It’s very hot and dry around here.  I am thankful that I have an indoor job. I don’t think I could stand to be outside in this heat. 

I attended the city council meeting last Tuesday evening.  There were several younger folks that attended that had been placed on the agenda for the evening.  Sherry and Eddy Pewitt were there to discuss some points of interest with the council.  Dylan Sheffield and Johnny Kimbro also discussed some points of interest to benefit our town’s appearance.  They got together some folks to do some cleaning up of our local business district.  They were working hard this Saturday afternoon. They cleaned the debris from around the pipes under the ramps out here on Washington Street.  They did a lot of work on the flower garden located under to mural on the highway.  They cleaned the area around the drain at the corner in front of the mural. They filled in some pot holes located in our alley behind the north side of Washington business area. They all worked so hard and during the hottest part of the day.  Thanks to all of the folks that participated during this cleaning event.  It was so good to see that there are young people that are taking pride in our community.  Things can get done when there are groups of people that can all work together to better our communities. The city council also approved Macy Wright setting up a firework stand within the city limits.  The council also discussed the need to hire a part time employee during the summer months.  They said this job would pay $10.00 per hour and would allow up to 20 hours per week.  Anyone interested in part time employment, go in to Ryan City Hall and fill out an application. 

This Sunday is Father’s Day and also the day set for the Ryan Cemetery dinner fund raiser.  There are tickets being sold at City Hall for a Yeti cooler and cap, and 2 rifles.  The tickets for the raffle are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00.  Go into City Hall if you would like to purchase some tickets.

There will be another sidewalk sale in downtown Ryan on July 6th.  If you missed the first one, then folks will have another chance to check out our local merchants sale items. 

Our Methodist Church members got to meet our new pastor, Christy Clark and her husband Mark,  and son Conrad this past Sunday.  This was Christy’s first Sunday as pastor in our church.  She also preaches at Temple Methodist Church.  We look forward to having her as our pastor. 

I took Brionna back to the Ranch Sunday after church.  She had a little longer stay this time.  I picked her up Saturday evening a week ago so that she could go to church and see Sandy  for the last time serving as our church pastor. She was also wanting to get to meet our new pastor, so, I just let her stay all week so she would be home for both occasions. She got to go to lunch with Terri and Chuck this past Thursday at Circle Dee’s. 

Kim’s news for this week:

Foxy and I have been riding Ruffy Tuffy every day.  They both got their baths on Sunday.  Every morning I’m still able to drink coffee at the Cowboy College Table.  Everyone have a blessed week.

Have a Happy Father’s Day and hope a lot of folks will come out to the school for lunch on that day to help support our Ryan cemetery.  Have a blessed week.  Pray for rain and for each other.

Fiber Optic Internet Coming to Ryan?

There was not an empty seat at the monthly Ryan Town Council meeting held this past Tuesday evening at Ryan City Hall. 

Of all the items discussed, perhaps the one that caused the most excitement was the possibility of Fiber Optic Internet coming to homes and businesses in Ryan. 

Dick Segress, the owner of Terral Telephone addressed the council seeking cooperation in beginning the process of laying fiber optic cable within the city limits.

Terral Telephone has already surveyed Ryan and is willing to share their engineering details with the city to ensure that the cable laid will not interfere with existing infrastructure.

The council will consider the matter more fully at the next meeting but the prospect looks positive.

After his address, we asked if he was interested in bringing high speed internet to Waurika and he said, “most definitely!”

The usual business of approving the minutes of previous meetings and the paying of bills were approved. 

The treasurers report was approved. 

Members of the Ryan School Board and Superintendent of Schools, Marcus Chapman, were present. 

They asked the council if the town would consider serving as the authority having jurisdiction for the purpose of outsourcing fire and building permit inspections. 

A representative of the construction company working on the school was present to explain the process of applying for jurisdiction and the benefits of doing so. 

The state does allow third party inspections. 

