OSU Extension Presents Early Spring Roundup Program . .

The annual Early Spring Roundup program, presented by the Carter, Jefferson, Love, and Marshall County OSU Extension offices, and hosted by the Red River Livestock Auction, is just around the corner. For those who are unfamiliar, the program consists of three sessions, held on successive Monday evenings, with nightly door prizes and a Grand Prize drawing for a Lincoln 225 Welder/Generator. To be eligible for the Grand Prize drawing, you must attend all three sessions.

The program agenda is as follows:

What is Disc Golf? It is coming to Waurika

It will be a part of Harmon Park and the land behind the Waurika football field stadium (see photo at left).

Disc golf!

The game is growing in popularity and is coming to Waurika very soon, possibly by May.

Monica Bartling presented the idea at Monday evening’s Waurika City Council Meeting. The council approved the addition of the Disc Golf Course so work should begin soon.

Monica explained a bit about Disc Golf.

The game is much like the traditional golf. However, instead of using a ball and clubs, the participants use a flying disc that closely resembles a Frisbee.

Historically, the game was formalized in the 1970s.

The object of the game is much the same as it is in traditional golf. Attempting to complete each hole (goal) with the fewest attempts as possible.

Both sports began at a location called a “Tee”.

The target is a basket (see picture above).

After beginning at the “tee” the player will continue to toss the flying disc down a fairway until he successfully lands one of them in the basket.

Here are some of the advantages to disc golf.

No golf cart rentals or fees to play.

Fun and challenging for all ages.

Great exercise.

According to the notes Monica Bartling presented at Monday evening’s meeting, the Waurika Disc Golf Course was designed by Anderson Dark, Esq.

He is an in-house counsel for Allstate Insurance in Oklahoma City, and – most importantly- an avid disc golfer since high school. His thoroughness is in designing this course is admirable and exactly what we need to ensure the best golf experience.

He has visited the course with multiple people throwing from different places on the course at the same time. His design ability allows for 18 holes of challenging golf and adheres to the standards of the Professional Disc golf Association (PDGA). this allows us to qualify for multiple tournament opportunities. He is donating his valuable time to design this course for Waurika.

The new disc golf course could potentially bring many visitors to Waurika and thus, much revenue.

The total estimated cost for completion of the project is $8,700.00 and will be paid for through fundraising efforts.

Waurika Hosts Honor Band Tryouts

Last Wednesday, November 14th Waurika High School hosted the tryouts for SCOBDA Honor Band for schools Class B through 3A.  In Honor Band, students audition using a specific piece of music, and the top students are selected to make up a band.   This band, made up of students from all over south-central Oklahoma, then meets for a 2-day music clinic with a guest director, and perform a concert at the end of the clinic.

This is the third year for WHS to host the SCOBDA Honor Band auditions.  When speaking with Band Director Everett Hodges, he stated he thought this year went great.  “We had 9 students qualify, 4 of which in High School, 3 junior high qualifiers, and 2 seventh grade band members. There were roughly 500 kids in attendance during the auditions, from about 20 different schools,” Hodges mentioned.   He also noted how appreciative he was to WHS and its faculty for making the auditions run smoothly each year. 

Students qualifying from Waurika were:  7th graders Alexia Henry (flute) and Trish Julian (trumpet), 8th grader Hannah Lamons (trumpet); freshmen Kaytlyn Williams (flute) and Mallory Adkins (flute); sophomores Hope Cummings, Regena Bradley, Brooklyn Barnes (all clarinet), and senior Emily Waid (baritone).  

The SCOBDA, or South-Central Oklahoma Band Director’s Association, Honor Band clinic will take place January 11-12 in Marietta, with both jr high and high school concerts taking place on Saturday the 12th.

Samantha Horner is one of Waurika’s Valedictorians

 Samantha Horner is one of the Valedictorians of this year’s senior class of Waurika.

Besides being a cheerleader, she has also enjoyed showing pigs and playing basketball. 

Her love of working with pigs began when she was in the 7th grade and inspired her to found Sam’s Show Pigs, a business that breeds, raises and sells show pigs. 

Horner has a huge love for all animals and plans to be a veterinarian when she graduates from Oklahoma State University. 

She is currently working at Chisholm Trail Animal Hospital on Fuller Road near Duncan and has even earned her certification of veterinary assistant. 

