Two Ryan graduates and one Waurika graduate are set to compete in the annual Oklahoma Eight-Man Football Association’s all-star game in Miami which will feature nearly 80 of the top eight-man seniors from all parts of Oklahoma.

The contest kicks off Saturday at 6 p.m. at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M’s Red Robertson Field. Game tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the gate. Concessions and game day merchandise will be available for purchase.

This annual event was designed to recognize and honor the finest eight-man football players throughout Oklahoma. Around 3,000 fans from across Oklahoma are expected to attend the game.

Dawson Tomberlin and Tate Kimbro of Ryan along with Waurika’s Seth Cathey will be competing for the Gold team in the annual showcase of eight-man football talent in Oklahoma.

In addition two Ryan cheerleaders, Holland Carter and Laken DeBoard will be part of the cheerleader squads for the game.

Serving as a counselor for the week-long all-star game preparation is Ryan assistant coach Tony Tomberlin.

Coaches for the Gold team include Tipton’s Travis White, Shane Weathers of Coyle, Gus Overstreet of Pioneer, Josh Been of Dewar and Cave Springs’ coach Tom Osburn.

The other participants from District B-4 of which Ryan and Waurika competed this past season are district champ Central High’s T.J. Birdwell and Hayden Cooper.

The Gold team is made up of all-stars from the even numbered districts in both Class B and C, while the Green team is comprised of players from the odd numbered districts in the two eight-man classifications.

This is the 16th year for the city of Miami to host the game. Prior to 2003, the game had been held in Alva since its inception in 1973. The first state champion for eight-man football was crowned in 1959.

Sponsors of the game include the City of Miami, the Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and the Oklahoma Eight-Man Football Coaches Association (OEMFCA).

The players and coaches from around the state arrived in Miami on Tuesday and participated in a full schedule of activities that will lead up to Saturday’s game.

Those activities include a night at the night at the Historic Coleman Theatre, a cook-out in Riverview Park and swimming at the state’s largest municipal pool as well as an evening with hypnotist Joe Comet. The players will team up with the Ottawa County Boys & Girls Club on Friday for an afternoon of bowling at PlayLand Lanes.

Tomorrow night (Friday), the players, coaches and cheerleaders will participate in the annual awards banquet. The OEMFCA and the local organizing committee will award some $11,000 in scholarships for 10 players. The OEMFCA awards an additional $1,000 in scholarships for two of the all-star cheerleaders.

Eagle Gridders Make Long Trip for Short Game

It is a long drive to Caddo. But the Waurika Eagles made quick work of the contest with the Bruins in coming away with a 48-0 victory last Friday night.

The Eagles move to 4-0 on the year and have not played past halftime in any of the games.

Waurika will move into district play Friday night as they travel to Wilson to face the Carter County Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The defense came up big for the Eagles last Friday night at Caddo. Waurika took advantage of four Caddo turnovers – turning two of them into instant scores – and also blocked a punt that set up another score for Waurika.

That effort coupled with Waurika scoring three touchdowns in less than two minutes of clock time propelled the Eagles to the big victory and aided in taking command of the game midway through the first quarter.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard with 8:18 left in the first quarter that set off the flurry of scores.

Colton Bryant carried the pigskin in from 15 yards out and also ran for the two-point conversion to give Waurika an 8-0 edge.

Caddo was mounting a drive to answer the score, but fumbled the ball at the Eagle 45 and Edwin Garcia alertly scooped it up and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. Kevin Garcia ran for the two points and Waurika held a 16-0 lead with 7:04 to play in the half.

The next Caddo possession also ended in a turnover and the Eagles took advantage.

Austin Dyer hauled in a 22-yard pass form Turner Mora and Mora ran for the two points and what had been a 0-0 deadlock just moments earlier was now a 24-0 Waurika advantage.

The Eagles got another break late in the first quarter as the Bruins were pinned deep in their own territory and fumbled the ball.

E. Garcia once again was in the right spot and picked up the loose ball and carried it 10 yards for a touchdown. Mora ran for the two-points and with 52 seconds to play in the first quarter, Waurika led, 32-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Bryant got his second score of the night on an eight-yard run. Zachary Brown ran for the two points and Waurika was in front, 40-0, with 7:21 to play before intermission.