The state Fire Marshall will come in and complete his own inspection once fifty-percent of the construction is completed. 

Allowing the town of Ryan to conduct the inspections will save time and money. It sometimes takes up to four months for a state Fire Marshall to come and inspect a building. If a third party completes the inspection, it can be done in a couple of weeks. 

It was explained that the town can apply for the authority to conduct these inspections through a qualified third party. 

This is a process that many communities across Oklahoma are adopting to speed up the construction process. 

The construction company representative assured the council that they would cover all the town’s expenses in applying and acquiring the proper paperwork to assume jurisdiction. 

A question the council members had, of course, was liability. Their concern was if an issue were to arise after the construction was complete, who assumes liability?

The construction representative assured the council that the third party inspector is not relaxing the state codes in any way. They would just be speeding up the inspection process. 

It was decided that the council would investigate the issue and get back to the school as soon as possible. It was stated they could even have a special meeting if necessary. 

The company is wanting to begin work on the school foundation in ten days.

Next, Dylan Sheffield representing the Ryan Community Regeneration asked for permission to use the Ryan Public Park on October 13th. 

On that date they will hold the first annual Fall Festival. 

The Ryan FFA will be serving hot dogs at the festival as a fundraiser. There will be live music and games. It will be a time of getting together and celebrating the fall season creating a sense of community. 

Dylan is also the newest member of the New Jefferson County Development Authority.   

Ater that, Resolution 2018-07 was passed that forbids any changes to city owned property without first obtaining permission. 

During the Ryan Public Utility Authority meeting the council members passed resolution 2018-08 to establish guidelines and fines for manipulation, tampering, disconnection, etc., of town property and facilities, including utility meters by an unauthorized individual. 

According to the resolution anyone tampering with an electric or water meter if they are not authorized to do so will be fined up to $50 per day of occurrence. 

This brought many questions from the audience. 

One such question concerned what to do if a residence had a water leak? The council members suggested installing a water shut off valve on the residence side of the pipe leading from the meter to the building. 

If one is not installed, city hall will need to be notified during a water leak and they will come and shut off the water. 

The same would be true if an electrical meter needed to be shut off. Only city employees can fix or adjust meters. 

Mayor Grantham advised that this measure was being taken because in the past meters have been broken by home owners who then expected the city to pay for damage. 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

What a week we now have behind us. We skipped fall and now we are having more winter-like weather. We had more rain this past weekend and are expecting more for this week. I got out Saturday morning in my car to make a couple of deliveries and decided I would drive over to the south bridge of Beaver Creek. Boy, that was a mistake! Water was barreling over the bridge, not from the water below the bridge, but, from the water coming down the hill across the road. I made my way over to the turn in for the city dump and sat there for a couple of minutes. I rationalized in my mind that if it began raining any harder, I was not going to be able to get back down that road in my car. I was able to turn around and made it back up the hill to make my deliveries, safely. I won’t ever do that again! Our earth is so saturated in this area now, that all of our moisture we are getting now is staying on top of the soil and running off to the nearest creek or river. Several bridges around our county have washed away. Edna Grantham lives out east of town and said the bridge between her house and the house of Iva and John Roark was not there anymore. I had water coming under my arch from my neighboring building here in town Saturday morning, too. 

The dinner for Sammy Overstreet surely brought in a crowd of people. Most of the Givens family came back home for this event. Lolly and I got there just as they ran out of spaghetti. We just patiently waited for them to bring out some more. There were a lot of workers there for the dinner. We had to sit in the front dining area because the back area was completely full. That says something right there. 

