Roberson Wins State Title, Waurika Places at State

Roberson becomes first girl thinclad to win a state title in the shot put.

Madison Roberson added to the rich heritage of Waurika track and field by claiming the state title in the shot put at last weekend’s Class A State Track Meet held at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.

Roberson is the first girl to win a state title in the shot put for Waurika and only the second girl to win a title in a field event.

The multi-sport athlete for the Lady Eagles is only the second Waurika athlete to win a title in the shot put. The only other person to win a title in the event is the late Bob Bodenhamer who claimed a title in 1945 – the second year a state track meet was conducted.

Her title-winning toss was 35-2.5 and oddly enough was only her fifth best mark of the 2019 season. Her best toss was 38-3 at a meet in Wynnewood a few weeks ago.

Roberson competed in the shot put last Saturday after having placed sixth in the discus on Friday before the rest of the meet was delayed until Saturday because of rain.

Roberson’s throw in the discus was 104-6 and was her second best throw of the season for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles finished tied for 14th among the Class A schools in the annual track and field championships. The Lady Eagles racked up 16 points and finished in a tie with Empire, Weleetka and Davenport.

Boise City-Keyes won the meet with 125 points, while Thomas finished second with 75. Oil Field Conference member Velma-Alma finished third at the state meet with 68 points.

This year’s meet featured a new scoring format and it meant 54 different schools scored points. Points were earned by individuals and relays from places one to eight. The top six places earned medals.

The Lady Eagles had only one other competitor place at the state track meet. Asia Smith finished sixth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:45.37.

Smith’s time at the state meet was her best time of the season and was 15 seconds better than her second best time posted at the regional meet the week before. She sliced over a minute off her time posted at the first meet of the season.

Lexie Streeter competed in the 3,200 meters but managed only to finish 11th among the 16 individuals in the event. However, her time of 13:41.20 was her best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Smith, Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora also competed at state and just missed scoring by finishing ninth with a time of 11:06.32 – the team’s second best time of the season.

The Waurika boys finished in a tie for 14th in the team race at the state meet. The Eagles accumulated 18 points and finished tied with Cyril.

Thomas won the state team title with 120 points, while Boise City-Keyes finished well behind with 58 points. Southern Eight Conference rival Grandfield finished just ahead of the Eagles with 20 points.

Leading the way for the Eagles was a fifth-place finish by Turner Mora in the 400 meters. His time of 52.68 was his best time of the season. Like Streeter, Tu. Mora improved throughout the season in the event.

The other individual that scored for the Eagles was senior Aaron Nitka. He finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 122-6, which was his second best throw of the season behind his performance of 128-3 at the regional track meet.

Waurika had three relay teams that competed in the meet, but only two of the teams placed.

The 800 meter relay team of Tucker Mora, Colton Bryant, Nick Alvarado and Kevin Garcia put together a sixth place finish with a time of 1:37.38. The time was the fifth best of the season for the Eagles.

The 1600 meter relay team also finished sixth and recorded a time of 3:35.13 – the best time of the season. Garcia, Tu. Mora, Bryant and Cache Arellano represented the Eagles on the team.

The 3,200 meter relay team finished 10th in a tough field. Arellano, Bryson Hernandez, Gustavo Gomez and Octavio Gomez recorded a time of 9:05.85 and it was their best time of the year.

Nitka and Alvarado also competed in events at the state meet, but did not place. Nitka’s toss of 39-7.5 in the shot put was his second best mark of the season. Alvarado’s time in the 200 meters was 24.62 and it was his second best time of the season.

TRACK TIDBITS: The Lady Eagles’ tie for 14th place is the best finish at the state meet since finishing 12th in 2014….The Lady Eagles also finished 14th in 2016….The 16 points scored is the most for the Lady Eagles at state since scoring 21 points in 2012…Waurika’s girls also scored 16 points in 2014….The best finish for a Waurika girls’ track squad at state is fourth during the 2000 event at Putnam City… The Lady Eagles have had seven top 10 finishes at the state meet since the first meet was held in 1972….M. ...Both Squads Qualify Several Competitors for State Track Meet

It was an outstanding day for the Waurika High School track teams at the Class A Regional Track Meet last Saturday at Alex.

The Eagles finished in third place with 61 points – while behind meet champion Snyder’s 97 points and Lomega’s 92 points.

The Lady Eagles also claimed third place with 50 points. Velma-Alma won the regional team title with 144 points.

Waurika will send nine male thinclads to the state meet this weekend, while the Lady Eagles will have six competing in the state track meet.

The Class A State Track Meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. on both days and the running events begin at 12 noon on both days.

The top three competitors in each event automatically qualify for a spot in the state meet.

Leading the way for the Eagles was the first-place finish by the 1,600-meter relay squad of Seth Cathey, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano.

It was the best time posted in the event by Waurika this season and the second year in a row Waurika claimed the regional title in the 1,600-meter relay.

