Eagle Gridders Make Long Trip for Short Game

It is a long drive to Caddo. But the Waurika Eagles made quick work of the contest with the Bruins in coming away with a 48-0 victory last Friday night.

The Eagles move to 4-0 on the year and have not played past halftime in any of the games.

Waurika will move into district play Friday night as they travel to Wilson to face the Carter County Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The defense came up big for the Eagles last Friday night at Caddo. Waurika took advantage of four Caddo turnovers – turning two of them into instant scores – and also blocked a punt that set up another score for Waurika.

That effort coupled with Waurika scoring three touchdowns in less than two minutes of clock time propelled the Eagles to the big victory and aided in taking command of the game midway through the first quarter.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard with 8:18 left in the first quarter that set off the flurry of scores.

Colton Bryant carried the pigskin in from 15 yards out and also ran for the two-point conversion to give Waurika an 8-0 edge.

Caddo was mounting a drive to answer the score, but fumbled the ball at the Eagle 45 and Edwin Garcia alertly scooped it up and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. Kevin Garcia ran for the two points and Waurika held a 16-0 lead with 7:04 to play in the half.

The next Caddo possession also ended in a turnover and the Eagles took advantage.

Austin Dyer hauled in a 22-yard pass form Turner Mora and Mora ran for the two points and what had been a 0-0 deadlock just moments earlier was now a 24-0 Waurika advantage.

The Eagles got another break late in the first quarter as the Bruins were pinned deep in their own territory and fumbled the ball.

E. Garcia once again was in the right spot and picked up the loose ball and carried it 10 yards for a touchdown. Mora ran for the two-points and with 52 seconds to play in the first quarter, Waurika led, 32-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Bryant got his second score of the night on an eight-yard run. Zachary Brown ran for the two points and Waurika was in front, 40-0, with 7:21 to play before intermission.

Waurika closed out the scoring with Mora’s 23-yard scoring scamper and Matt Arriola tacked on the two-point conversion to put Waurika in front, 48-0, with 2:18 left until halftime.

Caddo could not answer and the game ended at the half on the 45-point mercy rule.

For the second time this season Mora led the Eagles in rushing with 73 yards on just six carries. Bryant tacked on 66 yards on nine carries and two scores.

EAGLE FLIGHTS: Waurika now leads the short series with Caddo, 3-2…..The 48 points score by Waurika is the most ever against Caddo and the 48-point margin of victory is also the most ever in the series…Waurika broke a two-game losing streak to the Bruins with the win…Waurika got its first eight-man victory over Caddo after two losses….The Eagles and Bruins played a two-game series in the late 80’s with Waurika winning both games handily…All three of Waurika’s wins over Caddo have been shutouts….Waurika has not started a season 4-0 since the 1989 season when the Eagles won their first nine games and carved out a 12-2 mark for the season…Despite the 4-0 start, the Eagles are not getting much respect around the state as they are unranked in every notable poll.

Oklahoma City – Richard Thorpe, Jon Waid, Curtis and Kimberly Plant traveled to Oklahoma City to take part of the annual Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Ceremony.

Before the ceremony began, Jon Waid had a chance to visit with this year’s winner Minkah Fitzpatrick, defensive back for the Univeristy of Alabama.

During their visit Fitzpatrick expressed that he was glad he didn’t have to face Oklahoma University’s potent offense in the title game.

During the ceremony, Oklahoma’s All State team was recognized by the Daily Oklahoman.

Former Governor George Nigh recognized Richard Thorpe, of Waurika and his brother and thanked them for keeping the memory of their father alive.

Abe Lemons, a respected coach who was born in Ryan, Oklahoma was mentioned during the ceremony.

The Jim Thorpe Award has been given to outstanding defensive backs since 1986.

Cowgirl Runners Turn In Impressive Performance

The Ryan Cowgirl cross country squad raced to its second straight meet title a week ago Tuesday at the Walters Invitational at Sultan Park.

While it was the fourth team title claimed by a Cowgirl cross country team in the short history of the sport at Ryan, it might have been the most impressive.

The Cowgirls won the meet with 40 points which was just in front of Class 3A’s third-ranked Community Christian squad that finished as the runner up with 43 points.

All five Cowgirl harriers claimed medals in the meet to help the team to the title.

