Cowboys Set to Battle Snyder for Season Opener

0

The 99th season of high school football at Ryan is slated to begin tomorrow night (Friday) when the Snyder Cyclones invade the Bob Givens Sports Complex.

Kickoff for the season opener for both teams is set for 7:30 p.m.

This will be the earliest season opener in school history as the contest is part of Zero Week in high school football in Oklahoma.

Teams can elect to start the season one week early and forego a second scrimmage date. The advantage is teams that play during Zero Week will have a week off during the regular season.

Snyder ended the Cowboys’ season a year ago at Ryan as the Cyclones took advantage of numerous Ryan turnovers to post a 38-8 victory.

It was the first year returning to the playoffs for Ryan after a two-year absence and the Cowboys of first-year head coach Tony Tomberlin are looking to improve on last season’s 6-5 record.

Tomberlin will be taking over for long-time head coach Stan Mueggenborg after serving as an assistant for the veteran coach the past 12 years.

The outlook for the Cowboys for 2018 is guarded. The coaching staff faces the tall task of replacing six of eight starters on the defensive side of the ball.

However, quarterback Grayson Tomberlin returns for his sophomore campaign after starting all 11 games a year ago as a freshman.

Joining Tomberlin, last season’s district newcomer of the year, in the backfield will be talented senior and all-district running back Skyler Parkhill.

Both players will give Ryan a solid nucleus from which to build on offense.

Tomberlin finished last season with 638 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. He also threw for 731 yards on 44 completions and 12 touchdown passes.

Parkhill was the second leading rusher last season with 620 yards on 93 carries and five rushing touchdowns.

The Cowboys will feature a freshman in the backfield with Caleb Ferrin expected to start at the other running back position.

Kalen Weldon will return at one end for the Cowboys and Andrew Villerreal will move from the backfield to the other end position.

Two seniors, Sam Brown and Justin Williams, along with sophomore Trey Bryant will be counted on to try to open up running lanes for the backs and give Tomberlin time to find receivers.

The Cowboys will feature a bit more wide-open attack with more spread offense and implementing the pistol formation.

Defensively, things are a bit unsettled. Not only will there be six new starters, but coming out of last week’s scrimmage, there are still some battles going on for starting positions.

Pacen Wiest and Bryant are battling for a starting role at nose guard and the defensive end positions are still up for grabs in the 3-2 defense.

The defense will need to mature quickly as Snyder, the Cowboys’ first opponent, will bring a potent offensive attack that will feature one of the state’s top sprinters in Trevor Evans. He was the state champion in Class A in the 400 meters and the runner up in the 100 meters last spring.

“I would say at this point the offense is a step ahead of the defense,” Tomberlin noted heading into this week’s final few days of practice.

“On defense we are still trying to figure some things out,” Tomberlin said.

Tomberlin was not particularly pleased with the Cowboys’ scrimmage with Maud last week.

“We have a lot of improving to do, but we will watch film and we will get better,” said Tomberlin.

“We are looking forward to some things and we are trying to get some excitement back in the program. The kids’ attitudes are good and we are lifting every day and they are getting stronger,” Tomberlin added.

Snyder will provide a tough challenge for the Cowboys’ season opener. The Cyclones are picked fourth District B-3, but ahead of them are Carnegie, Alex and Cyril – all top 15 teams in the preseason.

Tomberlin will be assisted by first-year coach Austin Masoner.

Trevan Jimboy appointed Director of Youth Activities at Chickasaw Nation

0

ADA, Okla. – Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby has named Trevan Jimboy tribal Director of Youth Activities.

Mr. Jimboy is a nine-year employee of the Chickasaw Nation. Prior to promotion, he served as manager of Facility Services.

“Trevan Jimboy understands that engaging young people in positive activities and offering positive role models is vital to their growth and development,” Governor Anoatubby said. “His experience and commitment to Chickasaw youth make him a great fit for this position.”

