Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby released the following statement on the passing of Senator John McCain.

0

“Senator John McCain epitomized courage, conviction and commitment in his service to the people of the United States and citizens of Tribal nations across the country. His passion and unflinching honesty were hallmarks of his decades of service. His long tenure on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee and his support for tribal sovereignty, self-governance and self-determination will have a positive impact on federal Indian policy for generations to come. This is a time of great sadness for our entire nation, but we would be remiss not to express our condolences to the family and close friends of Senator John McCain who will miss him most.”

Jefferson County Health Department and Chickasaw Nation Offering Flu Shots to the Public

0

The Jefferson County Health Department is conducting a FREE drive-thru flu clinic October 18, 2019 for people 9 years and at the Jefferson County Health Department, 107 E Anderson in Waurika, from 9 am to 4 pm.

Flu shots will be offered at no cost for those who participate, thanks to the donation of vaccine by the Chickasaw Nation.  Please do not bring pets through the drive-thru, or restrain them to the back seat area.  Wearing a short sleeve shirt, or clothing that leaves the upper arm accessible is helpful as well.

“Flu season is here and flu shots are the best way to protect yourself and those around you” said Regional Administrative Director Mendy Spohn. “We don’t care where you get it, we just want to encourage everyone to get a flu shot.”

Each year in the United States, flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. The flu vaccine is the best defense against getting the flu. Flu season usually starts in September or October and runs through April or May.

Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk for serious illness from the flu including pregnant women, children younger than 5 years of age and people with asthma, diabetes, chronic heart and lung disease and other chronic conditions. Parents and family members of babies younger than 6 months of age and people who live with or care for anyone at high risk for complications from the flu, including health care workers, should also get the vaccine.

For more information about the flu or flu clinics, contact the Jefferson County Health Department at (580) 228-2313.

Unfortunately, due to safety concerns this year, the Waurika Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has been canceled.  The Summer Reading Program is something we look forward to every year and we hope to see everyone again next year when our theme will be “Tails and Tales”.

‘Project Kid’ by Amanda Kingloff is available as an an ebook from the Waurika Public Library’s virtual library on Overdrive.

Perfect for crafty parents who are eager to get their kids excited about DIY, ProjectKid is everything you could want in a craft book: 100(!) stylish, inventive projects; step-by-step photographs; tips for the novice crafter; easy-to-follow instructions; and a fresh, modern look. What really sets these projects apart are the unexpected, ingenious ways Kingloff uses everyday objects and materials. (Did you ever think a body-wash bottle would make a perfect rocket ship?) And these are projects for things kids want to make—and keep—from a juice-box owl to a pirate ship to a curio cabinet for displaying all of their treasures, plus games, jewelry, and more. Also included in the book are basic crafting lessons (such as pom-pom making and weaving) to help children of all ages build a DIY arsenal, a handy guide to must-have tools and materials, and a source directory.

You can check out Ebooks and audiobooks online through the Overdrive app available from your phone or tablet’s appstore.  Your local library has thousands of ebooks and audiobooks you can check out online. You can borrow them, instantly, for free, using just the device in your hand.  You’ll need your library patron card number and the free Overdrive app from the app store on your tablet or phone.  Once you open the Overdrive app, find the Waurika Public Library and use your card number to sign in and then search, sample, borrow, enjoy.  If you need your card number, call us at 580-228-3274 and we’ll provide it to you.

It takes just a few taps to find and borrow a book. Overdrive has a built-in ebook reader, and an audiobook player. You can also use your Kindle app or send books to a Kindle device for reading.

ADA, Okla. – Save the date for the 8th annual Chickasaw Nation Day of Prayer. For the first time, the event will take place virtually Monday, Aug. 24 at 9:30 a.m.

Each year during the Day of Prayer, thanks is given for the Chickasaw Nation’s many blessings and a prayer is said for the health and safety of Chickasaw citizens and communities. This year’s special virtual Chickasaw Nation Day of Prayer will be broadcast on Chickasaw.net and Facebook.com/TheChickasawNation.

On Saturday, June 2nd, the FRIENDS of the Waurika Public Library are having a used book sale.  For $3 we’ll have bags that you can fill with books!  DVDs will also be for sale for $1 each.  Proceeds will go to help programs and activities at the library.

Summer is right around the corner!  The Waurika Public Library invites elementary-aged children, those who will be entering 1st grade through 5th grade in September, to attend this year’s Summer Reading Program. A variety of weekday programming will be offered and lunch will be provided daily for any school-aged child.

The theme this year is Libraries Rock!  Programming will run each weekday, June 4-July 27 with the exception of the July 4 holiday.  Reading and activities will be from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m.  Children attending the Summer Reading Program must be picked up by their parent/guardian at noon each day.

Children must be registered to attend. For more information or registration forms, visit the Waurika Public Library or call 580.228.3274.

The Summer Reading Program is free to attend.  The public library, community organizations and individuals care about your children. Together we raised funds to offer daily educational programs and week-day lunches to keep your children’s minds and bodies fed this summer. Whether keeping track of the amount of time your children spend reading or the number of books they’ve read this summer, children who attend the Summer Reading Program keep their minds active and enter the new school year ready to succeed.