Waurika closed out the scoring with Mora’s 23-yard scoring scamper and Matt Arriola tacked on the two-point conversion to put Waurika in front, 48-0, with 2:18 left until halftime.

Caddo could not answer and the game ended at the half on the 45-point mercy rule.

For the second time this season Mora led the Eagles in rushing with 73 yards on just six carries. Bryant tacked on 66 yards on nine carries and two scores.

EAGLE FLIGHTS: Waurika now leads the short series with Caddo, 3-2…..The 48 points score by Waurika is the most ever against Caddo and the 48-point margin of victory is also the most ever in the series…Waurika broke a two-game losing streak to the Bruins with the win…Waurika got its first eight-man victory over Caddo after two losses….The Eagles and Bruins played a two-game series in the late 80’s with Waurika winning both games handily…All three of Waurika’s wins over Caddo have been shutouts….Waurika has not started a season 4-0 since the 1989 season when the Eagles won their first nine games and carved out a 12-2 mark for the season…Despite the 4-0 start, the Eagles are not getting much respect around the state as they are unranked in every notable poll.

Cowgirl Harriers On A Roll Heading Into Regional Meet

The fourth-ranked Ryan Cowgirl cross country team has accomplished something no team has ever done at Ryan – win three consecutive meets.

That feat was accomplished last Saturday when the Cowgirls claimed the team title at the Healdton Invitational on a cold fall morning near Healdton Lake.

And, the performances could not come at a better time as the Cowgirls prepare for the Class 2A Regional Cross Country meet on Saturday hosted by Waurika in Harmon Park.

The Cowgirls recorded 25 team points – the fewest in school history – and outdistanced second-place Waurika who finished with 41 points. The previous best score by a team was 26 set earlier this year at Frederick and last year at the Cameron meet.

Lilybet Harmon continued her outstanding senior season with another first-place finish in the individual race. It was also her third straight individual title.

Harmon covered the 2.1-mile course in a time of 13:23.88. She also won the meet titles at Sulphur and Frederick.

Katelyn Dabbs, perhaps the most improved runner for the Cowgirls this season, nabbed second place with a time of 13:39.44, which was 14 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

Lily York captured sixth place with a time of 14:11.89 and Juliet Spangler finished eighth with a time of 14:15.94. Alicen Williams finished out the top ten performances by finishing 10th time a mark of 14:25.09.

Whittany Spangler also medaled for the Cowgirls by finishing in the 22nd spot, which is just one spot below her season-best set at Frederick. Her time was not available.

Grace Stamper finished 29th in the race – her best finish of the season.

The junior girls squad finished third in the team race behind Velma-Alma and Waurika.

The high school boys did not compete at Healdton

The high school girls and boys will be in action Saturday at the Class 2A Regional Cross Country Meet at Waurika on Saturday. The girls will run at 12 noon, while the boys will compete at 12:45 p.m.

The Cowgirls have an excellent chance to win the meet which would be the first regional title in school history and only the third time for a team to advance to the state meet. The top seven teams will qualify for the state competition.

Cowgirl Harriers Finish in Fifth Place Tie at State Meet

The Ryan Cowgirl cross country team finished the most successful season in school history last Saturday at Shawnee’s Gordon Cooper Technology Center – the site of the Class 2A State Cross Country Meet.

The Cowgirls finished in a tied for fifth place with Cherokee. Both teams had 192 points. Team places are settled by the finish of the sixth runner on each team and Cherokee earned the tie-breaker.

Boise City-Keyes won the Class 2A girls’ title with 78 points, but Hooker was right behind with 80 points and Watonga was third with 90 points.

It was a much more conducive day for a cross-country race than last week’s regional meets around the state. The Class 2A girls’ division featured the 21 teams that qualified in the regionals last week and 157 total runners.

Lilybet Harmon placed the Cowgirl team members with a 42nd-place finish. Her time was 13:39.3 over the 3,200-meter course. Harmon’s time was just short of her best time of the season set at the Cameron University meet a couple of weeks ago.