Horner says she has known since  her sophomore year in high school that she wanted to be a veterinarian. 

When she starts college in the fall she will  be classified as a second semester freshman because she has already earned 12 hours of college credit. 

Her most memorable moments from high school are from her experiences showing pigs. 

Purple is her favorite color and her favorite genre of music is country. 

She has been involved in Oklahoma Honor Society, FFA, 4H, Student council, National Honor Society, scholastic meets, Cross-Country, basketball, golf, cheer leading, and track. 

Horner has also served as President of Beta Club and her senior class, treasurer for National Honor Society, student council representative and captain of Waurika Cheer. 

At times she has volunteered at the Waurika Public Library and has served as a mentor to incoming 6th graders. 

She served as a mentor at middle school cheer tryouts, leader for little eagle basketball camp, and was a spokesperson for the local effort to support the hurricane Harvey relief project. 

Horner has earned many awards and honors. She has received FFA awards and 4H awards such as Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Swine Showmanship. 

She was the recipient of the Hollis Dickey Award and the HOBY Leadership Conference Ambassador honor. 

She has also received academic awards in physical science, biology, US History, Oklahoma history, anatomy, and the OSU Academic Excellence Scholarship. 

Honer was Homecoming Queen. 

Samantha Horner has a great future in front of her and will continue to excel at college and in her chosen profession. 

Businesses Closing During Snake Hunt

Due to the Snake Hunt the Following Businesses will be closed next week on April the 12th and the 13th.

Farm Bureau will be closed Thursday and Friday but will be available to take calls at, 580-512-9545.

Farmers Insurance will be Closing after lunch on Thursday and will be closed on Friday.

Dr. Steven Hinshaw will be closed Friday.

The Jefferson County Courthouse will be closed Friday.

Small Town Creations will be closed Thursday and Friday.

The Red River Fine Art Gallery will be closed Thursday and Friday.

First Bank & Trust will be closing at 12:00 on Friday.

Med Tech will be closing after lunch on Thursday and will remained closed on Friday.

Guaranty Abstract will be closed on Friday.

Round Ryan October 17 2019

This has been a productive season for Ryan cross country.  The young runners in Jr. High School show improvement constantly and the High School boys seem to shave time off with each passing meet, but the High School girls have taken cross country to a new level here in Ryan.  This last week the Cowgirls have won their third team title in a row, Lilybet Harmon won her third individual title in a row and the Cowgirls have had five of the top ten finishers for the third time in a row.  Next weekend the cross country team will be competing at regionals.  At 12:30 this Saturday, we will all have the opportunity to watch this team in action at Waurika.  Basketball season will be starting soon.  To be honest, I have never really followed the sport.  I’m short, slow and uncoordinated, so it is easy to figure out why it’s not my sport.  In an effort to be fair I may give it a try this season, if nothing else it will give me a chance to see the new/old gym.  The football game this week will be against long time rivals Waurika Eagles.  This rivalry spans many decades and having witnessed it from both sides, I am glad to see that the modern version is much more genteel than it was in the old days.  Come out to the game and see some good football.  Game time is at 7:30 friday night at the Bob Givens Sports Complex.  If you play your cards right you might be able to get some supper as well.

 This next Sunday, October 20th from 11:00-2:00 there will be an Indian Taco dinner to raise funds for some of the community projects that are happening around Ryan.  It will be at the Sr. Citizens Center and the cost will be donations only.  I understand that they still need desserts if you would like to donate some sweets.  Take outs are available and Heather Casebolt guarantees that the food will be delicious.

 If you have been paying attention, you will have noticed that dirt work is going on out on the highway across from the football field.  They are coming along with the future home of the next dollar store for this area.

 Fall weather is finally upon us and it is wonderful.  Not to appear ungrateful but we could have done without that freeze the other night.  Ah well we have to take the bad with the good.  I am starting to see mums and pumpkins around town, decorating street corners and porches.  With the fall colors a, pumpkin flavored everything and the cool air, it seems that the main part of football season is here.  GO IRISH!!!

 Christmas On the Trail is coming up and we will be having another meeting on the 25th of this month.  If you are interested, you can attend or you can call or come see us with your ideas.  We are still looking for vendors and volunteers.  We are adding games and activities every week.