Juliet Spangler led the Cowgirls with a runner up finish in the 3,200-meter race. Individual times were not available due to a malfunction of the timing device.

Lilybet Harmon claimed fourth place and Holland Carter was seventh to give the Cowgirls three top 10 finishers.

Lily York finished 13th and Katelyn Dabbs was 21st in the race. The top 25 runners earned medals.

The high school girls division at Walters featured 69 competitors.

Ryan is now ranked fifth among the Class 2A cross country squads.

The Cowgirls were to have competed Tuesday at the Velma-Alma Invitational and then will travel to Frederick tomorrow (Friday) to compete in the Frederick Bomber Invitational.

Ryan had two medalists in the junior high boys division – Koble Lewis, who finished 20th and Carson Williams, who was 23rd in the race that featured 80 junior high boys.

Jasmine Villarreal was ninth and Whittney Spangler finished 14th to both earn medals for Ryan in the junior high girls division. A total of 91 runners competed in the junior high girls division.

Waurika JH Harriers Impressive in State Meet

A large group of junior high boys and girls from Waurika traveled to the 25th annual Oklahoma Junior High Cross Country Championship meet last Thursday in Oklahoma City.

The meet was held at Woodson Park and Waurika sent 13 girls and five boys to compete with a number of teams across the state in 5th-8th grades.

In the girls’ division, Merritt was the state champion with 71 points and Watonga finished with 95 points. Waurika was sixth with 132 points – just one point shy of fifth-place Wright City.

Three Lady Eagles won medals in the large field of competitors over a 2,400-meter course.

Aubree Showalter was the best Lady Eagle finisher as she earned a silver medal for placing 16th in the race with a time of 10:02.1.

Kynlee Waters and Trish Julian each earned bronze medals in the race. Waters was 22nd with a time of 10:12.7, while Julia finished 29th with a time of 10:17.7.

All three competitors are in the seventh grade.

There were 139 runners in the Class 2A division of the junior high competition.

The Waurika boys finished ninth in the team standings for the Class 2A division.

Wright City won the meet with 44 points, while the Eagles had 181 points.

The only medalist for the Eagles was Treyton Torrez, who received a bronze medal for his finish of 24th place among the 100 participants.

Torrez’ time over the 3,200-meter course was 12:09.4

….Lady Eagles Earn Runner Up Honors Led By Smith’s Performance

Behind three gold medal performances in the relays, the Waurika boys’ track squad claimed the team title in the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational held last Friday at the local track.

The Eagles rolled up 141 points by taking the title in three of the four relays in the meet. Fox was the runner up with 119 points.

The Lady Eagles also had an impressive outing as they claimed runner up team honors with 94 points behind team champion Empire’s 134 points.

The 3,200-meter team of Gustavo Gomez, Octavio Gomez, Bryson Hernandez and Colton Bryant may have turned in the most impressive performance. Their time of 9:57.18 in the event was nearly a full minute ahead of second place Fox.

The 1,600-meter relay team consisting of Turner Mora, Kevin Garcia, Cache Arellano and Bryant also took top honors with a time of 3:52.81 which outdistanced second-place Empire by 18 seconds.

The 800-meter relay squad also earned top honors but the race was a bit closer as all five teams finished within seven seconds of one another.

Waurika’s 800-meter relay team of Mora, Bryant, Nicolas Alvardo and Garcia edged out Empire with a time of 1:39.37, while the Bulldogs posted a time of 1:41.25.

Individually, the Eagles also had some outstanding performances as four different Eagles claimed gold medals in their events.

In the 3,200 meter run O. Gomez took first place with a time of 12:54.09. His teammate, Hernandez, took the silver medal in the race with a time of 13:17.16.

The Eagles also racked up the points in the 1,600 meter run by claiming the top three places in the event.

C. Arellano was the gold medal winner with a time of 5:41.09, while Hernandez finished second with a time of 5:57.40. Garcia earned the bronze medal with a time of 5:59.01.

Waurika also had multiple placers in the 400 meters. Mora earned first place with a time of 54.0 – his best time of the season. G. Gomez was third in the event with a time of 61.8.

The final gold-medal performance for the Eagles came in the 800 meter run as G. Gomez recorded a time of 2:28.32.

Mora also earned a silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 19-2.