Holland Carter, the only senior on Coach Steve Spangler’s squad, was 47th for the Cowgirls and finished with a time of 13:50.1, which was an individual best for the 2018 season.

Finishing 53rd for the Cowgirls was Juliet Spangler with a time of 13:55.4. Spangler was appearing in her third state meet after qualifying as an individual her freshman year.

Freshman Katlyn Dabbs was 54th for the Cowgirls with a time of 13:56.9 and that was just two seconds above her best finish of the season which came at the Cameron meet.

Lily York was next for the Cowgirls and finished just behind Dabbs in 56th place with a time of 13:58.2. York’s time was also a personal best for the 2018 season.

Rounding out the team finishers for the Cowgirls was Alicyn Williams, who was 111th and recorded a time of 15:32.6. The Cowgirl freshman bested her top time of the season by over 10 seconds in the state meet.

The competition at state marked the end of incredible achievements by the Cowgirl cross country squad in only their third season of competing as a team.

The Cowgirls won meets at Waurika, Walters, Frederick, Healdton and Cameron University. The team successfully defended the titles won in 2017 at Waurika and Healdton.

The Cowgirl harriers also finished second at Sulphur and third at the Class 2A regional and were ranked among the top 10 girls’ cross country teams in Class 2A all season.

Lady Eagles Drop Two Contests Heading Into District Play

Hoping to redeem what has been a disappointing season for the Waurika fast-pitch softball team, the Lady Eagles were to have begun play today in the Class A District Tournament at Ringling.

The first round game with Wilson was to have been played at noon today (Thursday). The loser was slated to face Ringling at 1:30 p.m. and the winner plays Ringling today at 3 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament will continue tonight and if only two teams remain, the championship game would be tonight if one of the teams has no losses.

An if necessary game is scheduled for Friday.

Last week the Lady Eagles dropped contests to Geronimo, 4-1, on Monday and to Velma-Alma, 12-5, last Thursday

The Lady Eagles scored in the top of the first against Geronimo as Gracie Walling singled. Hope Cummings also singled and Walling scored by stealing home to give Waurika a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Blue Jays picked up two runs in the bottom of the first as the first two runners reached on errors and eventually came around to score to give Geronimo a 2-1 advantage.

The game stayed at 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Three hits and two walks helped the Lady Blue Jays add two more runs to take a 4-1 advantage into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Lady Eagles went down in order.

Five different players for Waurika had hits – Liberti Simmons, Faith Roberson, Walling, Cummings and Landry Forsyth.

Against Velma-Alma the Lady Eagles battled on nearly even terms with the Lady Comets until late in the game.

The Lady Comets got on the board first with a four-run uprising in the bottom of the first with the benefit of only two base hits.

The Lady Eagles answered in the top of the second with a pair of runs. Cummings singled and Forsyth singled and Cummings scored on a bases loaded walk by Grace Hill. Forsyth scored on an error and the Lady Eagles had trimmed the lead to 4-2.

V-A came back with a single run in the bottom of the second to increase the lead to 5-2.

Waurika narrowed the lead in the top of the third with a run after Walling reached on an error Forsyth got an RBI-single to put the deficit at 5-3.

The Lady Comets added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a run to put the score at 6-3.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Eagles scored twice. Walling led off with a walk, Cummings singled and Forsyth singles to load the bases. Riley Howell was hit by a pitch to score Walling and Kinzie Taylor got an RBI-single to cut the Lady Comet lead to 6-5.

In the bottom of the fifth the Lady Comets scored three times taking advantage of two Lady Eagle errors, a walk and two doubles to extend the lead to 9-5.

Waurika could not cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth and V-A added three more runs in the bottom of the inning with a three singles and two Waurika errors.

The Lady Eagles could not score in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Forsyth was outstanding at the plate for the Lady Eagles going 3-for-4 with one run batted in. Cummings had two hits and scored two runs. Walling also scored a pair of runs for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles had seven hits total, but nine Waurika errors hampered the squad’s ability to stay with the Lady Comets, who had 10 hits and had only two errors in the game.

Ryan, Waurika Cagers Set To Enter Post-Season Play

The slate is clean.

While regular season records mean something for district tournament pairings and seeding, every basketball squad in Oklahoma starts the post-season with a 0-0 mark.

