Ryan Track Squads End Season at State Meet

 It was a disappointing end to what has been a notable track season for the Ryan Cowgirls.

 While posting several school record times through the course of the season, the competition at the Class A State Track Meet at Western Heights last Friday and Saturday proved to be a bit overwhelming for the four-member Cowgirl track squad.

 The Cowgirls failed to score in the meet which was won by Boise City with 72 points.

The best performance of the meet came by the 3,200-meter relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Holland Carter and Juliet Spangler.

This team, which broke the school record four times during the season and owns the top six performances in school history, recorded a time of 11:17.26.

That mark is the second best recorded time in the event in school history – some 17 seconds behind last week’s regional meet mark that established the newest school record.

In the 800 meters, Carter ran into a talented field that included Ellie Gilbreath’s meet record performance. The Regent Prep student recorded a time of 2:16.4, which was a full second better than the previous state track meet mark.

Carter’s time was 2:39.08, which was her personal best time of the 2018 season.

Spangler competed in the 3,200 meters at the state meet and like Holland faced a very talented field for the event which featured another state meet record-breaking performance by Gilbreath.

Spangler’s time of 13:49.54 was only her fourth best performance of the season.

The talented Ryan sophomore, however owns the top eight times in this event in school history including a time of 13:37.56 – a school record set at Konawa earlier this season.

The lone representative at the state track meet for the Cowboys was Walker Rawlings.

Rawlings had a tough weekend against an experienced field. Only three of the 16 competitors in the event were freshmen or sophomores.

Rawlings’ mark of 34-2.5 was well short of his season-best throw in the regional meet a week prior.

In the discus, Rawlings fell short of placing in the event with a throw of 114-07.

OVAL OBSERVATIONS: A big apology to Rawlings is due as last week’s edition of the Waurika News-Journal tabbed him as a freshman, but he is a sophomore at Ryan High School….However, Rawlings’ older brother, McCain, is the last state champion in track for the Cowboys as he won the shot put in 2015….Prior to that, the last gold medal performance by a Cowboy thinclad was in 1988 when Gary Waitman won the discus event….The Cowgirls have never had a state champion in any event in track and field….It was the third straight year the Cowboys failed to score at the state meet…The Cowboys have only recorded points at the state meet in six seasons since 2000….The highest finish ever for the Cowboys at the state track meet was fourth in 1973 when the mile relay team claimed the gold medal….The Cowgirls have not fared any better in state competition having only scored on four occasions since the 2000 season….The Cowgirls have had only one top ten finish in the state meet and that came in 1990 when the Cowgirls scored 14 points and tied for ninth place….The Cowgirls’ 1,600-meter relay squad did not qualify for the state meet, but turned in an outstanding 2018 season setting the school record in the event five times…..The best time prior to this season in the event was posted in 1990.

Cowgirl Harriers On A Roll Heading Into Regional Meet

 The fourth-ranked Ryan Cowgirl cross country team has accomplished something no team has ever done at Ryan – win three consecutive meets.

That feat was accomplished last Saturday when the Cowgirls claimed the team title at the Healdton Invitational on a cold fall morning near Healdton Lake.

And, the performances could not come at a better time as the Cowgirls prepare for the Class 2A Regional Cross Country meet on Saturday hosted by Waurika in Harmon Park.

The Cowgirls recorded 25 team points – the fewest in school history – and outdistanced second-place Waurika who finished with 41 points. The previous best score by a team was 26 set earlier this year at Frederick and last year at the Cameron meet.

Lilybet Harmon continued her outstanding senior season with another first-place finish in the individual race. It was also her third straight individual title.

Harmon covered the 2.1-mile course in a time of 13:23.88. She also won the meet titles at Sulphur and Frederick.

Katelyn Dabbs, perhaps the most improved runner for the Cowgirls this season, nabbed second place with a time of 13:39.44, which was 14 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

Lily York captured sixth place with a time of 14:11.89 and Juliet Spangler finished eighth with a time of 14:15.94. Alicen Williams finished out the top ten performances by finishing 10th time a mark of 14:25.09.

Whittany Spangler also medaled for the Cowgirls by finishing in the 22nd spot, which is just one spot below her season-best set at Frederick. Her time was not available.

Grace Stamper finished 29th in the race – her best finish of the season.

The junior girls squad finished third in the team race behind Velma-Alma and Waurika.