Bryant placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

Rounding out the scorers for the Eagles was Garcia’s fourth-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 24.19.

The Lady Eagle thinclads were led by the performance of Asia Smith. She accounted for 36 of the team’s 94 points with two gold medals and two silver medals.

Smith won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:47.51 and also claimed the gold medal in the high jump with a leap of 4-6.

In the 3,200 meter run, Smith’s time of 14:02.25 was good for second place. She was also second in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:45.32.

Madison Roberson had an outstanding day in the shot put and discus. Not only did she claim the gold medal in both events, but she also set meet records with her performances.

Roberson claimed the title in the shot put with a toss of 36-5, while the Lady Eagles’ Landry Forsyth also scored with a sixth place finish.

In the discus, Roberson recorded a throw of 89-9 and Oliva Ralls also scored in the discus with a sixth place finish.

The Lady Eagle 800-meter relay team of Kameron Ziecek, Kaci Reynolds, Dallas Fristoe and Sara Ballard earned fourth place with a time of 2:10.87.

Ballard also earned third place in the 100 meters. Her time of 14.07 was good enough to earn the bronze medal. She also was the runner up in the long jump with a leap of 14-4.

In the high jump, the Lady Eagles had two other placers behind Smith’s winning performance. Ballard Lexie Streeter finished second in the event with a leap of 4-4 and Ballard was fourth with a leap of 4-2.

Ziecek also placed in two events. She was fifth in the 400 meters with a 76.93 clocking and sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 31.31.

The boys’ and girls’ junior high squads also competed in the meet. The Lady Eagles finished tied for second in the meet with 98 points, just behind team champion Bray-Doyle’s 102 points.

The Eagles finished tied with Alex for fourth place with 36 points. Fox won the junior high boys’ title with 134 points.

Tallen Mora and Liberti Simmons led the way for the Lady Eagles.

Mora won gold medals in the 400 meters and the long jump, while Simmons finished with a gold medal in the 110 meter hurdles.

Simmons also had silver-medal performances in the 300 meter hurdles and the high jump and finished fifth in the long jump.

Mora was a silver medal winner in the 100 meters and a bronze medalist in the 200 meters.

Alana Lewis won silver medals in the shot put and discus, while Riley Howell took a bronze medal in the shot put.

Other placers for the Lady Eagles in the junior high division were: Bailey Romero, fourth in the 200 meters and the long jump and Mackenzie Horton fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.

The junior high boys were led by Trent Arellano. He earned three silver medals and one bronze medal in the meet.

T. Arellano was second in the long jump, 400 meters and 200 meters and finished third in the 100 meters. He was the only medal winner for the Eagles.

Other placers for the junior boys included Nicolas Wilson, who finished fourth in the 200 meters and J.J. Crank, who was sixth in the same event.

Last Thursday, the high school squads also competed in the annual Gary Readnour Memorial Invitational at Wynnewood.

The relay squads led the way in this meet, too, but the competition was a bit tougher.

The 800-meter relay squad of Mora, Garcia, Bryant and Alvarado finished second with a time of 1:38.88. The time is a season-best in the event.

In the 1,600-meter relay, the Eagles also earned the silver medal as Mora, Bryant, Garcia and Alvarado turned in a time of 3:49.56, which is also the best time recorded by the Eagles in the event this season.

The 3,200-meter relay squad of Bryant, C. Arellano, Mora and O. Gomez was able to earn the bronze medal with a time of 9:45.87. This was also the squad’s best time of the season.

Mora finished second in the long jump with a leap of 19-5.

Other placers in the meet for Waurika were Bryant in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 and Hernandez in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 12:14.27.

For the Lady Eagle thinclads, Roberson continued her impressive season in the shot put and discus. She earned the gold medal in the shot put with a toss of 36-10. Her throw of 89-10 in the discus was good enough for fourth place.

Roberson’s performance recorded in the meet in the shot put is among the top marks in Class A this season.

Streeter, Smith and Ballard all placed in the high jump for the Lady Eagles.

Streeter earned the silver medal with a leap of 4-6, while Smith was fifth and Ballard was sixth in the event.

Smith also placed in the 400 meters and the 1,600 meters. She earned the silver medal in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:34.21. Her time of 70.18 in the 400 meters was good enough for sixth place.