That is good news for the roundball squads at Waurika and Ryan as all four teams enter the playoffs with losing records.

Play begins tomorrow night (Friday) in the Class A District Tournament for both Waurika and Ryan.

Both Waurika teams will travel to Ft. Cobb-Broxton to face Ringling, while both Ryan teams will journey to Central High to face Bray-Doyle.

The girls’ tilts will open the tournament at 6:30 p.m. at both sites.

Awaiting the winner of the Waurika-Ringling games will be Ft. Cobb, while Central High will take on the winner of the Ryan and Bray-Doyle matchups.

The championship games will be played Saturday with the girls’ games tipping at 6:30 p.m.

Waurika and Ringling drew a tough assignment for the district tourney.

The only regular season meeting between the two Jefferson County schools was canceled because of the flu.

However, the boys’ team that survives that contest will have to face a legitimate state title contender.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton is 22-3 on the year and the only three losses have been to ranked teams in Class B, Class 2A and Class 5A. The Mustangs have won nine straight contests.

The Mustangs, ranked second in Class A, won the Caddo County Tournament and garnered runner up honors in tournaments at Chattanooga and Anadarko.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton will be well-rested as the Mustangs last played last Saturday against Walters giving them a week to prepare for the winner of Waurika and Ringling.

The Blue Devil boys come into the tournament with an 8-10 mark. They have been inconsistent much of the season, but should be competitive against the Eagles.

Coach Joe Masoner’s Waurika boys have also struggled to find wins in 2018. The Eagles were 4-13 heading into last Tuesday’s game with Grandfield.

Waurika has had three games canceled because of the flu and have only played once since January 23 before last Tuesday.

The Eagles have had turnover troubles most of the season averaging almost 20 miscues a game.

Cache Arellano has been the ringleader for the Eagles averaging over nine points a game and pulling down an average of eight rebounds a game.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton handed Waurika an 81-28 loss in the first round of the Chattanooga Tournament.

The girls’ bracket of the district tourney at Ft. Cobb will be much the same as the boys’ bracket.

The Lady Mustangs will be the overwhelming favorite as they come in ranked 15th in Class A and won the Chattanooga Tournament and were the runner up at the tough Caddo County fray.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton is 15-10 on the year, but only 5-5 in its last 10 games.

Ringling’s girls will come into the tournament with a 9-6 record and have one tournament title to their credit – the St. Jo, Texas Invitational.

The Waurika girls have struggled all year under first-year coach Kalee Baxter and hold a 5-11 record not including Tuesday’s result with Grandfield.

The Lady Eagles have been led most of the season by Madison Roberson. Roberson has averaged 15 points a game and averages about 15 boards a game.

In the district tournament at Central High, none of the boys’ squads will enter the tournament with a winning record – and it isn’t close.

Ryan, with a mark of 5-16, was granted the top seed, but Bray-Doyle chose to match up with the Cowboys in the first round of the tournament.

Central High’s boys started the season 0-10, but earned the consolation title at the Black Diamond Tournament at Rush Springs at the beginning of 2018. The Bronchos are 4-16 on the year.

Bray-Doyle has had a tough year as well as the Cowboys and Bronchos.

The Donkeys will bring a 3-14 record into the tournament.

The Cowboys own a win over the Donkeys just before Christmas, but Bray-Doyle has been playing a bit better as of late.

Coach Judd Matthes’ squad has struggled to score during most of the season.

While a number of Cowboys can contribute points on a given night, Ryan lacks the go-to player that is a consistent scorer.

Skyler Parkhill has been the top point-getter for the Cowboys overall.

Central High drew the top seed in the girls’ bracket and came into the tournament with a 15-8 mark that does not include last Tuesday’s game with Sterling.

The Lady Bronchos won the Minco Invitational and were runner up at the Black Diamond Tournament.

Bray-Doyle’s girls own a two-point win over Ryan in a regular season meeting before Christmas and have a 12-8 mark not including last Tuesday’s contest with Oklahoma School for the Deaf.

The Lady Donkeys won the Maysville Shootout in December, but are only 4-7 since January 1 – not including the game with OSD.