The 800-meter relay team of Mora, Bryant, Nicolas Alvarado and Kevin Garcia earned a silver medal in the meet with a time of 1:36.10, which was also a season’s best mark.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Bryant, Bryson Hernandez, Octavio Gomez and Arelleno earned a bronze medal in the regional meet with a time of 9:21.28. This was the second best time posted by the Eagles in this event.

In the individual events, Mora earned a third-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 53.37, which was just ahead of teammate Seth Cathey’s time of 53.57.

Mora also scored in the long jump. His leap of 19-8 was good enough for sixth place.

Hernandez also placed in both the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters. His time of 5:19.75 in the 1,600 meters was good enough for sixth, while his time of 12:19.01 in the 3,200 meters also earned sixth place.

The Eagles send the three relay teams to state, while Mora will be competing at state in the 400 meters and as an additional qualifier in the long jump. Cathey’s finish in the 400 meters earned a berth at state in the event as an additional qualifier.

The Lady Eagles claimed one regional title in the shot put as Madison Roberson won the event with a toss of 35.7.5.

Roberson also finished second in the discus with a throw of 93-9.

In the 3,200 meters, Asia Smith earned the silver medal with a time of 12:55.52, while teammate Lexie Streeter finished fourth in the event with a time of 13:47.28. Streeter’s time was among the best among finishers at regional meets and she qualified as an additional qualifier.

Smith and Streeter also scored for the Lady Eagles in the 1,600 meters. Smith was fourth with a time of 6:07.01, which was good enough to qualify for state as an additional qualifier. Streeter finished fifth with a time of 6:12.44.

Sara Ballard was fourth in the long jump at Alex with a leap of 15-2.75 and that put her among the best finishers at regional meets across the state and earned her a berth at the state meet.

The other state meet qualifier was the 3,200-meter relay squad of Kaci Reynolds, Streeter, Smith and Dallas Fristoe. The time of 11:30.66 was just good enough to qualify the team as an additional qualifier.

Waurika did manage to score in the 1,600-meter relay with a sixth place finish. The team of Ballard, Smith, Kameron Ziecek and Reynolds recorded a time of 4:53.95, which was by far the best time of the season in the event for the Lady Eagles.

Other competitors for the Lady Eagles at regionals included Olivia Ralls, Brooke Williams and Madison Christian.

Waurika Readies for Regional at Duncan Meet

The Waurika track squads prepared for the regional with some tough competition at the Quanah Cox Invitational at Duncan last Thursday – just two days before the regional meet.

The Waurika boys scored 10 points to finish 12th among a large field that featured mainly Class 6A and Class 5A teams.

The Lady Eagles finished in a tie for 10th place with Altus with 14 points. The girls’ division also featured Class 6A and 5A squads.

On the boys’ side, the relays again led the way and accounted for all the team scoring.

The 3,200-meter relay team posted a time of 9:21.04 and while it was the top time of the season, it was sixth among the stiff competition.

The 1,600-meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 3:40.04, while the 800-meter relay team was also fifth with a time of 1:37.61.

The Lady Eagles were led by Roberson’s fourth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 37-4.5.

Smith earned fourth place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:36.14.

The 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay teams added to the point totals for the Lady Eagles. The 1,600-meter relay team was fifth with a time of 5:01.93, while the 3,200-meter relay squad was sixth with a time of 11:31.87.

Waurika and Ryan Thinclads Have Good Day at Waurika Meet

The weather for last Saturday’s Red River Invitational Track Meet hosted by Waurika was some of the best of the season and the results for both Ryan and Waurika reflected the better conditions.

Waurika girls finished second in the meet with 100 points behind Atoka’s 122 points.

Ryan’s girls finished fourth with 68 points well behind third-place Frederick that finished with 96 points.

Walters took the team title in the boys’ division with a dominating performance. The Blue Devils racked up 187 points outdistancing Riverside Indian School that finished with 148 points.

Waurika finished third in the team standings with 91 points and Ryan finished eighth in the 14-team meet with 33 points.

One of the highlights of the meet came in the 3,200 meter relay where Ryan and Waurika continued to battle for supremacy in the event as they have throughout this season.

This time, it was the Ryan Cowgirl squad of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter that took first-place honors with a time of 10:52.01. The time is a new school record for Ryan in the event.

Waurika managed second place in the event with a time of 10:58.70. Asia Smith, Lexie Streeter, Faith Roberson and Tallin Mora ran for the Lady Eagles in the event. It was easily the best time of the season turned in by this squad.

Waurika had three other relay teams to place in the meet – the primary factor for the Lady Eagles to earn runner up team honors.

The 800 meter relay team of Kaci Reynolds, Savana Ritter, Hope Cummings and Sara Ballard finished sixth with a time of 2:09.57.

That time was two seconds behind Ryan’s team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter who turned in a time of 2:07.28 to take fifth place.

