.

 The Comets score three runs in the first, fourth more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second.

 The Eagles managed a run in the bottom of the second as Brown got an infield single and moved to second on Dyer’s single. Watkins reached on an error and Payton Fletcher then got an RBI-infield single to give Waurika the only run of the game.

 Dickson added five more runs in the top of the fourth inning and the game ended by the run rule after the Eagles could not score in the bottom of the inning.

 Dyer took the loss on the mound for the Eagles.

 In the second game for Waurika, the Eagles jumped out on top of Ryan after the first inning with a three-run uprising.

 Wesberry singled and scored on Brown’s RBI-single. Brown advanced on a stolen base and some defensive indifference by the Cowboys sent him to third. Dyer picked up a walk and Watkins’ base hit got a two-RBI single for the Eagles.

 The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to add to the lead. C. Bryant led off the inning with a walk and Hernandez singled. C. Bryant scored on Wesberry’s ground out.

 Black reached on an error that enabled Hernandez to cross the plate and make the score 5-0 after two innings.

 In the third inning the Eagles got another run as Watkins singled and stole second and third. Watkins scored on a passed ball putting Waurika ahead, 6-0, after three innings.

 The game ended in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles scored two more runs with M. Bryant scoring on a wild pitch and reaching on a base hit and Wesberry scoring after reaching on an error.

 Watkins’ two hits paced the Eagles at the plate, while Brown tossed a one-hitter to get the win on the mound.

Waurika High School Athletes Feted At Recent All-Sports Banquet

A number of recognitions were handed out to Waurika High School athletes at the recent All-Sports Banquet held at the school a week ago Tuesday.

 All athletes were given their letters for participation in fast-pitch softball, baseball, powerlifting, football, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball, boys track, girls track and cross country.

 It was an eventful year as many of the teams had great accomplishments, but on this night it was all about individual honors that were well-deserved.

 The Waurika Athletic Booster Club presented scholarships to two senior athletes – Aaron Nitka and Madison Roberson.

 Each of the coaches took time to recognize the athletes for honors or performances they achieved in the 2018-19 school year.

 Here is a list of some of the notable accomplishments by sport:

 Cross Country

State Medalist: Asia Smith

Class 2A All-Star: Asia Smith

Regional Medalist: Asia Smith, Lexie Streeter

 Fast-Pitch Softball

All Southern Eight Conference: Destiny Barnes, third base; Madison Roberson, second base.

All Southern Eight Conference Honorable Mention: Hope Cummings, shortstop; Landry Forsyth, 1st base.

 Football

Oklahoma Eight-Man Football Coaches Association All-Stars: Aaron Nitka, Colton Bryant.

Oklahoma Eight-Man Football Coaches Association All-Star Alternates: Gatlin Black, Zachary Brown.

District B-4 Player of the Year: Turner Mora

District B-4 Offensive Lineman of the Year: Gatlin Black

District B-4 Defensive Lineman of the Year: Aaron Nitka

District B-4 Newcomer of the Year: Zachary Brown

District B-4 First Team: Colton Bryant, running back; Jordan Watkins, guard; Edwin Garcia, linebacker; Kevin Garcia, cornerback.

District B-4 Second Team: Seth Waid, center; Gabe Jenkins, defensive end; Hunter Wesberry, cornerback; Austin Dyer, defensive end.

Power Lifting

Oklahoma State Power Lifting Meet: Gustavo Gomez, 4th (645 total pounds); Hunter Wesberry, 5th (630 total pounds).
