Last week was Nursing Home Week. We all had a great time dressing up and having fun. Monday was crazy hat and sock day. We played Penny Pitch, our big winner was Minia. Tuesday was Western Day, we had a Cow Chip Throw and Opal was our big Winner. She said being a farm girl paid off. Wednesday was Carnival/Sport Day. We wore our favorite team and enjoyed cotton candy. It was delicious. Thursday was Hawaiian Day. We dressed with grass skirts, coconuts, leis, and enjoyed fruit trays with dip in pineapples. Our black out bingo winner was Loretta. On Friday was Patriotic Day, we enjoyed walking tacos and that afternoon enjoyed a party with root beer floats and door prizes. We really appreciate our local businesses for donating door prizes. Businesses who donated were Doc’s Place, Shelton’s Grocery, Bills Fish House, Action Fitness, Sonic, Beaver Lumber, Quikmart, Garrett Flower Shop, Markette, Eck Drug, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Small Town Creations. Thanks again to everyone who helped make our week special.

Less than a week remains for registered voters in Jefferson County to apply for absentee ballots to be mailed to them for the November 6 General Election, County Election Board Secretary Tammy Richardson said today.
Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, to be processed in time for the election.
Absentee voters may apply in person at the County Election Board office or may send their applications by mail, fax, or e-mail. An online version of the form may be filled out and submitted electronically at www.elections.ok.gov.Any registered voter eligible to vote in the election may vote by absentee ballot without stating a reason, Richardson said, however, absentee voters can activate certain special conditions in the following circumstances:
• Registered voters who are physically incapacitated and voters who care for physically incapacitated persons who cannot be left unattended may apply for absentee ballots only by mail, fax, e-mail, online or via an agent who is at least 16 years of age and who is not employed by or related within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity to any person whose name appears on the ballot.
• Registered voters who are confined to nursing homes in the county may apply by mail, by fax, by e-mail, online or via an agent who is at least 16 years of age and who is not employed by or related within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity to any person whose name appears on the ballot.

Terral First Baptist GA’s- We have started our “Armor of God” study series last week and learn how to put on the “Breastplate of Righteousness”. The Waurika Public Library’s annual Scholastic Book Fair starts Saturday, May 4th to coincide with Downtown Again! At the Book Fair, you will find hundreds of books from new and favorite authors, popular series, cool posters, school supplies, and fun for everyone! The Scholastic Book Fair brings to Waurika a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose books will motivate them to read more!
Summer is right around the corner! The Waurika Public Library invites elementary-aged children, those who will be entering 1st grade through 5th grade in September, to attend this year’s Summer Reading Program. A variety of weekday programming will be offered and lunch will be provided daily for any school-aged child.
The theme this year is A Universe of Stories! Programming will run each weekday, June 3-July 26 with the exception of the July 4 holiday. Reading and activities will be from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. Children attending the Summer Reading Program must be picked up by their parent/guardian at noon each day.

OKLAHOMA CITY (June 12, 2018) – A public awareness campaign to help ensure nutrition for summertime learning is celebrating its second year. Launched in 2017 by the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) and its Office of Child Nutrition, the #Food4ThoughtOK campaign is designed to increase the number of free meals served to Oklahoma kids age 18 and under during the federally funded Summer Food Service Program.
Last year, #Food4ThoughtOK led to an increase in participation of nearly 9 percent over the previous year, with more than 125,000 additional meals served. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister expects participation to grow again this year.
“During the summer break, it’s vital that our children continue to receive nutrition supports that will strengthen their ability to learn. Lack of nourishment impacts cognitive functioning. Healthy brain development doesn’t allow kids to take time off when school is not in session,” Hofmeister said. “The #Food4ThoughtOK campaign effectively leverages federal dollars and enables parents to encourage learning yearlong.”
The #Food4ThoughtOK campaign is the result of a partnership between OSDE and Hunger Free Oklahoma. It is made possible with assistance from Oklahoma City-based Tyler Media, Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, the Chickasaw Nation, Oklahoma Department of Human Services and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, along with many nonprofit and faith-based organizations. The Oklahoma Childhood Food Security Coalition has helped disseminate information statewide.
The campaign emerged from the collaboration between Hofmeister and her Faith-Based Advisory Council, one of several stakeholder groups with whom the superintendent meets regularly.
Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the nation. Food insecurity exists when a population has limited or uncertain access to safe, nutritional food or an inability to acquire it. An estimated 1 in 4 Oklahoma children – 220,000 in all – are considered food insecure, and research indicates that students who struggle with hunger have poorer academic and health outcomes than those who do not.
In Oklahoma, 61 percent of public school students are eligible for free and reduced-priced lunches. During the summer months when school is not in session, only about 6 percent of those same students participate in summer feeding programs, ranking Oklahoma 51st in the nation, according to a 2017 report from the Food Research & Action Center.
The summer meals program offers convenience to families; the vast majority of Oklahoma’s more than 600 sites are open, and children are not required to pre-register or present paperwork. Families interested in finding a serving site can text FOOD to 877877 or visit www.meals4kidsOK.org.
The latest production of the Duncan Little Theatre is a Pulitzer Prize winning play called You Can’t Take it With You written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.
Many are probably familiar with the film version staring Jimmy Stewart and Lionel Barrymore.
The play is a hilarious comedy that was first performed on Broadway in 1936.
Carter Waid and Justin Sullivan are appearing in the play.
Waid will appear in the November 23rd performance as Mr. Kirby, a serious business man.
Waid is intrigued with his part. His participation in this production is as a fill-in for Derrick Miller who is both a producer and an actor in this play. He also plays Mr. Kirby. However, he has to absent on the 23rd, thus the reason Waid is filling in.