The 400 meter relay team of Dallas Fristoe, Ritter, Reynolds and Ballard ran fifth for the Lady Eagles and turned in a time of 59.54.

In the 1,600 meter relay the Cowgirls and Lady Eagles battled again, but this time Frederick posted the winning time with the Cowgirl team of Harmon, York, Spangler and Carter finishing second with a time of 4:53.03 which is a new school mark.

The Lady Eagles finished fifth with the team of Smith, Streeter, F. Roberson and Mora posting a time of 5:10.28.

In the individual events, Madison Roberson had an outstanding day for the Lady Eagles as she earned two gold medals in the shot put and discus. Her shot put mark was 37-2, while the toss of the discus was 106-5.

Mora also won a gold medal for the Lady Eagles in the long jump with a leap of 16-2. Ballard earned a bronze medal with a jump of 15-0.

The other gold medal winner for the Lady Eagles was Smith in the 1,600 meters. She posted a time of 6:22.02 and Streeter was not far behind earning third place with a time of 6:28.37.

In the 800 meters, Smith finished fifth with a time of 2:46.71. Mora was sixth with a mark of 2:49.36 and F. Roberson finished eighth with a time of 3:11.99.

Ballard also scored for the Lady Eagles as she finished seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 13.86.

The Cowgirls did not have any titlist in the individual events, but Spangler did earn a silver medal in the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:14.33.

Harmon and Carter both placed for the Cowgirls in the 800 meters. Harmon was third with a timeof 2:44.04 and Carter was just behind in fourth place with a time of 2:44.87.

Spangler finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:39.24.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls was Katlyn Dabbs in the 300 meter hurdles with an eighth place finish. She recorded a time of 62.69. She is the first Cowgirl to score points in this event since the 1997 Southern Eight Conference track event.

The Eagles had another impressive day in the relay races. Waurika placed in every relay and won the 1,600 meter relay.

The team of Kevin Garcia, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano turned in a time of 3:42.98 to earn the gold medal just four-hundredths of a second behind the best time of the season.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Arellano, Bryant, Garcia and Bryson Hernandez finished second with a time of 9:18.58. It was Waurika’s best time in the event this season.

The 400 meter relay team of Garcia, Tu. Mora, Nic Alvarado and Bryant was third with a time of 59.54.

The same quartet also took third in the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:36.81. This was the best time of the season for the Eagles in this event.

Tu. Mora also won a gold medal in the 400 meters with his time of 53.62. He was the only gold medal winner for the Eagles on the day.

In the discus, Aaron Nitka finished fourth with a toss of 113-10, while Alvarado managed to finished fifth in the 100 meters with 11.5. Hernandez rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a seventh place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:32.44.

The Cowboys did not have any teams entered in the relays during the meet, but did have several outstanding marks in some of the individual events.

Walker Rawlings topped the performers for the Cowboys in the meet with two gold medals. He was first in the shot put with a toss of 41-10 and also first in the discus with a throw of 125-10.

Travis Fristoe had some impressive performances for the Cowboys. His mark of 19-3 in the long jump earned him fifth place and is the best mark in that event by a Ryan athlete since the 1985 Healdton invitational when Justin Savage posted a 20-6 jump.

Fristoe was also fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.25.

The Cowboy senior was also fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.86, while Landen Alexander also scored in the event for the Cowboys by finishing eighth with a time of 66.92.

Waurika Football Team Pep Rally

The community banded together Wednesday evening around 8:15 to cheer on the Waurika Eagles as they begin the playoff season this Friday evening at home against Cyril.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the pep rally tomorrow (Friday) at 2:00 pm at Waurika High School.

A number of players from the Waurika and Ryan basketball squads were honored by the Southern Eight Conference coaches recently.

Madison Roberson of Waurika was named the most valuable player in the conference for 2018. She led the Lady Eagles in scoring and rebounding and they claimed the Southern Eight Conference regular season crown with a perfect 5-0 mark.

Asia Smith was also an all-conference selection for the Lady Eagles. Smith was the second leading scorer and rebounder for Waurika.

Lily York, a sophomore for the Ryan Cowgirls, was selected as the co-offensive player of the year along with Grandfield’s Matti Clemmer.

Another sophomore, Juliet Spangler, was also named to represent Ryan on the all-conference squad.

The defensive player of the year honors went to Hollie Babel of Geronimo. She helped lead the Lady Blue Jays to a 14-15 record including a district title.

On the boys’ side, Waurika’s Cache Arellano was named to the all-conference team. Arellano was the scoring leader for the Eagles averaging 10.3 points a game and was also the leading rebounder averaging 8.3 rebounds a game.

No other boys from Waurika or Ryan were named to the squad all-conference squad.

The most valuable player of the conference for 2018 was Geronimo’s D’Marcus Crabtree. Crabtree was the ringleader on an experienced Geronimo squad that swept all its Southern Eight opponents during the regular season to claim the conference title.