We have a celebrity in our midst around here. I missed the news broadcast on channel 7 out of Lawton last Wednesday at 6:00, but there was a news team from Lawton that interviewed Sarah Tyus last week. Sarah has been home schooled by her mother, most of her life since she was school age. She did attend Ryan School for a little while, before her mother decided she would teach her the necessary curriculum in a home school program, herself. Donna has done a good job with her. She has had some extracurricular activities that she has participated in as well. Sarah has been active in showing sheep with the Ryan FFA kids. She has also excelled in her archery skills. She has done very well for herself and I know her parents, Donna and Kevin, are very proud of her. Sarah is 16 years old now and I was asking her about whether she had a drivers license yet. She said she does not, and really doesn’t have a great desire to drive anyway. She will someday soon enough, I am sure. I am sure, too, that we will be hearing more about the accomplishments of this young lady as time progresses. Way to go, Sarah!

Kim’s news for this week: 

Last week I got to see Bryson Hernandez in a cross country track meet. It is so great. Next week he goes to State. Foxy went and didn’t complain about the rain. I’m still receiving knowledge from the Cowboy College.

Well, we have had a blessed week, weather wise this past week.  We have again seen extreme temperatures from the 90s one day to the 50s the next.  Winds that would nearly blow you away. We nearly had some rain Friday morning.  I woke up and it was lightning, but, when I turned the light on outside, the concrete was dry.  Maybe this week we will have better chances of precipitation coming possibly Friday and Saturday.  I am hoping that we won’t see anymore freezing temperatures until next fall.  I got out yesterday and mowed my weeds.  I didn’t see any grass among what I was mowing.  The plant with the little purple flowers was abundant, but, it looked like it was turning brown.  

I went to Amarillo Saturday morning and the winds were blowing at more than 30 mph.  I made it over to see Randy and made it back home again safely Saturday evening.  

There are 2 wedding showers scheduled this month.  Morgan Good’s shower is Sunday, April 29, from 2-4 pm at the Ryan Church of Christ.  They are registered at Dillard’s, Target, and Walmart.  Also, on April 22, at 2:00 pm at the Ryan First Baptist Church, Larimey Curtis and his fiancee. There is a hostess box for each of the 2 couples at the Ryan Drug Store if folks would like to just put in some money for either of the couples.

The Ryan food bank will be distributing food on April 28th.  

We received news from our Methodist District Superintendent last week, that our pastor, Sandy Shepherd is going to be assigned  up around the Tulsa area to two new churches for her.  She expressed a need to be relocated if possible, to be closer to her mother, that has had some concerning health issues.  We are sad to lose her, but we are certainly glad that she will be in a location that will get her closer to her mom.  Mark, her husband, has been quite an asset in our church, too.  He has sung some solos on several occasions, and is certainly blessed with a beautiful voice.  Our church doesn’t know at this time what pastor will be assigned to our church.  We will be in prayer for  receiving our pastor, whomever they assign us.

Kim’s news for this week:

Foxy is a cowdog chick.  Riding Ruffy Tuffy is her best trick.

Cowboys don’t cry, Ride Foxy ride.

Her favorite pastime of all is playing with her silly-ball.  She can raise her paw and praise God!

Maris Blanchard: Restoring Historical Mural

The next time you are driving into Ryan, Oklahoma, take a look to the right before you come to downtown. The 22-year old Chisholm Trail scenery that has always been an eye-catching welcome suddenly appears a little different. Its subtle change might have you turn around and crawl back by. The Chisholm Trail mural!! Something’s different. The sage-covered hillside scenery has a focused depth to it. And the cattle, the cowboys and horse-drawn wagon come alive on the forefront of the dimensional landscape. To passersby, it’s beautiful and a nice addition to the town. To the people of Ryan, it means so much more. 

What started out as a pipe dream for the Ryan Regeneration Group became reality during the month of July. The talk began in early 2018 to develop a plan to refurbish the 40-foot long mural depicting a scene from the glory days of the historic Chisholm Trail. A path laid by drovers, cowboys and the cattle they ran from deep in Texas through Ryan and into Kansas throughout the last half of the 19th century. The mural is the work of M.H. Henry, an artist, a passionate advocate of preserving the Trail’s history and a resident of Bowie, Texas. With the structural assistance of Hershel Shofner, the sign was erected in 1997. This mural stamped Ryan’s presence in southern Oklahoma and was a proud addition for the citizens of the town. The timing was perfect, with hundreds of former students pouring into town for the Ryan High School reunion in September. Everyone was in awe of the work and happy to know that our history would now be shared with everyone that passed through the town.