The high school boys did not compete at Healdton

The high school girls and boys will be in action Saturday at the Class 2A Regional Cross Country Meet at Waurika on Saturday. The girls will run at 12 noon, while the boys will compete at 12:45 p.m.

The Cowgirls have an excellent chance to win the meet which would be the first regional title in school history and only the third time for a team to advance to the state meet. The top seven teams will qualify for the state competition.

Oil Field & Southern 8 Conferences

 Basketball awards for Ryan and Waurika have been announced by the Southern Eight and Oil Field conferences.

Waurika’s Liberti Simmons nabbed the top honor for the Oil Field Conference as she was named the most valuable player of the conference for the 2022 season.

Simmons was the leading scorer for Coach Kalee Baxter’s Lady Eagles and helped lead Waurika to a 20-win season that ended in the regional consolation bracket finals.

Also earning an individual award for Waurika was Tallin Mora. Mora was named the Southern Eight’s outstanding defensive player.

Mora was a defensive standout for the Lady Eagles and was often tabbed to guard the top players of teams Waurika faced throughout the season.

Frederick’s Dannie McClung and Cade Roady snared the most valuable player awards for the Southern Eight Conference.

Chrissa Gomez of Geronimo was named the Southern Eight’s top offensive player of the year on the girls’ side, while Big Pasture’s Carson Coats was named the top offensive boys player for the conference.

Brennan Turner of Big Pasture was voted by the coaches as the outstanding defensive player for the boys.

The Oil Field Conference selects only a most valuable player and Velma-Alma’s Tyler Stewart grabbed the honor among the conference’s boys.

Selected to the Southern Eight all-conference team for the Lady Eagles were Simmons and Gracie Walling.

Cassidie Berry of Waurika was named to the all-conference squad by the Oil Field coaches.

Treyton Torrez of Waurika was an all-conference selection in both the Oil Field and Southern Eight conferences. Torrez, who missed a few of the early games of the season, was the top point producer for coach Garret Bachand’s Eagles.

Ryan’s Racen Williams was named to the all-conference team for the Southern Eight Conference. He was the only Cowboy selected from coach Lane Weldon’s team that finished with a 14-9 mark. Williams was the leading scorer for the Cowboys.

The Southern Eight also named Ryan’s Jasmine Villarreal to the all-conference team. She was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls in the 2022 campaign.

Berry, Isaac Camarillo and Slade Cathey of Waurika were selected to play in the Southern Eight’s all-star game that is slated for Monday at Geronimo.

Mora and Malachi Dodson will represent Waurika in the Oil Field Conference all-star game to be held at Waurika on March 8.

Ryan’s Alicen Williams, Westin Jennings and Landen Alexander were selections for the Southern Eight all-star fray that will feature athletes from all the schools in the conference.

Rainy Friday Night at Maysville Unkind to Cowboys

 The Ryan Cowboys spotted Maysville 38 straight points and could never recover in dropping a 54-6 verdict to the Warriors in a game that ended at the half.

The contest was delayed twice by lightening, but the Cowboys were never really in the game that was played in rainy and miserable conditions.

The two delays totaled about two hours in length.

The Cowboys will try to get back on track tomorrow night (Friday) as they will play host to the Caddo Bruins in a homecoming contest. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Givens Sports Complex.

The Bruins will bring a 1-2 record to Ryan. Caddo lost its season-opener to Wilson, 58-16 and then fell to Dewar, 54-6. Last week the Bruins picked up their only win of the season with a 34-6 victory over Thackervile.

The game was barely underway when the first weather delay occurred and the Cowboys trailed only, 8-0.

But when play resumed, the Warriors got another score before the end of the quarter to up the lead to 16-0.

Early in the second quarter the Warriors increased the lead to 24-0.

From that point in the game it became the Gunner Aprill show for the Warriors as the talented quarterback scored four straight times for the Warriors.

The Cowboys got on the board late in the second quarter after a second weather delay and sandwiched between Aprill’s four touchdowns. Grayson Tomberlin broke loose for a 55-yard run which cut the Maysville lead to 36-6.

Aprill got the third and fourth of his scores to close out the scoring for Maysville. His third TD of the night came on a two-yard run.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Warriors executed an onside kick and just one play later Aprill scooted 40 yards to seal the mercy-rule victory for the Warriors.

Tomberlin led the Cowboys in rushing with 70 yards on eight carries, but the Warriors held the Ryan offense in check most of the night.