The Cowgirls, under first-year coach Steve Spangler, have compiled a 7-14 record for the season.

It has been a struggle on the offensive end for the Cowgirls most of the season, but Lily York has been the top point-getter for the season especially in the recent part of the schedule.

The Cowgirls will start four sophomores and only one senior. The roster has been limited most of the season due to lack of participation and injuries.

Both the district champion and the district runner up will advance to next week’s regional tournament.

Waurika Junior High Thinclads Compete at Wynnewood

On Tuesday the Waurika seventh grade and junior high track squads traveled to Wynnewood to compete in a track meet.

No team scores were kept in the meet that featured four divisions.

Leading the way for the junior high girls’ team was Libi Simmons who captured gold medals in the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump.

Kynlee Waters placed in two events for the Lady Eagles. She was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles. Corley Coffin captured fifth place in the 300 hurdle events.

Aubree Showalter also placed in two individual races. She was fourth in both the 800 meters and the 1,600 meters.

Bailey Romero earned third place in the long jump for the lady Eagles.

In the weight events, Mackinze Taylor was fourth and Alana Lewis was fifth in the discus and Cassidie Berry finished sixth in the shot put.

The 1,600 meter relay team of Waters, Simmons, Trish Julian and Showalter earned fourth place.

In the 400 meter relay the squad of Simmons, Tracy Ballard, Coffin and Romero came in fifth place.

The 800 meter relay team of Coffin, Ballard, Faith Hill and Romero turned in a sixth place finish for the Lady Eagles.

Trent Arellano was the top performer for the junior high boys. He won the gold medal in the long jump.

Matt Arriola placed in two events. He was second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump.

Treyton Torrez also placed in the high jump earning a silver medal.

Waurika High School Athletes Feted At Recent All-Sports Banquet

A number of recognitions were handed out to Waurika High School athletes at the recent All-Sports Banquet held at the school a week ago Tuesday.

All athletes were given their letters for participation in fast-pitch softball, baseball, powerlifting, football, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball, boys track, girls track and cross country.

It was an eventful year as many of the teams had great accomplishments, but on this night it was all about individual honors that were well-deserved.

The Waurika Athletic Booster Club presented scholarships to two senior athletes – Aaron Nitka and Madison Roberson.

Each of the coaches took time to recognize the athletes for honors or performances they achieved in the 2018-19 school year.

…Outstanding Season Ends As Bid To Advance to Area Tourney Comes Up Short

GERONIMO – The Waurika Lady Eagles ran into a matchup problem in the Class A Regional Tournament consolation finals here last Saturday afternoon.

For one of the rare times this season, the opponent – this time Calumet – provided a presence inside that thwarted Waurika’s efforts to work the ball inside the paint.

And, the Lady Chieftains built an early lead on some hot shooting from the field and Waurika never led in the game before falling, 50-36, at the Geronimo Dome.

The Lady Eagles finished the 2022 campaign with a 20-7 record.

The Lady Eagles fell into the consolation bracket on Thursday with a 39-27 loss to Cyril, but advanced into the consolation bracket finals with a 44-40 victory over Binger-Oney on Friday.

Calumet opened Saturday’s game with a 7-0 run and Waurika never pulled closer than three points the rest of the game.

The Lady Chieftains took a 10-3 lead on two treys and two two-point buckets at the 2:41 mark of the first quarter.

But, the Lady Eagles fought back and scored the final four points of the quarter as Simmons hit a pair of buckets – the last one with 25 seconds left in the first quarter to narrow the Calumet lead to, 10-7.

The Lady Chieftains opened the second quarter on a 9-3 run to increase the lead to 19-10.

Cassidie Berry hit a pair of free throws with 4:03 left in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 19-12, but Calumet answered with a three-pointer from the top of the key by Allie Harris that increased the lead to 22-12 with 3:50 left in the half.

Harris hit another three with 3:05 left in the second frame that gave the Lady Chieftains a 25-12 advantage.

Gracie Walling connected on a short jumper with 2:26 left in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 25-14, but neither team scored the rest of the half.

A 5-0 run to open the third quarter increased the lead to 29-14 with 3:23 left in the third quarter.