Mr. Jimboy will manage many of the youth camps sponsored by the Chickasaw Nation. Youth camps are hosted by several departments throughout the Nation, and the bulk of the specialty camps – such as “Camp Survivor” – will be under his management.

“I am looking forward to working with children,” Mr. Jimboy said. “Being able to come in and make a difference in the lives of Chickasaw children is what attracted me to the position. The Nation is in a unique setting to help youth, to build and encourage athletics and build involved citizens within our respective communities.”

During discussions with Gov. Anoatubby about the position, Mr. Jimboy said he related how coaches encouraged him and helped develop his abilities through mentoring and coaching.

“It meant a lot to me as a student when coaches would say ‘that was a great hit’ or ‘good hustle on the basketball court,’” he said. “I want to bring that same type of mentoring to my new position.”

Mr. Jimboy has been putting coaching and mentoring to work in his own family.

He and wife, Rachel, have five children, and most are involved in extracurricular activities.

Byng High School senior Mikaela is a 17-year-old speech and drama aficionado who will attend East Central University in Ada to study mass communications.

MacKenzie, a 14-year-old Byng freshman, is active on the basketball team. Titus, a 6-year-old Homer Elementary student is active in basketball and in soccer where he participates in a Norman Youth Soccer Organization. Twin daughters Parker and Abigail round out the Chickasaw family. They are 15 months old and are not active in sports … “yet,” Mr. Jimboy proclaimed with a laugh.

The family is large, and Rachel is “Wonder Woman” in the eyes of her husband. Mrs. Jimboy works full time for the Nation as manager of Sick Child Care. She is a registered nurse and has been an employee of the Nation for a decade.

Meet the Candidates for District 3 and the Waurika City Commission

0

Voters will go to the polls this coming Tuesday, June 26, 2018 to decide who will serve District 3 as the County Commissioner and who will serve on the Waurika City Commission.

We sat down with all the candidates to give them a chance to let the voters know a little bit more about them.

Last week, we featured the interview with the current District 3 Commissioner Ricky Martin.

Ricky Martin

First, we begin this article with the other two candidates for the District 3 seat, Macy Lovett and Kenny Wilkerson.

Macy Lovett – District 3 Commissioner Candidate

Macy Lovett

Macy Lovett was raised in Waurika and lived in Jefferson County his whole life.

Although he went door to door when he was a child campaigning for his dad when he was running for State Representative, this is his first time to run for any political office.

He is throwing his hat in the ring for the District 3 Commissioner position because he feels he can contribute to the success of Jefferson County.

One of his goals if elected is to improve the budget by “going after federal funds.”

He believes there are grants and funding available at the federal level.

He also wants to improve the roads within the district.

Lovett has worked hard his whole life starting when he began working for his dad at the Culligan Water Treatment Company here in Waurika while attending school.

After seven years, his dad retired and sold the business, Lovett then went to work in Wichita Falls for a subsidiary of ALCOA for the next seven years.

Next, he worked for the Goodyear tire plant in Lawton. He stayed with them for ten years.

He then moved out to the family farm east of Ryan and has worked for England Farm and Fuel for the past six years.

If elected he plans to serve the citizens of the district by being attentive and treating everyone with respect, listening to their concerns.

He says he will always be up front and honest with his constituents. He also commits to working hard for the community and the success of the county.

Kenneth Wilkerson – District 3 Commissioner Candidate

Kenneth Wilkerson

Kenneth Wilkerson has also lived in Jefferson County all of his life.

He was raised in Grady, Oklahoma and attended school in Ryan.

He moved to Terral in 1978.

He was a part of the last graduating class of Terral High School.

Wilkerson enjoys helping in any way he can in the community.

He has helped with the Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Department.

Wilkerson has worked for District 3 in the past.

Much of his work experience includes driving a truck for twenty-nine years.

During that time he got to see much of the United States but prefers life in Jefferson County.

He also wants to improve the county budget and improve the county roads.

Making the county the best it can be by giving back for how good it has been to him is a driving motivation in his life.