 I am sitting here listening to Adele sing about setting fire to the rain.  I’m not sure the lyrics make a lot of sense but she sure can sing.  Until next week.

Introducing the Native West Trading Company

The Native West Trading Company, downtown Waurika, is one of the latest additions to the brick and mortar locations in the community but has had an online presence for around two years. Owners, Robert and Lauren Forst are excited about the new venture. 

Lauren, the master craftsman, has been working with leather for many years, dating back to her time in Arizona. She apprenticed with friends who had a leather business. Since then it has been a passion of hers and the results speak for themselves. 

Customers can find a variety of beautiful leather goods including purses, wallets, key chains, and more. The store also offers wild rags, crochet animals, t-shirts, blankets, handmade jewelry, baby clothes and much more. Most of the items in the store are made by herself and other local craftsmen and artist. Clay Forst even has some pictures on canvas available.

The idea of a physical store in Waurika began when Lauren was looking for a place she could use as a workshop for her online store nativewesttradingco.com. Once she found the location downtown, it was just logical to go ahead and use it as both a workshop and a local store for her business. 

And business has really taken off. She says it’s been fun trying to keep up with the demand for both the website and the store downtown. She loves the challenge.

‘Round Ryan News

What wonderful weather we are experiencing around Ryan the past 2 days.  We’ve had temperatures just above 90 Monday and not expecting to hit 100 this week.  The past week was miserable with temperatures climbing up to 114 and lows around 80.  It’s a blessing to get outside in the morning and feel a cool breeze around you and then to go home in the evening on my bicycle and still hardly break a sweat before I get home, even after riding out to the cemetery before going home.  Summers can be hard to tolerate some of the time. 

This Saturday morning is the day of the Ryan food bank.

This Saturday evening, Billy Roberson and his band will be playing at the old Methodist Church in Byers.  The admission fee is $10.00 if folks might be interested in going out for a good night of country & western entertainment.  I am not certain as to what time the music starts, but I will find out before Saturday if folks want to call the drug store for further information on this event.  Bill is a great musician and singer if you’ve never had an opportunity to hear him sing or play. 

Sunday, at the Ryan Senior Citizen Center, there will be a benefit dinner for Pat Bussey, starting at 11:00am.  Pat is undergoing cancer treatment in Tulsa, and has to make numerous trips to undergo these treatments.  Please get out and give to this event that can help Pat and her family have less of a financial burden. 

Sunday afternoon, the wedding shower for Macie Jo Wright is from 2:00-4:00 at the Ryan Church of Christ.  We still have a hostess box for them if folks call before too late this Friday afternoon.

This next week, on Friday, August 3rd, Ryan will be having our sidewalk sales again.  I’ll be praying for cooler weather for this day.  Maybe before then, we will have had some nice rains, too.

Kim’s news for this week:

Sunday, Ruffy Tuffy got a day off, because it was just too hot.

But, the rest of the week, early morning riding we seek. 

Foxy likes early better, especially in this hot weather.

Terral City Wide Yard Sales- Our annual City Wide Garage sales is set for October 4 & 5, 2019. If you are interested in having a sale, please contact Shirley and have your name and address put on the list. The list is sponsored by Shirley’s Gifts for all Occasions and will be at local businesses on Friday. Hope we have a good showing. The FBC GA’s will be having a Bake Sale and Garage Sale as our first fundraiser on that day.

Terral School- On Sept. 17th the 5th, thru 8th grades will be leaving at 8:30 a.m. and return approximately at 5:00 p.m. Autumn begins on September 23rd. Upcoming event is our Fall Carnival set for October 5, 2019. Be sure to mark your calendar. Watch out for those kids walking to school. Slow down in the School Zones. Terral First Baptist Church Kids for Christ- Our year will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 at 5:30p.m. Kindergarten, RA’s, GA’s, and Youth will all begin on this day. If you are interested in any of these classes you may contact Shirley at 580-437-2337. I am in hopes this will be a great year to praise the Lord. Hope to see ya there!

Terral First Baptist GA’s- We have started our “Armor of God” study series last week and learn how to put on the “Breastplate of Righteousness”. We are doing our first craft project of cat and dog pillows. Learning the lessons God has for us and sharing in making a project. We will have our first fundraiser on October 5th, with a Garage sale and Bake Sale on the corner of Apache and Main. GOD IS GOOD