Aubree Showalter connected on a three-pointer with 2:49 to play to cut the margin to 29-17.

When Liberti Simmons hit a layup at the buzzer to end the third quarter the Lady Eagles trailed, 32-21.

Calumet increased the lead to 34-21 with a layup, but the Lady Eagles answered with Walling’s three-pointer from the corner that cut the margin to 34-24 with 6:50 left in the game.

The Lady Eagles would get no closer.

Calumet went on a 11-1 run that was capped by a pair of layups by Karysa Meade to put the Lady Chieftains in front, 45-25, with 3:07 left that put the game out of reach.

Waurika finished the contest with an 11-5 scoring run, but it was simply not enough on this afternoon.

Simmons led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 14 points, but no other Lady Eagle was able to get to double figures.

The Lady Eagles advanced to the consolation finals with a tense victory over the Lady Bobcats here Friday.

In the opening moments of the game it looked like Waurika’s season was in jeopardy as Binger-Oney opened the game with two three-pointers – the second one coming at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter that gave the Lady Bobcats a 6-0 lead.

Jasmine Henry’s layup with 3:20 left in the first quarter gave Waurika its first points, but after the Lady Bobcats hit another trey, Waurika trailed, 9-2, with 2:32 showing in the initial frame.

The Lady Eagles finished the quarter on a 6-0 run – all on buckets by Simmons.

Simmons had a short runner, an offensive rebound and put back and a short jumper – the last coming with 4.1 seconds left to pull Waurika to within one point, 9-8, at the end of the first quarter.

Waurika opened the second quarter much like they had finished the first period as the Lady Eagles went on an 8-0 run that was started by a layup by Berry giving Waurika its first lead, 10-9, with 7:33 left in the half.

The run was capped by Tallin Mora’s short jumper that gave Waurika a 16-9 lead with 3:07 to play in the second quarter.

The Lady Bobcats went on a modest 6-2 scoring run to close out the half and Waurika’s lead was 18-15 at the break.

In the early part of the third quarter the game was extremely tight as Waurika never led by more than four points.

At the 4:31 mark, the Lady Bobcats got a layup that tied the game at 25-25.

That would be the final time Binger-Oney would score in the third quarter.

Waurika finished the quarter on a 10-0 blitz. Henry connected on a layup with 4:18 to play and that was followed by Berry’s layup at the 3:35 mark.

With 1:07 left in the quarter, Berry got another layup and the scoring blitz was capped on a layup and an eight-foot running jumper by Simmons that put Waurika in front, 35-25, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bobcats opened the fourth quarter with a trey that cut the lead to 35-28 and Binger-Oney continued to draw closer to the Lady Eagles.

With 1:29 left in the game, Binger-Oney capped a 5-0 run with a layup that tied the game at 38-38.

The Lady Eagles answered with a bucket by Berry on a nifty assist from Mora that put Waurika on top, 40-38 with 1:08 left in the game.

Waurika got a steal, but turned the ball back over to Binger-Oney with 55 seconds to play.

The Lady Bobcats got a free throw with 48.5 seconds left to draw within one, 40-39.

Berry connected on another in-the-paint layup with 36.3 seconds left that increased the Lady Eagle lead to 42-39.

Binger-Oney converted on one of two charity tosses with 15.9 seconds to play to crawl to within two at 42-40.

Waurika grabbed the rebound on the second free throw and then the Lady Bobcats were forced to foul four times to get Waurika to the free throw line.

The final foul came with 7.7 seconds left and Simmons calmly sank two free throws that set the final margin.

Simmons led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 17 points, while Berry contributed 13 tallies.

In the regional semifinals in the Geronimo Dome on Thursday night, Waurika applied tons of defensive pressure to stay with the talented Lady Pirates through three quarters.

The defensive pressure by the Lady Pirates equaled that of the Lady Eagles to the point that Waurika managed only a single point in the final quarter of what had been a close game throughout.

Waurika was able to gain an 8-5 edge in the first quarter and increased the lead to 17-13 at the intermission.

Cyril, the 10th-ranked squad in Class A, began to take over in the second half.

In the third quarter the Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Eagles, 14-9, to move in front, 27-26, heading into the final period.