The offensive player of the year was Geronimo’s Luke Riley.

Riley and Crabtree led the Bluejays to an outstanding season. The Blue Jays finished with a district title and were third in the Apache Tournament and the consolation champions at the Comanche County Tournament.

Geronimo closed the season with a 21-8 record after dropping a one-point decision to Sterling in the consolation bracket finals of the regional tourney. Riley led the Blue Jays in scoring against Sterling with 11 points, while Crabtree finished with 10 points in the season-ending loss.

Securing the defensive player of the year honors was Big Pasture’s Austin Frieling. The Rangers won a district title and fell to Lookeba-Sickles in the regional tourney finals last Saturday night but remain alive for another week.

Big Pasture opens area tourney play today (Thursday) at Cache and they will face Fox.

The Rangers managed a 4-1 mark in the Southern Eight Conference which was good for runner up honors.

The annual Southern Eight Conference All-Star game will be held Monday (February 26) at Temple. The girls’ contest will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow.

All the all-conference squad members will be competing in the game along with players selected as a conference all-star.

Representing the Cowgirls in addition to York and Spangler will be Samantha Good and the lone Cowgirl senior, Kenzie Lewis.

Joining Roberson and Smith from Waurika will be Lexie Streeter.

The girls’ team will be coached by Ryan’s Steve Spangler and Waurika’s Kalee Baxter.

Three Eagles will join their teammate Arellano in the game. They are Seth Cathey, Kevin Garcia and Turner Mora.

Representing the Cowboys in the game will be Dawson Tomberlin, a senior for the Cowboys, and junior Skylar Parkhill.

The conference was down somewhat in basketball this season especially on the girls’ side.

No girls’ team finished with a winning record with Geronimo leading the pack with 14 wins on the season. Big Pasture girls managed a 10-17 record and were the only other girls’ squad to record at least 10 wins.

Three boys’ teams posted winning records for the 2018 campaign. Big Pasture is the only team still alive and will finish with a winning record. Geronimo posted the best record of the conference teams with a 21-8 mark, while Grandfield also had a winning season at 14-11.

The conference consisted of only six schools this past year – Temple, Big Pasture, Geronimo, Ryan, Waurika and Grandfield. Frederick will join the Southern Eight Conference next season.

Individuals Led To Waurika’s Track Excellence During The 30’s

Track is one of those sports where team and individual performances are tied together.

A string of strong individual showings in a few events can go a long way in helping a team earn a meet title.

At Waurika in the decade of the 1930’s there was no shortage of outstanding individual performances.

A number of these individuals for the Eagles went on to participate in track in college. Or, track played a role in them earning a spot on collegiate football squads.

Results for the first four years of the decade are scarce, but a few performers can be identified as standouts for the Eagles.

In 1930, Charles Rhoades was a ringleader for the Eagle squads. He won the conference title in the pole vault and placed in the 440-yard dash, the mile run, the long jump, the javelin and the 880 in the county meet held at Ryan that year. He aided the Eagles to earn a team title over the Cowboys.

Rhoades was the champion at the 1931 county meet in the 440 and he placed in the 100, 200 and the pole vault as Waurika earned the team title.

One of the standouts during the 1932, 1933 and 1934 track seasons was Tillie Roach. He went on to give up track and play football at the University of Tulsa.

Roach was the conference champion in the 120 high hurdles at the conference meet in 1932 and he placed in the same event as well as the 200 yard dash at the OU Invitational.

Another outstanding performer for the Eagles beginning in 1933 was R.V. Wright. He won the 120 high hurdles at OU and had the best time in the state in that event at 16.1. He went on to star in track at Oklahoma A&M, where in 1939 he was the team captain for the Aggie track squad.

R.V. Wright also ran in an invitation only 120 high hurdles race during halftime of the 1939 Sugar Bowl football game.

He was also part of the seven-man team that was so successful in 1934. Roach was on this squad along with Roscoe Long, Tubby Daniel, Elmer Wright, Fuzzy Fowler and Hurschel Sparkman.

The mile relay team of Roach, R.V. Wright, Long and Daniels was the conference champion in the mile relay with a time of 3:33.7.

Sparkman won the 220 low hurdles, while Daniel won the 440 and Fowler earned the title in the mile run and the 880.

In the 120 high hurdles, R.V. Wright set a meet record in winning the race, while Sparkman and Roach were second and third respectively. Elmer Wright rounded out the meet champions with a first place finish in the discus.

Elmer Wright eventually went on to a track career at Connors State in Warner.

At the OU meet in 1934, Roach was the 220 yard low hurdles and R.V. Wright finished second and Sparkman was third. R.V. Wright also earned the title in the 120 yard high hurdles.

Fowler was a meet champion at OU in the 880 and the mile run and Elmer Wright was the champion in the discus, setting a meet record in the process.