Rickey Porterfield – Waurika City Commissioner Candidate

Rickey Porterfield

Rickey Porterfield is a lifelong citizen of Jefferson County. He was born at the old hospital on Elm Street on Friday the 13th.

He is running for a seat on the Waurika City Commission.

Porterfield’s family has served the county in various capacities.

His father was a police officer back in the days when officers had to supply their own cars.

Like many, he is concerned about the increase in the water bill.

He is going into this race with his eyes open and says he will not make any promises that he can not keep.

Porterfield worked for the Waurika Fire Department for 27 years.

During that time he made lots of friends and impacted lots of people in a positive way.

He has also helped with the Ambulance service.

Porterfield worked for the Elliott Manufactured Homes in Waurika for a while and now works for local rancher John Ross.

He is running in order to help the community in any way he can.

James Terry – Waurika City Commissioner Candidate

James Terry

James Terry is a familiar face in Waurika.

He is seeking a seat on the city commission to make improvements.

Lowing the water bills and improving the streets are his main two goals.

Terry was raised in Ryan and in Oklahoma City.

Terry moved back to Waurika 10 years ago.

He is famous for his watermelons.

His other occupation is mowing yards during the summertime.

Jacob Eck – Seeking Re-Election to the Waurika City Commission

Jacob Eck

Jacob Eck was elected to fill an unexpired term and is now seeking re-election.

Eck is quick to point out that the success of the city commission has been a group effort of all the commissioners. He says the commissioners are working well together.

He is grateful that the city is no longer in debt and is looking forward to continued growth.

Recently he said the city was able to save the citizens around $300,000 by refinancing and consolidating loans.

He is excited about the future of Waurika.

If re-lected he wants to see the city to continue to improve financially.

Eck’s reason for seeking another term is for the sake of continuity. He doesn’t want to see the city revert back to the way it was a few years ago.

He now understands how the city works, especially the city budget, and wants to maintain the growth and stability the city is currently enjoying.

Eck says that the inner workings of city government are more complex than many realize.

One of the things he has enjoyed is learning how city government works.

For instance there are limits on what the members of the council can and can’t do. That knowledge helps improve the relationship with other entities in the community like the chamber of commerce. It allows them to work together more efficiently.

Eck is proud of the hard work of the city employees in making Waurika a better place.

He said one of the things the citizens should be proud of is that one of Carole Eakin’s goals of seeing the water towers repaired and cleaned is coming to fruition.

It’s his goal that the city grow and be able to hire more employees in order to better serve the community.

Another goal of his is to see the golf course operating and successful again.

Eck says he is accessible to citizens and values their input. If their suggestion is not feasible or possible he always tries to explain why.

He understands the concerns citizens have about the increased water rate.

Eck explains that the rate increases have been necessary to ensure the balanced budget and keeping the city in the black.

Henry Lara – Seeking Re-Election to the Waurika City Commission

Henry Lara

Henry Lara has been on the commission for three years. He said the first two years “you have to sit back watch and learn. During the third year, you have to remember that you are only one vote out of five. For instance, I voted against the 7.5 percent rate increase on the water bill. I want to see the town grow. I want to see more jobs come to Waurika.”

Lara is grateful for the improvements over the past three years. He even bragged on the efforts of Jacob Eck with the Downtown Again program and he was grateful for the new Farmer’s Market.

In the future Lara wants to upgrade the city vehicles. They are old he says and even lack air conditioning.

He believes the city is on the right track.

If elected, Lara states that his next term will be better than his first term. “I’m more knowledgeable, I can look more deeply into the subject matter and am a little wiser today.”

“There’s a good harmony among the commissioners,” he says. He believes they all want what is best for Waurika.

Garcia Settling in as New Fire Chief

0

Randal Garcia has been the Ryan Fire chief since May of this year. However, he has been a member of the fire department since around 2008.

He says everyone has come together and the support he has received has been great.

He is the brother of Stephanie Wesberry and the son of Josey and  Mio Garcia of Terral. (Josey is pictured on the back page at her restaurant known as Mama Josey’s in Terral.)