Over the next two decades, the mural stood strong, but began to take on the effects of the intense weather of southern Oklahoma. With the birth of the Regeneration group, thoughts began to come into words about assisting with its refurbishment and longevity. The suggestion came up to find an artist to bring the mural back to life. But not only that, find someone that shares the passion of beautifying the town. Maris Blanchard, granddaughter to Theresa Blanchard, was approached by the group to see if she would consider taking on this timely task. As recalled, the group did not even have to fully ask her help, as Maris excitedly interrupted and said, “I would LOVE to help you with the mural.” It was a joyous occasion not only for the Regeneration group, but just as much for Maris. Her father, Bobby Blanchard, was a 1975 graduate of Ryan. Back in her childhood, Maris came back to Ryan frequently with her Dad. She and her Dad shared the love of going out on land northeast of Ryan to hunt for cow skulls or any skulls she could find. Along with spiders, bugs and critters that she could talk her Dad into taking home. Maris found this would be one of her many outdoor passions that still carries on to today. Bobby passed away in 2007 and with this, Maris’ memories of Ryan started to fade over the years.

At the beginning of the project, Maris began the preparation and studied the work of Mr. Henry so that her efforts would accent his vision. All the way down to the brands on the cattle that depicted the symbol of ranches in the local area. Maris unexpectedly and pleasantly found help as the citizens of Ryan became her eyes, ears and cold-water providers during the intensely hot days of late July. Work on the project started early in the morning and went on till sundown. What could have been an arduous task became a celebration as she moved slowly and carefully through bringing the wonderful scene back to life. The town was vibrant with talk at Stick’s and the Parlor about the young lady working on our mural. It did not take anyone long to find out that Maris invited everyone in to the scene going on at the junction of Highways 32 and 81. Among the topics of interest were Maris’ other hobbies and line of work such as taxidermy and making organic home décor themed around animal cadavers and skeletal remains. Many were intrigued and Maris was endless with conversation as she learned hunting in this part of Oklahoma is right up there with football as a favorite sport.  

Now with the task complete and the mural looking like new again, the Ryan Regeneration group share the joy of their pipe dream becoming a reality. And as the folks of Ryan cherish anew this testament to our heritage, the warmth and joy of knowing that the spirit of the town stretches far past the limits of the ranches and fields surrounding the city. 

A very special thanks go to so many of the hard-working, fun loving members of the Ryan Generation group. A special thanks to Sherry and Eddie Pewitt, Heather and Crosby Casebolt, Dennis Underwood and many others for showing up and sharing time with Maris. A very, very special Thank You goes out to Walker and Linda Ryan. Not only for providing the scaffolding, which without it, the project could not at all have been completed. But for your warm-hearted, incredible hospitality each day this project was going on. Maris said that she has found her second home in Ryan and a new extended family that would make her Dad proud.

 It’s been another awesome week and we did receive a bit of rain on Wednesday and nearly again on Thursday. Our temperatures are nearly where they should be at this time of year, but, as we Okies know, that can change at any minute. We have still seen some lows nearing the very low 40s, but, those might be behind us now. We have some pretty good chances for rain this week before the paper goes to print.  

I was sorry to hear about the passings  of Billie Johnson and her brother, Weldon Fuller. Prayers to their families during this time of loss.  