Ballard also placed in the long jump. Her best performance of the day of 14-0.5 placed her fifth among the competitors in the meet.

The 800-meter relay team of Reynolds, Fristoe, Ballard and Zeicek finished third with a time of 2:12.

Reynolds, Streeter, Smth and Fristoe comprised the 3,200-meter squad that also finished third with a time of 12:36.55.

No team scores were kept at the Wynnewood meet.

Waurika’s next action on the track will be Saturday (weather permitting) as they host the annual Red River Invitational which will feature teams from Classes A to 3A. Events will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Waurika Boys Claim Cameron Title; Girls Finish Second

LAWTON – After finishing second in two straight meets, the Waurika boys’ cross country squad surged to the title at the Cameron University Invitational here last Friday.

The Waurika girls’ squad also ran impressively with a second-place finish to Ryan bolstered by the first and second place finishes of Asia Smith and Lexie Streeter, respectively.

Both teams will travel to Velma-Alma for Saturday’s Class 2A Regional Cross Country meet at the Wildhorse Golf Course at Velma.

The Lady Eagles are pitted with six other top 15 teams at the V-A regional. Waurika is ranked 12th in Class 2A.

The Waurika boys are unranked, but come with some momentum after the win last weekend and two straight runner-up finishes. Four top 15 teams will be competing on the boys’ side of the regional.

Waurika will be trying to qualify for next week’s state meet which will require the squads to finish in the top seven of the teams. The top 10 competitors not on a team that qualifies for state will also be tabbed to compete in the state meet.

Last Friday the Lady Eagles were second to Ryan in the team competition. Ryan had 26 points and Waurika finished with 35 points.

Smith recorded a time of 13:12.86 in taking the girls’ title, while Streeter was not far behind with a time of 13:20.80.

Tallin Mora also earned a medal for the Lady Eagles with her 10th-place finish. She recorded a time of 14:09.52.

Faith Roberson was 19th on the day with a time of 15:24.23, while Dallas Fristoe was right behind in 20th place with a time of 15:37.02.

Rounding out the competitors for the Lady Eagles were Kaci Reynolds (22nd, 15:37.02), Hope Cummings (31st, 16:56.97), Gracie Walling (39th, 17:53.48), Madison Roberson (43rd, 18:25.86) and Sara Ballard (48th, 20:49.57).

The Eagle squad claimed the title by nudging out Purcell. Waurika finished with 42 points, while Purcell tallied 45 points.

Bryson Hernandez led the finishers among the Waurika boys’ competitors just as he has in all but one meet this season. Hernandez crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 19:44.50.

Teammate Cache Arellano was right behind in fourth place with a time of 19:45.96. Arellano and Hernandez were the only two medalists for the Eagles.

Gustavo Gomez was 13th in the race with a time of 21:38.53, while Octavio Gomez was 16th with a time of 21:21.09. Travis Etheridge rounded out the harriers for Waurika by finishing 29th with a time of 24:14.81.

Cowgirls’ Carter Claims Gold Medal at Elgin Invitational

Despite having only five competitors the Ryan Cowgirls finished in fifth place in the tough Elgin Invitational Track Meet last Thursday.

The Cowgirls amassed 68 points in the small school division which consisted of schools from Class 3A to Class A. Hollis, a Class 2A school, won the meet with 135 points.

And, this small contingent of Cowgirl thinclads had a memorable day in the meet that replaced the canceled Stratford meet that was originally on the Cowgirl track schedule.

Holland Carter led the Cowgirls with a gold medal in the 800 meters. Her time of 3:01.3 was impressive considering the windy conditions.

Lilybet Harmon earned a bronze medal in the 800 meters with a time of 3:15.27.

The other highlight of the day came in the 1,600 meter relay. While the Cowgirls managed only a fourth place finish in the event, the squad set a school record with a time of 5:12.17, besting the previous school record mark of 5:15.0 set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference meet.

The 1,600 meter relay team consists of Carter, Harmon, Lily York and Juliet Spangler.

The same group of girls earned a silver medal in the 3,200 meter relay with a time of 12:22.37 – which was well short of the school mark this relay team set earlier this season at Cache.

The distance races are definitely the strength of the Cowgirls this season as Spangler and York added to the point total with high finishes in the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters.