It was a 12-1 scoring advantage in the final frame that catapulted the Lady Pirates into last Saturday’s championship tilt.

Mora led the Lady Eagles in scoring with eight points.

Cyril went on to claim the regional title last Saturday night with a 45-41 victory over Oklahoma Christian Academy.

LADY EAGLES REGIONAL AND SEASON-ENDING NOTES: This was the 16th time a Waurika girls basketball team played in a regional tourney championship game….Eight of those have been in the consolation bracket….Waurika is now 5-11 in all regional tourney championship games – both winner and loser bracket finals….This was the 28th appearance for a Waurika girls team in a regional tournament with the first appearance coming in 1964….Waurika is now 24-35 in all regional tourney games after going 1-2 in this year’s regional tourney….In regional tournament play, Waurika is 0-2 against Cyril, 1-1 against Binger-Oney and 0-1 against Calumet….The 27 points scored against Cyril on Thursday is the second fewest points scored by Waurika in a regional tourney game….The Lady Eagles also had 27 points in a loss to Velma-Alma in a 1997 regional game….The fewest points scored by the Lady Eagles in a regional tourney game is 23 against Frederick in 1964 – the first appearance for Waurika in a regional tourney….The 20 wins for the Lady Eagles is the most since the 2017 season….Waurika has had only four seasons with 20 or more wins….Waurika girls’ coach Kalee Baxter is now 74-35 in five seasons at the helm of the Lady Eagles….This was the fourth straight winning season posted by the Lady Eagles and the eighth in the past nine seasons.

Shattuck Defends Home Turf With Win Over Waurika

The task of facing the top-ranked team in Class B proved to be a bit too challenging for the Waurika Eagles at Shattuck last Friday.

The Indians used a big second quarter to garner a 56-14 victory over the Eagles.

Waurika, 1-2, will return home tomorrow night (Friday) for a homecoming battle with Canton. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cy Sloan Stadium.

Homecoming activities will be held before the game.

Canton will bring a 3-1 record to Waurika and the Tigers suffered their initial loss of the season last Friday in a 44-28 loss to Ringwood.

Shattuck’s quarterback, Samuel Long, was a thorn in the side of the Waurika defense all night.

The senior quarterback ran for three touchdowns and threw for another score and converted four two-point conversions for the Indians. Long finished with 167 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Waurika hung tough with the defending Class B state champions as the Indians held only an 8-0 lead after the first quarter on Long’s four-yard run and two-point conversion with just 59 seconds left in the first quarter.

But the Indians dominated the second quart with three scores and three two-point conversions to hold a commanding 32-0 advantage at the intermission.

Shattuck added to the lead in the third quarter with another scoring run from Long – this time a 30-yard scamper – and Caden Laverty ran for the two points to increase the lead to 40-0 with 7:53 left in the game.

Waurika answered with its first score of the night as Treyton Torrez scored from one yard out. The two-point conversion failed and with 4:12 left in the third quarter the Eagles still trailed, 40-6.

Shattuck scored on the first play of the fourth quarter and was successful on the two-point conversion to increase the margin to 48-6 with 11:56 to play in the game.

Waurika kept the game alive with a score. Torrez scored from six yards out and also ran for the two-point conversion but the Eagles still trailed, 48-14, with only 8:44 left in the game.

Shattuck tacked on another score with only 2:26 left in the game.

The game ended with Waurika in Shattuck territory.

The Eagles did have 263 yards rushing on the night, but the Indians rushed for 355 yards and had 75 yards passing in the victory.

Kevin Garcia rushed for over 100 yards with 118 paces on 14 carries.

EAGLE FLIGHTS: Shattuck and Waurika both have one win in the two-game series with Waurika’s victory coming in a 1988 playoff game….Shattuck’s win over Waurika increased its winning streak to 44 straight games….The last time Shattuck lost was in October of 2017….The last time the Eagles started a season at 1-2 was in 2014 when they won the season opener against Ryan and lost to Maud and Maysville in back-to-back weeks….This marks the first time under head coach Joe Allen the Eagles have lost two games during the regular season….Both of the Waurika losses have come to a pair of the top programs in Class B.