I picked up Brionna Thursday and she got to spend some time Friday morning with her friends Kim, Foxy, and Ruffy Tuffy. Brionna got to spend a few minutes in the store Friday, but, the rest of the day she spent it visiting at the bank, or with Crystal and Tammy, or with Morgan. She got her hair cut Friday morning by Morgan. She did a good job. Saturday we went to Wichita Falls and ate out, did some shopping, went to see the movie A Wrinkle in Time, then headed to Nocona to spend some time with Mom. Sunday morning we got ready for church and stopped and picked up Ben Arneson so he could go to Sunday school and church with us. I made a loaf of bread for Communion, and the remainder of the dough, I made cinnamon rolls. It was Ben, Brionna, and myself attending class. Edna called that she wasn’t going to make it because she had to go help Natalie and Ken with some cattle. Butch had told me earlier in the week that he wasn’t going to be in town for the weekend. He and Lily went to Oklahoma City to see family members up around the City. Dana wasn’t at church or Sunday school because she had made a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Lolly came in around 10:30 and told me that she had gotten a phone call that Brother Bob Waitman had passed away that morning.  I was so sorry to hear that news, but, it sounded like he passed peacefully from this life.  He has been a very well respected and loved man in and around and beyond our community.  Prayers to all of the Waitman family during this difficult time. The Crossbrand Cowboy Church had their church service as planned, but, they had a pastor that filled in for Brother Bob on this particular Sunday. 

Brionna and I attended the wedding shower for Morgan Good and her fiancé, Jim Roberts. They received a lot of nice gifts and there was a good crowd there that attended their celebration. 

Sunday evening, Brionna and I attended church in Terral at the Assembly of God Church.  The First Baptist Church of Terral and Terral Assembly of God Church met together for food and fellowship. They meet together when there is a 5th Sunday.  I had been asked to attend this service, first by Cecilia Harnois, and next by Keith, the Terral Assembly of God Pastor. There was a lot of good food, then we met in the sanctuary for fellowship. There was a lot of really good music. Terral has a lot of really talented folks that are willing to get up there and share their talents with a pretty large group of folks. Geneva played the piano for the congregational singing. It was very enjoyable and we can look forward to the next 5th Sunday get-together in August, where the meeting place will be at the Terrap First Baptist Church.  I took Brionna back to Bowie after the service. 

Kim’s news for this week:

When I rode Sunday, it was time for fly spray. Ruffy Tuffy wouldn’t mind, he was shaking his head all the time. So, today, I did spray. It was beautiful weather, Ruffy Tuffy did better.

Praise the Lord! We received some measurable rain Sunday afternoon.  The pavement is still wet and conditions are cloudy.  I haven’t mowed in 3 weeks now.  There is nothing to mow.  Our grass is laying dormant on the ground.  Plants have had to be watered from the water hoses. God’s blessings of rain far surpass any garden hoses.  He just hasn’t seen fit to send much our way yet.  Our temperature was 94 degrees around 3:00 pm yesterday and when the front blew in, it was 74 degrees. The temperature stayed there all night.  I got out and watered the plants this morning, anyway.  We desperately need rain around Ryan.  The grasshoppers have really begun to move into town again. 

 I went over to see Mom Saturday afternoon after going to Wichita Falls.  I spent some time with her and was on my way back to Ryan on Highway 81 just north of Ringgold and I could see an animal beginning to cross the highway.  It’s body was slim and low to the ground, and I assumed it was a coyote.  I was getting closer to the animal and it was slowing down and so was I when we met, face to face, on the highway.  It was a tiny baby deer, and I saw no sign of its’ mother.  It just stood there looking at me.  My car was dead still, and I honked at the baby deer, it didn’t even move at first, then I honked again, and it began running back from the direction it had originally started crossing.  Its’ little feet were slipping on the pavement of the highway as it was trying to move quickly to get away from this foreign object that it was facing.  I know there are an abundance of deer around our area, but, my heart went out for this little guy or gal.  I hope it found a safe place and still has its’ mother to care for it somewhere out there.

Kim’s news for this week:

Yes, it is true Ruffy Tuffy got a straw hat, too.

Every morning I go ride with Foxy by my side.

Then Foxy and I go to the ball park, where she can play ball and bark.