In 1935, fewer results are available, but Sparkman began to establish himself as an outstanding hurdler. He won both the 200 low hurdles and the 120 high hurdles at the OU meet that season and set meet records along the way. Sparkman eventually went on to run track at Oklahoma A&M.

Sparkman, Fowler and Long returned for the 1936 track season.

Sparkman continued to dominate the hurdles events, while Fowler won the mile run in every meet he participated in during the 1936 season.

Jackie Taylor, who became an outstanding athlete at Waurika, began to make his mark during the 1936 season. Taylor earned a runner up spot in the 220 yard dash and third place in the 440 yard dash at the OU meet.

At OU that same season, Sparkman won both hurdles’ events and Fowler was a champion in the mile run.

Those performances spurred Waurika to the team title in 1936 at OU.

Taylor began to dominate in the sprints during the 1937 track season. He was a county champion in both the 100 and 220 and also the shot put.

Taylor won three events – the 100, 220 and the 440 – at the OU meet which would be equal to sweeping the state title in three events today, which is rarely done. Taylor also anchored the 888-yard relay to a first-place finish for Waurika at OU.

Sparkman won the county meet in the 200 low hurdles, but finished second to teammate Rex Lewis in the 120 high hurdles.

Oral Hairston was a key member of the 1937 squad as he also competed in the hurdles for the Eagles.

During the 1938 season, Hairston took over for Sparkman in the hurdles and was nearly as dominate. He won the 120 high hurdles at the Southwestern Exposition Invitational at Fort Worth and helped Waurika to the team title.

Hairston was the top point producer at the 1938 Southern Six Conference meet as he was responsible for 15.25 of Waurika’s title-winning 83.3 points.

At OU in 1938, Hairston was the champion in the 120 high hurdles and the hop, skip and jump event. He finished third in the 220 low hurdles.

Hairston finished out his career at Waurika in 1939. He was the conference champion in the 200-yard low hurdles and finished third in the 120 high hurdles. He also won the pole vault that season at the conference meet. Waurika won the 1939 conference title in overwhelming fashion.

These men and a number of others were the people responsible for Waurika becoming the “track capitol of Oklahoma” during the decade of the 1930’s.

….Roberson, Smith Place in State Meet for Lady Eagles

Spurred on by the 1,600-meter relay squad, the Waurika boys track squad finished in a tied for tenth place in the Class A State Track Meet last weekend at Western Heights High School.

It was an exciting finish to the 1,600-meter relay as Waurika was the runner up to Thomas in the event and they were separated by less than one second.

The team which won the regional title the week prior finished with a time of 3:32.42 – just behind the winning time of 3:31.78.

This earned the Eagles 16 points and put them in a tie with Lomega and Woodland in the Class A team standings. Thomas won the state title with 77 points.

The 1,600-meter relay team for the Eagles consisted of Seth Cathey, Turner Mora, Colton Bryant and Cache Arellano.

Waurika was the defending champion in this event having won the 1,600-meter relay in 2017.

For the rest of the Eagle participants at the state meet, the competition was fierce.

Two other relay teams – the 800 meter and 3,200 meter competed but did not place.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Arellano, Octavio Gomez, Bryson Hernandez and Bryant competed last Friday and turned in a time of 9:22.06, which was the third best time posted this season in the event by the Eagles.

The 800-meter relay team competed in the preliminaries on Friday, but failed to qualify turning in the 10th best time. Turner Mora, Bryant, Nick Alvarado and Garcia posted a time of 1:36.71. The time was just three-tenths of a second away from placing sixth in the event.

Mora also competed in the 400 meters and the long jump. Mora’s performance on Friday in the preliminaries of the 400 meters was short of qualifying for the finals.

Teammate Seth Cathey posted the ninth best time in the 400 meters – just missing the mark needed for qualify for the finals.

Mora also competed in the long jump, but his mark of 18-0.25 was well behind the rest of the 16-member field.

Madison Roberson and Asia Smith led the way for the Lady Eagles at the state meet.

Waurika finished with 10 points in the state meet and tied with Central High for 18th place. Boise City won the state title with 72 points.

Roberson capped an outstanding junior year with a third place finish in the shot put. Her throw of 35-1 was just five inches short of second place.

In the discus, Roberson failed to place for the Lady Eagles. Her best toss on the day was 83-10.

Smith managed to place in both the events in which she competed.

In the 1,600 meters, Smith posted a time of 5:39.98, which was significantly below her previous best for 2018. The Waurika freshman was fifth in the event.

Smith also finished fifth in the 3,200 meters. Her time of 12:37.07 was also a big improvement over the season’s best time for her.

Lexie Streeter also competed for the Lady Eagles in the 3,200 meters, but her time of 13:32.33 was well behind the time needed to place in the event.

Sara Ballard also competed for the Lady Eagles at the state meet in the long jump. Her best leap of 14-10.5 was the 11th best among the 16 competitors in the field.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Smith, Streeter, Dallas Fristoe and Kaci Reynolds posted a time of 11:30.28 but finished with the 12th best time and did not place. All four members of this team are freshmen.