Aprill finished the night with 125 yards on nine carries for the Warriors while Gunner Chambers added 101 yards on just six carries. The Warriors rolled up 322 yards on just 22 carries in the shortened contest.

Tomberlin led the defensive effort for the Cowboys with five tackles.

RYAN RAMBLINGS: Despite the loss the Cowboys hold a 4-3 lead in the series with Maysville….The 54 points scored by the Warriors is the most ever against the Cowboys….The combined total of 60 points by the two teams is the most in the seven-game series with the Warriors…Maysville is unranked in the Class C poll in The Daily Oklahoman, but is ranked sixth in the latest okprep.com poll…

Cowgirls Split Games; Cowboys Drop Two Games

It has been a busy last few days for the Ryan Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball squads.

After playing in the Healdton Tournament over the weekend, the two squads had regular season games at Bray-Doyle on Monday and Geronimo on Raymon West Court at Ryan on Tuesday.

Ryan continues the busy schedule as the regular season begins to come to a close. The Cowboys and Cowgirls are slated to travel to Turner tonight and will return to action at Grandfield on Monday. Action begins at 6:30 on both nights.

In Tuesday’s contests, Geronimo took a 41-37 decision over the Cowgirls, while the Blue Jays completed the sweep with a 58-42 victory over the Cowboys.

The Cowgirls and Cowboys split the twinbill with Bray-Doyle. The Cowgirls picked up a 55-42 win over the Lady Donkeys, while the Cowboys dropped a tough 45-35 loss to Bray-Doyle.

One of the highlights on Tuesday night was a second Cowgirl was cited for joining the 1,000-point club during this season. Lily York, who reached the mark earlier, was honored after scoring her first points of the night.

The Cowgirls, however, struggled throughout most of the game on Tuesday against the Lady Blue Jays. Geronimo established a 10-5 lead after the first quarter and then found themselves trailing, 23-14, at the intermission.

 In the third quarter, the Cowgirls mounted a rally with a 17-5 run that saw Ryan take the lead at 31-28 after three quarters.

 However, the task of playing five games in six nights caught up with the Cowgirls in the fourth quarter as they could not maintain the lead and Geronimo outscored the Cowgirls, 13-6.

 Samantha Good, the other Cowgirl to reach the 1,000 point plateau, was the top scorer for the Cowgirls with 13 points, while Juliet Spangler added 11 tallies.

 The Cowgirls have now lost six of the last seven meetings with the Lady Blue Jays.

 The Cowboys fell to Geronimo for the sixth time in the past seven meetings and it was their fourth straight loss of this season.

The game was essentially decided in the first quarter as Geronimo used a 17-3 run to build a big lead.

The Cowboys were able to trim the deficit to 26-19 by halftime, but could not continue the rally.

The Blue Jays outscored the Cowboys, 19-11, in the third quarter to lead 45-30 and ensure there would be no come-from-behind success for the Cowboys on this night.

Andrew Villerreal and Landen Alexander each had 10 points for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys struggled at the free throw line as they connected on only 12 of 23 attempts from the charity stripe.

In Monday’s game at Bray-Doyle, the Cowgirls got off to a slow start.

Really it was more like an awful start as the Lady Donkeys built a 17-7 lead early in the game, but the Cowgirls rallied through the next three quarters to secure the win.

Free throw shooting can make a difference in a game as many contests are won and lost at the charity stripe.

One of the reasons for the slow start by the Cowgirls was only 4 of 12 shooting from the free throw line – a 33% mark.

Meanwhile, Bray-Doyle was a perfect six of six at the free throw line and that helped the Lady Donkeys to gain the early lead.

But, one of the key factors in the Cowgirl rally was sharper shooting at the free throw line in the second half as they connected on 13 of 16 free throws.

The Cowgirls actually took a narrow 20-19 lead into the intermission.

A 14-6 run in the third quarter helped the Cowgirls get control of the game as they led, 34-25, heading into the final quarter.

The Cowgirl offense came alive in the fourth quarter with 21 points and while they gave up 17 to the Lady Donkeys, the Cowgirls secured the 13-point win.

Three Cowgirls were in double figures. York was the top scorer for the Cowgirls with 20 points – including six of six free throws in the final quarter.

Good contributed 13 and Spangler added 11 points for the Cowgirls.

 The 55 points against Bray-Doyle by the Cowgirls is the most since the 1992 season and the two teams have split the last six meetings.