Jefferson County Says Goodbye to a Coaching Legend

A man who has not only secured his place in local sports history, but has also secured a place in the hearts and lives of those who knew him and played for him passed away Sunday.

Raymon West will be remembered for his impact on the world of sports in Jefferson County.

He will be remembered for his contribution as the principal at Ryan High School.

He will remembered for championships.

He will be remembered as a great husband and father.

He will be remembered for being a great man.

Next week, Trey Smart will be writing a proper memorial to this coaching legend. 

Until then, we just want to say that you will be missed Coach West.

Thank you for the memories and your contributions to our lives.

 If you have been paying attention, you will have noticed a young lady perched atop the scaffolding by the mural on Highway 81.  Her name is Maris Blanchard, she is the daughter of the late Bobbie Blanchard and the granddaughter of Teresa Blanchard.  We have all become accustomed to its faded appearance but I believe that if you look at it now or wait until she is finished, I think you will agree that it looks much better.  Ms. Blanchard is doing a wonderful job and she told me that it means a lot to her to be able to do this for her fathers home town and also that she has fond memories of coming to Ryan to visit when she was younger.  Thank you Maris.

 Ryan Fire Chief Randal Garcia tells me that they had a good turn out for the first annual Stop, Drop and Run 5K fun run and walk.  It is great to see so many people participating.  They had hamburgers for lunch after the run but I was unable to attend as I had a family reunion to attend at the same time but I bet the food was good.

 The reunion mentioned in the above paragraph was a lot of fun.  Mostly we sat around talking and eating.  Some of our relations from the east side of the county as well as some nice folks from Texas came to visit.  Bob Cates started off life in Ryan but his family left after a fire destroyed the family business.  Bob told me his brother, Utah Cates (is that a cool name or what), worked for the railroad.  I am hoping that some of my elders around town can enlighten me in regard to the Cates family.

 Wednesday was the last day for the children’s reading group here in Ryan because school will be starting in a couple of weeks.  T J Dewbre tells me that there are already plans in the works for a possibly expanded reading group next year.  As you can imagine this is a cause that is near and dear to my heart.  I believe that the earlier that you expose children to reading and books the better.  I am taking this opportunity to thank a few folks, Michelle for getting the ball rolling, TJ, Heidi Townsend, Emily Smith, Amanda Reagan, Cheryl Carter and the town council (I know that I am missing a bunch of people but you know who you are), thank you for picking the ball up and running with it.

 It is easy to let personal feelings color our thinking, but all of these stories, the mural, the fire department and the children’s reading group are examples of people working together for the common good.  Call me Pollyanna if you like but I think things are looking up in Ryan.

 The book I am reading is called “Dancing At the Harvest Moon” by K.C. McKinnon.  The harvest moon of the title is a dance hall and eating establishment open seasonally on a lake in Canada.  This is a tale of love and loss, re-birth and starting over when life kicks you in the teeth as happens from time to time.  I am not sure from whom I acquired this book but so far it has been good reading.  The art work alone makes it worth looking through.  I frequently get books given to me.  Sometimes it is a case of someone cleaning out a cupboard and sometimes it is hey I just read this and you need to read it as well.  In ether case the gifts are greatly appreciated, I can’t think of a better gift than a book.

 I am thinking about a time when my younger sister came home from college to visit and when she walked through the door, I’m stretched out in the living room floor listening to “Freebird” and reading a volume of Walt Whitman that she had given me.  This comes to mind because as I sit here writing this I have music playing, it is hard to type and rock out as well. (I have my earplugs in so to anyone watching, I must appear spastic). Other than the first song, none of the music was selected by me, so I have run down the list of several great songs, from “Sweet Home Alabama” to “Can’t You See” to “With a Little Help from My Friends” and now it’s “Freebird”.  I’m not sure why books and music go together for me, maybe it’s the story telling inherit in both.  I’ll see if my sister remembers.