Spangler earned a silver medal in both events. Her time of 6:28.25 is behind her own school record time of 6:16.82 and is the fifth best in school history.

York was right behind her teammate and earned a bronze medal with a time of 6:31.45, which put her at sixth on the school record chart in the 1,600 meters.

Spangler and York also finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,200 meters. Spangler turned in a time of 14:15.37, while York finished the race with a time of 14:57.55. Both were well back of the winning time of 13:12.65.

This meet had a unique format in that participants from schools in all classes ran together in each event. The 3,200 meter relay team actually ran a better time than the Lawton MacArthur and Lawton High squads.

The 68 points scored by the team in the meet was the second highest point total by a Cowgirl track team in school history.

The Cowgirls will try to improve on their early season performances tomorrow (Friday) at the Waurika Eight-Man Invitational Meet. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., while the running events will get under way at 10 a.m.

Ryan, Waurika Cagers Set To Enter Post-Season Play

The slate is clean.

While regular season records mean something for district tournament pairings and seeding, every basketball squad in Oklahoma starts the post-season with a 0-0 mark.

That is good news for the roundball squads at Waurika and Ryan as all four teams enter the playoffs with losing records.

Play begins tomorrow night (Friday) in the Class A District Tournament for both Waurika and Ryan.

Both Waurika teams will travel to Ft. Cobb-Broxton to face Ringling, while both Ryan teams will journey to Central High to face Bray-Doyle.

The girls’ tilts will open the tournament at 6:30 p.m. at both sites.

Awaiting the winner of the Waurika-Ringling games will be Ft. Cobb, while Central High will take on the winner of the Ryan and Bray-Doyle matchups.

The championship games will be played Saturday with the girls’ games tipping at 6:30 p.m.

Waurika and Ringling drew a tough assignment for the district tourney.

The only regular season meeting between the two Jefferson County schools was canceled because of the flu.

However, the boys’ team that survives that contest will have to face a legitimate state title contender.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton is 22-3 on the year and the only three losses have been to ranked teams in Class B, Class 2A and Class 5A. The Mustangs have won nine straight contests.

The Mustangs, ranked second in Class A, won the Caddo County Tournament and garnered runner up honors in tournaments at Chattanooga and Anadarko.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton will be well-rested as the Mustangs last played last Saturday against Walters giving them a week to prepare for the winner of Waurika and Ringling.

The Blue Devil boys come into the tournament with an 8-10 mark. They have been inconsistent much of the season, but should be competitive against the Eagles.

Coach Joe Masoner’s Waurika boys have also struggled to find wins in 2018. The Eagles were 4-13 heading into last Tuesday’s game with Grandfield.

Waurika has had three games canceled because of the flu and have only played once since January 23 before last Tuesday.

The Eagles have had turnover troubles most of the season averaging almost 20 miscues a game.

Cache Arellano has been the ringleader for the Eagles averaging over nine points a game and pulling down an average of eight rebounds a game.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton handed Waurika an 81-28 loss in the first round of the Chattanooga Tournament.

The girls’ bracket of the district tourney at Ft. Cobb will be much the same as the boys’ bracket.

The Lady Mustangs will be the overwhelming favorite as they come in ranked 15th in Class A and won the Chattanooga Tournament and were the runner up at the tough Caddo County fray.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton is 15-10 on the year, but only 5-5 in its last 10 games.

Ringling’s girls will come into the tournament with a 9-6 record and have one tournament title to their credit – the St. Jo, Texas Invitational.

The Waurika girls have struggled all year under first-year coach Kalee Baxter and hold a 5-11 record not including Tuesday’s result with Grandfield.

The Lady Eagles have been led most of the season by Madison Roberson. Roberson has averaged 15 points a game and averages about 15 boards a game.

In the district tournament at Central High, none of the boys’ squads will enter the tournament with a winning record – and it isn’t close.

Ryan, with a mark of 5-16, was granted the top seed, but Bray-Doyle chose to match up with the Cowboys in the first round of the tournament.

Central High’s boys started the season 0-10, but earned the consolation title at the Black Diamond Tournament at Rush Springs at the beginning of 2018. The Bronchos are 4-16 on the year.

Bray-Doyle has had a tough year as well as the Cowboys and Bronchos.