There was no come-from-behind story for the Cowboys, however, as Bray-Doyle was able to pick up its first win of the season.

The Donkeys sped to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and managed to thwart any hope of a Cowboy rally.

Marshall Loveday led the Donkey offensive output in the first quarter with 12 of his game-high 19 points coming in the initial quarter.

The Cowboys cut into the lead before the half with an 11-6 advantage in the second quarter to leave the deficit for the Cowboys at 25-19 at the half.

It was a brutal third quarter that sealed the Cowboys’ fate as they managed only three points in the quarter. The Donkeys were able to extend the lead to 34-22 at the end of the period.

The Cowboys were able to gain a 13-11 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the Bray-Doyle lead.

Below average free throw shooting helped prevent any hope of a Ryan comeback as the Cowboys connected on only nine of 20 free throws for the game.

Villarreal and Grayson Tomberlin paced the Cowboys in scoring with eight points each.

 The Cowboys have now lost three straight to the Donkeys.

Waurika Nine Falls To Empire In District Title Game

 It was a wild district tournament for the Waurika Eagles at Central High last Thursday and Friday.

 Normally, when a team scores 30 runs in two games they come out on top on both. But, when a team gives up 27 runs, they normally lose both contests.

 However, Coach Glenn Howard’s squad went 1-1 in the first two games of the district tourney. The Eagles dropped a 15-5 decision to Empire in the first game of the tourney, but came back to defeat Central High, 25-12, to earn a berth in the district title game.

 Empire proved to be too much for the Eagles and hand Waurika a 12-0 defeat to claim the district championship.

 Empire will move on to the Class A Regional at Amber-Pocasset today and they were to have met the host school in the first round.

 In Friday’s championship game, the Eagles could get nothing going at the plate.

 Empire had a 3-0 lead after two innings and struck for six runs in the top of the third. The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth that ended the game after Waurika could not score in the bottom of the fifth.  

In the first game of the tourney the Eagles got off to a good start. Zachary Brown got an infield hit with the bases loaded to score a run and give Waurika 1-0 lead after one inning.

The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the second on Hunter Wesberry’s two-run double, but Empire came back with a run in the bottom of the inning leaving Waurika with a 3-1 lead after two innings.

The Eagles added another run in the top of the third as Jordan Watkins led off with a triple and Gatlin Black scratched out an infield hit to score Watkins.

Empire responded with another run in the bottom of the inning, but the Eagles clung to a 4-2 lead after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Michael Bryant was hit by a pitch and came around to score to put the Eagles in front, 5-2.

Empire knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth with three runs that included a two-run double and an RBI-single.

The wheels came off in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Eagles as Empire exploded for 10 runs to end the game on the run-rule.

The Bulldogs capitalized on four walks by adding eight hits and three stolen bases. The big hits in the inning came on a bases-loaded double and a two-run double.

This set up an elimination game between the Eagles and Central High and it was a wild affair.

Central High picked up six runs in the bottom of the first inning and things looked dismal for the Eagles to advance.

In the top of the third, however, Waurika struck for seven tallies helped along by three walks in the inning – two of those with the bases loaded gave the Eagles their first two runs.

Seth Waid followed with an RBI-single. M. Bryant followed with a bases-loaded walk and Jordan Watkins had a two-run single to cap the uprising.

Central High regained the lead at 8-7 in the bottom of the third with two runs helped along by two walks and an error.

Waurika responded, however, essentially blowing the game open with a six-run uprising.

Kevin Garcia was hit by a pitch, Ben Hernandez walked and Waid followed with a two-run double.

Colton Bryant walked to load the bases and M. Bryant followed with a bases-loaded walk. Brown followed with a two-run single and Watkins belted a two-run double that scored two more to put Waurika ahead, 13-8.

But, the Eagles were far from done as they added seven runs in the top of the fifth. Big hits included Waid’s RBI-single, M. Bryant’s RBI-infield single, Brown’s two-run double and another RBI-single by Watkins.

The Eagles left the bases loaded, but had a commanding 20-8 advantage heading to the bottom of the fifth.

The Bronchos tried to make it interesting with four runs in the fifth including a sacrifice fly and a three-run home run that cut the lead to 20-12.

The Eagles put all hopes of a Central High rally with five more runs in the top of the sixth.

A run-scoring single by Watkins and an RBI-double by Black were followed by a two-run triple by Kevin Garcia. Garcia scored on an error to set the final margin.