Randal is grateful for how things have progressed and the way Waurika and Ryan have worked together.

We’ve had some training with Waurika he says.

Last Saturday the Fire Department held their first 5K Run fundraiser. Many of the Ryan track teams as well as members of the community participated.

The money will go toward the upgrading and repairing of some of the fire trucks.

Along with the 5K Run the department sold T-shirts that said, “Stop Drop and Run 5K and Fun Run.”

Participants had the option of running or walking the 5K.

There may still be some shirts available. The cost of each shirt is $10 for small through XXL and $15 for #XL.

The hot dogs and hamburgers served at the fundraiser were excellent. Donations were taken for the meal.

New Pastor Arrives in Ryan

0

Pictured left is Alex and Naomi Alejandro along with their three kids: AJ (7th grade), Ava (4th grade), and Axel (2nd grade).

Alex and his wife Naomi worked in education in Wichita Falls before moving to Ryan.

Alex worked at Zundy Elementary as a bilingual teacher, and Naomi worked at Milam Elementary as the campus principal.

Although the Alejandros loved their jobs and the community they served, they answered the call to full-time ministry this past summer.

Since moving to Ryan they have been overwhelmed with the welcomes and well wishes they have received from the community.

They are now the new Pastors of the First Assembly of God Church in Ryan.

Services at the Ryan Assembly begin each Sunday at 10:30 am and 5:00 pm. Soon, they plan to hold Sunday School classes each Sunday morning at 9:30 am.

The Alejandros wish to thank everyone for their kindness in welcoming them to Ryan. They look forward to meeting more people and becoming more acquainted with the community.

Members of the church have expressed their excitement for the arrival of the Alejandros into their church family.

Round Ryan April 12 2018

0

What a week we have had around Ryan in regards to our weather.  We’ve had some really beautiful weather. We’ve had some great days to get outside and work on the yard, or whatever pleasurable things are to get us outside because it was so pleasant.  Well, after Friday afternoon was upon us, all of that changed.  The winds turned around and began blowing from the north, and they were really hard winds.  The kind of winds that, if you were sitting in your home, you could hear the shingles flapping around just a few feet above your head.  If the wind wasn’t enough, then, on Saturday morning, it was 30 degrees until around noon.  There was a bit of precipitation that turned to ice for a little while.  Sunday it was a bit warmer.  It made it up to around 60 degrees.  That was our heat wave for the weekend.  Today, the sun has been shining and it is very pleasant again.  I got on Facebook after I had received a message from a friend and the season we are in is being referred to is now Sprinter.  We don’t know if it is spring or winter, so, this catches whatever the condition is at the time.  We are still going to receive some pretty cool temperatures this coming weekend.  Our mesquite trees are even bearing leaves now, so, they think it is Spring.

Our high school kids had their junior-senior prom this past weekend.  It was certainly cold that evening.

We have a few folks in our community that needed to be lifted up in our prayers.  Joe Turner is still in Duncan Regional and is having some more surgery.  Please keep him and Fern in your prayers.  David Wingfield had surgery last week and prayers for him and his family that he will be restored to good health soon. Please remember Carlie Southard in our prayers.  Pat Bussey made it back home last week and she is going to Tulsa to the Cancer Center to get their opinion on what approach she needs to take in regards to the cancer she has.  Prayers for her and her family during this time.

Terri and Chuck Sheffield will be making a trip to London, England this week.  Terri has been very successful in her insurance business and Farm Bureau is paying for their trip.  Prayers for them that they have safe travels there and back.  They will spend 9 hours on the plane before they get to their destination.

Kim’s news for this week:

Before I got to the big flashing sign by the bridge, I look over my shoulder cause it sounded like I was getting pulled over.

In Shelton’s parking lot I ran over my foot with a shopping cart..

Sunday afternoon, it was all I was hoping, me and Ruffy Tuffy turning back at the Cowboy Church roping.

Everyone have a blessed week.  Prayers for rain and for each other.