“Don’t let life get the better of you and steal your relationship with your family,” is Waid’s impression of the plays overall theme.
Waid has been performing plays with the Duncan Little Theatre for years. He really likes this play and believes audiences will love it.
Justin Sullivan appears in all the performance as Paul Sycamore, the man who manufactures fireworks in the basement.
Sullivan enjoys acting and particularly loves this play and its sentiment—money isn’t everything.
Like Waid, he too has been performing with the Theatre for many years.
Sharon Burum is the director for the play. Burum has a long history with Duncan Little Theatre. She was the Stage Manager for the play “Oklahoma”, which was the first large production performed at the Simmons Center.
Other cast members include:
Derrick Miller plays Mr. Kirby and serves as one of the producers of the play. He is currently teaching journalism at the Duncan Middle School. Before teaching, he was a reporter for the Duncan Banner for nine years.
Carra Spigner, plays the role of the prim and proper Mrs. Kirby. Her biggest challenge will be keeping a straight face.

Rick Rogers, an eighty-five year old practicing attorney in Duncan, is playing the role of the IRS agent. In his spare time, which is limited, he carves and serves on the City Appeals Board.
His wife, Carolyn is also performing in the play. Not only does she love performing, she started the Duncan Trust Authority and helps with beautification of Duncan.

Kathrine Farrow serves as the co-set designer along with Michael Harris. Farrow has a role as a ballerina dancer.

Floyd Wininger has been working with the Theatre since 1981. He has not only acted in plays, but he has also directed. In this production he is playing the role of Grandpa.

Opening night is this Friday evening, November 15, beginning at 7:30 pm.
The next performance will be on the following night at 7:30. Additional performances will be on the November 22 & 23rd also at 7:30 pm.

I feel pretty good! I’m just glad we are almost done with our first nine weeks and we are still in school.
What Activities/Organizations have you participated in?
I am an officer in FCCLA, Beta, Student Council, and NHS. I play softball, cheer, run cross country, and play in Band.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to attend college and complete my nursing home career and go on to become a Nurse Practitioner.
Favorite memory at WHS?
I have a lot of WHS but my favorite would have to be the late nights our class would stay at school decorating hallways and making Sonic trips.
What teacher or class has best prepared you?
I attend Red River Technology school and those teachers have best prepared me for what college is going to be like. The other teacher that has best prepared me would have to be my mom; she has always told me straight forward “life is not easy.”
Give advice to an underclassman?:
Don’t let anyone bring you down. If you want to do something don’t let someone try and talk you out of it.
Who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank my mom. She has been to every game, banquet, and anything else I could think of. She has been my rock. Also I would like to thank Brooklyn for always being by my side and cheering me on.
What fears do you have about leaving?
I fear I will miss my friends more than I think I will. I don’t do very well when it comes to change, especially moving out and being on my own.
What are you going to miss most about being at WHS?
I’m going to miss being around all of my friends who I’ve grown up with. I’m going to miss eating lunch with my mom everyday.
What lessons have you learned from previous classes (class of 2020, etc)?
I have learned to enjoy the time spent in class with friends. Even though we all dislike work we will miss it one day.
What event did/do you most look forward to this year?
The event I look forward to the most this year is when I finally get an acceptance letter back from college.
Do you have any regrets?
I do not have any regrets. I have enjoyed my high school years.
The Cameron University Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts Department will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors” as well as scenes from the opera “Hansel and Gretel” featuring performances by CU vocal students. Performances are slated for Thursday and Friday, November 29-30, at 7:30 p.m. in the McCutcheon Recital Hall. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, military members, and students. CU students, faculty and staff are admitted at no charge with CU-ID. Student performers are Khalil Cabrera-Tosado, Codie Cowan, Celita Gonzalez, Eric Malloy, Corbyn Nauman, Josie Smotherman, all of Lawton, as well as Destiny Abila, Gabriel Caron, Mykayla Reuter, Altus; Heather Martin, Cache; Rachel McCurry, Comanche;Mikayla Stephenson, Duncan; and Reagan Williams, Newport, R.I. Williams and Stephenson will perform the role of Mother in “Amahl and the Night Visitors” – Williams on Thursday and Stephenson on Friday. Nauman will perform the role of Amahl on Thursday, and Abila will take on the role on Friday. In addition to her role in “Hansel and Gretel,” Martin served as choreographer for “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”
The presentation is a result of the Opera Workshop class, in which students not only sing but create the sets, costumes, props, and lighting. “Amahl and the Night Visitors” is directed by Scott Richard Klein, with musical direction by Christian Morren. Scenes from “Hansel and Gretel” are directed by Christian Morren. Pianists Doris Lambert and Yuika Chan accompany the operas.
Scenes from “Hansel and Gretel” will also be performed at two local elementary schools.
“We want to introduce young children to opera with a familiar story and in a fun way,” Morren says. “Both our campus performances and the school outreach are supported by the Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild. We are grateful to that local group for providing scholarships and funds to promote opera at Cameron and in the community.”