All the competitors for the Lady Eagles at the state meet should return for the 2019 season.

Waurika Scores Huge Win over Wilson

The Waurika Eagles took a big step toward a district title last Friday (October 5th) night as they handed Wilson a 38-6 defeat at Skinny Stewart Stadium in Wilson.

Waurika is now 5-0 on the year and faces a match up with rival Ryan Friday night at Cy Sloan Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles do have four more district games remaining and anything can happen, but Wilson came into the game 5-0 and it was widely thought Waurika and Wilson would be the two teams to beat in the district.

Using a consistent rushing game Waurika took the opening kickoff and moved 54 yards on just seven plays for the first score of the night. Zachary Brown scored from five yards out and Turner Mora ran for the two-point conversion to give Waurika an 8-0 lead with 9:26 to play in the first quarter.

After the two teams exchanged punts, Wilson started a series at their own 45 with just 42 seconds left in the quarter. Trevor Schaff, the Wilson all-purpose senior athlete, rushed for three yards on the first play, but then went 52 yards for a score with just 26 seconds left to play.

The quarter ended with Waurika clinging to an 8-6 lead.

Waurika answered the Wilson threat with a 51-yard drive for a score. Waurika covered the distance in only four plays. Helped along by a Wilson personal foul penalty Mora capped the drive by covering the final nine yards. Mora ran for the two points and Waurika was in front, 16-6, with 11:40 to go before intermission.

Again the two teams exchanged punts, Wilson took possession at their own 20 after Mora’s punt went into the end zone.

Wilson’s offense sputtered and was hampered by two holding penalties and eventually Waurika forced a punt.

But, Waurika turned the ball back over to the home team on their own turnover of the night giving Wilson the ball at the Waurika 40.

The Eagles drove to the Waurika 17 but a penalty and a tackle for loss set up fourth down and Wilson could not convert.

Waurika took over on its own 20 and on the first play from scrimmage Brown swept right and then cut back against the grain into the open field and outran the defenders for an 80-yard touchdown. The run for two points failed, but Waurika was now in front, 22-6, with 2:37 left before intermission.

After a Wilson punt, Waurika took over at its own 38-yard line with just over one minute to play. A penalty set the ball back to the 49 and an incomplete pass left Waurika with a second and long.

Colton Bryant ran for the first down setting up a last minute score for Waurika.

Waurika lined up with everyone to the left and Mora took the snap in an empty backfield and went right and ran 33 yards untouched for the score. Bryant ran for the two-point conversion putting Waurika in front, 30-6, with only 34 seconds left in the half.

The second half became a defensive standoff with stagnant offense and penalties.

Late in the third quarter Waurika took possession at the Wilson 40-yard line. Overcoming one penalty Waurika moved down the field, but it took 12 plays to get the final score of the night.

With 11:52 left in the game, Mora capped the drive with a two-yard run for the score. Mora added the two-point conversion leaving Waurika comfortably in front, 38-6.

Neither team could mount a serious threat for the rest of the game.

Brown led the Waurika offense with 107 yards on just six carries. Bryant was just behind with 98 yards on 13 carries.

Waurika rolled up 295 yards on the ground and that was the entire offensive output on the night for Waurika. Wilson had 317 total yards on the night, but three turnovers and a number of penalties kept Wilson off the scoreboard most of the night.

EAGLE FLIGHTS: Waurika now holds a 51-20-3 series edge with Wilson and is 3-0 in meetings since both schools began eight-man play….Waurika has won six of the last seven meetings between the two schools….Waurika holds a 9-6 advantage in the series since the 2000 season….Waurika gained the large advantage in the series with a 13-game winning streak from 1979 to 1991 – the longest of this season…Wilson and Waurika have met a total of 74 times since the first meeting in 1921, which is the second most games against a single opponent in school history….Waurika and Ringling have met 88 times on the gridiron….The 32-point win for Waurika is the largest margin of victory since a 46-7 win in 2010.

Ryan Basketball Squads Wrap Up Regular Season in a Flurry

It was a mad dash to the end of the regular season for the Ryan Cowboys and Cowgirls as they played four contests in eight days in preparation to enter the post-season.

On Tuesday night the Cowboys and Cowgirls dropped a doubleheader at Empire after having swept Temple last Friday night on Senior Night on Raymon West Court.

Last Thursday, the two teams traveled to Turner and split a doubleheader and a week ago Tuesday, Ryan dropped both contests to Geronimo at home.

The Cowboys will enter district play with a 5-16 mark, while the Cowgirls hold a 7-14 record.

The seven wins by the Cowgirls is more victories than the previous two seasons combined.

Here’s a brief look at each contest from the last seven days of action:

Empire 59, Ryan 40 (Boys)

The Bulldogs and Cowboys battled to a 9-9 tie after one quarter, but Empire heated up in the second quarter to seize control of the contest.