Watkins had four hits in the contest that led to four runs batted in. Waid had three hits and three runs batted in and M. Bryant scored four runs and had three runs batted in.

 The Eagles had 18 hits in the game.

The victory over the Bronchos ended a five-game losing streak by Waurika in district tournament play.

Waurika closed out the 2017 campaign with a 10-15 mark.

The future is somewhat bright for the Eagles on the diamond as the entire team returns for 2019 with the exception of M. Bryant, who played his final game for the Eagles in the district tournament.

“I was happy with our season,” said coach Glenn Howard on reflected on the season. “The team chemistry was good and I felt like we really started to put things together after spring break.

“Hopefully we can continue that improvement next season with the numbers we have returning,” added Howard, who finished his second year as the head coach of the Eagles.

Ryan, Waurika Cagers Set To Enter Post-Season Play

The slate is clean.

While regular season records mean something for district tournament pairings and seeding, every basketball squad in Oklahoma starts the post-season with a 0-0 mark.

That is good news for the roundball squads at Waurika and Ryan as all four teams enter the playoffs with losing records.

Play begins tomorrow night (Friday) in the Class A District Tournament for both Waurika and Ryan.

Both Waurika teams will travel to Ft. Cobb-Broxton to face Ringling, while both Ryan teams will journey to Central High to face Bray-Doyle.

The girls’ tilts will open the tournament at 6:30 p.m. at both sites.

Awaiting the winner of the Waurika-Ringling games will be Ft. Cobb, while Central High will take on the winner of the Ryan and Bray-Doyle matchups.

The championship games will be played Saturday with the girls’ games tipping at 6:30 p.m.

Waurika and Ringling drew a tough assignment for the district tourney.

The only regular season meeting between the two Jefferson County schools was canceled because of the flu.

However, the boys’ team that survives that contest will have to face a legitimate state title contender.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton is 22-3 on the year and the only three losses have been to ranked teams in Class B, Class 2A and Class 5A. The Mustangs have won nine straight contests.

The Mustangs, ranked second in Class A, won the Caddo County Tournament and garnered runner up honors in tournaments at Chattanooga and Anadarko.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton will be well-rested as the Mustangs last played last Saturday against Walters giving them a week to prepare for the winner of Waurika and Ringling.

The Blue Devil boys come into the tournament with an 8-10 mark. They have been inconsistent much of the season, but should be competitive against the Eagles.

Coach Joe Masoner’s Waurika boys have also struggled to find wins in 2018. The Eagles were 4-13 heading into last Tuesday’s game with Grandfield.

Waurika has had three games canceled because of the flu and have only played once since January 23 before last Tuesday.

The Eagles have had turnover troubles most of the season averaging almost 20 miscues a game.

Cache Arellano has been the ringleader for the Eagles averaging over nine points a game and pulling down an average of eight rebounds a game.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton handed Waurika an 81-28 loss in the first round of the Chattanooga Tournament.

The girls’ bracket of the district tourney at Ft. Cobb will be much the same as the boys’ bracket.

The Lady Mustangs will be the overwhelming favorite as they come in ranked 15th in Class A and won the Chattanooga Tournament and were the runner up at the tough Caddo County fray.

Ft. Cobb-Broxton is 15-10 on the year, but only 5-5 in its last 10 games.

Ringling’s girls will come into the tournament with a 9-6 record and have one tournament title to their credit – the St. Jo, Texas Invitational.

The Waurika girls have struggled all year under first-year coach Kalee Baxter and hold a 5-11 record not including Tuesday’s result with Grandfield.

The Lady Eagles have been led most of the season by Madison Roberson. Roberson has averaged 15 points a game and averages about 15 boards a game.

In the district tournament at Central High, none of the boys’ squads will enter the tournament with a winning record – and it isn’t close.

Ryan, with a mark of 5-16, was granted the top seed, but Bray-Doyle chose to match up with the Cowboys in the first round of the tournament.

Central High’s boys started the season 0-10, but earned the consolation title at the Black Diamond Tournament at Rush Springs at the beginning of 2018. The Bronchos are 4-16 on the year.

Bray-Doyle has had a tough year as well as the Cowboys and Bronchos.

The Donkeys have a 3-15 record heading to the district tourney not including last Monday’s results.

The Cowboys own a win over the Donkeys just before Christmas, but Bray-Doyle has been playing a bit better as of late.

Coach Judd Matthes’ squad has struggled to score during most of the season.