The Donkeys have a 3-15 record heading to the district tourney not including last Monday’s results.

The Cowboys own a win over the Donkeys just before Christmas, but Bray-Doyle has been playing a bit better as of late.

Coach Judd Matthes’ squad has struggled to score during most of the season.

While a number of Cowboys can contribute points on a given night, Ryan lacks the go-to player that is a consistent scorer.

Skyler Parkhill has been the top point-getter for the Cowboys overall.

Central High drew the top seed in the girls’ bracket and comes into the tournament with a 15-8 mark that does not include last Tuesday’s game with Sterling.

The Lady Bronchos won the Minco Invitational and were runner up at the Black Diamond Tournament.

Bray-Doyle’s girls own a two-point win over Ryan in a regular season meeting before Christmas and have a 12-8 mark not including last Monday’s contest with Oklahoma School for the Deaf.

The Lady Donkeys won the Maysville Shootout in December, but are only 4-7 since January 1 – not including the game with OSD.

The Cowgirls, under first-year coach Steve Spangler, have compiled a 7-14 record for the season.

It has been a struggle on the offensive end for the Cowgirls most of the season, but Lily York has been the top point-getter for the season especially in the recent part of the schedule.

Ryan closed out the regular season, however, with two of their better games on the offensive end of the court.

The Cowgirls will start four sophomores and only one senior. The roster has been limited most of the season due to lack of participation and injuries.

Both the district champion and the district runner up will advance to next week’s regional tournament.

Cowgirls Set For District Tournament Play

The fast-pitch softball season has not gone quite as expected for Coach Stan Mueggenborg’s Cowgirls.

But, as the Cowgirls get ready to enter district competition every team starts with a 0-0 mark.

The winner of the district tournament will advance to next week’s regional tourney.

This year’s district tournament is today (Thursday) at Thackerville and will include the host school, Turner and Ryan.

Ryan, 6-14 on the year not including Tuesday’s scheduled game with Springer heading into the tourney, was slated to take on Thackerville today at 12 noon. The loser of that game was to have played Turner at 1:30 p.m.

The winner of the first game was to have met Turner at 3 p.m.

The tournament is double-elimination with the championship game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. today and an “if necessary” game at 6 p.m.

Only Thackerville comes into the tournament with a winning record at 11-8 not including last Tuesday’s scheduled game.

Here is a look at the results for the Cowgirls last week including three games in the Comanche Tournament the game a week ago Tuesday against Waurika as well as Monday night’s contest.

Ryan 12, Temple 2

On Monday the Cowgirls hosted Temple on Larry Ninman Field and came away with the victory that should give the Cowgirls a bit of momentum heading into today’s district tourney.

Temple got on the board in the top of the first with a single run, but the Cowgirls took the lead in the bottom of the first after two were out.

Brooklyn Charmasson and Sadie Guzman each reached base and came around to score putting the Cowgirls in front, 2-1.

The score stayed that way until the top of the fourth inning when Temple got a run to tie the score at 2-2.

The Cowgirls then exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the victory.

Madison Rhoades led off the inning with a walk and scored. The next three Cowgirl batteres reached base to set up Kodi Duke’s grand slam to center field that put the Cowgirls comfortably in front, 7-2.

The Cowgirls scored five more runs and the game ended when Ryan reached the 10-run advantage.

Emilee Martin picked up the win in the circle for the Cowgirls and also had two hits in the game.

Guzman, Martin, Justyce Keith and Laken De Board were honored on Senior Night in their final home game for the Cowgirl fast-pitch squad.

Marietta 7, Ryan 0

In the final game of the Comanche Tournament last Saturday the Cowgirls fell to Marietta, 7-0.

Marietta scored one in the first, one in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth to record the victory.

The Cowgirls had a threat in the top of the second inning as Charmasson and Duke reached base, but the Cowgirls could not produce a run.

The Cowgirls only collected one other hit the rest of the game that was ended in the top of the fifth inning.

Wilson 9, Ryan 4

In the second game of the tournament last Thursday, Ryan jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

Samantha Good and Charmasson had base hits and came around to score for the Cowgirls.

Wilson tied the game in the bottom of the first inning and then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to hold a 9-2 advantage.