The Bulldogs opened the second quarter on a 14-0 run and it wasn’t until Joseph Martin connected on a layup with 4:08 before halftime that Ryan was able to narrow the gap to 23-11.

Empire quickly answered with a bucket and scored six straight and was never threatened again.

The Bulldogs took advantage of 11 Ryan turnovers in the quarter and held a 35-13 advantage at intermission.

The Cowboys trailed 54-24 at the end of the third quarter, but were able to trim the deficit by outscoring the Bulldogs, 16-5, in the final quarter.

Grayson Tomberlin tied his season high with 17 points to lead the Cowboys. He was the only player in double figures.

Empire 59, Ryan 49 (Girls)

The lack of depth that has plagued the Cowgirls through most of the 2018 season reared its ugly head again at Empire.

The Cowgirls battled with the Class 2A Lady Bulldogs through most of the game, but could not finish.

Both teams were tied at 13 after one quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs forged to a seven-point advantage with 3:29 left in the first half.

Juliet Spangler completed a three-point play to trim the lead back to 26-22 with 2:53 before halftime and Kenzie Lewis’ layup with six seconds left brought the Cowgirls to within three at 29-26 going into the break.

Samantha Good opened the third quarter with a three-point basket to tie the score, Spangler connected on a short turnaround jumper and Good hit a short jumper to give the Cowgirls a 33-29 lead with 4:52 left in the third quarter.

Layups by MacKenzie Keith and Lily York gave Ryan its biggest lead of the game at 37-29 at the four-minute mark.

However, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Cowgirls 13-3 the rest of the third quarter to hold a 42-40 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Cowgirls pulled to within one point on two occasions in the fourth quarter – the last with 6:05 left in the game when York converted on one of two free throws.

The Lady Bulldogs pulled away from there outscoring the Cowgirls 14-5 to secure the win.

Missed free throws again hampered the Cowgirls as they missed nine attempts from the charity stripe in the final quarter.

York led the Cowgirls in scoring with 15 points, while Good added 11 points. Empire’s Korie Allensworth, a sophomore, led the Lady Bulldogs with 20 points.

Ryan 67, Temple 38 (Boys)

It was a good final home appearance for four Ryan seniors – River Williams, Tate Kimbro, Dawson Tomberlin and Martin.

The Cowboys got off to a 12-5 advantage after one quarter and the Tigers narrowed the gap to 14-10 on Quinzell Tisdale’s two free throws at the 4:25 mark of the second quarter.

However, from there the Cowboys took control and close the half on an 11-0 run to lead 27-11 at the half.

Skyler Parkhill converted a traditional three-point play with just 2.5 seconds left in the third quarter to give Ryan its largest lead of the game – 52-19.

The Cowboys overcame the outstanding performance by Tisdale and he dominated play for the Tigers. He finished with 33 of the team’s 38 points.

Ryan had five players in double figures with Martin leading the way with 15 tallies.

The Cowboys dominated the boards with a 56-26 advantage and many of those came on the offensive end of the court as Ryan outscored Temple, 18-0, on second chance points.

The 56 rebounds ties the school record for most rebounds in a game. The Cowboys hauled down 56 boards in a 2006 game against Grandfield.

The three highest scoring games for the Cowboys in the 2018 season have come against the Tigers and Ryan has now won seven of the last eight meetings with Temple.

Ryan 54, Temple 8 (Girls)

The Cowgirls said goodbye to their lone senior – Lewis – in resounding fashion by totally dominating an outmanned Lady Tiger squad.

The Cowgirls overcame the physical play of the Lady Tigers for a record-setting win. The eight points scored by Temple ties the school record for fewest points in a game by an opponent set in a 1946 game with Sugden.

The Cowgirl defense was stifling throughout the game as Temple did not score a field goal until 44 seconds remained in the third quarter.

Temple was whistled for 25 fouls in the contest – 12 of them in the first quarter. The Cowgirls, however, could only hit seven of 18 three throws in the quarter, but it helped them gain a 12-1 lead and at that point the game was essentially decided.

The overwhelming victory was secured despite a less than stellar shooting performance by the Cowgirls. Ryan was only 14 of 34 from the charity stripe for the game (41%) and connected on only 18 of 61 from the field – a dismal 29.5%.

But, the Cowgirls played nearly flawless in most other categories. Ryan had a season-low six turnovers, while Temple recorded 27.

Ryan outrebounded the Lady Tigers, 52-27, to set the school record for most rebounds in a game. The previous mark was 43 set last year against Temple.

The rebound edge helped the Cowgirls own a 12-0 advantage on second chance points.

The 54 points scored was the highest point total this season for the Cowgirls.

York led the Cowgirls in scoring with 21 points and she contributed four steals. Good added 11 points and Spangler contributed eight points and led the Cowgirls in rebounding with 13 boards.