While a number of Cowboys can contribute points on a given night, Ryan lacks the go-to player that is a consistent scorer.

Skyler Parkhill has been the top point-getter for the Cowboys overall.

Central High drew the top seed in the girls’ bracket and comes into the tournament with a 15-8 mark that does not include last Tuesday’s game with Sterling.

The Lady Bronchos won the Minco Invitational and were runner up at the Black Diamond Tournament.

Bray-Doyle’s girls own a two-point win over Ryan in a regular season meeting before Christmas and have a 12-8 mark not including last Monday’s contest with Oklahoma School for the Deaf.

The Lady Donkeys won the Maysville Shootout in December, but are only 4-7 since January 1 – not including the game with OSD.

The Cowgirls, under first-year coach Steve Spangler, have compiled a 7-14 record for the season.

It has been a struggle on the offensive end for the Cowgirls most of the season, but Lily York has been the top point-getter for the season especially in the recent part of the schedule.

Ryan closed out the regular season, however, with two of their better games on the offensive end of the court.

The Cowgirls will start four sophomores and only one senior. The roster has been limited most of the season due to lack of participation and injuries.

Both the district champion and the district runner up will advance to next week’s regional tournament.

Proposed Football Districts For 2020 and 2021 Released

 Every two years the football schools in Oklahoma are regrouped into districts.

New enrollment figures place Waurika around the middle of Class B and Ryan will move to Class C for football for the next two seasons.

In early January the districts will be finalized by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.

The Oklahoma Football Coaches Association makes recommendations to the OSSAA and those recommendations have been released.

Class B is divided into eight six-team districts, while Class C is made up of four eight-team districts.

It is recommended that Waurika be assigned to District B-3.

Two of Waurika’s district foes from the past two years are part of the recommendations. Central High and Empire will probably join the Eagles in the new district.

Joining the three schools will more than likely be Cyril, Snyder and Tipton. Tipton, who has dominated play in Class C the past four years, has moved into Class B for the next two years.

Bray-Doyle, one of Waurika’s district foes this past season has been recommended for District B-4, while Velma-Alma will begin district play in District B-4 along with Alex, Caddo, Strother and Southwest Covenant.

The Eagles will have five non-district games on the 2020 schedule which will be finalized soon after the district recommendations have been approved.

Ryan has been placed in District C-2 by the coaches’ association. All the other teams in the district have been in Class C the past two years.

None of the teams recommended for placement in District C-2 will be totally unfamiliar to the Cowboys.

The district will likely include Temple and Grandfield – both long-time rivals of Ryan.

Also recommended to be in the district are Fox, Maysville, Mountain View-Gotebo, Paoli and Thackerville.

All of those schools have been on the Cowboys’ schedule but it has been 10 years since the Cowboys have faced Fox and Paoli in the regular season.

The districts are to be finalized at a meeting on January 15.

Businesses Invited to Decorate Doors

The Waurika High School Student Council is inviting downtown businesses to once again participate in the annual Homecoming Door Decorating Contest!

The theme this year is “Once Upon An Eagle… (fairy tale edition!)”  Businesses are asked to decorate the outside of their businesses and show their spirit for Homecoming, taking place on Friday, September 16th.  Doors will be judged Friday before the parade, and the winning business will be announced at the Homecoming parade held at 2pm downtown.  

The winning business will get to display the traveling Eagle Spirit Trophy for the year! 

Small Group of Ryan Thinclads Compete at Covington-Douglas

A limited number of Ryan Cowgirl track team members made the three-hour drive to Covington-Douglas High School Monday to compete in the Covington-Douglas Invitational.

The Cowgirls, who did not compete in every event in the 36-team field, scored 32 points on the day to tie Sharon-Mutual for seventh place in the meet.

Thomas was the meet champion with 111 points followed by Pawhuska which finished with 79 points.

The meet was for Class A and Class 2A schools only.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Lilybet Harmon, Lily York, Juliet Spangler and Holland Carter brought home a silver medal with a time of 11:05.40.

The posted time is the third best in school history and the second best time recorded this season by the Cowgirl quartet.

Spangler and Alicen Williams finished second and third respectively in the 3,200 meter run. Spangler’s time was 14:08.8 – her second best time of the season. Williams was clocked at 14:34.95 and was over 30 seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher.

The only other scorer for the Cowgirls came in the 800 meters where Carter managed a fifth place finish. Her time of 2:41.30 is her best this season.