In the top of the third, the Cowgirls produced two more runs as Guzman and Martin reached base and scored on Duke’s base hit to cut the lead to 9-4. The Cowgirls left the bases loaded in the inning.

Good led off the top of the fourth inning reaching base on a hit by pitch, but the next three Cowgirls went down in order and the game ended because of the time limit.

Bray-Doyle 5, Ryan 2

In the opening game of the tourney, Ryan held a 1-0 lead after one inning.

The Cowgirls’ Charmasson got a base hit and scored after the Cowgirls got three straight hits. Ryan again left two runners on base.

Bray-Doyle took the lead in the top of the second with two runs.

The Cowgirls tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Duke reached base on an infield hit and came around to score.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Donkeys took the lead for good with two runs. Bray-Doyle added an insurance run in the top of the fifth and the Cowgirls could get nothing going in the final two innings.

Ryan 11, Waurika 0

Spurred by some heavy hitting, the Cowgirls picked up the victory over the Lady Eagles in a game that ended after four innings because of the run rule.

A single by Martin drove in Charmasson, who had reached on a base hit, and moved Guzman to third after Guzman had walked. Guzman scored by stealing home to put the Cowgirls in front, 2-0. Ryan left the bases loaded in the inning.

The Lady Eagles threatened in the bottom of the first as Destiny Barnes and Madison Roberson got two-out base hits, but Ryan got a ground out to end the inning.

Ryan added five runs in the top of the second. After one out, Carter Combs walked and Good followed with a two-run home run to left. Charmasson singled and Guzman slammed a two-run homer to put the Cowgirls in front, 6-0.

Martin followed with a single, Duke singled and Martin scored on an error, but Waurika managed to retire the Cowgirls as they again left the bases loaded with a 7-0 lead.

Again the Lady Eagles got something going in the bottom of the second with a walk and two singles, but Waurika left all three runners stranded.

The Cowgirls put the game out of reach in the top of the third inning with four more tallies. Three straight walks loaded the bases and Duke tripled to right center and then scored when the Lady Eagles made a throwing error getting the ball in from the outfield.

The Lady Eagles got another hit in the bottom of the third, but the Cowgirls got three ground outs to prevent Waurika from scoring.

Avery Howard and Combs picked up base hits in the top of the fourth for the Cowgirls, but Ryan could not get a key hit and ended the inning without scoring.

In the bottom of the fourth, Waurika was retired in order to end the game.

Charmasson and Martin each had two hits and Duke, Charmasson and Guzman each had a pair of runs batted in.

Cowgirl 3,200-Meter Relay Squad Sets School Mark

In only their second outing of the outdoor track season, the Ryan Cowgirls’ 3,200-meter relay team turned in a record-breaking performance at the Cache Invitational last Thursday at Cache High School.

The relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Holland Carter and Juliet Spangler smashed the school record with a time of 11:56.76 – besting the old mark by nearly 11 seconds that was set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference track meet.

The Cowgirls, however, could manage only a fourth place finish in the 3,200-meter relay in a tough meet that featured a large and small school division.

The small school division was comprised of schools from Class 4A down to Class A. Marlow claimed the team title with 137 points – well ahead of runner up Rush Springs that finished with 96 points.

Ryan tied Hobart for ninth place in the small school division with both teams earning 20 points in the meet.

Spangler was the only Cowgirl competitor to score in any other events in the meet.

The Cowgirl sophomore was third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:24.33. That time is the third best in school history with Spangler owning the two fastest times in the event.

Spangler also claimed a bronze medal in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13:45.36.

That time is the second best mark in the event in school history and Spangler owns the school record at 13:38.16.

The Cowgirls’ 1,600-meter relay team of Harmon, York, Carter and Spangler did not score in the meet finishing in seventh place, however, their recorded time of 5:21.37 is thought to be the second best time in school history and just six seconds off the school record of 5:15.0 set in the 1990 Southern Eight Conference meet.

Other competitors included Carter in the 800 meters who also finished one spot out of earniing points, while Harmon finished 11th in the event.

York was eighth in the 3,200 meters.

Sadie Guzman and Justyce Keith also competed for the Cowgirls in the sprint events.

The Cowgirls will be in action again tomorrow at the Stratford Invitational and will compete on April 13 at the Southern Oklahoma 8-Man Invitational hosted by Waurika.