This was only the second time this season the Cowgirls have won two games in a row.

Turner 40, Ryan 23 (Boys)

The Cowboys suffered from cold-shooting from the field and could not stay up with the Falcons.

Turner jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained the margin at the half taking an 18-12 lead into the locker room.

The teams battled on even terms through the third quarter as the Falcons clung to a 27-21 lead, but outscored the Cowboys, 13-2, in the final quarter to secure the win.

The Cowboys were without two players – including one starter.

Andrew Villerreal was the leading scoring for the Cowboys with eight points.

The loss to Turner snapped a three-game winning streak over the Falcons.

Ryan 40, Turner 30 (Girls)

Despite shooting only nine of 19 from the free throw line, the Cowgirls snapped a three-game losing streak with a big victory over the Lady Falcons.

The Cowgirls built a 24-19 lead at the half and then got two critical treys from Good to help extend the lead to 33-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

Good returned to the Cowgirl squad after missing six games with an injury. She led the Cowgirls in scoring with 15 points – one of three Cowgirls in double figures.

Spangler and York each had 10 tallies for the Cowgirls.

The win avenged an earlier 19-point loss to the Lady Falcons in the Healdton Tournament and it ended a five-game losing streak to Turner.

Geronimo 56, Ryan 37 (Boys)

The Cowgirls fell behind 16-4 in the first quarter against the talented Blue Jays and were never really in the contest.

Geronimo increased the lead with 29-10 at the half and held the Cowboys at bay in the second half as each team scored 27 points.

Brock Smith and Villerreal each had eight points to lead the Cowboys in scoring.

The Cowboys have dropped four of the last five meetings with Geronimo.

Geronimo 45, Ryan 33

It was another tough night shooting for the Cowgirls in this fifth straight loss to the Lady Blue Jays.

Geronimo raced to a 26-5 advantage at the half thanks to six three-pointers – four of which came in the second quarter.

The Cowgirls could not keep pace as they connected on only one field goal in the first half.

After trailing 21-6 heading into the fourth quarter, the Cowgirls somewhat found the range and outscored Geronimo, 21-6 to cut the final margin to 12 points.

York paced the Cowgirls in scoring with 16 points – including two treys and four of four from the free throw line.

The Cowgirls have suffered from a lack of depth the entire season and only suited six players for this contest.

Southern Eight Basketball Honorees Shine in All-Star Game

The annual Southern Eight Conference All-Star basketball games were played at Temple last Monday night and both games came down the wire.

In the girls’ contest, the White team made up of players from Big Pasture, Temple and Ryan came out on top, 50-49, over the Dark team that consisted of players from Waurika, Grandfield and Geronimo.

In the nightcap, the Dark squad (players from Big Pasture, Waurika and Ryan) used 11 three-pointers, including one in the final seconds, to get a 64-63 win over the White team which was comprised of players from Geronimo, Temple and Grandfield.

Steve Spangler, the head coach of the Ryan girls, directed the White team, while Kalee Baxter of Waurika coached the Dark team.

In the girls’ game, the White team overcame the 18-point performance of Waurika’s Madison Roberson, to get the victory.

The White team got off to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter thanks to Ryan’s Juliet Spangler’s five points.

However, the Dark team came back in the second frame to narrow the lead to 30-28 at the break.

The Dark managed to grab the lead at 43-41 heading into the fourth quarter, but it was the scoring efforts of the Ryan duo of Lily York and MacKenzie Lewis that rallied the White team to the victory.

Topping the scorers for the White team was Ryan’s Samantha Good with nine points. Spangler finished with seven, York had six and Lewis added five points.

Nine of the 10 members of the White team scored.

Adding to Roberson’s game-high point total was Grandfield’s Laylee Ramirez that totaled 13 points in the losing effort.

Asia Smith of Waurika contributed two points, while the Lady Eagles’ Lexie Streeter played but did not score.

The Cowboys’ Judd Matthes coached the Dark team to the narrow victory thanks to Big Pasture’s Dalton Groves’ long-range trey with three seconds to play to decide the contest.

The Dark team managed a 14-11 lead after the first quarter, but the White squad snared a 30-29 advantage at the half.

The Dark outscored the White, 17-15, in the third quarter to hold a slim one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams battled on even terms in the fourth quarter with Groves’ trey ultimately giving the Dark team the win.

The Dark team was able to gain the victory thanks to four three-pointers in the final quarter including two from Ryan’s Skylar Parkhill.

Groves and his Big Pasture teammate Conner Boydston led the Dark team with 11 points apiece.

Parkhill finished with eight points and his teammate, Dawson Tomberlin, added three points.

Among the Waurika players, Cache Arellano had eight points, while Kevin Garcia and Seth Cathey each totaled seven tallies. Turner Mora scored two points to round out the Waurika contingent.

Ryan’s Tomberlin and Lewis were each awarded a $250 scholarship by the conference.
